Analysis of the related factors of mental health in female nursing students

Abstract:AIM:To analyze the influential factors of mental health in nursing students. METHODS:Totally 515 students studying nursing were enrolled as observational objects from higher learning colleges of Xi'an city with cluster sampling method from December 1st to 15th 2005. The students with at least 187 points of Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) were as high score group and at most 116 points as low score group. The low score group matched the high score group in sex (female) and ages (no more than 3 years old). SCL-90,Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ),Self-Esteem Scale (SES) and the questionnaire of nursing students' factors were adopted. Single factor variation analysis and Logistic regression analysis were adopted in investigational variance. RESULTS:Totally 515 questionnaires were sent out,and two students had not filled in the questionnaires because of illness with the response rate of 99.6%. There were 507 effective questionnaires with the effective rate of 98.8%. There were 100 students in the high score group and low score group,respectively. ①Single factor analysis result of mental health related personal factor (measurement variance) in students studying nursing:Scores of positive coping-style and self-esteem of high score group were much lower than that of low score group (20.47±5.02,22.15±6.02;25.91 ±3.60,30.96±3.25),and the difference was significant (P < 0.05,P < 0.01). However,the score of negative coping-style of high score group was much higher than that of low score group (12.57±4.08,8.00±4.12),and the difference was significant (P < 0.01). ②Mental health related personal factor (two classified variances) in students studying nursing in single factor analysis indicated that there was significant difference between high score group and low score group in only child,away from home,loneliness,heavy studying pressure,worrying without academic degree,self-actualization satisfaction,misunderstand by others,being discriminated,losing one's love,bosom friend,no place to pour out one's heart,disorder of sleep,health problem in recent one year,adapting to new environment,participating in sports activities,worrying job assignment on graduation and the most available worried thing. ③Multiple variation Logistic Regression Analysis suggested that independent risk factors of nursing students were heavy study pressures (OR=10.017) and health problems in recent one year(OR=4.384),while self-actualization satisfaction (OR=0.037) and higher self-esteem (OR=0.357) were preventive factors. CONCLUSION:The mental health status of nursing students is related to their education,growing and social circumstances,etc. Psychological problems intervention should be conducted pointedly with the respect to the influencing aspects of students' personal factor.
