Abstract:Detailed analysis shows that the famous Iyengar inequality actually says that the Trapezoidal formula is a central algorithm for approximating integrals over an appropriate interval for the class of functions whose derivatives are bounded by a positive number K in L ∞ -sense. The inherent nonlinearity from central algorithms reflects the importance of the Iyengar inequality and thus makes familiar linear methods malfunction when one tries to generalize it. It is shown that the generalization depends on a nonlinear system of equations satisfied by a set of free nodes of a perfect spline. Explicit constructions are obtained in the spirit of the Iyengar inequality for the class of functions whose r th ( r ≤4) derivatives are bounded by a positive number K in L ∞ -sense because a closed solution to the nonlinear system is only available for r ≤4. Connections with computational mathematics, especially with best interpolation and best quadrature, are discussed. Numerical experiments are also included.

Abstract:For a given matrix with dominant diagonal, a number of convenient upper and lower bounds for the corresponding determinant are available in the literature. These inequalities are used here to derive bounds for a general system of orthogonal polynomials for a specified range of values of the argument. The results thus obtained are applied to the classical Jacobi and related polynomials.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish new generalizations of the Hermite-Hadamard-type inequalities. These inequalities are formulated in terms of modules of certain powers of proper functions. Generalizations for convex functions are also considered. As applications, some new inequalities for the digamma function in terms of the trigamma function and some inequalities involving special means of real numbers are given. The results also include estimates via arithmetic, geometric and logarithmic means. The examples are derived in order to demonstrate that some of our results in this paper are more exact than the existing ones and some improve several known results available in the literature. The constants in the derived inequalities are calculated; some of these constants are sharp. As a visual example, graphs of some technically important functions are included in the text.

Abstract:In this paper the authors prove a generalization of certain generating functions for Jacobi and related polynomials, given recently by H. M. Srivastava. The method used is due to Pólya and Szegö, and it is based on Rodrigues' formula for the Jacobi polynomials and Lagrange's expansion theorem. A number of special and limiting cases of the main result will give rise to a class of generating functions for ultraspherical, Laguerre and Bessel polynomials.

Abstract:Various miscellaneous functional inequalities are deduced for the so-called generalized inverse trigonometric and hyperbolic functions. For instance, functional inequalities for sums, difference and quotient of generalized inverse trigonometric and hyperbolic functions are given, as well as some Grünbaum inequalities with the aid of the classical Bernoulli inequality. Moreover, by means of certain already derived bounds, bilateral bounding inequalities are obtained for the generalized hypergeometric ${}_3F_2$ Clausen function.

Abstract:By employing an interesting modification of the familiar multiplying-factor technique, which was developed elsewhere by B. Noble [Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 59, 363–371 (1963)], an exact solution is obtained for a certain pair of dual equations involving series of Jacobi polynomials. Also computed are the values of these general series on the intervals over which their values are not already specified. Several special or confluent cases of the dual series equations considered here are shown to lead to (known or now) dual equations involving series of Jacobi or Laguerre polynomials; these simpler pairs of dual series equations were solved in the earlier works by A. P. Dwivedi and T. N. Trivedi [Indag. Math. 36, 203–210 (1974)], J. S. Lowndes [Proc. Edinburgh Math. Soc. Ser. II 16, 273–280 (1969)], Rekha Panda [Indag. Math. 39, 122–127 (1977)], and H. M. Abstract:In this paper we study a class of quasi--variational--hemi\-va\-ria\-tio\-nal inequalities in reflexive Banach spaces. The inequalities contain a convex potential, a locally Lipschitz superpotential, and a solution-dependent set of constraints. Solution existence and compactness of the solution set to the inequality problem are established based on the Kakutani--Ky Fan--Glicksberg fixed point theorem. Two examples of the interior and boundary semipermeability models illustrate the applicability of our results.

Simple bounds for the extreme zeroes of Jacobi polynomials

Abstract:Some new bounds for the extreme zeroes of Jacobi polynomials are obtained with an elementary approach. A feature of these bounds is their simple forms, which make them easy to work with. Despite their simplicity, our lower bounds for the largest zeroes of Gegenbauer polynomials are compatible with some of the best hitherto known results.

Among other results presented here, the authors establish a number of inclusion relationships associated with some of these integral operators. In these papers authors refine the inequalities of trigonometric and hyperbolic functions such as Adamovic-Mitrinovic inequality, Cusa-Huygens inequality, Lazarevic inequality, Huygens inequality, Jordan's inequality, Carlson's inequality, Wilker's inequality, Redheffer's inequality, Wilker-Anglesio inequality, Becker-Stark inequality, Kober's inequality, Shafer's inequality and Shafer-Fink's inequality. The relation between trigonometric and hyperbolic functions has been built too. In the last paper, the sharp upper and lower bounds for the classical beta function has been established by studying the Jordan's inequality.

Abstract:In the present work we establish for the first time a class of -superquadratic functions and look into its features. Using them, we come up with the Jensen and Hermite–Hadamard inequalities, as well as the fractional versions of Hermite–Hadamard inequalities with respect to Riemann–Liouville fractional integral operators. The findings are confirmed by certain numerical calculations and graphical depictions that take a few appropriate examples into account. The study is enhanced by the addition of applications of special means, moments of random variables, and modified Bessel functions of the first kind. This is achieved by considering new functions pertaining to the uniform probability density function and taking the modified Bessel functions of the first kind into consideration. The new results clearly provide extensions and improvements of the work given in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper we review and derive hyperbolic and trigonometric double summation addition theorems for Jacobi functions of the first and second kind. In connection with these addition theorems, we perform a full analysis of the relation between symmetric, antisymmetric and odd-half-integer parameter values for the Jacobi functions with certain Gauss hypergeometric functions which satisfy a quadratic transformation, including associated Legendre, Gegenbauer and Ferrers functions of the first and second kind. We also introduce Olver normalizations of the Jacobi functions which are particularly useful in the derivation of expansion formulas when the parameters are integers. We introduce an application of the addition theorems for the Jacobi functions of the second kind to separated eigenfunction expansions of a fundamental solution of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the compact and noncompact rank one symmetric spaces.

On positive Jacobi matrices with compact inverses

Abstract:We consider positive Jacobi matrices $J$ with compact inverses and consequently with purely discrete spectra. A number of properties of the corresponding sequence of orthogonal polynomials is studied including the convergence of their zeros, the vague convergence of the zero counting measures and of the Christoffel--Darboux kernels on the diagonal. Particularly, if the inverse of $J$ belongs to some Schatten class, we identify the asymptotic behaviour of the sequence of orthogonal polynomials and express it in terms of its regularized characteristic function. In the even more special case when the inverse of $J$ belongs to the trace class we derive various formulas for the orthogonality measure, eigenvectors of $J$ as well as for the functions of the second kind and related objects. These general results are given a more explicit form in the case when $-J$ is a generator of a Birth--Death process. Among others we provide a formula for the trace of the inverse of $J$. We illustrate our results by introducing and studying a modification of $q$-Laguerre polynomials corresponding to a determinate moment problem.

Boundary value problems for second order linear difference equations: application to the computation of the inverse of generalized Jacobi matrices

Abstract:We have named <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">generalized Jacobi</em> matrices to those that are practically tridiagonal, except for the two final entries and the two first entries of its first and its last row respectively. This class of matrices encompasses both standard Jacobi and periodic Jacobi matrices that appear in many contexts in pure and applied mathematics. Therefore, the study of the inverse of these matrices becomes of specific interest. However, explicit formulas for inverses are known only in a few cases, in particular when the coefficients of the diagonal entries are subjected to some restrictions. We will show that the inverse of generalized Jacobi matrices can be raised in terms of the resolution of a boundary value problem associated with a second order linear difference equation. In fact, recent advances in the study of linear difference equations, allow us to compute the solution of this kind of boundary value problems. So, the conditions that ensure the uniqueness of the solution of the boundary value problem leads to the invertibility conditions for the matrix, whereas that solutions for suitable problems provide explicitly the entries of the inverse matrix.

Abstract:In this note we deduce well known modular identities for Jacobi theta functions using the spectral representations associated with the real valued Brownian motion taking values on $[-1,+1]$. We consider two cases: (i) reflection at $-1$ and $+1$, (ii) killing at $-1$ and $+1$. It is seen that these two representations give, in a sense, most compact forms of the modular theta-function identities. We study also discrete Gaussian distributions generated by theta functions, and derive, in particular, addition formulas for discrete Gaussian variables.

Abstract:The classical Voigt functions occur frequently in a wide variety of problems in astrophysical spectroscopy, emission, absorption and transfer of radiation in heated atmosphere, and plasma dispersion, and indeed also in the theory of neutron reactions. Here, in the present paper, by applying several known upper bounds for the first-kind Bessel function J ν (x) given recently by (for example) Landau, Olenko and Krasikov, sharp bounding inequalities are obtained for the unified multivariable Voigt function V μ,ν (x; y) in terms of the confluent Fox-Wright function 1ψ0 and its incomplete variant 1ψ0. Connections of the unified multivariable Voigt function V μ,ν (x; y) with other unifications and generalizations of the classical Voigt function are also briefly pointed out.

Abstract:The Hermite-Hadamard inequalities for κ-Riemann-Liouville fractional integrals (R-LFI) are presented in this study using a relatively novel approach based on Abel-Gontscharoff Green’s function. In this new technique, we first established some integral identities. Such identities are used to obtain new results for monotonic functions whose second derivative is convex (concave) in absolute value. Some previously published inequalities are obtained as special cases of our main results. Various applications of our main consequences are also explored to special means and trapezoid-type formulae.
