Abstract:Vessel emissions have contributed a great deal to air quality deterioration in China. Hence,the Chinese government has promulgated a series of stringent emission regulations. It is in this context that vessel emission control technology research is in full swing. In particular,during the 13th Five-Year Plan, the air pollution control technology of vessels has greatly improved. Vessel emission control has followed two main governance routes: source emission reduction and aftertreatment technology. Source control focuses on alternative fuels, with two main directions, the development of new fuels and the modification of existing fuels.Moreover, after-treatment technologies have also been developed, including wet desulfurization technology using seawater or alkaline liquids as wet washing liquids and selective catalytic reduction(SCR) for the control of NOx emission. Due to China’s increasingly stringent emissions standards and regulations, work on the development of clean alternative fuels and further upgrading the collaborative application of after-treatment technologies to meet the near-zero-emissions requirements of vessels is still necessary.

Abstract:The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has formulated the MARPOL Convention, which imposes strict restrictions on the $\mathbf{NO}_{\mathbf{x}}$ emissions from ships, that is, the Tier III standard. China also stipulates that for Chinese domestic ships built on or after January 1, 2022, marine diesel engines with a single-cylinder displacement greater than or equal to 30 liters should meet the requirements of the Tier III standard. With the increasingly strict environmental protection requirements, the SCR system will definitely become the “standard” of the new generation of diesel engines in the future. At present, domestic marine diesel engines use a relatively wide range of fixed molar ratio control methods, and the injection and mixing of ammonia is not uniform enough, which leads to excessive nitrogen oxides at the exhaust gas outlet of the engine and a low automatic denitration input rate. Several SCR control methods widely used in the market through the research on the automatic control system of nitrogen oxides emission reduction for marine diesel engines were analyzed and compared, and several optimization methods for the automatic control system for nitrogen oxides emission reduction for marine diesel engines were proposed, and actual ship verification was carried out in this paper. The method provides a theoretical basis for the green development of smart marine diesel engine.

Abstract:In September 1997, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted an international convention protocol to reduce air pollution from ships, in order to achieve sustainable maritime development. This protocol has been approved by 15 member countries and will be enforced in May 2005. Pollutants emitted from ships, such as nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, sulfur oxides, etc. will be regulated by this convention through ship inspections and issuance of certificates. Ships belonging to maritime countries such as Taiwan, which sail around the world and berth in commercial ports, must obey this convention. This study has investigated possible strategies, which may be adopted by maritime countries to conform to this IMO convention in order to reduce the air pollution from ships. A sea-going ship must prepare EIAPP and IAPP certificates for inspection by port-state-control officials, when the ship is anchored at a maritime port. These port-state-control officials may also require the continuous detection and sampling of a ship's emissions, while it is berthed at the port. Legislative support is necessary for successful implementation of these safeguards. It is suggested, therefore, that the administration of both navigational and environmental protection, in maritime countries, cooperate in the revision of relevant federal laws, to implement the provisions of the MARPOL 73/78/97 convention; in this way, the air pollution from ships can be effectively controlled. Installation of advanced detection equipment can effectively detect any ships’ violations of air pollution regulations. The Harbor Affairs’ Bureau should also establish a database of air pollution inspections for ships berthed within their harbor, requiring that ships’ equipment comply with the requirements of the MARPOL convention, for the reduction of air pollution.

Abstract:With the development of green shipping, the demand for control and treatment of ship exhaust emissions is gradually upgraded. The implementation of Tier III of MAPOLE Convention has put forward higher requirements for NOx emission reduction. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is one of the most widely used technologies for denitrification of Marine exhaust gas, which has important research significance. In this paper, the influence of the distance between urea nozzle and catalytic converter on the mixing uniformity of exhaust gas and urea water was studied. A catalytic reactor model was established to simulate the uniformity of urea solution at the end of catalytic converter with different distance of urea nozzle. A test bench of SCR system was built (the diesel engine used was 4135Ca type) to verify the simulation results. And combined with the actual engineering application, the optimal distance between urea and catalytic converter was determined as 5D(D is the diameter of the air inlet pipe).

Abstract:In this paper, MAN 6S35ME-B9 two-stroke diesel engine is taken as the research object. By constructing a detailed combustion reaction mechanism including CH 4, C 4H 10O, nitrides and other substances, CHEMKIN-PRO is used to simulate the same fuel mixing ratio and excess air coefficient. Under the condition of 1.5, the temperature, NO mole fraction and NH 3 mole fraction in the reactor change and study the factors affecting the pollutant emission of marine diesel engine with the crank angle under different working conditions. The simulation shows that with the decrease of diesel engine speed, the maximum temperature of combustion reaction and the temperature at exhaust opening are obviously reduced. At the same time, mole fraction of NO and NH 3 decreases with the decrease of rotational speed, and there is no nitride production in the combustion reaction at 25%.

Abstract:In recent years, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Europe, and the United States and other countries have set up different emission control areas (ECA) for ship exhaust pollutants to enforce more stringent pollutant emission regulations. In order to meet the current IMO Tier III emission regulations, an after-treatment device must be installed in the exhaust system of the ship power plant to reduce the ship NOx emissions. At present, selective catalytic reduction technology (SCR) is one of the main technical routes to resolve excess NOx emissions of marine diesel engines, and is the only NOx emission reduction technology recognized by the IMO that can be used for various ship engines. Compared with the conventional low-pressure SCR system, the high-pressure SCR system can be applied to low-speed marine diesel engines that burn inferior fuels, but its working conditions are relatively harsh, and it can be susceptible to operational problems such as sulfuric acid corrosion, salt blockage, and switching delay during the actual ship tests and ship applications. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the design method and matching strategy of the high-pressure SCR system to achieve a more efficient and reliable operation. This article summarizes the technical characteristics and application problems of marine diesel engine SCR systems in detail, tracks the development trend of the catalytic reaction mechanism, engine tuning, and control strategy under high sulfur exhaust gas conditions. Results showed that low temperature is an important reason for the formation of ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, and other deposits. Additionally, the formed deposits will directly affect the working performance of the SCR systems. The development of SCR technology for marine low-speed engines should be the compromise solution under the requirements of high sulfur fuel, high thermal efficiency, and low pollution emissions. Under the dual restrictions of high sulfur fuel and low exhaust temperature, the low-speed diesel engine SCR systems will inevitably sacrifice part of the engine economy to obtain higher denitrification efficiency and operational reliability.

Abstract:The international shipping industry is facing increasingly stringent limitations on nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. New solutions for reducing NOx emitted by marine engines need to be investigated to find the best technology. Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is an advanced active emissions control technology successfully used in automotive diesel engines; it could be applied to marine engines with ad-hoc solutions to integrate it in the exhaust of large engines. In this study, a commercial SCR was tested at the exhaust of a diesel engine in inlet gas conditions typical of a marine engine. The SCR system consisted of a custom monolith (provided by Hug-Engineering AG) that enabled seamless integration for a broad range of engine sizes; the active phases were V2O5 (3 wt%)-WO3 (7 wt%)-TiO2 (75 wt%). The monolith was studied at the laboratory scale for its in-depth chemical/physical characterization and by means of an intermediate-scale engine, reproducing the exhaust gas conditions of a full-scale marine engine. The system's effectiveness in terms of NOx removal for the selected engine operating conditions was evaluated in a wide range of temperature and NOx emissions values and for different quantities of the reduction agent (AdBlue or ammonia) added to exhaust gases. The investigated technological solution resulted in efficient NOx emission control from a marine engine.

Abstract:Ship emissions problems caused by the rapid development of maritime trade can't be ignored. The NOX, SOX, CO2, PM and other toxic substances contained in the exhaust gas are extremely harmful to the environment and human health. In order to cope with the adverse effects of ship emissions and the increasingly stringent emission regulations formulated by the IMO and governments, the shipping industry needs to adopt new clean energy and high-efficiency exhaust control technologies to reduce ship emissions. This paper provides a comprehensive review, including: (1) The impact of pollutants such as NOX, SOX, CO2 and PM emitted by ships on the environment and human health; (2) New regulations about ship exhaust emissions; (3) Application of clean energy such as LNG, biodiesel, methanol, hydrogen and ammonia on ships; (4) After-treatment technology of ship exhaust gas such as SCR and EGR. And focusing on the principles, uses, characteristics, implementation obstacles and prospects of different energy and technologies, with a view to provide some help for the research on ship exhaust emissions control.
Analysis of Marine Diesel Engine Emission Characteristics of Different Power Ranges in China

Abstract:In order to accurately assess China’s port air pollution caused by the shipping industry, two main methods can be used to calculate the emissions of ships, including the method based on ship fuel consumption and the method based on ship activities. Both methods require accurate diesel engine emission factors, or specific emissions. In this paper, the emission characteristics of NOX, CO, CO2 and THC from 197 domestic marine diesel engines were tested under bench test conditions by a standard emission measurement system. The diesel engines were divided into six Classes, A~F, according to their power distribution, and the fuel-based emission factors and energy-based emission factors of marine main engine and auxiliary engine meeting IMO NOX Tier II standards were given. The results showed that the main engine fuel-based emission factors of NOX, CO, CO2 and THC from Class A to Class F were 33.25~76.58, 2.70~4.33, 3123.92~3166.47 and 1.10~2.64 kg/t-fuel, respectively; and the energy-based emission factors were 6.57~11.75, 0.56~0.81, 530.28~659.71 and 0.18~0.61 g/kW h, respectively. The auxiliary engine fuel-based emission factors of NOX, CO, CO2 and THC from Class A to Class D were 27.17~39.81, 2.66~5.12, 3113.01~3141.34 and 1.16~2.87 kg/t-fuel respectively; and their energy-based emission factors were 6.06~8.33, 0.47~0.77, 656.86~684.91 and 0.21~0.61 g/kW h, respectively. The emission factors for different types of diesel engines were closely related to the diesel engine load, and the relation between them could be expressed by quadratic polynomial or power function. The results of this paper provide valuable data for the estimation of waterway transportation exhaust emissions and comprehensive understanding of the emission characteristics of marine diesel engines.

Abstract:Aiming to investigate the application feasibility of ammonia in the low-speed two-stroke marine engine theoretically, an ammonia engine model was constructed to evaluate the performance and emissions characteristics of ammonia engine. The model is based on a premixed dual-fuel engine ignited by the pilot fuel (diesel) injected into the prechamber. A skeletal mechanism with reasonable accuracy containing 104 species and 573 reactions was innovatively developed to simulate the combustion process. Meanwhile, the viability and comparison of various ammonia supply methods including liquid and gaseous forms were explored in terms of engine power, escaped and unburned ammonia, NO x and carbon emissions. The result revealed that the ammonia engine, whether supplied in liquid or gaseous form, can achieve typical ship engine load range and thermal efficiency. Whereas, the supply method of liquid ammonia is superior to gaseous ammonia in terms of power, unburned and escaped ammonia, and thermal efficiency.Furthermore, the NO x and CO2 emissions level of ammonia engine was assessed. The NO x emissions of this operation mode can fulfill the Tier Ⅱ emission limit.

Abstract:International Journal of Engine Research, Ahead of Print. To meet the requirement of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the application of carbon-free fuel ammonia in marine engines has gained importance. However, the use of ammonia as fuel leads to low thermal efficiency and high emissions of pollutants in engines. Increasing the rate of combustion of the fuel mixture in the engine helps to solve this problem. Therefore, the influence of hydrogen volume fraction (XH2) and oxygen volume fraction (XO2) in the main chamber, via numerical simulations, on the combustion and emission characteristics of a marine ammonia engine featuring a pre-chamber. Further analysis was conducted via adjustments in the start of ignition (SOI) to optimize both engine performance and emissions. The results showed that the increase of both XH2 and XO2 contributed to the improvement of indicated thermal efficiency (ITE) and the reduction of N2O emissions. However, this is usually accompanied by higher NOx emissions, especially in the case of high XO2. In addition, adjusting the SOI resulted in the engine ITE is greater than 47.6% in each case and reduces GHG emissions by about 80% (<40 ppm N2O). Finally, chemical kinetic analysis showed that oxygen-enriched or hydrogen-enriched conditions did not change the main reaction pathway.

Abstract:In order to accurately assess China's port air pollution caused by AHTS (Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessels) ships, 46 diesel engines on 27 AHTS ships were tested for onboard emissions using a large gas analyzer to statistically analyze their fuel-based and power-based emission factors. The results show that fuel-based NOx-emission factors for MEs, SEs and AEs before and after the use of the SCR system are 45.4, 38.24,33.04 g/kg and 6.35, 4.98, 5.82 g/kg, CO-emission factors are 7.95, 6.30, 7.96 g/kg and 6.90, 6.93, 8.32 g/kg, THC-emission factors are 0.49, 0.64, 0.25 g/kg and 0.42, 0.47, 0.22 g/kg, and CO 2 -emission factors are 3121.62, 3121.34, 3093.12 g/kg and 3088.14,3091.40, 3085.21 g/kg, respectively. Power-based NOx-emission factors for MEs, SEs and AEs before and after the use of the SCR system are 9.71, 8.61, 7.58 g/(kW·h) and 1.37, 1.23, 1.33 g/(kW·h), CO-emission factors are 1.71, 2.08, 1.84 g/(kW·h) and 1.47, 1.53, 1.93 g/(kW·h), THC-emission factors are 0.10, 0.14, 0.05 g/(kW·h) and 0.09, 0.13, 0.06 g/(kW·h), and CO 2 -emission factors are 671.73, 700.58, 718.46 g/(kW·h) and 664.42, 694.16, 716.92 g/(kW·h), respectively. The power-based emission factor is closely related to the diesel engine load, and the relationship between different exhaust emissions and diesel engine load shows different patterns. In addition, it was found that the NOx emissions of the ship decreased significantly to meet the IMO Tier III requirements after running SCR. The emission factors of CO, HC and CO 2 have no obvious change whether SCR systems were operated or not. The AHTS marine engine emission factors obtained in this paper are highly relevant and can provide reliable data for establishing a suitable emission inventory for medium and high speed engineering support vessels.

Abstract:Marine diesel engines produce exhaust gas including a lot of SO2 and NOx. This paper proposes a process that is capable of removing NOx and SO2 simultaneously; this process utilizes ozone oxidation and an alkaline countercurrent packed scrubber. Ozone decomposition, oxidation properties of NOx, and removal efficiency of NOx and SO2 were investigated, and the optimal factors were established. The reaction mechanism and products for simultaneous desulfurization and denitration were deduced. Results show that the ozone decomposition rate depends on exhaust gas temperature and initial concentration of ozone. Oxidation efficiency of NOx decreases as temperature rose and initial concentration of ozone reduced. The presence of SO2 has little influence on NO conversion process. CO(NH2)2 is the best reducing additive to reduce the consumption of ozone. Abstract:Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology is currently the most effective deNOx technology and has broad application prospects. Moreover, there is a large NOx content in marine engine exhaust. However, the marine engine SCR catalyst will be affected by heavy metals, SO2, H2O(g), hydrocarbons (HC) and particulate matter (PM) in the exhaust, which will hinder the removal of NOx via SCR. Furthermore, due to the high loading operation of the marine engine and the regeneration of the diesel particulate filter (DPF), the exhaust temperature of the engine may exceed 600 °C, which leads to sintering of the SCR catalysts. Therefore, the development of new catalysts with good tolerances to the above emissions and process parameters is of great significance for further reducing NOx from marine engines. In this work, we first elaborate on the mechanism of the SCR catalyst poisoning caused by marine engine emissions, as well as the working mechanism of SCR catalysts affected by the engine exhaust temperature. Second, we also summarize the current technologies for improving the properties of SCR catalysts with the aim of enhancing the resistance and stability under complex working conditions. Finally, the challenges and perspectives associated with the performance optimization and technology popularization of marine SCR systems are discussed and proposed further. Consequently, this review may provide a valuable reference and inspiration for the development of catalysts and improvement in the denitration ability of SCR systems matched with marine engines.

Abstract:Taking into account the formation of thermal NO, the local balance method and Extended Zeldovich model were used in the paper to simulate the combustion and emission of a marine diesel engine with the AVL FIRE software and to verify the model. The effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) ratios of 0%, 10%and 20% on combustion and emission of a diesel engine were discussed. The purpose of the paper provided a theoretical basis for the marine diesel engine upgrade of Chinese small and medium sized vessels, especially fishing vessel engine. The results show that with the increasing of EGR ratio,the cylinder pressure and combustion temperatures decreases and the peak of soot also shown a downward trend and more gentle, under the same load conditions.

Abstract:Seven inlands ships were tested by using portable emission measurement system (PEMS) to analyze the real-world emission of NO and NO2.Operating modes include port-departure,port-arrival,and cruise.Results show that variations of NO and NO2 occurred on port-arrival and port-departure modes.On cruise mode,concentration of NO was higher and stable.The average time-based emission factor of NO on cruise mode is 3.22 times and 1.74 times higher than it on port-arrival and port-departure modes,respectively.The average time-based emission factor of NO2 on port-departure mode is 1.18 times and 1.96 times higher than it on cruises and port-arrival modes,respectively.Due to the shorter distance,the average distance-based emission factors of NO and NO2 on port-arrival are higher than those on cruise and port-departure modes.The NO emission factor is higher when the engine speed is higher,while NO2 emission factor on middle engine speed is higher than it on low engine speed and high engine speed.
