Clinical analysis of 10 cases of head and neck hamartoma

Abstract:Objective To describe the clinical and pathological features of head and neck hamartoma for reducing the clinical misdiagnosis rate.Methods from September 2000 to March 2014,10 patients harboring head and neck hamartoma were treated in our hospital.We retrospectively reviewed clinical presentation,imaging characteristics,pathological features,treatment strategies and prognosis with associated clinical records.Result Of the 10 cases,7 cases were male and 3 were female.The age ranged from 1 to 40 years.The location was geisoma,occiput,pharynx,ear and neck,respectly.And the number of cases was one,one,two,three and three,respectively.It was misdiagnosed as hemangioma,lipoma,teratoma,osteosarcoma.All patients underwent surgical removal of the lesions,and followed 2 to 16 years,except two patients relapsed,others had no recurrence.Conclusion The misdiagnosis rate of head and neck hamartoma is high,so it is very important to identify it from other benign tumors,and the final diagnosis rely on pathological examination.The best treatment is surgical removal.
