Abstract:The low-lying isomers of cationic water cluster (HO) have been globally explored by using particle swarm optimization algorithm in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. Compared with previous results, our searching method covers a wide range of structural isomers of (HO) and therefore turns out to be more effective. With these local minima, geometry optimization and vibrational analysis are performed for the most interesting clusters at second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2)/aug-cc-pVDZ level, and their energies are further refined at MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ and coupled-cluster theory with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The interaction energies using the complete basis set limits at MP2 level are also reported. The relationships between their structure arrangement and their energies are discussed. Based on the results of thermal simulation, structural change from a four-numbered ring to a tree-like structure occurs at T ≈ 45 K, and the relative population of six lowest-free-energy isomers is found to exceed 4% at some point within the studied temperature range. Studies reveal that, among these six isomers, two new-found isomers constitute 10% of isomer population at 180 K, and the experimental spectra can be better explained with inclusions of the two isomers. The molecular orbitals for six representative cationic water clusters are also studied. Through topological and reduced density gradient analysis, we investigated the structural characteristics and the bonding strengths of these water cluster radical cations.

Abstract:The structure of the solvation shell of aqueous Fe$^{+3}$ ion has been a subject of controversy due to discrepancies between experiments and different levels of theory. We address this issue by performing simulations for a wide range of ion concentrations, using various empirical potential energy functions, as well as density functional theory calculations of selected configurations. The solvation shell undergoes abrupt transitions between two states: an octahedral (OH) state with 6-fold coordination, and a capped trigonal prism (CTP) state with 7-fold coordination. The lifetime of these states is concentration dependent. In dilute $\mathrm{FeCl_3}$ solutions, the lifetime of the two states is similar ($\approx 1$ ns). However, the lifetime of the OH state increases with ion concentration, while that of the CTP state decreases slightly. When a uniform negative background charge is used instead of explicit counterions, the lifetime of the OH state is greatly overestimated. These findings underscore the need for further experimental measurements as well as high-level simulations over sufficiently long timescales and low concentration.

Abstract:The emergence of cation-anion species, or contact ion pairs, is fundamental to understanding the physical properties of aqueous solutions when moving from the ideal, low-concentration limit to the manifestly non-ideal limits of very high solute concentration or constituent ion activity. We focus here on Zn halide solutions both as a model system and also as an exemplar of the applications spanning from (i) electrical energy storage via the paradigm of water in salt electrolyte (WiSE) to (ii) the physical chemistry of brines in geochemistry to (iii) the long-standing problem of nucleation. Using a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches we quantify the halide coordination number and changing coordination geometry without embedded use of theoretical equilibrium constants. These results and the associated methods, notably including the use of valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopy, provide new insights into the Zn halide system and new research directions in the physical chemistry of concentrated electrolytes.

Abstract:2Ch-2N chalcogen bonds (ChBs) between a pair of homocations were characterized via crystal structure database analysis and quantum chemical computations. We first collected several crystal structures consisting of such interactions from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). Then, based on the CSD survey results, a series of model homodimers of organic chalcogenated cations were selected to theoretically study inter-cation 2Ch-2N ChBs for the first time. The dicationic complexes under investigation are unfavorable but metastable in gas phase. Immersion of these systems in solvents leads to a remarkable increase in dimer stability and produces stable ChB complexes. 2Ch-2N interactions in gas phase generally exhibit a positive electrostatic component, while the orbital and dispersion terms play a stabilizing role. When immersed in the solvent medium, the electrostatic interaction becomes more favorable, and the solvent energy contributes significantly to the stability of the complexes, resulting in attractive cation-cation ChBs.

Abstract:.How salts affect water structure is an important topic in many research fields. Salt-water clusters can be used as model systems to extract interaction information that is difficult to obtain directly from bulk solutions. In the present study, integrated tempering sampling(1,2) molecular dynamics (MD) are combined with quantum mechanics (QM) calculations to overcome the sampling problem in cluster structure searches. We used LiI(H2O)(n) and CsI(H2O) as representatives to investigate the microsolvation of ion pairs. It was found that Li+-I- and Cs+-I- ion pairs interact with water molecules in very different ways, and the corresponding salt-water clusters have distinctly different structures. LiI strongly affects water-water interactions, and the Lil(H2O) (n >= 5) clusters build around a Li+(H2O)(4) motif. CsI only slightly perturbs the water cluster structure, and CsI(H2O)(n) favors the clathrate-like structure when n = 18 or 20. Consistent with the law of "matching water affinities", Li+ and I- are more easily separated by solvent molecules than the Cs+-I- ion pair.

Abstract:We studied (NaSCN)2(H2O)n− clusters in the gas phase using size-selected anion photoelectron spectroscopy. The photoelectron spectra and vertical detachment energies of (NaSCN)2(H2O)n− (n = 0–5) were obtained in the experiment. The structures of (NaSCN)2(H2O)n−/0 up to n = 7 were investigated with density functional theory calculations. Two series of peaks are observed in the spectra, indicating that two types of structures coexist, the high electron binding energy peaks correspond to the chain style structures, and the low electron binding energy peaks correspond to the Na–N–Na–N rhombic structures or their derivatives. For the (NaSCN)2(H2O)n− clusters at n = 3–5, the Na–N–Na–N rhombic structures are the dominant structures, the rhombic four-membered rings start to open at n = 4, and the solvent separated ion pair (SSIP) type of structures start to appear at n = 6. For the neutral (NaSCN)2(H2O)n clusters, the Na–N–Na–N rhombic isomers become the dominant starting at n = 3, and the SSIP type of structures start to appear at n = 5 and become dominant at n = 6. The structural evolution of (NaSCN)2(H2O)n−/0 (n = 0–7) confirms the possible existence of ionic clusters such as Na(SCN)2− and Na2(SCN)+ in NaSCN aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with cluster models are performed at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level for investigating the solvent effects in Al(H2O)(6)(3+) water-exchange reactions. A "One-by-one" method is proposed to obtain the most representative number and arrangement of explicit H2Os in the second hydration sphere. First, all the possible ways to locate one explicit H2O in second sphere (N-m' = 1) based on the gas phase structure (N-m' = 0) are examined, and the optimal pathway (with the lowest energy barrier) for N-m' = 1 is determined. Next, more explicit H2Os are added one by one until the inner-sphere is fully hydrogen bonded. Finally, the optimal pathways with N-m' = 0-7 are obtained. The structural and energetic parameters as well as the lifetimes of the transition states are compared with the results obtained with the "Independent-minimum" method and the "Independent-average" method, and all three methods show that the pathway with N-m' = 6 may be representative. Our results give a new idea for finding the representative pathway for water-exchange reactions in other hydrated metal ion systems.
Solvation of the Hydroxide Anion: A Combined DFT and Molecular Dynamics Study

Abstract:The electronic structure of solvated hydroxide complexes ((OH)(-) H2O)(n), n = 1-3, is studied in detail using density functional theory (DFT), MP2, and Born-Oppenheimer-Molecular Dynamics (BOMD) approaches. Several nonlocal functionals of the GGA and LAP Families are employed, special attention is paid to the reliability of the LAP functionals in predicting structure, energetics, and proton transfer barriers. It is found that most of these give reasonable energetics of the quite strong hydrogen bonding in hydroxide anions (within a difference of about 2-15% from the experimental solvation enthalpies), provided that basis sets with both polarization and diffuse functions are employed and the basis sec superposition en or is taken care of. The performance of the various methods for the geometry of the hydroxide complexes is not so uniform, especially for the hydrogen bond distances and the shape of the complex with three water ligands. These differences are reflected also in the calculated vibrational spectra, particularly concerning the vibrations involving the hydrogen bonds. For O2H3- the potential energy surface associated with the central proton degrees of freedom is very flat, which leads to an intriguing proton dynamics. The BOMD simulation shows that the proton population profile is rather similar for BP and PP functionals, while the dynamical proton-transfer counting autocorrelation function, is, on the other hand, very sensitive to the choice of functional.
Revisiting the geometry of nd10 (n+1)s0 [M(H2O)]p+ complexes using four-component relativistic DFT calculations and scalar relativistic correlated CSOV energy decompositions (M(p+) = Cu+, Zn2+, Ag+, Cd2+, Au+, Hg2+)

Abstract:Hartree-Fock and DFT (B3LYP) nonrelativistic (scalar relativistic pseudopotentials for the metallic cation) and relativistic (molecular four-component approach coupled to an all-electron basis set) calculations are performed on a series of six nd10 (n+1)s0 [M(H2O)]p+ complexes to investigate their geometry, either planar C2v or nonplanar C(s). These complexes are, formally, entities originating from the complexation of a water molecule to a metallic cation: in the present study, no internal reorganization has been found, which ensures that the complexes can be regarded as a water molecule interacting with a metallic cation. For [Au(H2O)]+ and [Hg(H2O)]2+, it is observed that both electronic correlation and relativistic effects are required to recover the C(s) structures predicted by the four-component relativistic all-electron DFT calculations. However, including the zero-point energy corrections makes these shallow C(s) minima vanish and the systems become floppy. In all other systems, namely [Cu(H2O)]+, [Zn(H2O)]2+, [Ag(H2O)]+, and [Cd(H2O)]2+, all calculations predict a C2v geometry arising from especially flat potential energy surfaces related to the out-of-plane wagging vibration mode. In all cases, our computations point to the quasi-perfect transferability of the atomic pseudopotentials considered toward the molecular species investigated. A rationalization of the shape of the wagging potential energy surfaces (i.e., single well vs. double well) is proposed based on the Constrained Space Orbital Variation decompositions of the complexation energies. Any way of stabilizing the lowest unoccupied orbital of the metallic cation is expected to favor charge-transfer (from the highest occupied orbital(s) of the water ligand), covalence, and, consequently, C(s) structures. The CSOV complexation energy decompositions unambiguously reveal that such stabilizations are achieved by means of relativistic effects for [Au(H2O)]+, and, to a lesser extent, for [Hg(H2O)]2+. Such analyses allow to numerically quantify the rule of thumb known for Au+ which, once again, appears as a better archetype of a relativistic cation than Hg2+. This observation is reinforced due to the especially high contribution of the nonadditive correlation/relativity terms to the total complexation energy of [Au(H2O)]+.
The Stability of Hydrogen‐Bonded Ion‐Pair Complex Unexpectedly Increases with Increasing Solvent Polarity

Abstract:The generally observed decrease of the electrostatic energy in the complex with increasing solvent polarity has led to the assumption that the stability of the complexes with ion-pair hydrogen bonds decreases with increasing solvent polarity. Besides, the smaller solvent-accessible surface area (SASA) of the complex in comparison with the isolated subsystems results in a smaller solvation energy of the latter, leading to a destabilization of the complex in the solvent compared to the gas phase. In our study, which combines Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Infrared Spectroscopy experiments, quantum chemical calculations, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we question the general validity of this statement. We demonstrate that the binding free energy of the ion-pair hydrogen-bonded complex between 2-fluoropropionic acid and n-butylamine (CH3CHFCOO-... NH3But+) increases with increased solvent polarity. This phenomenon is rationalized by a substantial charge transfer between the subsystems that constitute the ion-pair hydrogen-bonded complex. This unexpected finding introduces a new perspective to our understanding of solvation dynamics, emphasizing the interplay between solvent polarity and molecular stability within hydrogen-bonded systems.

Asymmetrically Solvated Anion with Both Kinetic and Thermodynamic Stabilities: Theoretical Studies on the Cluster Anions (hf)n - (N=3-6).

Abstract:At the level of MP2 with the aug-cc-pVDZ and aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets supplemented with diffuse bond functions, the authors searched the potential energy surfaces of (HF)(n) (-) (n=3-6). In accordance with the literature, they found that the symmetrically solvated-electron anion (3(FH){e}) possesses the largest vertical detachment energy (VDE), while the dipole-bound anion ((FH)(3){e}) is the lowest isomer in energy for (HF)(3) (-). Their calculations demonstrated that, with the increase of the cluster size, the asymmetric (FH)(a){e}(HF)(b) cluster is stabilized with a simultaneously increased VDE. Thus they predicted that, for (HF)(6) (-), the (FH)(4){e}(HF)(2) cluster is both kinetically and thermodynamically most stable, possessing the largest VDE and being the global minimum at the same time.
Impact of hierarchical water dipole orderings on the dynamics of aqueous salt solutions

Abstract:Ions exhibit highly ion-specific complex behaviours when solvated in water, which remains a mystery despite the fundamental importance of ion solvation in nature, science, and technology. Here we explain these ion-specific properties by the ion-induced hierarchical dipolar, translational, and bond-orientational orderings of ion hydration shell under the competition between ion-water electrostatic interactions and inter-water hydrogen bonding. We first characterise this competition by a new length λ HB ( q ), explaining the ion-specific effects on solution dynamics. Then, by continuously tuning ion size and charge, we find that the bond-orientational order of the ion hydration shell highly develops for specific ion size and charge combinations. This ordering drastically stabilises the hydration shell; its degree changes the water residence time around ions by 11 orders of magnitude for main-group ions. These findings are fundamental to ionic processes in aqueous solutions, providing a physical principle for electrolyte design and application.

Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Doubly Charged Anions: Intramolecular Coulomb Repulsion and Solvent Stabilization

Abstract:Photoelectron spectroscopy has been combined with an electrospray ionization technique to study gas-phase multiply charged anions and their intramolecular Coulomb repulsion and solvation stabilization. We report an initial study on a series of linear dicarboxylate dianions (DC2-), -O2C(CH2)(n)CO2- (n = 3-6), solvated by one and two waters. The second electron binding energy of DC2- decreases with decreasing aliphatic chain length owing to the increasing Coulomb repulsion between the two charges; the dianion with n = 2 has a binding energy close to zero and is not stable in the gas phase. We found that this dianion can be stabilized by one water, and in general the first water stabilizes the electron binding energy of DC2- by similar to 0.3 eV. The second water, however, was observed to show a much stronger stabilization effect (similar to 0.6 eV), suggesting that the two waters solvate the two carboxylate groups separately.

Photodetachment of Hydrated Sulfate Doubly Charged Anions: SO42-(H2O)n (n = 4−40)†

Abstract:We produced hydrated clusters of the sulfate dianion, SO42-(H2O)(n) (n = 4-40), using electrospray ionization and investigated their energetics and stabilities using photodetachment photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) at four photon energies. The adiabatic electron detachment-energies of the hydrated cluster dianions were observed to with the number of,water, from similar to0.4 eV for n = 3, the smallest number of water to stabilize SO42- in the gas phase, to similar to5.7 eV for n = 40. The PES features of the smaller clusters are similar, all due to the SO42- dianion, which was found to be in the center of the solvated clusters. The intensity of the SO42- solute PES features was observed to decrease with solvent coverage beyond the first solvation shell (n approximate to 12), whereas a strong high binding energy feature due to ionization of the solvent emerged. For n > 30, the solute PES features almost completely disappeared, and the Water feature became dominant. The photon energy dependent studies allowed us to examine the repulsive Coulomb barrier (RCB), which was observed to decrease as the size of the solvated. clusters. increased. The RCB was also evaluated using a simple electrostatic model taking into account Of both Coulomb repulsion and polarization interactions between the departing electron and the remaining singly charged solvated cluster. The RCB for ionization of water was observed to be systematically smaller than that of the solute SO42-. The trapping of the solute photoelectrons by the solvent and the lowering of the RCB for the solvent ionization channel both contributed to the observed spectral evolution. from dominance of the solute at small n to the dominance of the solvent at large n. Extrapolation of the adiabatic detachment energies of SO42- and the ionization thresholds of water in the solvated SO42-(H2O)(n) clusters yielded bulk ionization potentials for aqueous SO42- and water to be 12.3 and 10.05 eV, respectively.
THE GEOMETRIES AND PROTON TRANSFER OF HYDRATED DIVALENT LEAD ION CLUSTERS [pb(h2o)n]2+(n = 1–17)

Abstract:The low-lying candidates of hydrated divalent lead ion clusters [ Pb(H2O) n]2+ with up to n = 17 have been extensively studied by using density functional theory (DFT) at B3LYP level. The optimized structures show that for n = 5–13 the lowest-energy structures prefer tetracoordinate with hemi-directed geometries, while the best candidates with n = 14–17 are hexacoordinate with holo-directed geometries, which is just consistent with the experimental observation. Furthermore, the origin of hemi-directed and holo-directed geometries has been revealed. It is found that in the hemi-directed geometries, the lone pair orbital has p character and fewer electrons are transferred from the water molecules to the Pb2+ ion. Contrarily, in the holo-directed geometries, the lone pair orbital has little or no p character and more electrons are transferred to the Pb2+ ion. On the other hand, the proton transfer reactions of the [ Pb(H2O) n]2+(n = 2, 4, 8) complexes have been examined, from which the predicted products of these complexes are in good agreement with the experimental observation.
Aqueous Stability of Zirconium Clusters, Including the Zr(IV) Hexanuclear Hydrolysis Complex [Zr6O4(OH)4(H2O)24]12+, from Density Functional Theory

Abstract:Framework materials constitute a broad family of solids that range from zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to coordination polymers. The synthesis of such network structures typically rely on precursor molecular building blocks. As an example, the UiO-66 MOF series is constructed of hexanuclear [Zr6O4(OH)4(CO2)12] cluster nodes and linear carboxylate linkers. Unfortunately, these Zr MOF cluster nodes cannot currently be manufactured in a sustainable way, motivating a search for "green" alternative synthesis methods. Stabilizing the hexanuclear Zr(IV) cluster (i.e., the hexamer, {Zr612+}) without the use of organic ligation would enable the use of environmentally friendly solvents such as water. The Zr(IV) tetranuclear cluster (i.e., the tetramer, {Zr48+}) can be stabilized in solution with or without organic ligands, yet the hexamer has yet to be synthesized without supporting ligands. The reasons why certain zirconium clusters are favored in aqueous solution over others are not well understood. This study reports the relative thermodynamic instability of the hypothetical hexamer {Zr612+} compared to the ubiquitous {Zr48+} tetramer. Density functional theory calculations were performed to obtain the hydrolysis Gibbs free energy of these species and used to construct Zr Pourbaix diagrams that illustrate the effects of electrochemical potential, pH, and Zr(IV) concentration. It was found that the aqueous {Zr612+} hexamer is ∼17.8 kcal/mol less stable than the aqueous {Zr48+} tetramer at pH = 0, V = 0, and [Zr(IV)] = 1 M, which is an energy difference on the order of counterion interactions. Electronic structure analyses were used to explore trends in the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap, frontier molecular orbitals, and electrostatic potential distribution of these clusters. The evidence suggests that the aqueous {Zr612+} hexamer may be promoted with more strategic syntheses incorporating minimal ligands and counterions.
Thermodynamic and Structural Trends in Hexavalent Actinyl Cations: Complexation of Dipicolinic Acid with Npo22+ and Puo22+ in Comparison with Uo22+

Abstract:The complexation of NpO22+ and PuO22+ with dipicolinic acid (DPA) has been investigated in 0.1M NaClO4 by spectrophotometry, microcalorimetry, and single crystal diffractometry. Formation of 1:1 and 1:2 (metal/ligand molar ratio) complexes of DPA with NpO22+ and PuO22+ were identified and the thermodynamic parameters were determined and compared with those of UO22+. All three hexavalent actinyl cations form strong 1:1 DPA complexes with slightly decreasing but comparable stability constants from UO22+ to PuO22+, whereas the stability constants of the 1:2 complexes (log(2)) decrease substantially along the series (16.3 for UO2L22-, 15.17 for NpO2L22-, and 14.17 for PuO2L22- at 25 degrees C). The enthalpies of complexation for the 1:2 complexes become less exothermic from UO2L22- (-28.9kJmol(-1)), through NpO2L22- (-27.2kJmol(-1)), and to PuO2L22- (-22.7kJmol(-1)). The trends in the thermodynamic parameters are discussed in terms of the effective charge of the cations and the steric constraints in the structures of the complexes. In addition, the features of the absorption spectra, including the wavelength and intensity of the absorption bands, are related to the perturbation of the ligand field and the symmetry of the actinyl complexes.
Solvation of Silver Ions in Noble Gases He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe

Abstract:We use a novel technique to solvate silver cations in small clusters of noble gases. The technique involves formation of large, superfluid helium nanodroplets that are subsequently electron ionized, mass-selected by deflection in an electric field, and doped with silver atoms and noble gases (Ng) in pickup cells. Excess helium is then stripped from the doped nanodroplets by multiple collisions with helium gas at room temperature, producing cluster ions that contain no more than a few dozen noble gas atoms and just a few (or no) silver atoms. Under gentle stripping conditions helium atoms remain attached to the cluster ions, demonstrating their low vibrational temperature. Under harsher stripping conditions some of the heavier noble gas atoms will be evaporated as well, thus enriching stable clusters Ng$_n$Ag$_m^+$ at the expense of less stable ones. This results in local anomalies in the cluster ion abundance which is measured in a high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Based on these data we identify specific "magic" sizes n of particularly stable ions. There is no evidence though for enhanced stability of Ng$_2$Ag$^+$, in contrast to the high stability of Ng$_2$Au$^+$ that derives from the covalent nature of the bond for heavy noble gases. "Magic" sizes are also identified for Ag$_2^+$ dimer ions complexed with He or Kr. Structural models will be tentatively proposed. A sequence of magic numbers $n$ = 12, 32, 44, indicative of three concentric solvation shells of icosahedral symmetry, is observed for He$_n$H$_2$O$^+$.
