Abstract:An exact result is obtained for the ground state of a 2D modulation-frustration Heisenberg model in a special region of parameter space. In this model the frustrated second and third nearest-neighbour couplings are introduced and the first nearest-neighbour coupling is periodically modulated in one direction. The exact ground state is proved to be the quantum spin liquid. The possible relationship between the model and the oxide superconductors is discussed.

Abstract:The geometric frustration of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the triangulated Kagome (triangles-in-triangles) lattice is investigated within the framework of an exact analytical method based on the generalized star-triangle mapping transformation. Ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams are obtained along with other exact results for the partition function, Helmholtz free energy, internal energy, entropy, and specific heat, by establishing a precise mapping relationship to the corresponding spin-1/2 Ising model on the Kagome lattice. It is shown that the residual entropy of the disordered spin liquid phase is for the quantum Ising-Heisenberg model significantly lower than for its semi-classical Ising limit (S_0/N_T k_B = 0.2806 and 0.4752, respectively), which implies that quantum fluctuations partially lift a macroscopic degeneracy of the ground-state manifold in the frustrated regime. The investigated model system has an obvious relevance to a series of polymeric coordination compounds Cu_9X_2(cpa)_6 (X=F, Cl, Br and cpa=carboxypentonic acid) for which we made a theoretical prediction about the temperature dependence of zero-field specific heat.

Exact ground state of a frustrated integer-spin modified Shastry-Sutherland model

Abstract:We consider a two-dimensional geometrically frustrated integer-spin Heisenberg system that admits an exact ground state. The system corresponds to a decorated square lattice with two coupling constants J1 and J2, and it can be understood as a generalized Shastry-Sutherland model. Main elements of the spin model are suitably coupled antiferromagnetic spin trimers with integer spin quantum numbers s and their ground state Phi will be the product state of the local singlet ground states of the trimers. We provide exact numerical data for finite lattices as well as analytical considerations to estimate the range of the existence in dependence on the ratio of the two couplings constants J2 and J1 and on the spin quantum number s. Moreover, we find that the magnetization curves as a function of the applied magnetic field shows plateaus and jumps. In the classical limit s \to \infty the model exhibits phases of three- and two-dimensional ground states separated by a one-dimensional (collinear) plateau state at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization.

Abstract:We present a certain class of two-dimensional frustrated quantum Heisenberg spin systems with multiple ring exchange interactions which are rigorously demonstrated to have quantum disordered ground states without magnetic long-range order. The systems considered in this paper are s=1/2 antiferromagnets on a honeycomb and square lattices, and an s=1 antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice. We find that for a particular set of parameter values, the ground state is a short-range resonating valence bond state or a valence bond crystal state. It is shown that these systems are closely related to the quantum dimer model introduced by Rokhsar and Kivelson as an effective low-energy theory for valence bond states.

Abstract:Bose-Fermi mixtures in one dimension are studied in detail on the basis of an exact solution. Corresponding to three possible choices of the referecce state in the quantum inverse scattering method, three sets of Bethe-ansatz equations are derived explicitly. The features of the ground state and low-lying excitations are investigated. The ground state phase diagram caused by the external field and chemical potential is obtained.

Abstract:We study a one-dimensional Bose system with repulsive delta-function interaction in the presence of an SU(2) intrinsic degree of freedom on the basis of the coordinate Bethe-ansatz. The ground state and the low-lying excitations are determined by both numerical and analytical methods. It is shown that the ground state is an isospin-ferromagnetic state, and the excitations are composed of three elementary particles: holons, antiholons, and isospinons. The isospinon is a triplet coupled to the "ferromagnetic" background anti-parallelly.
Simulating a Two-Dimensional Frustrated Spin System with Fermionic Resonating-Valence-bond States

Abstract:The frustrated Heisenberg J(1)-J(2) model on a square lattice is numerically investigated by variational Monte Carlo simulations. We propose an antiferromagnetic fermion resonating-valence-bond (AF-fRVB) state that has the ability to examine the entire phase diagram in the J1-J2 model. Two phase transition points, the second order around J(2)/J(1) = 0.45 and the first order around J(2)/J(1) = 0.6, can be extracted more clearly than the conventional bosonic RVB state. At the maximally frustrated point (J(2)/J(1) = 0.5), the AF-fRVB state shows the variational ground-state energy in the thermodynamic limit very close to the one estimated by the projected entangled pair state at the largest bond dimension available. On the other hand, in the frustrated regime 0.4 less than or similar to J(2)/J(1) <= 0.5, AF-fRVB states with ext s(2) (using the terminology in the field of iron-based superconductors) and d(xy) pairing symmetries are degenerate in the thermodynamic limit, implying the existence of gapless Dirac excitations in the spinon spectrum.

Abstract:The Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem is extended to generalized Heisenberg models related to unexceptional Lie algebras. It is shown that there are no energy gaps above the ground states for SO(4), Sp(2), and SU(4) Heisenberg models; but gaps are suspected to occur in SO(5) and SO(6) models. The nondegenerate ground state for these models is rigorously proven.

Abstract:Fermionic valence-bond approach in terms of SU(4) representation is proposed to describe the J(1)-J(2) frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (AF) model on a bipartite square lattice. A uniform mean field solution without breaking the translational and rotational symmetries describes a valence-bond spin-liquid state, interpolating the two different AF ordered states in the large J(1) and large J(2) limits, respectively. This novel spin-liquid state is gapless with the vanishing density of states at the Fermi nodal points. Moreover, a sharp resonance peak in the dynamic structure factor is predicted for momenta q=(0,0) and (pi,pi) in the strongly frustrated limit J(2)/J(1)similar to1/2, which can be checked by neutron scattering experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a method to understand the nature for the quantum disorder phase of the two-dimensional (2D) high spin frustrated model. The ground state and excitation properties of a fully frustrated 2D spin-1 model are studied based on a model whose groundstate can be found exactly. By analogy to the pseudo-potential approach in the fractional quantum Hall effect, we conclude that the ground states of the fully frustrated spin-1 model are doubly degenerate valance bond solid (VBS) states along the horizontal or vertical direction of the square lattice. We also find that the ground state could be characterized by a nonzero string order, which rarely happened in the 2D case. The method that we used is novel for a 2D spin system and reveals the connection between the fractional quantum hall effect and the frustrated 2D antiferromagnetism system. The VBS states capture the main character of the disordered phase in the 2D spin-1 frustrated system, and can be verified by a numerical method.

Abstract:A group of analytical wave functions is confirmed to be the ground state of a Hubbard model on a double-layer square lattice in the case of half-filling and in the case with one or two doped holes for a range of parameters. The method is based on the variational principle, and no approximations are applied. In the case of half-filling, the ground state is a product of local pairs. In the case of one or two holes, the doped holes are freely moving in the above background. In both cases there exists a long-range order of the evenness and oddness with respect to the layer parity.

Abstract:Employing the self-learning quantum Monte Carlo algorithm, we investigate the frustrated transverse-field triangle-lattice Ising model coupled to a Fermi surface. Without fermions, the spin degrees of freedom undergoes a second-order quantum phase transition between paramagnetic and clock-ordered phases. This quantum critical point (QCP) has an emergent U(1) symmetry and thus belongs to the (2+1)D XY universality class. In the presence of fermions, spin fluctuations introduce effective interactions among fermions and distort the bare Fermi surface towards an interacting one with hot spots and Fermi pockets. Near the QCP, non-Fermi-liquid behavior are observed at the hot spots, and the QCP is rendered into a different universality with Hertz-Millis type exponents. The detailed properties of this QCP and possibly related experimental systems are also discussed.

Abstract:After a short introduction on frustrated spin systems, we study in this chapter several two-dimensional frustrated Ising spin systems which can be exactly solved by using vertex models. We show that these systems contain most of the spectacular effects due to the frustration: high ground-state degeneracy, existence of several phases in the ground-state phase diagram, multiple phase transitions with increasing temperature, reentrance, disorder lines, partial disorder at equilibrium. Evidences of such effects in non solvable models are also shown and discussed.

Abstract:A one-dimensional model for two-band SU(2) bosons with isospin exchange interaction is solved by means of the nested Bethe-ansatz method. The features of the ground state and low-lying excitation state are discussed explicitly by numerical and analytical method. The thermodynamics of the system is analyzed by means of the thermodynamic Bethe-ansatz method, and some physical quantities, such as magnetization, specific heat, etc. are obtained explicitly in some special cases.

Abstract:The problem of finding the ground state of a frustration-free Hamiltonian carrying only two-body interactions between qubits is known to be solvable in polynomial time. It is also shown recently that, for any such Hamiltonian, there is always a ground state that is a product of single- or two-qubit states. However, it remains unclear whether the whole ground space is of any succinct structure. Here, we give a complete characterization of the ground space of any two-body frustration-free Hamiltonian of qubits. Namely, it is a span of tree tensor network states of the same tree structure. This characterization allows us to show that the problem of determining the ground state degeneracy is as hard as, but no harder than, its classical analog.

Abstract:The one-dimensional Heisenberg model in the presence of orbital degeneracy is studied at the SU(4) symmetric point by means of Bethe ansatz. Following Sutherland's previous work on an equivalent model, we discuss the ground state and the low-lying excitations more extensively in connection to the spin systems with orbital degeneracy. We show explicitly that the ground state is a SU(4) singlet. We study the degeneracies of the elementary excitations and the spectra of the generalized magnons consisting of these excitations. We also discuss the complex 2-strings in the context of the Bethe ansatz solutions. [S0163-1829(99)00238-6].

Abstract:Aiming to describe frustrated quantum magnets with non-magnetic singlet ground states, we have extended the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) loop-expansion to derive a generalized Quantum Dimer Model containing only connected terms up to arbitrary order. For the square lattice frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet (J1-J2-J3 model), an expansion up to 8th order shows that the leading correction to the original RK model comes from dimer moves on length-6 loops. This model free of the original sign problem is treated by advanced numerical techniques. The results suggest that a rotationally anisotropic plaquette phase is the ground state of the Heisenberg model in the parameter region of maximum frustration.
