Abstract:The Feynman-Haken variational path integral theory is generalized to calculate the binding energy Eb of an electron coupled simultaneously to an impurity with varing position and to a longitudinal-optical (LO) phonon field in parabolic quantum dots. Our calculations are applied to some semiconductor materials and the results for the binding energy are obtained for different confinement length R of the dot and arbitrary position of the impurity. It is shown that the polaronic correction to Eb decreases with the displacement of the impurity and increases with the confinement length of the dot. More interestingly, it is not so strong as the polaronic correction to the ground-state energy of the system, and the behaviours of their variation with R are totally different.

Abstract:Transport properties of a one-dimensional (1D) chain with randomly attached dimer impurities are investigated. Using the transfer-matrix technique, we present numerical results of the transmission coefficient as a function of the electron energy. It is found that an extended state exists in such a random 1D system and many resonant energies appear in periodic conditions. We present an analytic expression for the energy of the extended state which is determined by the potential of dimer-impurity and the hopping between the dots of the dimer.

Abstract:Flat band (FB) systems, i.e., models hosting dispersionless bands in their energy spectrum, have attracted great interest recently. The eigenstates of these FBs can be written as compact localized states (CLSs), meaning states having finite support only over a small, non-extensive portion of the lattice. When adjacent CLSs of a FB have spatial overlap, the subspace they span is, in general, non-orthogonal. Here, we consider precisely this scenario, in the form of a diamond chain with a finite magnetic flux per plaquette, which has a gapped midspectrum FB. After developing the general framework for projecting arbitrary operators onto a non-orthogonal subspace, we address the case of an open chain with small local impurities in the midchain plaquette. The framework is then applied to derive analytical expressions for the states of the FB affected by the impurities. The results are illustrated for three representative cases: two equal impurities, two symmetric impurities, and a single impurity. We also address the effects of diagonal disorder on the impurity states. Focusing on the equal impurities case, we show how these states effectively feel an averaged disorder determined by their spatial extension, which can be controlled by the flux. Due to this averaging effect, these states exhibit enhanced robustness to disorder. For the single-impurity case, we further reveal its exotic non-trivial topological phase, without precedent in the literature on Hermitian models, characterized by a half-integer winding number. By mapping the system onto an equivalent two-dimensional (2D) tight-binding lattice decorated with a central impurity line, the half-integer bulk invariants are shown to have a correspondence with the appearance of a single in-gap edge state when open boundary conditions (OBC) are imposed. Numerical simulations are performed to benchmark all analytical predictions.

Two-dimensional motion of an impurity under dynamic light-induced dipole forces in an atomic subwavelength array

Abstract:Long-range dipole-dipole interactions in subwavelength arrays of quantum emitters involve virtual photon exchange processes that impart forces on the emitters due to the imposed photon recoil. We perform a semi-classical analysis of the dynamics of an impurity allowed to freely move through a subwavelength array of atoms in different parameter regimes. We numerically solve the coupled set of equations between motional and spin degrees of freedom to elucidate the possible impurity trajectories realizable in this system. We find that the impurity can maintain quasi-stable orbits within the plaquette for long times. The regions through which these orbits pass are strongly dependent on the chosen atomic transition dipole moment. We further provide intuition for our findings based on a simplified model, where the lattice dynamics is adiabatically eliminated. As a final point of analysis, we also take the motional degrees of freedom of the lattice atoms into account, and study the polaron-like excitation induced in the kinetic state of the lattice by the impurity.

Abstract:We study propagation of excitations in one-dimensional tight-binding chains doped with random impurities that are classical Einstein oscillators. We find that the presence of impurities does not affect substantially the ballistic nature of the electronic propagation. Furthermore, for some oscillator masses, wave propagation is faster than that of the ordered tight-binding chain.

Abstract:A spin-1/2 magnetic impurity coupled to a one-dimensional correlated electron system have been studied by applying the density renormalization group method. The Kondo temperature is substantially enhanced by strong repulsive interactions in the chain, but it changes non-monotonically in the case of electron attraction. The magnetization of the impurity at zero-temperature shows local Fermi liquid behavior.

Abstract:We present numerical studies of soliton propagation in a classical Heisenberg chain which contains a disordered binary-alloy segment having impurities of spin different from that of the host with density p. It is demonstrated that the reflected and the transmitted solitons exhibit robust features. The transmission coefficient decreases with increasing soliton energy in the range investigated, and displays a long-tail power-law length dependence with an exponent close to -1. It is also shown that the impurity bonds, which connect neighbouring sites with different spins, are the elementary scattering units which lead to wave interferences important for the soliton propagation.

Abstract:We investigate the variant regularly diluted situations of [Formula: see text] in S=1 isotropic antiferromagnetic chains by the quantum Monte Carlo loop cluster algorithm. Our results manifest significant different magnetic properties in the ground state with respect to the odd (even) host S=1 spins in one unit cell with an impurity S=1/2, and the doped system gradually transits to the pure Haldane chain in two different tendencies with the decreasing of the impurity concentrations.

Abstract:Abstract Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, we study the quantum coherence in one‐dimensional disordered spin chains and Fermi systems. We consider in detail spinless fermions on a ring, and compare the influence of several kinds of impurities in a gapless and a dimerized, gapped system. In the translation‐invariant system a so‐called site‐impurity, which can be realized by a local potential or a modification of one link, increases for repulsive interaction, and decreases for attractive interaction, upon renormalization. The weakening of two neighbouring bonds, which is a realization of a so‐called bond‐impurity, on the other hand, is healed for repulsive interaction, but enhanced for intermediate attractive interactions. This leads to a strong suppression of the quantum coherence measured by the phase sensitivity, but not to localization. Adding a local distortion to a dimerized system, we find that even the presence of a single site‐impurity increases the metallic region found in the dimerized model. For a strong dimerization and a high barrier, an additional sharp maximum, is seen in the phase sensitivity as a function of interaction, already for systems with about 100 sites. A bond‐impurity in the dimerized system also opens a small metallic window in the otherwise isolating regime.

Abstract:We consider the eigenvalue problem for one-dimensional linear Schrödinger lattices (tight-binding) with an embedded few-sites linear or nonlinear, Hamiltonian or non-conservative defect (an oligomer). Such a problem arises when considering scattering states in the presence of (generally complex) impurities as well as in the stability analysis of nonlinear waves. We describe a general approach based on a matching of solutions of the linear portions of the lattice at the location of the oligomer defect. As specific examples, we discuss both linear and nonlinear, Hamiltonian and PT-symmetric dimers and trimers. In the linear case, this approach provides us a handle for semi-analytically computing the spectrum [this amounts to the solution of a polynomial equation]. In the nonlinear case, it enables the computation of the linearization spectrum around the stationary solutions. The calculations showcase the oscillatory instabilities that strongly nonlinear states typically manifest.

Abstract:Motivated by recent discoveries of novel superconductors such as NaxCoO2.yH(2)O and Sr2RuO4, we analyze features of quasiparticle scattering due to impurities and interfaces for possible gapful d(x)(2)-y(2)+id(xy) and p(x)+ip(y) Cooper pairing. A bound state appears near a local impurity, and a band of bound states form near an interface. We obtained analytically the bound-state energy, and calculated the space and energy dependent local density of states resolvable by high-resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy. For comparison we also sketch results of impurity and interface states if the pairing is nodal p or d wave.
Excitonic states of an impurity in a Fermi gas

Abstract:We study excitonic states of an atomic impurity in a Fermi gas, i.e., bound states consisting of the impurity and a hole. Previous studies considered bound states of the impurity with particles from the Fermi sea where the holes only formed part of the particle-hole dressing. Within a two-channel model, we find that, for a wide range of parameters, excitonic states are not ground but metastable states. We further calculate the decay rates of the excitonic states to polaronic and dimeronic states and find they are long lived, scaling as $\Gamma^{\rm{Exc}}_ {\rm{Pol}} \propto ( \Delta\omega)^{5.5}$ and $\Gamma^{\rm{Exc}}_ {\rm{Dim}} \propto (\Delta\omega)^{4}$. We also find that a new continuum of exciton-particle states should be considered alongside the previously known dimeron-hole continuum in spectroscopic measurements. Excitons must therefore be considered as a new ingredient in the study of metastable physics currently being explored experimentally.

Self-trapping at a Nonlinear Impurity in a Heisenberg Ferromagnetic Chain

Abstract:We study the problem of a linearized Heisenberg ferromagnetic chain in the presence of a nonlinear impurity. The exchange coupling of the impurity to its nearest-neighbour spins is anisotropic and expanded to the fourth order of the magnon operators, while the rest of the couplings are isotropic and linearized. We show that, in a parameter region, a magnon bound state trapped at the impurity exists with energy higher than the magnon band of the linearized chain. The calculation of the transmission coefficient of plane waves through such an impurity reveals the existence of completely unscattered modes with transmission equal to unity. We also demonstrate a corresponding dynamical self-trapping phenomenon at the non-linear impurity by a numerical study of the time-integrated autocorrelation function.
Behavior of a frustrated quantum spin chain with bond dimerization

Abstract:We clarified behavior of the excitation gap in a frustrated S=1/2 quantum spin chain with bond dimerization by using the numerical diagonalization of finite systems and a variational approach. The model interpolates between the independent dimer model and the S=1 spin chain by changing a strength of the dimerization. The energy gap is minimum at the fully-frustrated point, where a localized kink and a freely mobile anti-kink govern the low-lying excitations. Away from the point, a kink and an antikink form a bound state by an effective triangular potential between them. The consequential gap enhancement and the localization length of the bound state is obtained exactly in the continuous limit. The gap enhancement obeys a power law with exponent 2/3. The method and the obtained results are common to other frustrated double spin-chain systems, such as the one-dimensional J_1 - J_2 model, or the frustrated ladder model.

Dynamics of polaron in a polymer chain with impurities

Abstract:. In a polymer chain, an extra electron or hole distorts the chain to form a charged polaron, which is the charge carrier being responsible for conductivity. When an intermediate-strength electric field is applied, the polaron will be accelerated for a short time and then move at a constant velocity. The dynamical process of polaron in a polymer chain with impurities is simulated within a non-adiabatic evolution method, in which the electron wave function is described by the time-dependent Schrödinger equation while the polymer lattice is treated classically by a Newtonian equation of motion. We have considered two kinds of dynamical processes, one is the field-induced depinning of a charged polaron, which is initially bound by an attractive impurity; and the other is the scattering of a polaron from an impurity. In the former process, the charged polaron will depart from the attractive impurity only for the applied field with strength over a threshold, otherwise, the polaron will oscillate around the impurity. In the latter process, the charged polaron moves through the impurity in the presence of an electric field while it will be bounced back for a repulsive impurity or trapped to oscillate around an attractive impurity in the case that the applied electric field is weak and just be present for the polaron acceleration.
Quantum impurity with 2/3 local moment in 1D quantum wires: an NRG study

Abstract:We study a Kondo state that is strongly influenced by its proximity to an w^-1/2 singularity in the metallic host density of states. This singularity occurs at the bottom of the band of a 1D chain, for example. We first analyze the non-interacting system: A resonant state e_d, located close to the band singularity, suffers a strong `renormalization', such that a bound state is created below the bottom of the band in addition to a resonance in the continuum. When e_d is positioned right at the singularity, the spectral weight of the bound state is 2/3, irrespective of its coupling to the conduction electrons. The interacting system is modeled using the Single Impurity Anderson Model, which is then solved using the Numerical Renormalization Group method. We observe that the Hubbard interaction causes the bound state to suffer a series of transformations, including level splitting, transfer of spectral weight, appearance of a spectral discontinuity, changes in binding energy (the lowest state moves farther away from the bottom of the band), and development of a finite width. When e_d is away from the singularity and in the intermediate valence regime, the impurity occupancy is lower. As e_d moves closer to the singularity, the system partially recovers Kondo regime properties, i.e., higher occupancy and lower Kondo temperature T_K. The impurity thermodynamic properties show that the local moment fixed point is also strongly affected by the existence of the bound state. When e_d is close to the singularity, the local moment fixed point becomes impervious to charge fluctuations (caused by bringing e_d close to the Fermi energy), in contrast to the local moment suppression that occurs when e_d is away from the singularity. We also discuss an experimental implementation that shows similar results to the quantum wire, if the impurity's metallic host is an armchair graphene nanoribbon.

Abstract:We investigate the transport properties of a one-dimensional(1D) chain with randomly side-coupled impurities,By using the transfer matrix technique,we present numerical results of the transmission coefficient as a function of the electron energy,It is found that an extended state will be shown in such a random 1D system if the impurities are side-coupled to the chain with not only the nearest-neighbour bonds but also the next-nearestneighbour bonds.We present an analytical expression for the energy of this extended state,which is determined by the strength of the nearest and next-nearest couplings between the impurities and the chain.The obtained results can be used to explain the transport properties of DNA chains and other quasi-1D organic structures.
Bound electron states in a charged chain within the Dirac description

Abstract:For the first time the exact analytical expressions for the three-dimensional bound electron states in the Coulomb field of the chain consisting of positively charged ions, are obtained within the Dirac description, using the new spinor invariant found for this problem. It is demonstrated that within such approach the coupling between electron spin and its one-dimensional propagation along the chain naturally arise, without any need to include artificially into the equations the so-called spin-orbit interaction.

Abstract:We study a model describing $N$ identical bosonic atoms trapped in a double-well potential together with a single impurity atom, comparing and contrasting it throughout with the Dicke model. As the boson-impurity coupling strength is varied, there is a symmetry-breaking pitchfork bifurcation which is analogous to the quantum phase transition occurring in the Dicke model. Through stability analysis around the bifurcation point, we show that the critical value of the coupling strength has the same dependence on the parameters as the critical coupling value in the Dicke model. We also show that, like the Dicke model, the mean-field dynamics go from being regular to chaotic above the bifurcation and macroscopic excitations of the bosons are observed. Overall, the boson-impurity system behaves like a poor man's version of the Dicke model.

Impurity States in D-wave Superconductors

Abstract:The structure of the order parameter and the excitation spectrum are investigated for isolated impurities in d-wave superconductors. Atomic scale impurities, or defects, scatter quasiparticles and lead to local suppression (pair-breaking) near the impurity. The pair-breaking effect arises from the formation of quasiparticle states bound to the impurity. The corresponding reduction in spectral weight in the pair condensate is responsible for pair-breaking. The formation of the bound state is due to multiple Andreev scattering by the combined effects of potential scattering, which leads to changes in momentum of the scattered quasiparticle, and the anisotropy of the d-wave order on the Fermi surface. The spectral weight of the bound state decays exponentially away from the impurity on a length scale $\xi_{*}=\hbar v_f/ \sqrt{|\Delta({\bf p}_f)|^2-\varepsilon_{*}^2}$, where $\varepsilon_{*}$ is the energy of the impurity state. The continuum spectrum exhibits Tomasch oscillations due to the interference between Andreev reflected particle- and hole-like quasiparticles.
