Abstract:A new functionalized heteroleptic iridium complex coordinated with 1-phenylisoquinoline（1-piq） and a functionalized β-diketone（G1）,Ir（1-piq）2G1,was synthesized and characterized by 1H-NMR,mass spectrometry and elemental analysis.The larger conjugation of the replacement of acetylacetone（acac） by a functionalized β-diketonate ligand led to a significant decrease in the HOMO level toward vacuum level,while Ir（1-piq）2G1 and Ir（1-piq）2（acac） showed red phosphorescent emissions of about 620 nm in dichloromethane solution.The phosphorescent polymer light-emitting devices were achieved,with the complexes incorporated with polyfluorene（PFO） as a host polymer doped with 30% of 5-（4-biphenylyl）-2-（4-tert-butylphenyl）-1,3,4-oxadiazole（PBD） as electron transport material.The energy transfer mechanism of the devices was also discussed.The lower EL performance of Ir（1-piq）2G1 is ascribed to the inter-ligand energy transfer,indicating that it is important to control the energy level of the cyclometalated and ancillary ligands.

Abstract:Using 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-4-(trifluoromethyl) pyrimidine as main ligand and tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate as ancillary ligand, one iridium complex was synthesized. This complex shows a green emission peaking at 543 nm with a quantum efficiency yield as 48% in deareated CH2Cl2 solution. It also has good thermal stability with a decomposition temperature of 351 degrees C. Using this material as emitter, the organic light-emitting diode shows good performances with a maximum luminance 42 898 cd/m(2), a maximum current efficiency up to 54.29 cd/A with low efficiency roll-off. At the luminance of 5000 and 10 000 cd/m(2), the current efficiencies are still kept at 46.70 and 40.63 cd/A, respectively. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:To obtain dopants owing excellent electron mobility, four novel iridium (III) complexes (Ir(tfmppm)(2)(acac), Ir (tfmppm)(2)(tpip), Ir(f-4-tfmppm)(2)(tpip) and Ir(f-3-tfmppm)(2)(tPiP)) with green emission using 2-(2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-4-yl)pyrimidine (tfmppm), 2-(2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-4-yl)-5-fluoropyrimidine (f-4-tfmppm) and 2-(2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-3-yl)-5-fluoropyrimidine (f-3-tfmppm) as main ligands, acetylacetonate (acac) and tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate (tpip) as ancillary ligands, were investigated, respectively. Due to the variation of the structures among the complexes, the photoluminescence quantum yield (up to 94%) and electron mobility can be regulated gradually, which would broaden the recombination zone, balance the distribution of holes and electrons, leading to excellent electroluminescence (EL) performances. Among four emitters, the organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using Ir(f-3-tfmppm)(2)(tpip) display the best EL performances with a maximum current efficiency of 92.83 cd A(-1) and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 29.5%, suggesting these materials have potential application in OLEDs.
Modulation of Iridium(iii) Phosphorescence Via Photochromic Ligands: a Density Functional Theory Study.

Abstract:The photochromic iridium(iii) complex (Py-BTE)(2)Ir(acac) synthesized by Tan et al. [W. Tan et al., Org. Lett. 2009, 11, 161-164] has shown distinct photo-reactivity and photo-controllable phosphorescence. We here present a density functional theory study on the (Py-BTE)(2)Ir(acac) complex to explore the mechanism at the molecular level and to help further design of photochromic iridium(iii) complexes with the desirable properties. The hybrid functional PBE0, with 25% Hartree-Fock exchange, is found to give an optimal structure compared with X-ray crystallographic data. The absorption bands are well reproduced by using time-dependent density functional theory calculations, lending the possibility to assign the metal-to-ligand and intra-ligand charge transfer transitions. The radiative and nonradiative deactivation rate constants, k(r) and k(nr), are rationalized for both the open-ring and closed-ring forms of the complex. The very large k(nr) and small k(r) make the closed-ring form of the complex non-emissive. The triplet reactivity of the Py-BTE ligand is also studied by performing density functional theory calculations on the potential energy surfaces of the ground state and the lowest triplet state.

Abstract:Two near-infrared (NIR)-emitting iridium(III) complexes of (Me-BIPz)(2)Ir(acac) and (tBu-BIPz)(2)Ir(acac), (i.e. Ir-1 and Ir-2 ) are designed and synthesized, which contain methyl and t-butyl substituted 14-phenyl-14H-benzo[a]indolo[3,2-c]phenazine (BIPz), respectively with a rigid D-A-type coordinated core. The influence of the rigid D-A skeleton and the attached groups on photoelectronic properties of iridium complexes is primarily investigated. An advanced external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.65% with a radiant emittance of 13057 mW Sr-1 m -2 at 746 nm is obtained in the Ir-2-doped polymer light-emitting devices. This EQE value is 1.5 times higher than that in the Ir-1-doped devices. Furthermore, this type of iridium complexes exhibits better NIR-emitting properties than most of the reported iridium complexes containing the C<^>N ligand with two coordinated aryl rings. The results indicate that the rigid coordinated core of C<^>N ligand is an effective strategy to construct high-efficiency NIR-emitting iridium complexes. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Zwitterionic Iridium Complexes: Synthesis, Luminescent Properties, and Their Application in Cell Imaging.

Abstract:A series of phosphorescent zwitterionic iridium(III) complexes, with 4-carboxy-2, 2'-bipyridine-4'-carboxylate (Hdcbpy) as ancillary ligand, Ir(C(wedge)N)(2)(Hdcbpy) (C(wedge)N = 1-phenylpyrazole (ppz), 1-phenyl-pyridine (ppy), 2-(4',6'-difluoro-phenyl)pyridine (dfppy), 1-phenyl-isoquinoline (piq), dibenzo[f,h]quinoxaline (dbq)), were prepared and characterized. Their photophysical properties were studied, and intense luminescence emissions were observed based on metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer ((3)MLCT), ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer ((3)LLCT), ligand-centered transitions ((3)LC, i.e., (3)pi --> pi*), or intraligand-charge-transfer ((3)ILCT) excited states, which were confirmed by theoretical calculations. The quantum yield of Ir(dfppy)(2)(Hdcbpy) is as high as 0.106 in aqueous solution. With Hdcbpy as a hydrophilic part, their amphiphilic structures as further confirmed by X-ray single crystal data endow them with different solubilities in phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 7.0). The compounds were successfully applied as luminescent dyes for cell imaging in aqueous solution. Their different stain ability in cell imaging was fairly well supported by the experimental data based on the measurement of oil/water partition coefficients and encapsulation/release with liposomes.

Abstract:Herein four novel iridium(III) complexes (tfpmd) 2 Ir(dpppy) ( Ir1a , tfpmd = 2-(4-(trifluoromethyl) phenyl) pyrimidine, dpppy = P ,P-diphenyl-N-(pyridin-2-yl)phosphinic amide), (tfpmd) 2 Ir(dppq) ( Ir1b , dppq = P ,P-diphenyl-N-(quinolin-2-yl)phosphinic amide), (tfpqz) 2 Ir(dpppy) ( Ir2a , tfpzq = 4-(4-(trifluoromethyl) phenyl) quinazoline) and (tfpqz) 2 Ir(dppq) ( Ir2b ) were synthetized, and their structures, opto-physical, and electro-chemical properties were investigated in detail. The crystal structure shows that these complexes exhibit pseudo-octahedral geometry around iridium atom coordinated by C, N atoms from cyclometalated and ancillary ligands. Interestingly, two coordinated nitrogen atoms from the ancillary ligand form an unusual quaternary ring with the central iridium ion. Ir1a and Ir1b emit pure-green light with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) color coordinates of (0.25, 0.67) and (0.22, 0.67), respectively, in CH 2 Cl 2 solution. With the increase of the degree of conjugation of the cyclometalated ligand from tfpmd to tfpqz, the luminescence of complexes Ir2a and Ir2b is greatly red-shifted, and pure-red emission with CIE coordinates of (0.66, 0.34) and (0.66, 0.34), respectively, is obtained. The photophysical behaviors were reasonably explained by quantum chemical calculations. The calculation results shows that their emission is ascribed to the mixed 3 MLCT (metal-ligand charge transfer, dπ(Ir)→π*(cyclometalated ligand)) and 3 LLCT (ligand-ligand charge transfer, π(ancillary ligand)→π*(cyclometalated ligand)) states. Owing to their good thermal and electrochemical stabilities, organic light emitting diode (OLED) devices with dual-emitting layer structure and a space interlayer were fabricated and exhibited high electroluminescent properties and mild efficiency roll-off (14%-21%).

Abstract:Seven iridium complexes with the general structure of (tfmppy)(2)Ir(L-1-L-7) (tfmppy = 4-trifluoromethyl phenylpyridine) were synthesized, where ancillary ligands L1-L7 are fluorine-or trifluoromethyl-substituted (-F or -CF3) N-(diphenylphosphoryl)benzamide derivatives. Single crystal X-ray diffraction study was undertaken on all complexes, which showed that each adopted the distorted octahedral coordination geometry with the conventional trans-N, cis-C arrangement in the coordination sphere. Electrochemical study confirmed the electron-withdrawing -F and -CF3 substituents on the ancillary ligands have effects on the Ir-III/IV redox couples and HOMO/LUMO energy levels. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation results showed that the HOMOs are composed of Ir 5d orbital (about 55%) and pi orbitals of the phenyl rings (about 38%) in tfmppy ligands, whilst the LUMOs are mostly localized on both the phenyl and pyridine rings of tfmppy (about 90%). All the complexes own the similar emission peaks around 520 nm with short phosphorescent decay time about 2 mu s at ambient temperature and relatively high internal quantum efficiencies from 37.5 to 61.2%. This work showed that the iridium complexes with N-(diphenylphosphoryl)benzamide derivatives as the ancillary ligands possess the potential as phosphorence dopants in the organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Abstract:Synthesis of the multidentate coordinated chelate N3C-H-2, composed of a linked functional pyridyl pyrazole fragment plus a peripheral phenyl and pyridyl unit, was obtained using a multistep protocol. Preparation of Ir(III) metal complexes bearing a N3C chelate in the tridentate (kappa(3)), tetradentate (kappa(4)), and pentadentate (kappa(5)) modes was executed en route from two nonemissive dimer intermediates [Ir(kappa(3)-N3CH)Cl-2](2) (1) and [Ir(kappa(4)-N3C)Cl](2) (2). Next, a series of mononuclear Ir(III) complexes with the formulas [Ir(kappa(4)-N3C)Cl(py)] (3), [Ir(kappa(4)-N3C)Cl(dmap)] (4), [Ir(kappa(4)-N3C)-Cl(mpzH)] (5), and [Ir(kappa(4)-N3C)Cl(dmpzH)] (6), as well as diiridium complexes [Ir-2(kappa(5)-N3C)-(mpz)(2)(CO)(H)(2)] (7) and [Ir-2(kappa(5)-N3C)-(dmpz)(2)(CO)(H)(2)] (8), were obtained upon treatment of dimer 2 with pyridine (py), 4-dimethylaminopyridine (dmap), 4-methylpyrazole (mpzH), and 3,5-dimethylpyrazole (dmpzH), respectively. These Ir(III) metal complexes were identified using spectroscopic methods and by X-ray crystallographic analysis of representative derivatives 3, 5, and 7. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties were investigated and confirmed by the theoretical simulations. Notably, green-emitting organic light-emitting diode (OLED) on the basis of Ir(III) complex 7 gives a maximum external quantum efficiency up to 25.1%. This result sheds light on the enormous potential of this tetradentate coordinated chelate in the development of highly efficient iridium complexes for OLED applications.

Abstract:An ionic iridium(III) complex [Ir(F(2)dpyb)(bzdpp)(2)C1]OTf] with 1,3-difluoro-4,6-di(2-pyridinyl) benzene (F(2)dpybH) terdentate ligand and benzyldiphenylphosphine (bzdpp) ligand was synthesized and characterized. The structure of iridium complex was verified by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. It crystallizes in monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n with a = 14.3654(7), b = 23.0026(10), c = 15.7964(7) angstrom,beta = 97.6029(11), V = 5173.9(4) angstrom(3), Z = 4, F(000) = 2552, D-c = 1.645 Mg/m(3), M-r = 1281.49 and mu = 0.071 mm(-1). The UV-vis absorption and phosphorescence of the complex were discussed. The complex was 'aggregation induced emission (AIE)' active. It exhibited no emission in CH2Cl2 solution but strong blue-green emission in solid state under ultraviolet light excitation. The complex emitted a strong phosphorescence centered at 493 nm when doped in PMMA. Its lifetime is 0.755 mu s and quantum yield is approximately 0.134.

Abstract:The synthesis and photophysical, electrochemical, and electrophosphorescent properties of a series of cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes based on quinoline derivatives (C boolean AND N) and different beta-diketonate ligands are reported. The iridium complexes contain two quinoline derivatives (C boolean AND N) and a single monoanionic beta-diketone (LX), i.e., Ir(C boolean AND N)(2)(LX), where LX denotes acetylacetonate (acac) or 1-phenyl-3- methyl-4-isobutyryl-5-pyrazolonate (PMIP). Most of the iridium complexes in solution show phosphorescent emission with high quantum efficiencies (0.05-0.25) and microsecond lifetimes (0.5-1.67 mu s). The intense phosphorescent emission of these complexes is the result of significant spin-orbit coupling of the iridium center. By modification of the chemical structures of quinoline derivative ligands, the emissive wavelengths of complexes can be tuned from 596 to 634 nm. Interestingly, the photoluminescence quantum efficiency can be improved by the replacement of acac with PMIP. Energy transfer from the hosts poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) and 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) to the guest iridium complex was investigated. Moreover, three iridium complexes were used as dopants to fabricate electrophosphorescent polymer-based light-emitting diodes (PLEDs). The PLEDs show red emission with high external quantum efficiencies, ranging from 7.0 to 9.6%.
Photophysical Properties of Heteroleptic Iridium Complexes Containing Carbazole-Functionalized Beta-Diketonates

Abstract:Twelve iridium complexes with general formula of Ir(C;N)(2)(LX) [C;N represents the cyclometalated ligand, i.e. 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl) pyridine (dfppy), 2-phenylpyridine (ppy), dibenzo{f, h}quinoxaline (DBQ); LX stands for beta-diketonate, i.e. acetyl acetonate (acac), 1-(carbazol-9-yl)-5,5-dimethylhexane-2,4-diketonate (CBDK), 1-(carbazol-9-yl)-5,5,6,6,7,7,7-heptafluoroheptane-2,4-diketonate (CHFDK), 1-(N-ethyl-carbazol-3-yl)-4,4,5,5,6,6,6-heptafluorohexane-1,3-diketonate (ECHFDK)] are synthesized, characterized and their photophysical properties are systemically studied. In addition, crystals of Ir(DBQ)(2)(CHFDK) and Ir(DBQ)(2)(acac) are obtained and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The choice of these iridium complexes provides an opportunity for tracing the effect of the triplet energy level of ancillary ligands on the photophysical and electrochemical behaviors. Data show that if the triplet energy level of the beta-diketonate is higher than that of the Ir(C;N)(2) fragment and there is no superposition on the state density map, strong (3)LC or (3)MLCT-based phosphorescence can be obtained. Alternatively, if the state density map of the two parts are in superposition, the (3)LC or (3)MLCT-based transition will be quenched at room temperature. Density functional theory calculations show that these complexes can be divided into two categories. The lowest excited state is mainly determined by C;N but not beta-diketonate when the difference between the triplet energy levels of the two parts is large. However, when this difference is very small, the lowest excited state will be determined by both sides. This provides a satisfactory explanation for the experimental observations.

Abstract:A new phosphorescent(2-phenyl)-benzothiazolate iridium(Ⅲ)acetylacetone complex is synthe- sized with 2-aminothiophenol,benzoyl-chloride and iridium trichloride anhydrate.The yield of the complex is 45.47 and the melting point in the range of 303～304℃.The complex is characterized by mass spectrometry,FT-IR and ele- mental analysis.The complex shows strong singlet and triplet metal to ligand charge-transfer from 350ran to 450nm. The complex also produces a strong photoluminescence at 566.0nm,It suggests that the complex is a new phosphores- cent material.

Abstract:A new iridium complex containing coumarin derivative as a cyclometalated ligand (1L) and a carbazole-functionalized β-diketonate (2L) as the ancillary ligand, namely, Ir(III)bis(3-(pyridin-2-yl)coumarinato-N,C4)(1-(9-butyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)-4,4,4-trifluoro-butane-1,3-dionato-O,O) (Ir(1L)2(2L)), was synthesized. The crystal structure of Ir(1L)2(2L) was determined via combined wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which showed π–π the interactions of Ir(1L)2(2L) molecules stacking along the crystal axes. The doped light-emitting diodes using this novel Ir(1L)2(2L) complex as the phosphorescent dopant were fabricated. At a Ir(1L)2(2L) concentration of 6.0 wt%, a green-yellow emitting OLED was achieved with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 6.11% and a maximum luminous efficiency of 22.55 cd A−1 at the current density of 6.06 mA cm−2, and a maximum luminance of 6653 cd m−2 at 10.7 V. Furthermore, two reference complexes Ir(1L)2(acac) and Ir(1L)2(TTA) were also used as emitters to fabricate OLED devices with the same device configuration. The maximum luminous efficiency of Ir(1L)2(acac) doped device was measured to be 20.04 cd A−1 at 2.15 mA cm−2 (10.0 wt%), while the doped device of Ir(1L)2(TTA) had a maximum luminous efficiency of 16.59 cd A−1 at 1.36 mA cm−2. The better performances of Ir(1L)2(2L) doped devices could be largely attributed to an improved hole-transporting property due to the introduction of the carbazole moiety.

Abstract:A new complex of (MDPP)2Ir(Cl)PPY was synthesized. The UV-Vis absorption spectra of the complex showed 3MLCT (triplet metal to ligand charge transfer) absorption at 475 nm and strong photoluminescence was at 558 nm at room temperature, suggesting its potential application in organic light emitting device (OLED) as a promising phosphorescent material. Compared with complex (MDPP)2Ir(acac), (MDPP)2Ir(Cl)PPY showed a 22 nm blue shift in photoluminescence. This result suggests that PPY is an effective auxiliary ligand in adjusting the luminescence color of the complex. The feasibility for some natural compounds as auxiliary ligand was also discussed.

Abstract:A new cyclometalated iridium(III) complex with the formula [Ir(DPQ)(2)(acac)] (DPQ= 2,3-diphenylquinoxaline; acac=acetylacetone) was prepared. The structure of the complex was confirmed by Elemental Analysis (EA), H-1 NMR, and mass spectroscopy (MS). The UV-vis absorption and photoluminescent properties of the complex were investigated.

Abstract:A series of cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes has been designed and synthesized, and their photophysical, photochromic, and electrochemical properties have been studied. The X-ray crystal structure of complex 2 has been determined. The emission properties of the complexes have been shown to be readily perturbed through the modification of the electronic properties of the phenylpyridine ligand. With different substituents at the phenylpyridine ligand of iridium(III) complexes of 1 (-H), 2 (-OMe), 3 (-CHO), and 4 (-CF3), they can display intense (MLCT)-M-3 [d pi(Ir) -> pi*(diimine)] luminescence from 530 to 640 nm to span across the green to orange region. The spectral assignment is also in agreement with the electrochemical studies and DFT calculations. In addition, the photochromic behavior can be easily modulated by varying the substituents on the C boolean AND N ligand without the need for tedious modification of the spirooxazine framework. By analyzing the kinetic profiles of backward bleaching reactions, less electron-rich iridium(III) complexes can stabilize the merocyanine form with a higher activation barrier. The studies have provided not only fundamental understanding on structure-property relationships that govern the versatile luminescence behavior of these Ir(III) complexes but also the guiding principles in the molecular design for the future developments of visible light-driven photoswitches.

Abstract:A novel diarylethene-based iridium(III) complex was synthesized as a phosphorescence probe for monitoring living cells. The switchable phosphorescence complex in solution and within living cells was controlled by two distinguishable visible-light irradiations, which suggests that this complex can be developed as a promising probe with weak photodamage for biological samples.
