Expression of Pituitary Tumor Transforming Gene in Pituitary Macroadenomas and Its Relationships with Tumor Invasiveness

Abstract:Objective To investigate the expression of pituitary tumor transforming gene(PTTG) in pituitary macroadenomas and its relationships with tumor invasiveness. Methods Forty patients with pituitary macroadenomas,including nonfunctional macroadenomas(n=22),growth hormone macroadenomas(n=8) and prolactin macroadenomas((n=10)) were analyzed for PTTG expressions by the immunohistochemical method.Clinical data,including radiological classification,were used to determine the association between gene expression and the invasiveness of the cavernous(sinus.) Results The expression of PTTG was increased significantly in the macroadenomas.It was much higher in the invasive macroadenomas than in the noninvasive tumors(P<0.01). Conclusion The expression of PTTG was related to invasion of the cavernous sinus in pituitary macroadenomas.Thus,the level of PTTG expression may not only be used as a useful marker for evaluating the outcome of pituitary macroadenomas,but also for predicting tumor reoccurrence and affording reliable indicators for postoperation radiation therapy.
