Expression and significance of VEGF and NSE in benign and malignant pheochromocytoma

Abstract:Objective To explore the expression and significance of tumor makers(VEGF and NSE) in benign and malignant pheochromocytoma,and analyze the potential clinical value and pathological significance that could provid auxiliary basis to distinguish its benign and malignant. Methods The tumor tissue samples from 18 cases of benign tumor,16 cases of malignant tumor and 17 cases of normal adrenal medulla were embedded with the paraffin postoperatively.The intensity and area of the expression for VEGF and NSE were studied by immunohistochemical staining(SP) in three kinds of tissue.The results of the staining were judged under the microscope. Results ①The positive rate for VEGF in malignant was significant higher than that in benign tissue(P<0.01).There was not significant difference in the positive rate of staining for VEGF between benign and normal tissue(P>0.05).The strong positive rate for VEGF in malignant was significantly much higher than that in benign tissue(P<0.01).②There was not significant difference in the positive rate of staining for NSE between benign and malignant pheochromocytoma(P<0.05),and the expression of NSE in benign tissue was also higher than normal tissue(P<0.05).The strong positive rate for VEGF in malignant was higher than benign tissue(P<0.05).③ The co-positive rate of VEGF and NSE in malignant tissue was higher than benign tissue(P<0.01). Conclusions Clinically,the detection of VEGF and NSE may offer valuable basis to distinguish the benign and malignant pheochromocytoma.The co-detection of them may imrove further the sensitivity of this approach.
