Abstract:We prove a Noether-Lefschetz type theorem for varieties of r-planes in complete intersections. We then use it to study the Abel-Jacobi map of planes on a smooth cubic fivefold.

Abstract:Euler-symmetric projective varieties, introduced by Baohua Fu and Jun-Muk Hwang in 2020, are nondegenerate projective varieties admitting many $\mathbb{C}^{\times}$-actions of Euler type. They are quasi-homogeneous and uniquely determined by their fundamental forms at a general point. In this paper, we study complete intersections in projective spaces which are Euler-symmetric. It is proven that such varieties are complete intersections of hyperquadrics and the base locus of the second fundamental form at a general point is again a complete intersection.

Arithmetic and birational properties of linear spaces on intersections of two quadrics

Abstract:We study rationality questions for Fano schemes of linear spaces on smooth complete intersections of two quadrics, especially over non-closed fields. Our approach is to study hyperbolic reductions of the pencil of quadrics associated to $X$. We prove that the Fano schemes $F_r(X)$ of $r$-planes are birational to symmetric powers of hyperbolic reductions, generalizing results of Reid and Colliot-Th\'el\`ene--Sansuc--Swinnerton-Dyer, and we give several applications to rationality properties of $F_r(X)$. For instance, we show that if $X$ contains an $(r+1)$-plane over a field $k$, then $F_r(X)$ is rational over $k$. When $X$ has odd dimension, we show a partial converse for rationality of the Fano schemes of second maximal linear spaces, generalizing results of Hassett--Tschinkel and Benoist--Wittenberg. When $X$ has even dimension, the analogous result does not hold, and we further investigate this situation over the real numbers. In particular, we prove a rationality criterion for the Fano schemes of second maximal linear spaces on these even-dimensional complete intersections over $\mathbb R$; this may be viewed as extending work of Hassett--Koll\'ar--Tschinkel.

Abstract:For a projective variety $X$ we have the intersection complex $L$-class defined by using the self-duality of the intersection complex and also the constant coefficient $L$-class which is the specialization at $y=1$ of the Hirzebruch characteristic class defined by taking a cubic hyperresolution. We show that these two $L$-classes differ if they do for an intersection of general hyperplane sections which has only cohomologically isolated singularities. So the study of a sufficient condition for non-coincidence is reduced to the latter case, where a necessary and sufficient condition has been obtained in terms of mixed Hodge structures on the stalks of the intersection complex in our previous paper. We also construct examples of projective varieties where the two $L$-classes differ although the constant coefficient and intersection cohomologies coincide.

Abstract:Let X X be a smooth projective variety over the complex numbers, and let D ⊂ X D\subset X be an ample divisor. For which spaces Y Y is the restriction map r : H o m ( X , Y ) → H o m ( D , Y ) \begin{equation*}r: \mathrm {Hom}(X, Y)\to \mathrm {Hom}(D, Y) \end{equation*} an isomorphism? Using positive characteristic methods, we give a fairly exhaustive answer to this question. An example application of our techniques is: if dim ⁡ ( X ) ≥ 3 \dim (X)\geq 3 , Y Y is smooth, Ω Y 1 \Omega ^1_Y is nef, and dim ⁡ ( Y ) > dim ⁡ ( D ) , \dim (Y)> \dim (D), the restriction map r r is an isomorphism. Taking Y Y to be the classifying space of a finite group B G BG , the moduli space of pointed curves M g , n \mathscr {M}_{g,n} , the moduli space of principally polarized Abelian varieties A g \mathscr {A}_g , certain period domains, and various other moduli spaces, one obtains many new and classical Lefschetz hyperplane theorems.

Abstract:This note presents some properties of the variety of planes $F_2(X)\subset G(3,7)$ of a cubic $5$-fold $X\subset \mathbb P^6$. A cotangent bundle exact sequence is first derived from the remark made by Iliev and Manivel that $F_2(X)$ sits as a Lagrangian subvariety of the variety of lines of a cubic $4$-fold, which is a hyperplane section of $X$. Using the sequence, the Gauss map of $F_2(X)$ is then proven to be an embedding. The last section is devoted to the relation between the variety of osculating planes of a cubic $4$-fold and the variety of planes of the associated cyclic cubic $5$-fold.

Abstract:Due to the orbifold singularities, the intersection numbers on the moduli space of curves $\bar{\sM}_{g,n}$ are in general rational numbers rather than integers. We study the properties of the denominators of these intersection numbers and their relationship with the orders of automorphism groups of stable curves. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber. We also present a conjectural multinomial type numerical property for Hodge integrals.

Abstract:We study properties of rational curves on complete intersections in positive characteristic. It has long been known that in characteristic 0, smooth Calabi–Yau and general type varieties are not uniruled. In positive characteristic, however, there are well-known counterexamples to this statement. We will show that nevertheless, a general Calabi–Yau or general type complete intersection in projective space is not uniruled. We will also show that the space of complete intersections of degree (d1,⋯,dk) containing a rational curve has codimension at least ∑i=1kdi−2n+2 and give similar results for hypersurfaces containing higher genus curves.

Abstract:A conjecture of J. Huh and B. Sturmfels predicts that the sign of the Euler characteristic of a complex very affine variety depends only on the parity of the dimension. The conjecture is true for locally complete intersections. Beyond this case, we construct counterexamples with arbitrarily bad failure.

Abstract:We establish the Noether inequality for projective 3-folds. More precisely, we prove that the inequality vol(X)≥43p_g(X)-103 holds for all projective 3-folds X of general type with either p_g(X)≤ 4 or p_g(X)≥ 21, where p_g(X) is the geometric genus and vol(X) is the canonical volume. This inequality is optimal due to known examples found by M. Kobayashi in 1992.

Abstract:We study genus 1 Gromov-Witten invariants of Fano complete intersections in the projective spaces. Among other things, we show a reconstruction theorem for genus 1 invariants with only ambient insertions, and compute the genus 1 invariants with 1 marked point. For cubic hypersurfaces of dimension $\neq 4$ and odd dimensional intersections of two quadrics, we obtain a complete reconstruction theorem for genus 1 Gromov-Witten invariants.

Abstract:Abstract Let be a projective klt pair, and a fibration to a smooth projective variety with strictly nef relative anti‐log canonical divisor . We prove that is a locally trivial fibration with rationally connected fibres, and the base is a canonically polarized hyperbolic manifold. In particular, when is a single point, we establish that is rationally connected. Moreover, when and is strictly nef, we prove that is ample, which confirms the singular version of a conjecture by Campana and Peternell for threefolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the Brill--Noether theory of a general smooth plane curve and a general curve $C$ on a Hirzebruch surface of fixed class. It is natural to study the line bundles on such curves according to the splitting type of their pushforward along projection maps $C \to \mathbb{P}^1$. Inspired by Wood's parameterization of ideal classes in rings associated to binary forms, we further refine the stratification of line bundles $L$ on $C$ by fixing the splitting types of both $L$ and $L(\Delta)$, where $\Delta \subset C$ is the intersection of $C$ with the directrix of the Hirzebruch surface. Our main theorem determines the dimensions of these locally closed strata and, if the characteristic of the ground field is zero, proves that they are smooth.

Abstract:We study smooth complex projective varieties X of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying (chi)(X, O-X) = 0. We prove that the Albanese variety of X has at least three simple factors. Examples were constructed by Ein and Lazarsfeld, and we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian etale covers) the only ones. By results of 'lien, another source of examples is provided by varieties X of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying h(0) (X, omega(X)) = 1. Examples were constructed by Chen and Hawn, and again, we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian etale covers) the only ones. We also formulate a conjecture on the general structure of these varieties in all dimensions.

Abstract:Two cycles on a projective variety over an algebraically closed field are shown to be rationally equivalent if and only if their difference equals a difference of complete intersections of a certain kind. Some of Bloch's conjectures for zero-cycles on surfaces can be restated more geometrically, which leads to several questions.

Abstract:We show that the family of 21-dimensional intermediate jacobians of cubic fivefolds containing a given cubic fourfold X is generically an algebraic integrable system. In the proof we apply an integrability criterion, introduced and used by Donagi and Markman to find a similar integrable system over the family of cubic threefolds in X. To enter in the conditions of this criterion, we write down explicitly the known by Beauville and Donagi symplectic structure on the family F(X) of lines on the general cubic fourfold X, and prove that the family of planes on a cubic fivefold containing X is embedded as a Lagrangian surface in F(X). By a symplectic reduction we deduce that our integrable system induces on the nodal boundary another integrable system, interpreted generically as the family of 20-dimensional intermediate jacobians of Fano threefolds of genus four contained in X. Along the way we prove an Abel-Jacobi type isomorphism for the Fano surface of conics in the general Fano threefold of genus 4, and compute the numerical invariants of this surface.
