Zhejiang Pattern:A Multifold Transitional Way of the Chinese Regional Economies

Abstract:From the perspective of multifold transformation,this paper checks the formation and main features of the so-called "Zhejiang pattern" by combining four aspects of the transition,i.e.,institutional transformation,industrialization,urbanization and regional opening up.It reveals that the "Zhejiang pattern" belongs to the mixture of four small regional patterns as an institutional transitional one,and the integration of the two small regional patterns as industrialization one.The urbanization of the provincial region features with the "effects of urban-biased migration of bosses",which is quite similar to that of England in 18th and early 19th century.The opening up of the regional economy followed the route from interregional to international.The author suggests that the fundamental elements driving the multifold transition of the region originated from the business sense of individuals in rural areas and the demand of industrial agglomeration.The above fundamental forces and the pro-reform atmosphere together created a "mechanism of reversal pressure" on the multi-layered governments,i.e.from township and county to provincial level,which endows the privatization as the core feature of the Zhejiang pattern in return.
