Abstract:This review paper covers several quality of service (QoS) models provided by Internet including IntServ, DiffServ and MPLS. It analyses the architecture and technological characteristics of each model. After an introduction of each model, this paper summarizes what QoS requests they can fulfill and how they implement these requests. It also describes the support of multicast in QoS models in brief. Based on these analytical studies, this paper proposes a total architecture of top-to-bottom, end-to-end QoS model, which takes full advantage of the virtues of the models described beforehand. This model has two prominent points: End-to-End QoS guarantee and flexible extensibility, which represent the trend for the future research of QoS.
Achieving Real-Time Quality of Service with Software Defined Networking

Abstract:In traditional networks, Quality of Service (QoS) has been a challenge due to the lack of global knowledge and a large amount of data to process at each device. This issue becomes much harder when we want to manage real-time QoS. As an innovative network paradigm, Software Defined Network (SDN) enables a centralized network control and a global view of network states. Meanwhile, the online algorithm can accommodate with unknown inputs in any coming sequence and provides a worst-case guarantee for the performances even compared with the off-line optimal result. In this paper, we utilize SDN and online algorithms to achieve real-time QoS in networks. By applying Primal-Dual techniques and the potential function method with phase partitions, we design two online algorithms that achieve real-time QoS and network load balancing at the same time with competitive ratios of log(D) and log(n) respectively (D is the network diameter and n is the node number). The simulations also support our theoretical analyses.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to implement the Active Network based Active Queue Management Technique for providing Quality of Service (QoS) using Network Processor(NP) based router to enhance multimedia applications. The performance is evaluated using Intel IXP2400 NP Simulator. The results demonstrate that, Active Network based Active Queue Management has better performance than RED algorithm in case of congestion and is well suited to achieve high speed packet classification to support multimedia applications with minimum delay and Queue loss. Using simulation, we show that the proposed system can provide assurance for prioritized flows with improved network utilization where bandwidth is shared among the flows according to the levels of priority. We first analyze the feasibility and optimality of the load distribution schemes and then present separate solutions for non-delay sensitive streams and delay-sensitive streams. Rigorous simulations and experiments have been carried out to evaluate the performance.

Abstract:After detailed analysis of four IP QoS protocols under develop (RSVP, DiffServ, MPLS and SBM), it is found that , although each protocol can support QoS service in network, none of then can be solutions to end-to-end QoS in large scale network all by itself, Only the utilization of all four procotols can realize deterministic transmission of user traffic flow in WAN. From this on, an integrated architecture for end-to-end IP QoS service is given.

Abstract:The complex applications of SoC make on-chip communication, which has different performance requirements and the interconnection, become the performance bottleneck. We design a network-on-chip router, which supports quality-of-service, providing guaranteed services and best-effort services in parallel. Our router adopts connection-oriented scheme to provide hard end-to-end delay guarantee in fine grained mode for guaranteed services, and adopts connectionless packet-switching mode to support best-effort services communication. It also implements a traffic-balanced adaptive routing algorithm to improve the average communication performance.
Bypassed channels based differentiated service implementation method for network-on-chip

Abstract:An efficient quality-of-service (QoS) method for network-on-chip was proposed to meet the low latency and low jitter transmission requirements of real-time applications in MPSoC (multiprocessing system-on-chip). The method utilizes pre-applying and dynamic scheduling mechanism to appropriately make use of bypass channels in routers. It allocates resources and handles conflicts sensibly according to communication tasks' requirements and priorities. Concretely, the mechanism for low latency transmission service uses flexible bypass and specific virtual channels to forward latency critical messages as soon as possible, while the mechanism for low jitter transmission service employes virtual channel reservation and adaptive routing algorithm to maintain successive transmission and low latency variation of jitter critical messages. Experimental results showed that the average delay of latency-critical messages was reduced by 41% and the average latency difference of burst data was reduced by 39%, compared to the conventional QoS method which only based on priority and specific virtual channel. Thus the proposed method can provide high-quality differentiated service for QoC applications.

Abstract:In order to deal with the increased delays and to balance the network load and the control performance, a Quality-of-Service (QoS) management framework with QoS standards for the pipeline-parallel network control system was presented. A scheduling strategy based on most vacancy time first (MVTF) was developed. As an example, a QoS management framework was built for a CAN bus control system with a comparison to the rate monotonic scheduling strategy. The simulation results show that the control performance and the network utilization of the parallel network control system are effectively improved by using the proposed QoS management.

Abstract:Network processor is a kind of programmable processor performing network computing with special design and optimization. It can be viewed as a tight-coupled multiprocessor system due to its architecture of multiple in-chip processors, high-speed buses and other function components. The design and development of networking systems using network processors is an emerging field that offers numerous challenges and opportunities. This paper provides the design and implementation of queue management module combining buffer management and packet scheduling for QoS provision, which uses Intel's network processor and follows the relative differentiated service model. As the key issues, system synchronization, task assignment to threads and design difficulties are discussed in the paper.

Abstract:IP QoS is the important bottleneck of Integrated Broad Band Network development but the active IP QoS architecture (such as IntServ, DiffServ, etc.) can't satisfy the users requirements commendably. So, our research would be a new explore about IP QoS architecture. Relying on currently network condition and next generation network development demand, we researched a sort of self-organizing IP QoS architecture based on adaptive edge control (QAAC) and presented its routing realization algorithms (called DSQR). This architecture can enhance network adaptive and scalable through the users's adaptive and self-organizing behaving. The simulation results show that QAAC and DSQR are effective and applied to provide preferable service. This will accommodate the next generation network development and application requirements much more.

Abstract:DiffServ architecture has been widely used in QoS applications due to its well extensibility. However, traditional network solution based on GPP and ASIC can't satisfy both performance and flexibility requirements. Abstract:All the new emerging QoS architectures are motivated by the desire to improve the overall performance of an IP network. While the integrated services (IntServ) architecture provides a means for the delivery of end-to-end QoS, it is not scalable or practical to operate and manage. Differentiated services (DiffServ) defines a model for implementing scalable differentiation of QoS in the Internet, but it has the drawback of providing no guarantees. Multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) is a fast label-based switching technique that offers new QoS capabilities for large scale IP networks. When an MPLS network supports DiffServ, traffic flows can receive class-based network treatment that provides bases for QoS guarantees, and these guarantees come with better scalability and reduced complexity in comparison with IntServ. We describe a service architecture model where part of the underlying technology used for IP transport is MPLS using DiffServ-like mechanisms and constraint based routing for traffic engineering.

Abstract:Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) for future many-core processor platforms integrate more and more heterogeneous components of different types and many real-time and latency-sensitive applications can run on a single chip concurrently. The reconfigurable FPGA and reconfigurable NoCs have emerged for the purpose of reusability. Those types' traffics within NoCs exhibit diverse, burst, and unpredictable communication patterns. QoS guaranteed mechanisms are necessary to provide guaranteed throughput (GT) or guaranteed bandwidth (GB) performance for NoCs. In this paper, we propose a QoS routing algorithm inspired by bees' foraging behaviors to provide guaranteed bandwidth performance. Virtual circuits and Spatial Division Multiplexing are employed to maintain available paths for different type's traffics.

Abstract:Quality of service should be maintained in the next generation network for real time communication and multimedia transmission. There is no unified quality of service scheme. The framework and routing scheme are the basis of such network and the performance of quality of service are mainly determined by the framework and routing scheme. In this paper, a novel network framework composed of general nodes layer and super nodes layer and routing scheme based on virtual circuit are presented to improve the effectiveness of quality of service. Simulation results have shown that the proposed framework is valid and the proposed routing scheme reduces the routing complexity achieved by traditional scheme by about 40%.

Abstract:Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is a promising future network architecture that shifts the host-based network paradigm to a content-oriented one. Over the past decade, numerous ICN congestion control (CC) schemes have been proposed, tailored to address congestion issues based on ICN’s transmission characteristics. However, several key challenges still need to be addressed. One critical issue is that most existing CC studies for ICN do not consider the diverse Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of modern network applications. This limitation hinders their applicability across various applications with different network performance preferences. Another ongoing challenge lies in improving transmission performance, particularly considering how to appropriately coordinate congestion control participants to enhance content retrieval efficiency and ensure reasonable resource allocation, especially in multipath scenarios. To tackle these challenges, we propose QSCCP, a QoS-aware congestion control protocol built upon NDN (Named Data Networking), a well-known ICN architecture. In QSCCP, diverse QoS preferences of various traffic are supported within a collaborative congestion control framework. A novel multi-level, class-based scheduling and forwarding mechanism is designed to ensure varied and fine-grained QoS guarantees. A distributed congestion notification and precise feedback mechanism is also provided, which efficiently collaborates with an adaptive multipath forwarding strategy and consumer rate adjustment to rationally allocate network resources and improve transmission efficiency, particularly in multipath scenarios. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that QSCCP satisfies diverse QoS requirements while achieving outstanding transmission performance. It outperforms existing schemes in throughput, fairness, delay, and packet loss, with a rapid convergence rate and excellent stability.

Abstract:QoS (Quality-of-Service) control will be one of the most important mechanisms in the next-generation Internet, where QoS routing (QoSR) is a promising solution. We propose a multi-constrained intradomain QoS routing protocol SQOSPF. The advantages of this protocol include easy implementation, multi-constrained QoS support, high-speed convergence and multiple QoSR algorithms support. Stochastic Petri Net is employed to model SQOSPF and analyze impacts of update threshold and routing holding time upon the load of networks and routers. Extensive simulations show that choosing appropriate update threshold and routing holding time can excessively reduce the extra load and keep routing performance at the same time.
