Abstract:Most presented textbooks of introduction to Dongxiao(traditional Chinese vertical flute) playing, usually describe the diapason range of Dongxiao as d1-# f3.In this paper,we provide the hole-fingering patterns with a expended range of d1-d4.From the archeological data and historic records,it reveals that Dongxiao is an aboriginal music instrument. And with analysis on historic records,it hypothesized that in ancient China people might play Dongxiao with wider diapason range than that of the most contemporary textbook of Dongxiao. With the characteristics in history, such as folklore music, acoustic aesthetics, cultural symbolic significance, religion and literature,Dongxiao might be a typical symbol to Chinese ancient and folklore music culture with significant cultural identity. With view of development and succeeding of traditional music and cross-cultural exchange, the development of hole-fingering in playing high diapason range of overtone of Dongxiao provides a large space for the development of Dongxiao culture, while the transformation and the related innovation of the structure of the appearances of Dongxiao could cause the decrease of image authenticity of Dongxiao. So it is profitable to conserve the traditional model of the six-hole Dongxiao for the authenticity and cultural identity of Dongxiao culture.
