Abstract:Biomarker records from Mochou Lake sediments,Larsemann Hills(69°22.3′S,76°22.0′E),East Antarctica, were used to identify mid-late Holocene climate history in the region.Long chain alkenones(LCAs) were recorded from base to 76 cm of a sediment core(6 500—5 100 cal.a BP),and were used as biomarkers for a limited number of certain haptophytes. This record represents a period of high relative sea level.Trace amounts of LCAs also were found at 36—30 cm(3 700—3 500 cal.a BP),which reflected changes in lake salinity caused by a cold climate with minimal ice melt water and relatively high evaporation. The absence of LCAs above 76 cm(about 5 100 cal.a BP) was consistent with the climate switching from cold to warm and a gradual drop in relative sea level. This decrease in sea level resulted in more glacial melt water and less intrusion of seawater. The evolution of n-alkanes(C19-C33) reflected the same history of a hygrophyte population.
