Abstract:The construction of "Emerging Engineering Education" aims at cultivating high-quality graduates capable of engineering practice, innovation and international competitiveness. Bilingual courses have become one of the effective means to cultivate qualified students with skills of both professional knowledge and international communication. However, the teaching effect of most bilingual courses is not very ideal. Based on analyzing common problems in the current bilingual teaching, we take the bilingual course of environmental biotechnology as an example, and discusses possible improvement strategies from the aspects of the construction of teaching mode, the establishment of quality control system, the selection of textbooks and the optimization of assessment methods. Moreover, we summarize experience and shortcomings on improving the lecturers' ability, students' learning enthusiasm and school's support. It is expected to provide useful reference for improving the effect of bilingual teaching in biotechnology-relevant courses.

Abstract:This research analyzes the Civil Engineering department students' needs for English learning materials and the need regarding the language element by students in English learning material in the civil engineering department. Populations in this research were carried out in the Department of Civil Engineering, at the University of Bengkulu. This research used descriptive quantitative research with questionnaire as the tools in collecting data and interview was carried out to find out in-depth and strengthen the questionnaire. To analyze the data, the writer involved two steps in analyzing the data collected; Give questionnaires to civil students using Google Form and then they were given 2 days to fill out and Analyze and explain the results of the list of answers from the questionnaire. The result of this research showed that the civil engineer students want to improve their English speaking skills and listening skills to communicate in their activities in the field of civil engineering where the material provided is easily understood by the students. In addition, the language element they want is more conversational. The English conversations given are more situational conversations and the texts given are more discussion texts. The last, English is important for professional needs because English is needed for everything such as the TOEFL score and confidence in their English which is one of the requirements to continue studying and to become an employee in a company.

Abstract:As an increasing demand for international technique communications, a new class of engineering materials teaching in English was registered since 2012 fall semester at Tsinghua university. According to the course requirement and the advantages of potential teaching in English, we helped students developing abilities in logical thinking and positive problem solving throughout the course study. By introducing comprehensive assignments and active study techniques, the training for innovational talents was practiced.

Abstract:This study aims to examine the process of developing interdisciplinary lesson plans for prospective English and social studies teachers using the Content-based language instruction model (CLIL) and through collaborative work. The participants of the study consisted of 30 prospective English and 10 prospective social studies teachers who were continuing their pre-service university education in one of the western provinces of Turkey. A qualitative approach was used to answer the research problem, and data collection tools consisted of questionnaires, semi-structured group interviews, and lesson plans. Both descriptive and content analysis was used to reach inferential results. As a result of the research, it was understood that pre-service teachers’ own learning experiences affect their beliefs about their teaching experiences. Besides, it was understood that the 4C model, which can be used in CLIL, is specifically suitable for social studies. In line with these results, suggestions were made for future studies.

The study aims to help develop students' practical ability and creative thinking as a core goal. The proposed civil engineering material course teaching reform ideas were applied in teaching practice at Ningbo Institute of Technology in Zhejiang University, and the obvious effects were summarized.

Abstract:While English has been used as a Lingua Franca (LF) for many years all around the world, Türkiye on the other hand, which has been experiencing mass migration to its lands and started the internationalization process, teaching Turkish to foreigners as a second or foreign language has attracted attention. As a result of the attention given to Turkish language, the institutions in Türkiye initiated several projects to design language materials according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) criteria while materials were adapted for English language years ago. Since one of the materials used during teaching is textbooks, the aim of this study is to examine and compare the organization of the books and spoken interaction activities of one A1-level English coursebook published for those who learn English as a foreign language and one A1-level Turkish coursebook published for those who learn Turkish as a foreign language using CEFR criteria. For this reason, two books written in both languages were selected by getting expert opinion and their units were analyzed with the document analysis method. When the results are examined, it is found out that there are several differences between the organization of the units and layout of the books. Moreover, there are more spoken interaction activities in English coursebook than the Turkish coursebook.

Abstract:"Soil Mechanics" is a degree course in Zhejiang University City College of Civil Engineering. The teaching group of this course has thought and practiced the reforms in teacher-student interaction, attendance innovation, materials selection, layout of the homework and the form of practice teaching. Simplifying the derivation of calculation formulas and strengthening the experiment and practice which can develop the students' manipulative ability and innovative spirit. Interacting with students which can make them learn more about the teacher and this course. At the same time, teachers can understand better about the students' thinking, then adapt and improve each other. The reform of teaching material selection and arrangement of work which make students have more examples to refer. The free choice in after-school subject which allow students to sum up the knowledge points and that would enable the consolidation of classroom teaching. At the same time, by consulting reference books, students will find the knowledge points which the teacher did not emphasized.

Abstract:According to analysis of Chemical Engineering English, the problems of teaching materials and methods in Subject-Based English were listed in this paper. For improvement, five aspects has been proposed both to recognize the importance of the course and to solve the problems by laying emphasis on construction and optimization of teaching materials, strengthening the team of teachers, reforming teaching mode and updating examination model. Furthermore, it was also put forward that bilingual courses can not replace Subject-Based English.

Abstract:The main objective of the study is to investigate the effect of inquiry-based learning in the frame of interdisciplinary teaching and learning on English class and the impact that it creates on the IB MYP Emergent and Capable Level students (Grade 5, 6, 7 and 8) in the selected IB continuum school, applying the IB MYP curriculum, in Turkey. Three levels of language proficiency are provided for language classes in IB MYP. The planning is established on the effective choice of a suitable level between Emergent, Capable, and Proficient levels. The set of objectives and each level’s needs are used to determine the expectations and set goals for the learners. The study was conducted by using a mixed approach which uses data collected from194 middle school students and 8 IB MYP teachers. Each student completed the questionnaire on Inquiry-based Learning. There are 7 Focus Groups; 5 Focus Groups with a random sampling of middle school students and 2 Focus Groups of related subject area teachers. In line with the purpose of study, the selection of subject-area teachers is limited to English, Maths, and Science which use English as the language of instruction in the selected IB school. The data collected from each participant is analyzed with the help of SPSS 22. Under the light of this study, the answer to the question “How does inquiry-based learning affect the language learning process in the IB MYP Emergent and the IB MYP Capable levels?” is provided. The study is designed to be a comparative case study that focuses on the similarities and differences across the two IB MYP levels; Emergent and Capable and how they connect in terms of inquiry-based learning and language acquisition.It is understood that a student who can benefit from the interdisciplinary learning experience is enriched in terms of the experience of making connections to the real world and showing appreciation of inquiry based learning.

Abstract:Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) may be seen as a type of instruction where students can study foreign languages and specialized material concurrently, depending on the subject matter. By striking a balance between professional education and the acquisition of foreign language abilities, CLIL greatly enhances students' motivation, responsibility, and personal growth. CLIL is a type of bilingual education where students study foreign languages and subject material at the same time. Through teaching trials, the efficacy of the CLIL technique as an academic subject for second-year mechanical engineering students was examined in this study. Mechanical engineering second semester students are taken into consideration. Subject and English professors provided ideas for the "definitions" for the elements utilized in the Engineering Practice Lab, which were taken from the Professional English curriculum. Only mechanical engineering students taking English as a supplement are the topic of this study. The main research approach is educational experiments; alternative research methods include survey questionnaires that are used as pre- and post-tests at the start and finish of the study. Based on the survey questionnaire responses, a statistical assessment of the students' syntactic proficiency was conducted. The study's findings demonstrate students' interest in developing their definition-building abilities with favorable opinions on CLIL.

Abstract:Thanks to technological advances, migration, and globalization, English has become the language of internationalization. Therefore, many schools prioritized learning English to ensure and sustain international communication. However, in order to communicate well with individuals all around the world, bestowing English language learners with intercultural competence is also required in the teaching and learning of English. In Türkiye, one of the countries that host many immigrants, the experiences of foreign language teachers regarding intercultural issues might provide many insights into intercultural language learning and teaching. Therefore, this study aimed to expose EFL state schoolteachers’ perceptions and practices regarding intercultural language teaching and having foreign students in their classrooms. The methods that teachers adopted to promote intercultural competence in their classes were also explored. The semi-structured interviews were carried out with 30 English language teachers in middle and high schools in Türkiye. For data analysis, the computer program MAXQDA was benefited to categorize the codes and reveal the common themes. The findings revealed certain teacher practices that might contribute to students’ intercultural competence development and challenges experienced during that process. It can be concluded that teachers are in need of professional guidance and resources to further develop their learners’ intercultural competence.
Effects of Bilingualism on Students' Linguistic Education: Specifics of Teaching Phonetics and Lexicology

Abstract:In the study of English in a bylingual environment, issues related to the need to develop students' phonetic and lexical competencies, which include communication, phonetic and auditory skills and lexical sufficiency, are of particular relevance. The motive of this study is the need to improve the methodology of teaching English in the context of student immersion in a foreign language educational environment, by implementing additional thematic courses in the general educational program aimed at improving the phonetic and lexical competencies necessary for successful learning in a bilingual environment. The purpose of the article is to study the feasibility and effectiveness of studying phonetics and lexicology by students-translators who study in a bilingual educational environment. An educational experiment was conducted with the participation of 75 students-translators, in the educational process of which the disciplines of phonetics and lexicology were integrated for two academic hours per week for one year. The effectiveness of studying phonetics and lexicology within the framework of bilingual education has been proved and the skills and achievements of students that they have acquired in the process of bilingual education with an emphasis on phonetics and lexicology have been analyzed. Control tests yielded the following results: among the 46 Russian-speaking participants the percentage of English speakers at the C2 level was 7% (3 people), C1-79% (36 people), B2-14% (7 people). To achieve the most effective learning in a bilingual environment, especially when it takes place in a minority language, it is worth emphasizing students' learning of phonetics and vocabulary. Using this approach, students were able to form and develop a number of phonetic and lexical skills and improve academic performance.

Abstract:At present, the interaction between different areas of knowledge is becoming an integral part of our life, which has resulted in the research interest in interdisciplinarity in the system of higher professional education. The interdisciplinary approach to teaching foreign languages in higher education makes it possible to combine knowledge and skills from various fields to solve complex problems that students will face in their future professional environment. The next factor that determines the relevance of the problem under study is the specific character of the “Foreign Language” discipline. Professionally oriented foreign language instruction involves close interaction between the participants of the educational process beyond linguistic aspects. The study represents a theoretical stage and considers the problem of creating an integrative foreign language learning environment at NR Moscow State University of Civil Engineering. An analysis of domestic and foreign pedagogical and methodological literature on the research topic has been carried out through theoretical (analysis of methodological literature, synthesis, generalization) and practical (questioning of students and teachers) methods. Identifying interdisciplinary connections is considered a necessary condition for creating an integrative foreign language learning environment. Domestic and foreign studies of the teachers and methodologists demonstrate the depth and sufficient elaboration of specific issues of the interdisciplinary approach. However, practical teaching experience shows that some theoretical aspects do not correspond to the real educational environment. This imbalance is based on the conditions that are considered in the study. Based on the analysis, recommendations for successful implementation of the interdisciplinary approach to professionally oriented language instruction at the civil engineering university have been developed: integration of educational materials on construction; project-based learning, cross-cultural learning; use of interactive technologies; cooperation with the teachers of engineering disciplines; educational and methodological seminars for teachers.

Abstract:Based on the higher requirements of “the Belt and the Road” development strategy for engineers, combined with the development prospects of internationalization of bridge engineering, the teaching process of the bilingual course “Bridge Engineering” is reformed. Taking language as the medium, and professional knowledge as the main line, the basic knowledge fragments are comprehensively sorted out. By comparing the differences between Chinese and foreign projects, integrating aesthetics and cultural education, students’ “global view” and “future view” are cultivated, and students’ enthusiasm for exploration in professional fields is inspired to meet the requirements for engineers under the development strategy of “the Belt and the Road.”
