Abstract:Self-assembled nanometer-sized stripes are obtained spontaneously by electrostatic adsorption of bolaform amphiphiles bearing hydrophilic :pyridinium headgroups and rigid hydrophobic azobenzene onto mica sheets. The ordered stripes have a repeat spacing of 10 nm, and the ordered region can extend over: macroscopic areas. The formation of such nanostructures mainly depends on the concentration of the bolaform amphiphiles. The template effect of the mica sheet also plays a crucial role in the molecular organization at the Liquid solid interface. The degree of order of the stripes is influenced by adding electrolyte into the aqueous solution or upon irradiating the solution for physical adsorption under UV light.

Abstract:Self-assembled 3D flower-like hierarchical spheres composed of small nanosheets and nanobelts of manganese oxide were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method at 125°C and 200°C, respectively in aqueous solution, without the assistance of any templates and SDAs. A mechanism involving two competitive factors, temperature and Coulomb interaction, was proposed to understand their formation. Morphology control of the product can be easily achieved by adjusting the reaction temperature according to this mechanism, which was supported by other parallel experiments. The product was characterized by XRD, TEM, FESEM and BET surface area analysis was also carried out.

Abstract:We have employed a dynamic covalent bond to fabricate a bolaform superamphiphile, which can be used as building blocks for controlled assembly and disassembly. In alkaline environment, one building block bearing a benzoic aldehyde group can react with the other building block bearing an amino group to form a bolaform superamphiphile. It is found that the bolaform superamphiphiles can self-assemble in water to form micellar aggregates. When the pH is tuned down to slightly acidic values, the benzoic imine bond can be hydrolyzed, leading to the dissociation of the superamphiphile. The micellar aggregates will also disassemble, and the loaded guest molecules are released subsequently. This line of research has enriched the family of bolaform amphiphiles, and the resulting assemblies may find application in the field of controlled and targetable drug-delivery in a biological environment.
Modeling the Self-Assembly of Bolaamphiphiles under Nanoconfinement by Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamics.

Abstract:Novel and complex nanostructures of amphiphiles assemblies facilitate realizing of many practical applications in nanotechnologies. Under different physical conditions, amphiphiles can form various morphologies. In this article, the self-assembly of bolaamphiphiles was investigated under the cylindrical confinement of carbon nanotubes by coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation. We found that bolaamphiphiles inside a carbon nanotube with a relatively large diameter tended to self-assemble into curved cylindrical micelles, and further some of these micelles can form double helix structures which were not observed in bulk solutions. We develop an effective method to characterize different morphologies. Our analysis results showed that the formation of double helix and other amorphous morphologies of micelles in carbon nanotubes is not induced by the conformational variation of bolaamphiphiles. Moreover, through examining the potential energies of different structures, we infer that it is entropy which leads micelles to bend even to form double stranded helix structures. In addition, we analyzed the sizes of micelles and find the scission and recombination of micelles during the double helix formation process. This work indicates that the confinement of carbon nanotube is an available method to produce complex nanostructures and provides some new insights of the self-assembly of bolaamphiphiles.

Abstract:It is hard to obtain spatially ordered nanostructures via the polyion complexation process due to the inherent flexibility of polymers and isotropicity of ionic interactions. Here we report the formation of polyion assemblies with well-defined, periodically regular internal structure by imparting the proper stiffness to the molecular tile. A stiff bisligand TPE-C4-L2 was designed which is able to form a negatively charged supramolecular polyelectrolyte with transition metal ions. This supramolecular polyelectrolyte slowly self-assembled into polydispersed flat sheets with cocoon-like patterns. Upon the addition of an oppositely charged Ordinary polyelectrolyte, the polydispersed cocoons immediately transformed into ultralong, uniform nanoladders as a result of matched ionic density recognition. The supramolecular polyelectrolytes assembled side-by-side, and the negative charges aligned in an array. This structure forced the positively charged polymers to lie along the negative charges so that the perpendicular arrangement of the oppositely charged chains was achieved. Such precise charge recognition will provide insight into the design of advanced materials with hierarchical self-assembled structures.

Abstract:In this paper, in situ atomic force microscopy has been used to investigate the micellization and self-assembling structure of an amphiphilic rod–coil block oligomer (EO16OPV) containing a conjugated oligo(phenylene vinylene) dimer and poly(ethylene oxide) at the mica–water interface. It is found that EO16OPV molecules have strong adsorption and aggregation properties on mica. In the wide concentration range from above the critical micelle concentration (cmc) to far below the cmc, a closely packed layer of stripe-like micelles with two preferred orientations can be formed at the mica–water interface. A cylindrical micelle structure for the stripes is proposed. We demonstrate that the stripe-like micelles formed on mica originate from different micellization processes at solution concentrations above and below the cmc. The origins of the strong micellization properties and oriented arrangement of the stripes are also discussed.

Abstract:We describe the synthesis and characterization of the mesogen-bearing bolaform amphiphile 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenylbis(11-pyridinium-N-yl-undecanoic ester) dibromide (BP-10) and its solid/liquid interfacial self-assembly. Cylindrical micelles are directly observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) at the interface between mica and the aqueous solution above the critical micelle concentration (cmc). In situ and ex situ AFM studies indicate that the cylindrical micelles are stable both at the mica/solution interface and in the dry state. The enhanced stability of the micellar structures enables a detailed investigation of their self-assembly behavior and supramolecular structures at the interface. The adsorption model proposed here is supported by the variation of the interfacial self-assemblies on changing the solution concentration and substrate temperature.

Abstract:Self-assembly of small molecules into highly ordered nanostructures offers many important potential applications in science research and industry. Precise self-assembling with the assistance of inorganic substrate is considered as an ideal strategy. In this experiment, the highly ordered mica surface was used to template the assembling of a novel designed amphiphilic hexapeptide to form orderly parallel fibers. The nanostructure and the self-assembly mechanism were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and circular dichroism techniques. By the experimental results, a dramatic conformation transition from random coil and/or α-helix into β-sheet was found after the peptide assembled on the mica surface under certain conditions, which was considered as a key factor for the ordered nanostructure. Finally, according to the AFM images and the simulated length of peptide molecules, a trilaminar β-sheet structure model was proposed to explain the hierarchical self-assembly mechanism.

Abstract:Self-assembly of cationic bolaamphiphiles is usually reported to form one-dimensional (1D) or zerodimensional (0D), rather than two-dimensional (2D) structures. Here we have found a facile counteriondirected structure switch for such amphiphilic moieties. 0D/1D structures formed by self-assembly of cationic bolaamphiphiles can be converted into 2D planar structures by a simple counterion change to tosylate. As indicated by the single crystal structure and variable-temperature NMR studies, the strong binding between tosylate counterions and cationic headgroups drives the formation of 2D planar structures. It is highly anticipated that this approach may present as a simple methodology to control the stacking of the embedded conjugated cores in bolaamphiphiles, therefore modulating optoelectronic properties and function in such assemblies.

Abstract:We report herein the self-organization of the polymerizable bolaamphiphile (noted, L-Asp-DA) that contains a diacetylene group and two L-aspartic groups. We found that L-Asp-DA can self-organize into stable fiberlike nanostructures at the mica-water interface. The micellar nanostructures of L-Asp-DA can be polymerized both in the bulk solution and in the film on UV irradiation, and the nanostructures of the L-Asp-DA micelles at the mica-water interface can be maintained after polymerization. The polymerized L-Asp-DA nanostructures can go through blue-red transition upon pH stimuli arising from the transformation of polydiacetylene skeleton. In addition, the concentration (above cmc) of L-Asp-DA has a great effect on the nanostructures. At a concentration of 3.2x10(-4) mol/L, L-Asp-DA can self-organize into stable fiberlike nanostructure at the mica-water interface, while cylindrical nanostructures self-organize at a concentration of 6.0x10(-4) mol/L. This work may provide a new approach for designing and fabricating molecular assemblies with controlled sizes and shapes, leading to the development of novel functional polymer nanostructure materials.

Abstract:Poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate) (POEGMA) block poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes were synthesized on the silicon wafer surfaces by the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. Atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry, and water contact angle methods were employed to study the surface morphology and stimulus-response behavior. It was found that simple solvent treatments could induce phase segregation of the POEGMA and PMMA segments thus introducing nanoscale patterns. The feature size could be less than 10 nm and was tunable on the nanoscale. Various patterns including spherical aggregates, wormlike aggregates, stripe patterns, perforated layers, and complete overlayers were obtained through adjusting the upper block layer thickness. These patterns could switch between the different morphologies reversibly after the treatment with selective solvents.

Abstract:A bolaform amphiphile(BP-15) bearing biphenyl group and long spacers of alkyl chains was synthesized. In-situ AFM studies indicate that the amphiphile can form two kinds of surface aggregates with different morphologies depending on solution concentration: short-range ordered cylindrical surface micelles at the lower concentration and flat domains at the higher concentration. These results agree well with the two critical micelle concentrations in bulk solution as determined by the concentration-dependent conductivity.

Abstract:Nanopatterns with a sub-5 nm line width are of great interest due to their potential applications in nanotechnology. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of three-component bolaform giant surfactants that can assemble into three-phase-four-layer lamellar (LAM3) structures with sub-5 nm feature sizes. These samples consist of central linear polystyrene (PS) chains with oligodimethylsiloxane-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (SiPOSS) at one end and perfluoroalkyl-functionalized POSS (FPOSS) at the other end. Phase separation occurs among three mutually incompatible components, leading to LAM3 structures with relatively sharp interfaces and d-spacings of 12–19 nm. While the lamellar periodicity can be facilely tuned by changing the chain length of PS, the pitch widths of the POSS domains remain largely constant. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) were used to analyze the elemental distribution of the LAM3 structures. After oxygen plasma treatment, the morphology converts into a hierarchical lamellar structure with extremely small Si-rich layers (∼2 nm in thickness). This work suggests that these bolaform giant surfactants are versatile counterparts of traditional triblock copolymers capable of undergoing rapid and strong phase separation at relatively low molecular weights toward unconventional nanostructures with small feature sizes.

Abstract:The role of hydrotropic counteranions in governing the self-assembled structures of cationic bolaamphiphiles is studied in this work. We reveal that the ability of a hydrotropic counteranion to induce the formation of two-dimensional (2D) planar aggregates depends weakly on its polar head, but is strongly correlated to the size and substitution pattern of its organic portion. Additionally, the shape of the obtained 2D planar aggregates can be modulated, interestingly, by both hydrotropic counteranions and embedded conjugated moieties. 2D planar aggregates with triangular, quadrangular, and hexagonal shapes are obtained, and therefore this study may provide a simple and feasible methodology for fabricating organic self-assembled structures with controlled features.

Abstract:This article discusses the relationship between the molecular structure of bolaamphiphiles bearing mesogenic groups and their interfacial self-organized morphology. On the basis of the molecular structures of bolaamphiphiles, we designed and synthesized a series of molecules with different hydrophobic alkyl chain lengths, hydrophilic headgroups, mesogenic groups, and connectors between the alkyl chains and the mesogenic group. Through investigating their inter-facial self-organization behavior, some experiential rules are summarized: (1) An appropriate alkyl chain length is necessary to form stable surface micelles; (2) different categories of headgroups have a great effect on the interfacial self-organized morphology; (3) different types of mesogenic groups have little effect on the structure of the interfacial assembly when it is changed from biphenyl to azobenzene or stilbene; (4) the orientation of the ester linker between the mesogenic group and alkyl chain can greatly influence the interfacial self-organization behavior. It is anticipated that this line of research may be helpful for the molecular engineering of bolaamphiphiles to form tailor-made morphologies.

Abstract:We have synthesized an amphiphilic dumbbell-shaped molecule consisting of dodeca-p-phenylene and aliphatic polyether dendrons as flexible end groups. The molecular dumbbell in aqueous solution self-assembles into well-defined left-handed helical cylinders with a diameter (8 nm) of a molecular length scale and a pitch length of 5.6 nm, as confirmed by TEM. These elementary helical fibrils are further assembled to give left-handed superhelical fibers with lengths up to several micrometers. Such a well-defined helical arrangement of conjugated rod building blocks may provide a new strategy for the design of one-dimensional nanostructured materials with biomimetic, electronic, and photonic functions.
