Abstract:In this paper, we establish a small time large deviation principle and obtain the following small time asymptotics:lim(t-->0) 2t log P(X-0 is an element of B, X-t is an element of C) = -d(2)(B, C),for diffusion processes on Hilbert spaces, where d(B, C) is the intrinsic metric between two subsets B and C associated with the diffusions. The case of perturbed Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes is treated separately at the end of the paper.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the large deviation principle of the stochastic reaction-diffusion lattice systems defined on the N-dimensional integer set, where the nonlinear drift term is locally Lipschitz continuous with polynomial growth of any degree and the nonlinear diffusion term is locally Lipschitz continuous with linear growth. We first prove the convergence of the solutions of the controlled stochastic lattice systems, and then establish the large deviations by the weak convergence method based on the equivalence of the large deviation principle and the Laplace principle.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider stochastic reaction–diffusion equations with superlinear drift on the real line driven by space–time white noise. A Freidlin–Wentzell large deviation principle is established by a modified weak convergence method on the space , where . Obtaining the main result in this paper is challenging due to the setting of unbounded domain, the space–time white noise, and the superlinear drift term without dissipation. To overcome these difficulties, the specially designed family of norms on the Fréchet space , one-order moment estimates of the stochastic convolution, and two nonlinear Gronwall-type inequalities play an important role.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the large deviation principle of invariant measures of stochastic reaction-diffusion lattice systems driven by multiplicative noise. We first show that any limit of a sequence of invariant measures of the stochastic system must be an invariant measure of the deterministic limiting system as noise intensity approaches zero. We then prove the uniform Freidlin-Wentzell large deviations of solution paths over all initial data and the uniform Dembo-Zeitouni large deviations of solution paths over a compact set of initial data. We finally establish the large deviations of invariant measures by combining the idea of tail-ends estimates and the argument of weighted spaces.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the stochastic reaction-diffusion lattice systems defined on the entire set with both locally Lipschitz nonlinear drift and diffusion terms. The central limit theorem is derived for such infinite-dimensional stochastic systems. Moreover, the moderate deviation principle of solution processes is also established by the weak convergence method based on the variational representation of positive functionals of Brownian motion. The method relies on proving the convergence of the solutions of the controlled stochastic lattice systems.

Abstract:We study the large deviation estimates for the short time asymptotic behavior of a strongly degenerate diffusion process. Assuming a nilpotent structure of the Lie algebra generated by the driving vector fields, we obtain a graded large deviation principle and prove the existence of those "very rare events". In particular the first grade coincides with the classical Large Deviation Principle.

Abstract:We consider a two-dimensional Hamiltonian system perturbed by a small diffusion term, whose coefficient is state-dependent and non-degenerate. As a result, the process consists of the fast motion along the level curves and slow motion across them. On finite time intervals, the large deviation principle applies, while on time scales that are inversely proportional to the size of the perturbation, the averaging principle holds, i.e., the projection of the process onto the Reeb graph converges to a Markov process. In our paper, we consider the intermediate time scales and prove the large deviation principle, with the action functional determined in terms of the averaged process on the graph.

Abstract:Behind the nice unification provided by the notion of the level 2.5 in the field of large deviations for time-averages over a long Markov trajectory, there are nevertheless very important qualitative differences between the meaning of the level 2.5 for diffusion processes on one hand, and the meaning of the level 2.5 for Markov chains either in discrete-time or in continuous-time on the other hand. In order to analyze these differences in detail, it is thus useful to consider two types of random walks converging towards a given diffusion process in dimension d involving arbitrary space-dependent forces and diffusion coefficients, namely (i) continuous-time random walks on the regular lattice of spacing b; (ii) discrete-time random walks in continuous space with a small time-step τ. One can then analyze how the large deviations at level 2.5 for these two types of random walks behave in the limits b → 0 and τ → 0 respectively, in order to describe how the fluctuations of some empirical observables of the random walks are suppressed in the limit of diffusion processes. One can then also study the limits b → 0 and τ → 0 for any trajectory observable of the random walks that can be decomposed on its empirical density and its empirical flows in order to see how it is projected on the appropriate trajectory observable of the diffusion process involving its empirical density and its empirical current.

Large Deviations for Small Noise Diffusions Over Long Time

Abstract:We study two problems. First, we consider the large deviation behavior of empirical measures of certain diffusion processes as, simultaneously, the time horizon becomes large and noise becomes vanishingly small. The law of large numbers (LLN) of the empirical measure in this asymptotic regime is given by the unique equilibrium of the noiseless dynamics. Due to degeneracy of the noise in the limit, the methods of Donsker and Varadhan (1976) are not directly applicable and new ideas are needed. Second, we study a system of slow-fast diffusions where both the slow and the fast components have vanishing noise on their natural time scales. This time the LLN is governed by a degenerate averaging principle in which local equilibria of the noiseless system obtained from the fast dynamics describe the asymptotic evolution of the slow component. We establish a large deviation principle that describes probabilities of divergence from this behavior. On the one hand our methods require stronger assumptions than the nondegenerate settings, while on the other hand the rate functions take simple and explicit forms that have striking differences from their nondegenerate counterparts.

Abstract:We obtain sample-path large deviations for a class of one-dimensional stochastic differential equations with bounded drifts and heavy-tailed Lévy processes. These heavy-tailed Lévy processes do not satisfy the exponential integrability condition, which is a common restriction on the Lévy processes in existing large deviations contents. We further prove that the solution processes satisfy a weak large deviation principle with a discrete rate function and logarithmic speed. We also show that they do not satisfy the full large deviation principle.

Abstract:The Freidlin–Wentzell's large deviation principle is established for a class of multi-scale stochastic models involving slow–fast components, where the slow component has general monotone drift and the fast component has dissipative drift driven by multiplicative noise. Our result is applicable to various slow–fast stochastic dynamical systems such as stochastic porous media equations, stochastic p -Laplace equations and stochastic reaction–diffusion equations. The weak convergence method and the technique of time discretization are used to establish the Laplace principle (equivalently, large deviation principle) under the multi-scale framework.

Stochastic Processes and their Applications

Abstract:We use the continuity theorem of Lyons for rough paths in the p-variation topology to produce an elementary approach to the large deviation principle and the support theorem for diffusion processes. The proofs reduce to establish the corresponding results for Brownian motion itself as a rough path in the p-variation topology, 2 < p < 3, and the technical step is to handle the Levy area in this respect. Abstract:In this paper we study process-level large deviations for spin-flip particle systems and more general Markov processes. We prove that a modification of a well known Donsker-Varadhan entropy function can be used to govern the large deviation lower bounds for any such process starting from a class of initial distributions related to an extremal invariant measure of the process. In some specific cases, we obtain the full large deviation principle.
