Abstract:Objective Spinal massotherapy is one of the therapeutic methods of traditional Chinese medicine.The regulative effect of cervical spine massotherapy on the function of autonomic nervous system was investigated according to the traditional Chinese medical theory of the correlativity between viscera and channels.Methods Healthy adult male volunteers were selected and treated by cervical massotherapy including a press of bilateral cervical transverse processes,right and left rotation and a pulling method.Heart rate and heart rate variability were selected as the indices.A change in the tonicity of autonomic nervous system was observed after massotherapy.Results The results observed in 30 normal adult male volunteers showed that heart rate significantly decreased(R-R interval lengthened),SDNN in a time domain analysis significantly increased and the total power spectrum in a frequency domain analysis significantly increased after massotherapy.All the above results suggested that the vagotony increased.Conclusion Cervical spine massotherapy can regulate the tonicity of autonomic nervous system,suggesting the possibility that acupuncture-moxibustion and massotherapy are clinically used to treat cardiovascular diseases,eg arrhythmia.

Abstract:Objectives: The present study is aimed at evaluating the effects of manual acupuncture with different durations on the human brain using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Materials and methods: Eighteen healthy right-handed volunteers were divided into three groups randomly. Each group received only one kind of acupuncture on the right LI4 (Hegu) point, which lasted 30 sec, 60 sec, or 180 sec, respectively. Fix-effect and conjunction analysis were used to compare the effects of the three kinds of acupunctures. Results: The results indicated that the stimulation of manual acupuncture with different durations could induce different effects in the central nervous system on the human brain. The longer duration of manual acupuncture might induce more significant areas. Conclusions: The present study provided not only neuroimaging evidence for manual acupuncture, but also a useful guide for clinical applications of acupuncture. In addition, the results might be helpful to understand the relationship between the central nervous system responses and the durations of acupuncture.
Effect of Seated Cervical Spinal Manipulation on Autonomic Nervous System Activity as Measured by Heart Rate Variability and Plasma Norepinephrine Levels: A randomized Pre- and Poststudy

Abstract:Objective The objective of this study was to determine whether seated cervical manipulation produced changes in autonomic nervous system activity, as measured by heart rate variability and plasma norepinephrine levels. Methods Ninety-five healthy young adults (ages 20-48 years) were recruited into a single-blinded physiological study, with 47 randomized to a seated cervical manipulation and 44 randomized to a sham procedure. Heart rate variability in the frequency domain, and plasma norepinephrine levels were measured prior to, immediately following, and 5 minutes following the intervention. Results Electrocardiograms were obtained from 39 subjects in the sham group and 43 subjects in the manipulation group. No statistically significant changes were found in measures of heart rate variability in the frequency domain in either the manipulation or sham groups. Blood samples were obtained from 22 subjects in the sham group and 27 subjects in the manipulation group. Plasma norepinephrine levels, as measured by spectrophotometry, declined in both groups from pre- to immediately postintervention, and they remained at decreased levels 5 minutes after the interventions. There were no statistically significant differences between groups in pre- or postintervention norepinephrine levels. Conclusions Measures of heart rate variability and plasma norepinephrine levels did not show that seated cervical manipulation produced short-term changes in autonomic nervous system activity compared to a sham procedure in healthy young adults.

[Effect characteristics and mechanism of acupuncture in autonomic nerve regulation].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect characteristics and mechanism of acupuncture in autonomic nerve regulation through a comprehensive literature analysis. METHODS CNKI and PubMed databases were searched for the studies on acupuncture in autonomic nerve regulation in the past 30 years, and Excel was used to perform a descriptive analysis of research subjects, intervention methods, intervention sites (acupoint selection), intervention parameters, and effect mechanism of acupuncture. RESULTS A total of 202 studies were included, among which there were 51 clinical studies, mostly on the nervous system and the circulatory system; Neiguan (PC6), Zusanli (ST36), Fengchi (GB20), and Hegu (LI4) were the most frequently used acupoints, manual acupuncture was the most common intervention method, most of the acupoints selected were in the extremities, head, face, and neck, and heart rate variability was the main parameter for evaluation. Among the 151 animal experimental studies, there were many studies on the digestive system and the circulatory system; "Zusanli" (ST36), "Neiguan" (PC6), and "Shenmen" (HT7) were the most frequently used acupoints, electroacupuncture was the most common intervention method, most of the acupoints selected were in the extremities, and the main effect mechanism was to regulate the central vagus nerve activity and the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP). CONCLUSION Acupuncture has a good effect on autonomic nerve regulation. The acupoints in extremities, head, and face are mainly used in studies. The main action pathways are central vagus nerve activity and CAP, as demonstrated in the animal experiments. Acupuncture has specific effect characteristics, which are closely associated with the acupoints, methods, and parameters of stimulation.

Effect of Chinese tuina massage therapy on resting state brain functional network of patients with chronic neck pain

Abstract:ObjectiveCervical disease, a type of chronic pain, can greatly impact quality of life. Traditional Chinese tuina, a form of therapeutic massage and manipulation, has been shown to be effective in relieving pain and other symptoms in patients with chronic neck pain. This study applied functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore the features of the resting state network of patients with chronic neck pain caused by cervical radiculopathy, and how tuina affects the causality between intrinsic brain networks.MethodsUsing Granger causality analysis, effective connectivity of brain networks of 10 patients with chronic neck pain was compared with 10 healthy control subjects. Resting state fMRI data were using magnetic resonance scanning. Cervical spondylosis symptom scores were evaluated before and after 4 weeks of tuina therapy. Independent component analysis was applied to extract the specific networks related to sensation, execution, and cognition, including sensorimotor network (SMN), visual network (VN), auditory network (AN), anterior and posterior default mode network (aDMN, pDMN), left frontoparietal network and right frontoparietal network.ResultsCompared with the control group, data from the treatment group revealed two major findings: before tuina therapy, SMN had a profound influence on aDMN and AN greatly affected pDMN; however, after 4 weeks of tuina therapy, aDMN and SMN showed reversed causality.ConclusionChronic neck pain caused by cervical radiculopathy may influence the DMN, which plays an important role in emotion, cognition, and memory, by stimulating the sensory afferent network. Tuina not only significantly relieves pain and discomfort, but also reverses the causality between aDMN and SMN.

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this study was to obtain the stress-strain of the cervical spine structure during the simulated manipulation of the oblique pulling manipulation and the cervical rotation-traction manipulation in order to compare the mechanical mechanism of the two manipulations. Methods: A motion capture system was used to record the key kinematic parameters of operating the two manipulations. At the same time, a three-dimensional finite element model of the C0-T1 full healthy cervical spine was established, and the key kinematic parameters were loaded onto the finite element model in steps to analyze and simulate the detailed process of the operation of the two manipulations. Results: A detailed finite element model of the whole cervical spine including spinal nerve roots was established, and the validity of this 3D finite element model was verified. During the stepwise simulation of the two cervical spine rotation manipulations to the right, the disc (including the annulus fibrosus and nucleus pulposus) and facet joints stresses and displacements were greater in the oblique pulling manipulation group than in the cervical rotation-traction manipulation group, while the spinal cord and nerve root stresses were greater in the cervical rotation-traction manipulation group than in the oblique pulling manipulation group. The spinal cord and nerve root stresses in the cervical rotation-traction manipulation group were mainly concentrated in the C4/5 and C5/6 segments. Conclusion: The oblique pulling manipulation may be more appropriate for the treatment of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy, while cervical rotation-traction manipulation is more appropriate for the treatment of cervical spondylosis of cervical type. Clinicians should select cervical rotation manipulations for different types of cervical spondylosis according to the patient's symptoms and needs.

Abstract:Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy of spine-manipulating therapy for cervical spondylotic non-myelopathy.Methods: One hundred subjects were randomized by controlled single-blind clinical trial into treatment group(n=50) and control group(n=50),and treated respectively by spine-manipulating therapy and conventional massage,with a course of two months.Results: After treatment,the scores of Chinese medicine symptoms were significantly reduced(P<0.01) in both groups,and they reduced more significantly in treatment group than in control group(P<0.01).Conclusion: Spine-manipulating therapy has positive effects on cervical spondylotic non-myelopathy.

Abstract:Background Long-term and high-intensity work can lead to considerable discomfort in people’s cervical spines. Objectives This study sought to explore the effect of mind-body exercise intervention on the cervical spine mobility of people with neck discomfort through meta-analysis. Methods This study’s researchers were searched a total of five research databases for data retrieval: China National Knowledge Infrastructure (from 1979), Web of Science (from 1950), PubMed (from 1965), Cochrane (from 1991), and EBSCO (from 1949) (Date of retrieval: March 10, 2021). Two authors independently searched literature records, scanned titles, abstracts, and full texts, collected data, and assessed materials for risk of bias. Stata14.0 software was used for the data analysis (Registration number: INPLASY202140126). Results Four articles were finally included with a total of 208 participants, and their age range was 18–65 years old. (1) Mind-body exercise intervention had a significant improving effect on Cervical extension, effect size of [SMD = 0.51 (95% CI 0.13 to 0.88), p <0.01; I2 = 45.2%], there was moderate heterogeneity; Mind-body exercise intervention had a significant improving effect on Cervical flexion, effect size of [SMD = 0.61 (95% CI 0.32 to 0.90), p <0.01; I2 = 5.7%], no heterogeneity; (2) Mind-body exercise intervention was no effect on the other four cervical range of motions; (3) The difference in participant’s neck discomfort was the source of heterogeneity, and all results had the potential risk of publication bias. Conclusion This study showed that mind-body exercise had a positive effect on the extension and flexion of people with neck discomfort. However, further research and more reliable evidence were needed to prove that mind–body exercise could be used for the treatment of neck discomfort.

Clinical Observation on Manipulation and Cervical Traction in the Treatment of Upper Cervical Spondylosis (65 Patients Were Observed)

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of manipulation and cervical traction in the treatment of upper cervical spondylosis.Methods From April 2008 to March 2009,65 patients with disease of upper cervical spondylosis were treated.As visiting order,randomly contrasted the manipulation and cervical traction group,manipulation group and control group before and after treatment about the neck pain,upper limb pain or num,headache or dizziness,sympathetic symptoms and cervical activities,assessed the therapeutic effect in three groups.Results The symptoms such as the neck pain,upper limb pain or num,headache or dizziness,sympathetic symptoms and cervical activities improved significantly in the first two groups,while the neck pain,headache or dizziness and cervical activities improved significantly in the control group,but upper limb pain or num and sympathetic symptoms didn′t improve in this group.Overall effective rate in the manipulation and cervical traction group,manipulation group and control group were 87.5%,78.2%,72.2%,respectively.Conclusion Mnipulation and cervical traction are effective in the treatment of disease of upper cervical spondylosis,especially can improve symptoms such as the neck pain,upper limb pain or num,headache or dizziness,sympathetic symptoms and cervical activities.
Observation of Curative Effect of Two-step Manipulation Combined with Chinese Medicine Steam Therapy on Cervical Spondylotic Nerve Root Disease

Abstract:Objective:To observe the clinical effect of two-step manipulation on nerve root type cervical spondylosis.Methods:80 cases of nerve root type cervical spondylosis were randomly divided into two groups,40 cases were treated with traditional Chinese medicine and steam therapy(observation group),and 40 cases with traditional Chinese medicine steam treatment group(control group),and the clinical efficacy of the two groups was compared and analyzed.Results:The total effective rate of the treatment group was 92.5％,and the total effective rate of the control group was 77.5％℃.The clinical efficacy of the treatment group was better than that of the control group(P＜0.05).Conclusion:The two-step manipulation combined with Chinese medicine steam treatment of nerve root type of cervical spondylosis is more accurate.
Discovery of Cervical Physiological Sluice Gate Phenomenon and Treatment of Cervical Spondylosis: Invention and Clinical Verification of Neurological Training Manipulation Regulation and Control Technology

Abstract:Background: At present, the effect of treating cervical spondylosis is not ideal, which is an urgent problemto be solved. On the basis of finding the cervical physiological sluice gate phenomenon and putting forwardthe sluice gate theory, We invented the manipulation of regulation and control technology of the cervical physiological sluice gate, and carried out clinical verification and mechanism discussion. Method: 64 patients with long-term recurrent cervical spondylosis were randomly divided into treatment groupand control group, 32 patients in each group. The treatment group was treated with manual regulationand control technology, while the control group was treated with cervical traction and far infrared rayon the basis of manual regulation and control technology. After treatment, the patient conducts self training according to the prescribed method. Symptoms, head and neck motion, neck muscle strengthand magnetic resonance imaging of cervical spine were evaluated before and after treatment, and the data were statistically analyzed. Follow up 6 months after treatment. During the treatment, observe the physiological sluice gate phenomenon of cervical vertebra, determine the sluice gate position, put forward the sluice gate theory and analyze its formation mechanism, laying the foundation for the clinical application of the method. Findings: Of the 64 patients in the two groups, 85.94% (55/64) were patients with mixed cervical spondylosis. Compared with before treatment, the symptoms, head and neck range of motion and neck muscle strength of patients after treatment were significantly improved (p < 0.05). In the first treatment, when resistance increased the muscle strength of the posterior cervical muscle, the clinical symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, shoulder and neck pain were significantly relieved in an average of 12.78 seconds. We call it cervical physiological sluice gate phenomenon. The lateral atlantoaxial joint, which has an angle of nearly 30 degrees in the form of anterior high posterior low slope, plays the role of adjusting and cotrol the physiological sluice gate of the cervical spine. Through its own mechanical regulation and control mechanism, it maintains the dynamic balance and physiological radian of anterior and posterior cervical muscle forces within a certain range, and plays a role in regulating and control cerebral bloodflow, neural signal and neurotransmitter transmission. Magnetic resonance imaging of cervical physiological sluice gate retroflexion shows that the cervical 2-3 vertebral body retroflexion is similar to the shape of human forehead droop and mouth closure. Therefore, we call it 'forehead droop andmouth closing sign' for early recognition and treatment. This sign accounted for 71·88%(46/64) of 64cases of cervical spondylosis. There was significant improvement after treatment with manipulation regulation and control technique (p < 0.05). Follow up was carried out after 6 months of treatment. Abstract:Objective: To compare the mechanical parameters and trajectory while operating the oblique pulling manipulation and the cervical rotation–traction manipulation. Methods: An experimental research measuring kinematics parameter and recording motion trajectories of two cervical manipulations were carried out. A total of 48 healthy volunteers participated in this study, who were randomly divided into two groups of 24 representing each of the two manipulations. A clinician performed two manipulations in two groups separately. A motion capture system was used to monitor and analyze kinematics parameters during the operation. Results: The two cervical manipulations have similar thrust time, displacement, mean velocity, max velocity, and max acceleration. There were no significant differences in active and passive amplitudes between the two cervical rotation manipulations. The thrust amplitudes of the oblique pulling manipulation and the cervical rotation–traction manipulation were 5.735 ± 3.041° and 2.142 ± 1.742°, respectively. The thrust amplitudes of the oblique pulling manipulation was significantly greater than that of the cervical rotation–traction manipulation ( P < 0.001). Conclusion: Compared with the oblique pulling manipulation, the cervical rotation–traction manipulation has a less thrust amplitudes.

The autonomic nervous system: A potential link to the efficacy of acupuncture

Abstract:The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a diffuse network that regulates physiological systems to maintain body homeostasis by integrating inputs from the internal and external environment, including the sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric nervous systems (ENS). Recent evidence suggests that ANS is one of the key neural pathways for acupuncture signal transduction, which has attracted worldwide attention in the acupuncture field. Here, we reviewed the basic and clinical research published in PubMed over the past 20 years on the effects of acupuncture on ANS regulation and homeostasis maintenance. It was found that acupuncture effectively alleviates ANS dysfunction-associated symptoms in its indications, such as migraine, depression, insomnia, functional dyspepsia, functional constipation. Acupuncture stimulation on some specific acupoints activates sensory nerve fibers, the spinal cord, and the brain. Using information integration and efferents from a complex network of autonomic nuclei of the brain, such as the insular cortex (IC), prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), amygdala (AMG), hypothalamus, periaqueductal gray (PAG), nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), ventrolateral medulla (VLM), nucleus ambiguus (AMB), acupuncture alleviates visceral dysfunction, inflammation via efferent autonomic nerves, and relieves pain and pain affect. The modulating pattern of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves is associated with acupuncture stimulation on specific acupoints, intervention parameters, and disease models, and the relationships among them require further exploration. In conclusion, ANS is one of the therapeutic targets for acupuncture and mediates acupuncture's actions, which restores homeostasis. A systemic study is needed to determine the rules and mechanisms underlying the effects of acupoint stimulation on corresponding organs mediated by specific central nervous networks and the efferent ANS.

Abstract:Background. With the accelerated pace of life in modern society, changes in work style, and the popularity of computers, the prevalence of cervical spondylosis (CSR) is increasing, and the age of onset is advancing. Once suffering from this disease, it is often difficult to cure and recurring, with complex clinical symptoms, causing a serious impact on human health. Objective. To evaluate the efficacy of manipulation and cervical traction in the treatment of radical cervical spondylosis. Methods. The PubMed, CNKI, and Wanfang databases were searched for literature. The literature related to this study was included according to selective criteria and inhibitory elimination criteria, and valuable information was selected for statistical analysis, resulting in a total of 11 randomized controlled trials with 994 subjects. Results. The short-term efficacy of manual treatment for CSR was superior to that of cervical traction alone ( P < 0.05 ); subgroup analysis showed that the short-term efficacy of pulling or rotational manipulation was superior to that of cervical traction ( P < 0.05 ). The mean difference between symptoms and manipulation VAS scores was higher before and after treatment when compared with cervical traction for CSR ( P < 0.05 ); the subgroup analysis showed that VAS scores, upper extremity anesthesia scores, and survivorship scores were lower for pulling or rotating manipulation than for cervical traction ( P < 0.05 ). Conclusion. The advantages of manual therapy in terms of short-term efficacy, VAS pain scores, neck pain, upper extremity anesthesia, and survivorship improvement provide a theoretical basis for its clinical impact.

Abstract:The basic principle of acupuncture is to regulate the body function by mean of the biological information evoked by stimulating some acupuncture points. The special functions of acupuncture are to dredge the pass of veins and arteries of a human body for promoting blood circulation and then to attain the purpose of disease cure. Magnetic stimulation also has many excellent effects in nervous regulation, disease cure, and rehabilitation as well as many ways, which are similar effects with acupuncture. In this paper, the functions and mechanism of magnetic stimulation and acupuncture are analyzed respectively, some effects of magnetic stimulation on acupoints for human neural function are explored by the analysis of evoked EEG signals with sample entropy method.

Abstract:To observe the therapeutic effect of 5-step manipulation and traction of cervical vertebrae on vertebroarterial type of cervical spondylosis and probe its mechanism.The 120 patients were randomly divided into a treatment group (manipulation group) and a control group (traction group) with 60 cases in each. The curative effects in the two groups were evaluated after treatment.The curative rate and the total effective rate is 26.7% and 93.4% respectively in the treatment group, and 13.3% and 86.7% respectively in the control group, with statistical significance in the total effective rate of the two groups (P < 0.05).Manipulation and traction of cervical vertebrae can effectively improve the clinical symptoms of vetebroarterical type of cervical spondylosis with a good therapeutic effect.
Manipulation Of And Sustained Effects On The Human Brain Induced By Different Modalities Of Acupuncture: An Fmri Study

Abstract:The javascript: void(0) manipulation and sustained effects of acupuncture have been investigated in multiple studies, but several findings are inconsistent with one another. One possible explanation for these discrepancies is that different modalities of acupuncture were utilized in these studies. In the present study, we investigated both the manipulation and sustained effects of acupuncture in different modalities, including manual acupuncture (MA), electroacupuncture (EA) and transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS). MA, EA, TEAS and sensory control stimulation were applied to 18 healthy subjects, and combined block-designed and resting-state fMRI scans were performed. In analyzing these data, the block-designed datasets were used to assess the manipulation effect by employing a modified general linear model. The data from the resting states, before and after stimulation, were used to explore the brain networks involved in the sustained effect. The results showed that the two 1-min stimulation periods produced similar activation patterns in the sensory control with positive activation in the sensorimotor areas and negative activation in the default mode areas. Although similar patterns could be detected in the first stimulation period in MA, EA and TEAS, no positive activation result was observed in the second stimulation period, and EA showed a more extensive deactivation compared to MA and TEAS. Additionally, all three of the modalities of acupuncture stimulation could increase the instinct brain network in rest. A more secure and spatially extended connectivity of the default mode network was observed following MA and EA, and TEAS specifically increased the functional connectivity in the sensorimotor network. The present study suggested that different brain mechanisms might be recruited in different acupuncture modalities. In addition, the findings from our work could provide methodological information for further research into the mechanism of acupuncture.
The effect of suboccipital muscle dysfunction on the biomechanics of the upper cervical spine: a study based on finite element analysis

Abstract:Objective: Muscle dysfunction caused by repetitive work or strain in the neck region can interfere muscle responses. Muscle dysfunction can be an important factor in causing cervical spondylosis. However, there has been no research on how the biomechanical properties of the upper cervical spine change when the suboccipital muscle group experiences dysfunction. The objective of this study was to investigate the biomechanical evidence for cervical spondylosis by utilizing the finite element (FE) approach, thus and to provide guidance for clinicians performing acupoint therapy. Methods: By varying the elastic modulus of the suboccipital muscle, the four FE models of C0-C3 motion segments were reconstructed under the conditions of normal muscle function and muscle dysfunction. For the two normal condition FE models, the elastic modulus for suboccipital muscles on both sides of the C0-C3 motion segments was equal and within the normal range In one muscle dysfunction FE model, the elastic modulus on both sides was equal and greater than 37 kPa, which represented muscle hypertonia; in the other, the elastic modulus of the left and right suboccipital muscles was different, indicating muscle imbalance. The biomechanical behavior of the lateral atlantoaxial joint (LAAJ), atlanto-odontoid joint (ADJ), and intervertebral disc (IVD) was analyzed by simulations, which were carried out under the six loadings of flexion, extension, left and right lateral bending, left and right axial rotation. Results: Under flexion, the maximum stress in LAAJ with muscle imbalance was higher than that with normal muscle and hypertonia, while the maximum stress in IVD in the hypertonic model was higher than that in the normal and imbalance models. The maximum stress in ADJ was the largest under extension among all loadings for all models. Muscle imbalance and hypertonia did not cause overstress and stress distribution abnormalities in ADJ. Conclusion: Muscle dysfunction increases the stress in LAAJ and in IVD, but it does not affect ADJ.

Abstract:目的观察交感神经兴奋对周围神经电生理和传导功能的影响,探讨颈交感神经兴奋在颈肩痛的发病机制中的可能作用.方法用不同强度电流刺激大鼠颈交感神经后,用肌电图分别检测正中神经神经传导速度(nerve conduction velocity ,NCV)和潜伏期(latency ,LAT).结果电刺激大鼠颈交感神经能降低实验侧正中神经NCV,并使LAT延长,强度越大,NCV和LAT的变化越明显,差异有统计学意义(P\u003c0.05).结论颈交感神经干受刺激可显著地降低其支配的周围神经的功能.周围神经功能降低程度与颈交感神经受刺激强度存在相关关系。

Abstract:Quantifying saccadic eye movements can assist in identifying dysfunctional brain networks in both healthy and diseased people. Infrared Oculography is a simple and non-invasive approach to capturing and quantifying saccades, providing information that might aid in diagnosis and outcome assessments. The effect of spinal manipulation on quantified saccadic performance parameters has not been fully studied despite known post-manipulative effects on the brain and brainstem regions controlling them. This case study investigates spinal manipulation's immediate and long-term effects on saccadic eye movements by quantifying the saccades of a male patient diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome. The patient performed horizontal saccades that were quantified before and immediately following cervical spinal manipulation both at the case study's start and following a 2-week interim, during which the subject received six manipulative treatments. Immediate and long-term post-manipulative effects were observed, and the results revealed various post-manipulative effects across all quantified parameters in addition to between right and leftward saccades. The immediate post-manipulative effect was greatest at the case study's onset, while the long-term right and leftward saccadic symmetry were most affected. The observations in this case study demonstrate that cervical spinal manipulation influences saccadic eye movements, providing new insights into its central neurological effects and therapeutic applications beyond its most commonly known use in pain management. More importantly, it encourages scientists to undertake further clinical investigations on wider scales.
