Abstract:To transmit an unknown qubit robustly through the noisy channel, one may first encode it into a certain quantum error correction code and then transmit it. The remote party decodes it and stores it. Sending a qubit in such a way can significantly reduces the error rate compared with directly sending the qubit itself. Here we show how to realize such a scheme by linear optics. An unknown qubit can be sent to a remote party robustly through a noisy channel if we use the error correction code [1–3], which plays a very important role in quantum computation and information [4]. The main idea there is first to encode the unknown qubit to an entangled state of many qubits and after the remote party receives this quantum code, he first decodes it and then obtains the original state faithfully. This is very different from the classical error correction since the unknown qubit in principle can not be copied [5] or observed exactly therefore the simple repetition code as used in classical coding is not applicable here. With the discovery of maximal polarization entangled state with the spontaneous para-metric down conversion(SPDC) [6], linear optics method has been perhaps the most powerful tool for realizing the entanglement based quantum tasks. Abstract:An optical scheme for the reliable transfer of quantum information through a noisy quantum channel is proposed. The scheme is inspired by quantum error-correction protocols, but it avoids the currently infeasible requirement for a controlled-NOT operation between single photons. The quantum communication scheme presented here rejects single bit-flip errors instead of correcting them and combines quantum-measurement properties of three-particle entangled (GHZ) states with properties of quantum teleportation.

Abstract:Faithful transmission of quantum information is a crucial ingredient in quantum communication networks. To overcome the unavoidable decoherence in a noisy channel, to date, many efforts have been made to transmit one state by consuming large numbers of time-synchronized ancilla states. However, such huge demands of quantum resources are hard to meet with current technology and this restricts practical applications. Here we experimentally demonstrate quantum error detection, an economical approach to reliably protecting a qubit against bit-flip errors. Arbitrary unknown polarization states of single photons and entangled photons are converted into time bins deterministically via a modified Franson interferometer. Noise arising in both 10 m and 0.8 km fiber, which induces associated errors on the reference frame of time bins, is filtered when photons are detected. The demonstrated resource efficiency and state independence make this protocol a promising candidate for implementing a real-world quantum communication network.
Suppressing communication errors using quantum-enabled forward error correction

Abstract:Because noise is inherent to all measurements, optical communication requires error identification and correction to protect and recover user data. Yet, error correction, routinely used in classical receivers, has not been applied to receivers that take advantage of quantum measurement. Here, we show how information uniquely available in a quantum measurement can be employed for efficient error correction. Our quantum-enabled forward error correction protocol operates on quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and achieves more than 80 dB error suppression compared to the raw symbol error rate and approximately 40 dB improvement of symbol error rates beyond the QPSK classical limit. With a symbol error rate below 10-9 for just 11 photons per bit, this approach enables reliable use of quantum receivers for ultra-low power optical communications. Limiting optical power improves the information capacity of optical links and enables scalable net.

Abstract:Improving the tolerance of channel noise is an important task for devising and implementing quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols. Quantum phase-flip error rejection (QPFER) code [Phys. Rev. Lett.92, 077902 (2004)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.92.077902] has been introduced by Wang to increase the tolerable phase-flip noise of QKD implementations. However, an experiment that demonstrates its advantages is still missing. Here, we experimentally verify the QPFER code with the assistance of two photon quantum states generated by spontaneous parametric downconversion. The methods of parity check and postselection are introduced to the protocol for achieving the phase-flipping rejection. Comparing with the standard realization of the single photon polarization encoding BB84 scheme, the quantum error rate after decoding is obviously reduced when the probability of channel noise is less than 25%. The experiment results also show that QPFER protocol can reduce error rate, obtain a higher key rate, and be robust in the noisy channel when the noise level is in a proper region.

Abstract:Optical communication is the standard for high-bandwidth information transfer in today's digital age. The increasing demand for bandwidth has led to the maturation of coherent transceivers that use phase- and amplitude-modulated optical signals to encode more bits of information per transmitted pulse. Such encoding schemes achieve higher information density, but also require more complicated receivers to discriminate the signaling states. In fact, achieving the ultimate limit of optical communication capacity, especially in the low light regime, requires coherent joint detection of multiple pulses. Despite their superiority, such joint detection receivers are not in widespread use because of the difficulty of constructing them in the optical domain. In this work we describe how optomechanical transduction of phase information from coherent optical pulses to superconducting qubit states followed by the execution of trained short-depth variational quantum circuits can perform joint detection of communication codewords with error probabilities that surpass all classical, individual pulse detection receivers. Importantly, we utilize a model of optomechanical transduction that captures non-idealities such as thermal noise and loss in order to understand the transduction performance necessary to achieve a quantum advantage with such a scheme. We also execute the trained variational circuits on an IBM-Q device with the modeled transduced states as input to demonstrate that a quantum advantage is possible even with current levels of quantum computing hardware noise.

Experimental Quantum Coding Against Qubit Loss Error

Abstract:The fundamental unit for quantum computing is the qubit, an isolated, controllable two-level system. However, for many proposed quantum computer architectures, especially photonic systems, the qubits can be lost or can leak out of the desired two-level systems, posing a significant obstacle for practical quantum computation. Here, we experimentally demonstrate, both in the quantum circuit model and in the one-way quantum computer model, the smallest nontrivial quantum codes to tackle this problem. In the experiment, we encode single-qubit input states into highly entangled multiparticle code words, and we test their ability to protect encoded quantum information from detected 1-qubit loss error. Our results prove in-principle the feasibility of overcoming the qubit loss error by quantum codes.

Abstract:The use of quantum bits (qubits) in cryptography holds the promise of secure cryptographic quantum key distribution schemes. It is based usually on single-photon polarization states. Unfortunately, the implemented ``qubits'' in the usual weak pulse experiments are not true two-level systems, and quantum key distribution based on these imperfect qubits is totally insecure in the presence of high (realistic) loss rate. In this work, we investigate another potential implementation: qubits generated using a process of parametric downconversion. We find that, to first (two-photon) and second (four-photon) order in the parametric downconversion small parameter, this implementation of quantum key distribution is equivalent to the theoretical version. Once realistic measurements are taken into account, quantum key distribution based on parametric downconversion suffers also from sensitivity to extremely high (nonrealistic) losses. By choosing the small parameter of the process according to the loss rates, both implementations of quantum key distribution can in principle become secure against the attack studied in this paper. However, adjusting the small parameter to the required levels seems to be impractical in the weak pulse process. On the other hand, this can easily be done in the parametric downconversion process, making it a much more promising implementation.

Abstract:Erasures, or errors with known locations, are a more favorable type of error for quantum error-correcting codes than Pauli errors. Converting physical noise into erasures can significantly improve the performance of quantum error correction. Here we apply the idea of performing erasure conversion by encoding qubits into metastable atomic states, proposed by Wu, Kolkowitz, Puri, and Thompson [Nat. Comm. 13, 4657 (2022)], to trapped ions. We suggest an erasure-conversion scheme for metastable trapped-ion qubits and develop a detailed model of various types of errors. We then compare the logical performance of ground and metastable qubits on the surface code under various physical constraints, and conclude that metastable qubits may outperform ground qubits when the achievable laser power is higher for metastable qubits.

Abstract:Integrated photonics provides a versatile platform for encoding and processing quantum information. However, the encoded quantum states are sensitive to noise, which limits their capability to perform complicated quantum computations. Here, we use a five-qubit linear cluster state on a silicon photonic chip to implement a quantum error-correction code and demonstrate its capability of identifying and correcting a single-qubit error. The encoded quantum information is reconstructed from a single-qubit error and an average state fidelity of 0.863 +/- 0.032 is achieved for different input states. We further extend the scheme to demonstrate a fault-tolerant measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC) on stabilizer formal-ism that allows us to redo the qubit operation against the failure of the teleportation process. Our work provides a proof-of-concept working prototype of error correction and MBQC in an integrated photonic chip.

Abstract:High-rate quantum error correcting codes mitigate the imposing scale of fault-tolerant quantum computers but require the efficient generation of non-local many-body entanglement. We provide a linear-optical architecture with these properties, compatible with arbitrary codes and Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill qubits on generic lattices, and featuring a natural way to leverage physical noise bias. Simulations involving hyperbolic surface codes, promising quantum low-density parity-check codes, reveal a threshold comparable to the 2D surface code at about a ten-fold improvement in encoding rate.

Abstract:A major challenge in practical quantum computation is the ineludible errors caused by the interaction of quantum systems with their environment. Fault-tolerant schemes, in which logical qubits are encoded by several physical qubits, enable correct output of logical qubits under the presence of errors. However, strict requirements to encode qubits and operators render the implementation of a full fault-tolerant computation challenging even for the achievable noisy intermediate-scale quantum technology. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the existence of the threshold in a special fault-tolerant protocol. Four physical qubits are implemented using 16 optical spatial modes, in which 8 modes are used to encode two logical qubits. The experimental results clearly show that the probability of correct output in the circuit, formed with fault-tolerant gates, is higher than that in the corresponding non-encoded circuit when the error rate is below the threshold. In contrast, when the error rate is above the threshold, no advantage is observed in the fault-tolerant implementation. The developed high-accuracy optical system may provide a reliable platform to investigate error propagation in more complex circuits with fault-tolerant gates.

Abstract:We introduce a generalisation of quantum error correction, relaxing the requirement that a code should identify and correct a set of physical errors on the Hilbert space of a quantum computer exactly, instead allowing recovery up to a pre-specified admissible set of errors on the code space. We call these quantum error transmuting codes. They are of particular interest for the simulation of noisy quantum systems, and for use in algorithms inherently robust to errors of a particular character. Necessary and sufficient algebraic conditions on the set of physical and admissible errors for error transmutation are derived, generalising the Knill-Laflamme quantum error correction conditions. We demonstrate how some existing codes, including fermionic encodings, have error transmuting properties to interesting classes of admissible errors. Additionally, we report on the existence of some new codes, including low-qubit and translation invariant examples.

Abstract:By quantum mechanics principle, two remote parties that have never interacted each other can be entangled through entanglement swapping operation done by a third party. Currently existing entanglement swapping experiments are done probabilistically by post-selection, i.e., once a successful swapping is verified, the resultant entanglement is destructed. We propose a simple non-post-selection scheme to probabilistically make the high quality quantum entanglement swapping with the spontaneous parametric down conversion(SPDC) process. After the swapping, two spatially separated parties who have never interacted each other are entangled through a single photon entangled state. Our scheme only requires the normal photon detectors which can distinguish the vacuum and non-vacuum Fock states.
Pushing the Qubit Rate Limit for Fast Quantum Data Transmission by Quantum Error Correction

Abstract:Fast quantum data transmission faces several shortcomings such as the indistinguishability of some partly overlapping signals, the channel noises, and so on. Based on the encoded quantum data transmission protocol, an unconventional scheme is presented to overcome the indistinguishability problem of the encoded qubits effectively, so that the upper bound for qubit transmission rate can be considerably raised compared with the un-encoded cases. It can be regarded as a combination of an entanglement swapping technique and a quantum error-correcting scheme, which also provides us a new way of thinking for improving other technologies such as quantum communication, quantum storage technology etc. Besides, from the quantum error correction's point of view, our technique can also be regarded as a method to deal with some families of nonlocal errors, which may facilitate the research in the relevant field.

Abstract:An optical transmitter that uses entangled light generated by spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC), in conjunction with an optimal quantum-optical receiver (whose implementation is not yet known) is in principle capable of obtaining up to a 6 dB gain in the error-probability exponent over the optimum-reception un-entangled coherent-state lidar to detect the presence of a far-away target subject to entanglement-breaking loss and noise in the free-space link [Lloyd'08, Tan'08]. We present an explicit design of a structured quantum-illumination receiver, which in conjunction with the SPDC transmitter is shown to achieve up to a 3 dB error-exponent advantage over the classical sensor. Apart from being fairly feasible for a proof-of-principle demonstration, this is to our knowledge the first structured design of a quantum-optical sensor for target detection that outperforms the comparable best classical lidar sensor appreciably in a low-brightness, lossy and noisy operating regime.
