Abstract:The luminescence behavior of the dibenzoyl methane europium(III) complexes (Eu(DBM)3) in sol–gel derived host materials have been investigated. The steady-state excitation and emission spectra and the time-resolved spectra of the 1% EuCl3 and 3% DBM co-doped gel indicated an efficient ligand-to-metal energy transfer. The Eu(DBM)3 complexes in the gel showed longer 5D0 lifetimes in comparison with Eu(DBM)3·3H2O complexes. The luminescence intensity of the 1% EuCl3 and 3% DBM co-doped gel decreased continuously with increasing temperature and time of heat treatment, which indicated the gradual decomposition of the Eu(DBM)3 complexes in the gel during heat treatment.

Abstract:Luminescence enhancement and quenching of Eu(TTA)(3)center dot 2H(2)O complex in DMF (N,N-dimethylformamide) solution containing silver nanoparticles were observed, which depended on the concentrations of both europium complex and silver nanoparticles. Their origins were discussed based on absorption spectra, excitation and emission spectra, and luminescent decay dynamics. The results indicated that when the concentration of Eu complex was high enough, strong interaction among complex molecules occurred. The presence of Ag nanoparticles definitely decreased the interaction among complex molecules. In the solution containing Ag nanoparticles the electronic-dipole transition rate of D-5(0)-F-7(2) increased due to enhanced local field surrounding Eu3+ ions, while the nonradiative transition rate from D-5(0) decreased owing to decreased resonant energy transfer among europium complex molecules. These two factors lead to the luminescence enhancement of europium complex. As to the luminescent quenching, was attributed to absorption competition between Ag nanoparticles and europium complex at excited wavelength.

Abstract:The fluorescence spectra of europium (III) complex in Langmuir-Blodgett film were obtained when the sample was irradiated by 355 nm UV light corresponding to a ligand pi-->pi* transition at room temperature. A 115 cm(-1) splitting of the D-5(1) energy level of europium (III) ion was observed. A datailed discussion of intramolecular energy transfer of europium (III) complex in Langmuir-Blodgett film was given. On the basis of simulating the lifetime of D-5(0) State of europium (III) ions, it was found that the population of D-5(0) slate comes from two pathways: one is directly from the ligand triplet state (T-1), and the other is from D-5(1) Slate which is also populated from the ligand triplet stare (T-1). The branching ratio for these two pathways is 0.18. The kinetics parameters of intramolecular energy transfer of europium (III) complex in LB film were also derived.

Abstract:New lanthanide luminescence materials were prepared. The main component lanthanide chelates generally need a relatively high content of rare earth. Inorganic luminescence materials only need low rare earth concentration using doped method. Similarly, lanthanide chelates can be added to complex matrix by doped method. In this way, low rare earth concentration emission was successful in the lanthanide chelates system as well. The influence of europium ion concentration on luminescence intensities was discussed. When the europium ion weight in the complex is only about 0.6%, the sample exhibits good luminescence properties. The fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared spectra, micro-Raman and electron spin resonance spectra of the samples were measured. And a possible luminescence mechanism was suggested by the inorganic doped mechanism and the luminescence of lanthanide complexes together.

Abstract:The in situ synthesis processes and luminescence behaviors of the 2-pyridinecarboxylic acid europium (PA:Eu3+) complexes in sol–gel derived host materials have been investigated. The Raman scattering spectrum of the 1mol% EuCl3 and 3mol% PA co-doped gel was similar to that of the PA:Eu3+ complex powders that were synthesized in ethanol, which indicated that the PA:Eu3+ complexes have been in situ synthesized in the 1mol% EuCl3 and 3mol% PA co-doped gel. The excitation and the emission spectra of the 1mol% EuCl3 and 3mol% PA co-doped gels, which were similar to that of the PA:Eu3+ complex powders, also indicated an efficient ligand-to-metal energy transfer which belonged to the complexes. The decay curve of the 1mol% EuCl3 and 3mol% PA co-doped gel can be fitted to a double-exponential function. After the gel was heated at 90°C for 12h, the decay curve can be fitted to a single-exponential function due to vaporization of the most residual water in the gel. The dependence of luminescence intensity and the decay time of x% EuCl3 and 3x% PA co-doped gels that were heated at 90°C for 12h on various concentrations of the EuCl3 and PA were also investigated. The luminescence intensity and the decay time reached a maximum for 1mol% EuCl3 and 3mol% PA co-doped gel that were heated at 90°C for 12h.

Abstract:Luminescence behavior of Eu(TTFA)3 and TbSSA co-doped gel has been investigated. The excitation and emission spectra of the EuCl3 and thenoyltrifluoroacetone co-doped gel appeared to exhibit intramolecular energy transfer from the coordinated thenoyltrifluoroacetonate to the europium ions, and the luminescence behavior of sulphosalicylic acid and TbCl3 co-doped gel also indicated the synthesis of TbSSA in the gel. The luminescence behavior of x% Eu(TTFA)3 and (1–x)% TbSSA (x=0–1) co-doped gel changed significantly with the ratio of Eu(TTFA)3 and TbSSA. By adjusting the ratio of the Eu(TTFA)3 and TbSSA in the gel, the luminescence of different colors which resulted from the mixture of the emission bands of Eu3+ ions and Tb3+ ions can be observed.

Abstract:Yttrium orthotantalate co-doped by Eu3+ and Gd3+ has been synthesized by solid state method. The emission and excitation spectra of YTaO4: Gd, Eu are studied in detail. In the excitation spectra of Eu3+5 D0→7 F2 transition emission in YTaO4: Gd, Eu, there appear excitations of Gd3+ and TaO3- 4 group, which indicate energy transfer from Gd3+ and TaO3- 4 group to Eu3+ in the process of luminescence. The excitation spectra of Gd3+ emission (λ =312. 5 nm) including strong excitation of charge transfer of TaO3- 4 group show energy transfer from host lattice to Gd3+. So there are two ways of energy transfer in YTaO4: Gd, Eu system. The strong evidences from excitation spectra, emission spectra and diffusive reflection spectra of this system show that Gd3+ can play an intermediate role in the process of luminescence. There is energy transfer from TaO3- 4 to Gd3+ and finally to Eu3+ via the charge transfer state and spectral overlap. The energy transfer from TaO3- 4 to Gd3+ is a dominating process in this system.

Abstract:Luminescence performance and photoisomerization control of sensitized energy transfer in a series of Eu(acac)3De complexes that contain photochromic diarylethene (De) as the ligand are studied by theoretical methods. Both the open-ring and closed-ring isomers exhibit a consistent coordination mode between the EuIII ion and De. An unneglected weak interaction originating from electrostatic attraction is found in the region of the coordinate bond Eu-N. The open-ring isomer has higher triplet energy levels than 5D1 and 5D0 of the EuIII ion, which facilitates forward energy transfer from De to the EuIII ion. The closed-ring isomer, for the extended conjugated system formed in cyclization, has a much lower triplet energy level than 5D0 of the EuIII ion. The energy-gap deficit makes energy transfer unavailable. By utilization of this phenomenon, regulation of energy transfer and reversible on/off luminescence switching of the europium(III) complex can be achieved. The forward and backward energy-transfer rates in different channels are also calculated for the series of complexes. A statistics diagram is obtained to exhibit the change trend of energy-transfer rates in the forward and backward directions as a function of the triplet energy level, which indicates the contribution of different channels to energy transfer in each level region and figures out that the optimal triplet energy level should be in the range of 21740-19532 cm-1.

Abstract:We investigated the energy transfer and charge trapping (CT) in dye-doped organic light-emitting devices by using the magneto-electroluminescence as a tool. An intra-molecular charge-transfer fluorescent material N,N-diphenyl-4-(9-phenylnaphtho-[2,3-c][1,2,5]thiadiazol-4-yl)aniline was selected as the guest emitter. The tri-(8-hydroxyquinoline)-aluminum and 1,3-bis(9-carbazolyl)benzene were selected as the hosts. Our results demonstrate that as the energy difference between the HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital)/LUMO (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) of the host and the guest (ΔEHOMO/ΔELUMO) increases, the CT becomes more dominant, and the CT cannot be ignored even when the ΔEHOMO/ΔELUMO is small and the emission spectrum of the host overlaps the absorption spectrum of the guest well.

Abstract:The TiO2 gel doped with UO22+ and Eu3+ has been prepared by a sol-gel method. The quenching of the UO22+ emission by Eu3+ and the energy transfer from the excited state of UO22+ to the ground state oh Eu3+ have been investigated. The energy transfer has been studied by the measurement of luminescence lifetime tau, calculations of energy transfer efficiency eta(ET) and energy transfer rate W-ET The experimental results indicated that the quenching is combined static and dynamic mechanism, but the static mechanism is dominant.

Abstract:The luminescence properties and energy transfer of some rare earth complexes were extensively studied by laser induced fluorescence technique at room temperature. The excitation spectra of central ion ( Eu3+) was obtained. The emission spectra from the triplet state and the singlet state of ligand ( DBM) were obtained. It was found that there exists a dip peak in the emission spectra of Eu(DBM)(3).2H(2)O complex because the transition D-5(2) <-- F-7(0) of the central ion Eu3+ absorbs the emission of the ligand DBM (dibenzoylmethane).

Abstract:Rare earth ternary chelates Ln(TFA)3(TPPO)2 (Ln=Eu, Tb and Eu/Tb) were synthesized in gel glasses via in situ technique. Pure Ln(TFA)3(TPPO)2 chelates were also synthesized for a comparative study. Photoluminescence properties of the in situ chelates in gel glasses and the pure chelates were studied. In order to investigate the energy transfer mechanism from Tb3+ ions to Eu3+ ions in Eu/Tb(TFA)3(TPPO)2 chelates, photoluminescence spectra and fluorescence decay curves have been measured at the temperature range from 10K to 293K. It is found that the energy transfer rate constants calculated from the fluorescence lifetimes do not vary with temperature, which suggests that Dexter mechanism is responsible for the energy transfer from Tb3+ ions to Eu3+ ions in both pure and in situ Eu/Tb ternary chelate.

Abstract:A series of lanthanide(Tb3+ Eu3+ Sm3+, Dy3+, Gd3+) complexes with 1,3-diphenyl-4-phenylacetyl-5-pyrazolone were synthesized and. characterized by elementary analysis, FTIR and UV-Vis spectra. The Eu3+ complex was further characterized by X-ray diffraction. The luminance properties of the lanthanide complexes were studied in detail. Importantly, the triplet energy level of the. ligand was measured with reference to the phosphorescence spectrum of its gadolinium complex, and the difference between the ligand's triplet energy level and the excited energy level of lanthanide ion results in different photoluminescences of the corresponding complex.

Abstract:Three novel europium complexes with 1-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-3-(2-naphthyl)-propane-1,3-dione (TNPD) and 2,2-dipyridine (Bipy) or 1,10-phenan-throline (Phen) were synthesized and confirmed by FT-IR, (1)H NMR, UV-vis absorption and elemental analysis. Photoluminescence behavior of complexes Eu(TNPD)3, Eu(TNPD)3·Bipy and Eu(TNPD)3·Phen were investigated in detail. Their emission spectra exhibited the characteristic emission bands that arise from the (5)D0→(7)FJ (J=0-4) transitions of the europium ion in solid state. Meanwhile, the results of their lifetime decay curves indicated that only one chemical environment existed around the europium ion. The intrinsic luminescence quantum efficiency (η) and the experimental intensity parameters (Ωt) of europium complexes were determined according to the emission spectra and luminescence decay curves in solid state. The complex Eu(TNPD)3·Phen showed much longer lifetime (τ) and higher luminescence quantum efficiency (η) than complexes Eu(TNPD)3 and Eu(TNPD)3·Bipy.

Abstract:Homogeneous transparent monolithic samples doped with Eu(TTA)3(TPPO)2 chelate have been prepared by using the in situ synthesis technique. The time-resolved spectra of Eu(TTA)3(TPPO)2 chelate dispersed in both vinyltriethoxysilane-derived sol–gel glass and ethanol solution were measured at room temperature. The possible mechanisms responsible for the electronic transitions and excitation energy migration of the chelate in the sol–gel glass were discussed. The decay curves of the 5D0 level of the europium ions in Eu(TTA)3(TPPO)2 chelate in above two matrices were also obtained in the temperature range from 13 to 300K and the temperature dependence of the lifetime of the 5D0 level was studied.

Abstract:Fast, cost effective, and robust means of detecting and quantifying lanthanides are needed to support more efficient tracking within the nuclear, medicinal, and industrial fields. Furthermore, methods for isolating lanthanide signal from spectroscopic interferents are also needed. Applying spectroelectrochemistry to the detection of these species can meet those needs. However, application of this technique is limited by the low molar absorptivities and quantum yields of the lanthanides. These limitations can be circumvented by complexing the lanthanides with sensitizing ligands that enhance fluorescence, thereby dropping the limits of detection. Complexation will also cause changes in the electrochemical be havior of the lanthanides. To demonstrate this concept, studies were completed using europium as a model lanthanide in complexes with four different sensitizing ligands, which included 2,2'-bipyridine and related derivatives. Results indicate that all four studied complexes demonstrate quasi-reversible redox couples and improvements in limits of detection where electrochemical and spectroscopic characteristics showed some dependence on attached ligand. All four complexes studied display the necessary characteristics for spectroelectrochemical analysis, which was successfully and reproducibly applied to all Eu complexes.
