Abstract:To control chlorine concentration stable in case of changeable hydraulic conditions with the method of input-output model, the situation that flow changed largely in water distribution systems was analyzed. The principle of homologous coverage and the expression that was to evaluate the influence of homologous coverage on node response matrix were proposed. The coverage region was decomposed into two regions named influenced region and reflowed region. Iteration was presented after analyzing the properties of output time series, and calculation procedures for stable control of chlorine concentration in water distribution systems were also proposed. After evaluating an example network, the method of setting boosters in reflowed region showed better control on single node, and the capacity of stable control could be improved when the ratio about operation time of tank and pump was reduced. Achieving coverage and dosing in reflowed region could obtain better stable control of chlorine concentration in water distribution systems.

Abstract:Chlorine dosing disinfection in waterworks is an important process to guarantee the quality of tap water.As the time-delay is very large,some parameters are time variable and the disturbance exists in many aspects,chlorine dosing system can't achieve good effects if controlled by common PID controller.This problem can be solved by adopting an auto control scheme which combines expert control with traditional cascade control.In practice,an automatic chlorine dosing system was built in a waterworks in Nanjing through integrating the scheme with PLC and configuration software.A nice control effect has been obtained.

Abstract:An optimization model with two stages was proposed for the dynamic schedule of booster chlorination in a water distribution network(WDN) in order to decrease the variability of chlorine residuals. The first stage located the minimum number of booster stations (minimum construction cost) to supply enough chlorine residuals within a WDN, and the residual coverage set represented the impact of booster stations on monitoring nodes. Then the second stage determined the optimal chlorine injection rates based on the desired chlorine residual mass concentration. Numerical results show that the model can effectively obtain the reasonable locations of booster stations and the injection rate schedule. The model can decrease the variability of chlorine residuals and allow a lower chlorination dose, which improves the water quality in WDN.

Abstract:The traditional methods of increasing the chlorine disinfectant dosage in the drinking water distribution system (DWDS) to control microorganisms and improve the safety of drinking water quality are subjected to several challenges. One noticeable problem is the unpleasant odor generated by chlorine and chloramines. However, the generally proposed chlorine dosage optimization model ignores the chloric odor distribution in the DWDS. This study proposes a comprehensive multi-parameter water quality model and aims to balance the trade-offs between: (i) minimize the flavor profile analysis (FPA) degree of the chloric odor produced by chlorine and chloramines in the DWDS, and (ii) minimize the economic investment (chlorine dosage and operation cost). EPANET and back propagation (BP) network integrated with the Borg algorithm were employed as innovative approaches to simulate the chlorine, chloramines, and chloric odor intensity in the DWDS. Moreover, the application of the multi-parameter model was demonstrated in a real-world DWDS case study. 0.5 mg-Cl2/L (mg/L) chlorine at 8 secondary chlorination points was added to the DWDS as an optimized chlorine dosing scheme considering the olfactory and financial objective functions simultaneously. When switching to a superior water source, the FPA of the chloric odor in DWDS increased by a maximum of 1.4 at most if the initial chlorine dosage remained as before. To avoid the occurrence of chloric odor and also control the residual free chlorine (residual chlorine) at a suitable value, the initial and secondary chlorine dosages were optimized to 0.4 mg/L and 0.3 mg/L, respectively. Under this condition, the initial chlorine dosage was reduced by 50% compared to the original operation scheme in City J, China, the qualification rate of the residual chlorine reached 97.2%, basically consistent with that before water source switching, and the chloric odor intensity of the DWDS was controlled below FPA 3.4.

Abstract:So far, the water quality model based on the hydraulic model is static which assumes that the decay parameters of the residual chlorine of the pipes to be constant. Therefore, the model is not fit for the multi-sources water distribution system whose chlorine decay parameters are different. This paper presents a new water quality model adaptable to the real network more, which is solved by the genetic algorithm, and the optimized result which satisfies the requirement of the residual chlorine concentration at each junction is obtained. The model is applied to the real network and obtains the valuable information on the water quality operation.

Abstract:Chlorine dosing is a complicated system with time delay, time-varying, non-linear and coupling. In this paper, multivariable adaptive generalized predictive controller based on Smith predictor is proposed. Instead of the optimal predictor, the Smith predictor with adaptive identifying parameters can increase the robustness of the MIMO system. Simulation and application in water-works at Suzhou (China) shows that the algorithm can overcome time-varying, time delay and disturbance.

Abstract:This paper introduces an automatic dosing system used in the reclaimed water reuse equipment for river water treatment. The automatic dosing system can replace the manual regulation mode. In view of the shortcomings of manual dosing in the sewage treatment system, through the study of sewage inlet and outlet flow, online water quality index and other factors. Abstract:Two different methods of water quality reliability analysis under booster chlorination were presented,namely,a simplified method based on desired chlorine residual which brought in water demand variations and used the theory of linear superposition,and a new method based on chlorine residual coverage rate.The reliability analysis of water quality under booster chlorination was carried out within a water distribution network using these two methods.The results show that booster chlorination can maintain a high reliability without impairing its advantages in allowing a lower average chlorine and decreasing the variability of chlorine residuals which lead to a lower total dosage.

Abstract:During drinking water treatment, the chemical dosing processes, such as coagulant dosing process, ozone dosing process and chlorine dosing process are usually manually operated based on the operator knowledge and experience. However, due to the variations of water quality, water flow and process operational conditions and characteristics of large time-delay and nonlinear for the chemical dosing processes, it is difficult to adjust the chemical dosages in time by operators to keep the treated water quality stable, especially during the periods of rapid and frequent variations of water quality, water flow and process operational conditions. Thus, the improvements of control methods for the chemical dosing processes are essential to the operation of drinking water treatment plants. The Xiangcheng Water Treatment Plant in Suzhou, China has been utilizing the automatic control for chemical dosing processes since February 2012. Automatic controllers are designed respectively for the coagulant dosing process, ozone dosing process and chlorine dosing process. After the implementation of automatic control, operators are not necessary to keep constant attention. In addition, due to the improvements of control accuracies for the chemical dosing processes, the chemical dosages are reduced on the premise of ensuring safe water. Thus, both of the human resource costs and material costs can be saved. The practical control results demonstrate the efficiencies of proposed methods.

Abstract:Adding chlorine process in water treatment is very difficult to control.Considering the characteristics of large time-delay and disturbances of the adding chlorine system,the cascade control configuration is used and the self-correction control is adopted for large variation of the system parameters and the instrument drift.In the practical renovation of the adding chlorine system in waterworks,a good control effect has been obtained by establishing a dynamic model of residual chlorine in the entrance and exit of the clear water basin and applying the adaptive cascade control scheme.

Abstract:Most of the traditional control methods of circulating cooling water of center air-conditioning is dosing chemicals artificially, which has the problems that the control precision is low, the operations are complex and a waste of the chemicals. Selecting an AVR microcontroller as the master controlling chip and using fuzzy control algorithm, a design method of an automatic dosing system of circulating cooling water of center air-conditioning is completed. Ideas for the key functional modules and the implementation process of control algorithm are given in this paper. The industrial fields test shows that this system could better detect water quality parameters in real-time, automatically dose chemicals, monitor data remotely and alarm. It can reduce the chemicals waste, has an excellent engineering significance.

Abstract:A best chlorine injection schedule for each source and booster station in a distribution system is studied and a multiple object optimal operation model of water distribution system(WDS) considering residual chlorine is also presented. The optimal scheduling of water distribution system is composed of two parts, the hydraulic and the water quality optimal control, and water quality optimal control is based on the hydraulic optimal control. As an important component of water quality optimal control, the residual chlorine control is selected as one of the objective functions of the optimal scheduling of water distribution system. A new multiple objects optimal operation model of WDSs is developed. The objective functions include minimum of residual chlorine and minimum costs of WDSs operation. The decision variables include the demand, pressure and residual chlorine at each water source, nodal demand, nodal pressure, and nodal residual chlorine. The hydraulic and the water quality model are solved by EPANET. The multiple objects optimal operation model of WDS is solved by the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). Adaptive penalty functions are also applied in the process of model solved As a case study, the multiple objectives optimal operation model is applied in a large scale WDS. The WDS ’s total demand is about 1,320,000 m 3 /d, and is composed of 9 water plants, 32 water sources, and 468 wells. The result shows that the optimization of chlorine of each water source makes the distribution of nodal chlorine more reasonable and the concentration of nodal residual chlorine was reduced.
Chloric Disinfection of Water Treatment Process Automatic Monitoring Alarm System

Abstract:Chlorine automatic monitoring alarm system was proposed in order to solve the problem of chlorine gas leak in water treatment.The system used the constant potential electrolysis sensor for the detection of the front,and the core processing chip of which was based on microcontroller MSP430F149.This paper designed constant potential circuit,signal conditioning circuit,firstorder and second-order alarm circuit,control circuit and human-machine control interface.The measurement range of the device is from 0 to 20 ppm,the measurement accuracy reach to 0.1 ppm.The test results show that the automatic monitoring and warning system can reach the expected targets,meanwhile,can meet the real monitoring and controlling application in chemical industry,pharmacy,paper making industry and water treatment industry.

Abstract:Traditional water quality early warning systems are often static and the algorithms built in are difficult to modify while the system is in operation. So a changing environment has brought great challenges to the systems. To overcome the shortages, a new water quality early warning system is designed; it is based on the idea that the algorithms codes can be compiled dynamically and executed automatically. The algorithms codes can be updated in real time and executed as jobs. And thread-pool is used to execute the jobs in parallel and the system is designed to manage jobs for fault-tolerant. Finally, the realization of the framework is given and some rules to make the system stable and high fault tolerant are discussed.

Abstract:Booster chlorination has been applied by many utilities for better chlorine-residual maintenance. In this paper, a new water-age based method for optimal location and dosage of booster disinfection has been proposed, as well as an uncertainty analysis of chlorine residuals. Chlorine-age, a novel indicator of water quality, is firstly introduced based on water age. By minimizing the total chlorine-age of nodes in a water distribution network (WDN), a new model for optimal booster location is proposed. The chlorine-age based model is independent of chlorine-decay simulation, and therefore avoids the complexity of obtaining kinetic parameters and prevents misleading results caused by inaccurate simulation of chlorine residuals. The uncertainties of chlorine residuals increase along with the distance and time consumption for delivering water. In this study, chlorine-age is employed to measure the uncertainties of nodal residuals, and optimal chlorine dosage is calculated considering the uncertainties. The proposed method has been tested on an example network and a real-life network to illustrate its validity and applicability. The results have shown that the method is feasible and reliable in practical application.
