Abstract:In the increasingly warming wave of renovation and reconstruction in old cities,exploring models which can balance various contradictions is the chief problem in the redevelopment of old cities in China.However,there is no general model.Taking Hangzhou Quanye Li as an example,this article explores the methods and processes meeting with the Chinese current situation.Based on the site survey,the project analyzes the development mode,planning method,and architecture designing ideas of the construction and renovation in Quanye Li old residential area from the angles of sociology and typology.Finally,it suggests to exploiting apartments for the elderly and residential districts for both oldsters and youngsters,as well as continuing traditional settlement texture and keeping live traditional spatial sense in the planning and architecture design.

Abstract:According with urban economy's rapid development,there is a common characteristic appearing in many China cities which is speed of urbanization in these cities is growing faster and faster.Then,a number of historical culture cities are rethinking a question what is how to making their conservation more effective in progress of modernization in China.This article takes Hangzhou as an example,first,compares two different conservation methods between Hangzhou and Suzhou;then,finds reasons why Hangzhou cannot conserve its historical cultural resources effectively by using the old city rebuilding conservation method;after that,analyses relationship between economic development and urban space structure;finally,deduces conclusion that conservation of a old city must depends on developing of a new city.With contribution of leisure economy development,the historical cultural city-Hangzhou could achieve a wonderful consequence that is the old city feeds on itself.

Abstract:Abstract This research focuses on the renovation of historical buildings of Zhuyangxin Plaster Store, Hangzhou, China. By following three architectural design strategies, namely protecting the surrounding environment, rejuvenating the commercial and cultural function and recovering the original appearance, the historical buildings are to be retrofitted to achieve a sustainable regeneration. Meanwhile, based on an on-site investigation into the present residential environment of the buildings, suitable architectural technologies to improve the residential environment are analyzed from the aspects of envelop, facilities, sun shading, passive technology and sunlight utilization. After some retrofit measures were adopted for the envelop of the historical buildings, the simulation results showed that not only the thermal and light environment will be improved, but also energy efficiency of 50.34% can be achieved according to the standard in China.

Abstract:Green and energy-saving reforms, which use protection as a precondition, can, not only reduce a building's energy use but also improve its level of comfort. Such reforms can also adapt to the new demands of modern society while extending the life of traditional architecture. Therefore, this research chose a classical, traditional house in Hangzhou Zhejiang, China, as a transformation object - attempting to implement low-cost, energy-saving technology. The building's energy consumption and level of comfort before and after the transformation have been simulated and measured to compare the effects of the transformation. The authors hope this research will provide insights into green and energy-saving reform technology and aid the sustainable development of traditional houses.

Abstract:Through an analysis of Hangzhou's Jinghang Grand Canal riverside industrial land uses this paper emphasizes the importance of maintaining the relationship of people with the land with the continuity of local culture.The renovation model for riverside industrial land is discussed and an interactive function conglom-eration model is proposed.The conglomeration model identifies the growth point for renovation that retains sustainable functions and maintains both old and new building ratios.An effective functional cycle that considers both functional and location needs is formed to push the area toward positive development.

Abstract:This research is based on the refinement and diversification demand of housing stock quality improving in China. The paper focuses on the complexity of built environment in old residential areas, which involves numerous responsibilities and rights and multi-role cooperation in the process of regeneration. This paper studies the application of open building theory and its derivative theories in the area of housing regeneration, researches the current situation of policies, mechanisms and design methods for the regeneration of old residential areas in China and discusses the theoretical applicability of open building theory in the design practice of old residential building renewal methods in China. The study investigates the situation of the old residential areas in renovation, divides the responsibility and right relationship between the participants and building components by levels, and establishes a localized theoretical model for the regeneration strategy design of the old residential buildings in China. This study will provide scientific theoretical support for the constructing of a sustainable mechanism involving professional decision-making, long-term management and capital introduction, for the build of a multi-dimensional quality improving regeneration of the old residential areas in China.

Abstract:In the process of urbanization,the style conflict between modern residences and traditional residences are serious in a lot of famous historic and cultural cities of China at present. In this paper,the conservation and development of residential characteristic features in Changting is discussed. The current development situation of residential buildings and the influencing factors are analyzed, and it is proposed that the resident's community building committee should be set up,residential housing should be managed based on dividual areas,and integrated development tactics should be carried out to promote style harmonization of modern residences and traditional residences.

Abstract:How to realise the goal of city revival through the preservation of historic districts is an important issue for all historic cities. This article introduces the Preservation and Renovation Project of Zhongshan Road in Hangzhou regarding its guiding principles, design concepts, and the entire construction process. In this project, the existing historical buildings along Zhongshan Road were preserved by keeping the remains of different historical periods and various lifestyles of the inhabitants. Rather than merely refurbishing the street front only, we reconstructed the Southern Song Dynasty city-block walls along Zhongshan Road and restored the Fangxiang city fabric to create the streetscape of the former Imperial Avenue. Afforested terraced teahouses were built along the road, and the original water system was restored so as to realise the atmosphere of ‘watertown’. New buildings were added by adopting local materials and vernacular building forms. The article summarises two strategies for the preservation of a historic district in a large city. One is the comprehensive project planning by research and investigation. The other is the overall design guideline for the street blocks. It also reflects on the disappointing aspects that mainly resulted from time limitations and the poor taste in the refurbishment of shop houses.

Abstract:After rapid urbanization from last several decades, Pearl River Delta area (PRD) in China gradually steps into an urban regeneration process, especially in the field of housing sector. However, neighbour and housing reform activities in last few years focused on the inner prat of the cities where are mainly historical districts or chaotic urban villages. While another large proportion of housing in "Dan Wei" has been ignored. It is a typical Chinese working unit combined with living and other activities, but currently faces new challenges of social and functional transformation. Although a new regeneration design strategy: "Micro-upgrading", was firstly proposed in Guangzhou and specific for this neighborhood typology, it still cannot ideally resolve its core negative issues in last few years. Therefore, based on an architectural school's design course, this study will select a region concentrated of "Dan Wei" units in Guangzhou, which is the core city of PRD. By making use of "Open Building" theory and "Level" strategy, some valuable research outcomes and design solutions will be discussed and proposed.

Abstract:By investigating the exciting situation of the heritage architectures in Changning District of Shanghai City, especially analyzing the statistics of reconstruction and extension of heritage architectures in Shanghai, for example, the position, format and function change of reconstruction, we probe the whole process of architectural scene destruction, historic buildings renovation and protection which mainly caused by reconstruction and extension. Simultaneously, we analyze the reasons of the reconstruction and extension. Ultimately, by a series of successful case study about historical buildings reconstruction and extension in foreign countries, we put forward possible strategies about how to make Shanghai heritage architectures renewal more sustainable.
