Abstract:Laser induced autofluorescence spectroscopy of enamel and teeth at different artificial demineralization stage irradiated by 403 nm semiconductor laser were investigated. The quantitative evaluation parameter of mineral content is built on the basis of the fluorescence characteristic spectrum of 443 nm and 526 nm ratio to the total fluorescence integral. In the end, the dependence of characteristic spectrum on the excitation light power was experimentally investigated. The results reveal that at least 10 mW power is necessary to stimulate the featured spectrum.

Abstract:The effects of laser irradiation with 632.8 and 532 nm on rheological properties of blood were comparatively studied in vitro. Under the irradiation condition of 30 mW, laser irradiation of blood samples using a spot diameter of 5 mm with each laser, showed promising results in the modulation of hemorheological properties. When blood samples from patients with abnormally high values of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were irradiated, the values of ESR were lowered statistically by either of the 632.8 or 532 nm lasers. The laser irradiation reduced blood viscosities at different shear rates (10–110 S−1) for the hyper-viscosity blood samples. Laser irradiation increased the electrophoretic mobility (EPM) of erythrocytes when the values of the sample's EPM were abnormally slow. The erythrocyte deformability was enhanced by laser irradiation when the deformability of the sample from the patients was originally poor. For verifying the improvement of laser irradiation on erythrocyte deformability, the typical erythrocyte samples with poor deformability were produced by the pre-treatment of the erythrocytes with Ca2+. The deformability of these erythrocyte samples was also improved after laser irradiation. These results suggest that membrane-bound hemoglobin (Hbm) might be the initial site of the interaction, since Hbm is the main cause of poor deformability when erythrocytes were treated with Ca2+. In all experiments including ESR, blood viscosity, EPM and erythrocyte deformability, the 532 nm laser demonstrated more efficient effects on modulating rheological properties than 632.8 nm laser. This wavelength effect is consistent with the absorption spectrum of hemoglobin, reflecting that hemoglobin may be one of the action targets under laser irradiation.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:The purpose of this study was to investigate the in vitro effects of He-Ne laser irradiation on some rheological factors of human blood, such as blood viscosity, erythrocyte deformability, and sedimentation rate.BACKGROUND DATA:The intravascular irradiation of low power laser has been applied in pre-clinical and clinical to treat various pathological processes. However, the mechanism is not fully understood so far. Especially the interaction and related mechanism between the laser and blood are unclear. In this work, by measuring the change of the main rheological factors after laser irradiation, the interaction and mechanism were explored.METHODS:A30-mW He-Ne laser was used for irradiation with a 4-5-mm-diameter beam spot on blood samples, with a fluence rate of about 150 mW/cm.(2) The irradiation time was 60 min, so the total dose of irradiation was 540 J/cm.(2) The pathological samples of blood were obtained from patients (volunteers), and each sample was divided into two tubes for irradiation and control. The blood viscosity, erythrocyte deformability, and sedimentation rate were measured after laser irradiation and compared with un-irradiated control. The blood samples with poor erythrocyte deformability were prepared by adding Ca(2+) to the normal erythrocytes of a healthy person for investigating the laser effect on erythrocyte deformability further.RESULTS:Laser irradiation reduced the erythrocyte sedimentation rate of blood samples, which had a hyper-sedimentation rate originally. The blood viscosity of samples in hyper-values was lowered by laser irradiation in all shear rates measured (10-110 S(-1)), with a relative variation of approximately 10%. The deformability of erythrocytes from pathological samples and Ca(2+)-treated samples was improved after laser irradiation.CONCLUSIONS:The positive effects of laser irradiation on improving the rheological properties of blood were demonstrated in vitro.

Abstract:The elegant characteristics of the laser diode and its limits are introduced based on the analyzing of the advantages and disadvantages of the HeNe laser.In order to improve the performance of laser diode,the students are guided to collimate and shape the laser diode beam with available devices in the laboratory.Some experiments,such as the fabrication of holographic grating and lens,the electro-optic modulation and liquid crystal light valve modulation,are carried out with the improved laser diode.The results indicate that the improved laser diode can replace the He-Ne laser and meet the requirements of synthetic experiments on optical information.

Abstract:Abstract : A He-Ne laser heterodyne system was utilized to evaluate the dispersive effect at 3.39 micrometer in a He-Ne laser. The dispersion introduced by lasering atoms at 3.39 micrometer was measured as a function of cavity loss, excitation level and deviation of the laser frequency from line center. Theoretical and experimental results were compared, and close agreement was obtained if the natural line width was taken to be 115 MHz and the Doppler line width was taken to be 315 MHz for the 3.39 micrometer transition. The evaluation of the dispersive effect at 3.39 micrometer was then used in the laser heterodyne measurement of plasma density using a three-wavelength He-Ne laser. Temporally and spatially resolved electron number densities in the range from 2 x 10 to the 11th power to 3 x 10 to the 12th power per cu. cm. were measured in the afterglow of an argon plasma. The spatially resolved laser measurements involving the 3.39 micrometer transition compared wuite favorably with the measurements using only the .6328 micrometer and 1.15 micrometer transitions and were also comparable to the integrated electron density measurements made with a microwave cavity operating in the TM010 mode at 5.0 GHz. Abstract:A visible, white and dazzling radiation was observed at room temperature when the nanostructured materials in vacuum were irradiated by many kinds of semiconductor laser diodes (LDs). The photoluminescence from different nano-materials has common property as well as individual characteristics. Some nanostructured semiconductors can be stimulated to emit an ultraviolet (UV) radiation besides visible light. A normal InGaAs LD operating at 980 nm is a typical example, which possesses a strong deep UV emission at room temperature.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a single-laser-based sensing method for measuring both blood oxygenation and microvascular blood flow. Based on the optimal wavelength range found from theoretical analysis on differential absorption based blood oxygenation measurement, we designed and fabricated a 720-nm-band wavelength tunable V-cavity laser. Without any grating or bandgap engineering, the laser has a wavelength tuning range of 14.1 nm. By using the laser emitting at 710.3 nm and 724.4 nm to measure the oxygenation and blood flow, we experimentally demonstrate the proposed method.
Effect of the Laser Radiation on the Photoluminescence of CdSe/PMMA Nanocomposites

Abstract:CdSe/PMMA nanocomposites were prepared by a blending method. A series of photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the CdSe/PMMA nanocomposites were recorded at different intervals along with the laser radiation. It was found that with the extension of laser radiation the light emission from the CdSe nanoparticles became stronger and slightly red-shifted while that from the PMMA matrix was gradually weakened. The origin for this phenomenon has been preliminarily explained.

Abstract:The thermal effects of NaYF4:Er microcrystals under 1550 nm laser diode irradiation were investigated using an infrared thermal imaging method. The results revealed that the temperature of the LD irradiation beam area was non-uniform. The NaYF4:Er sample exhibits a rapid temperature increase within 5-10 s, and the heating process reaches its steady state after 60 s of irradiation when exposed to 1550 nm LD. The response time, temperature increase, and emission intensity of the samples depend on the excitation power density and concentration of doped Er3+ ions. Low excitation power density is required to avoid the influence of thermal effects on the up-conversion emission spectra measurement. Rapid scanning in up-conversion emission spectra measurement is not effective in preventing the heating effect under high excitation power pumping. In addition, a relative deviation of temperature, existing in fluorescence intensity ratio technique, decreased with the increasing irradiation time.

Abstract:Transmission light intensity distribution in the skin-tissue model were measured under irradiation of continuous-wave He-Ne laser at the wavelength of 632.8nm.The dependence of the light intensity distribution on the concentration of the Intralipid solution and the thickness of the vessels was studied in detail.The results show that the light intensity distribution in the Intralipid solution were significantly affected by the concentration of the solution and the thickness of the vessels.As a result of absorption and scattering effect,the light intensity was decreased.The highest point of the light intensity was the center of the light,and the intensity decrease in the radial direction.

Abstract:An abnormal fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) between two green emissions of Er3+ at room temperature, which is larger than a normal value, emerged in many reported articles. However, up to now detailed work has seldom been done to clarify this ab-normal phenomenon. In this paper, green upconversion luminescence of theβ-NaLuF4:20%Yb3+,2%Er3+ powder sample was investi-gated under 980 nm excitation at different circumstances, different pump power densities and different temperatures as well as dif-ferent air pressures. The corresponding local temperature calculated using FIR technique increased gradually with the enhancement of the pump power density. It was demonstrated that high pump power density of 980 nm laser led to the increase of local temperature of the luminescent material, which further gave the abnormal FIR.

Abstract:In the experiment it was used as an excitation at 355 nm from a third harmonic Q-switched Nd∶YAG laser.The fluorescence spectrum of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in several type water samples in combination with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) measurements were measured in laboratory.The spectrum of water Raman scattering and fluorescence of DOM were separated from total luminescence spectroscopy of water with Gaussian fit of the least squares method,and a very high correlation coefficient excelled 0.992 5 was obtained.The characteristics of fluorescence saturation of humic acid at 1 mg/L concentration were analyzed through change laser pulse power.The results show that the fluorescence intensity arrives maximum at 55 mW/cm2 with rising laser pulse energy,the fluorescence intensity rapidly decrease and the stability of fluorescence intensity becomes to worse following the intensity of laser pulse energy farther increasing.The phenomenon of quenching of excited singlet states molecular at high concentrations has been found,and a gradual ′red′ shift of peak position of DOM appeared as well as a broadening of emission spectral band-shape at linear excitation condition with rising DOM concentrations.
Influence of He-Ne Laser Treatment on Wound Healing Process after Periodontal Flap Operation

Abstract:Purpose To investigate the influence of He-Ne Laser treatment on wound healing process after periodontal flap operation. Methods One hundred and one sites of 79 patients with chronic periodonti-tis undenvent flap operation. After operation,53 sites were treated by 25 mW He-Ne Laser , while 48 sites were received a placebo procedure. Wound healing conditions and healing days were evaluated between the two groups. Results The results showed significant differences in pain reduction,congestion,oedema be-tween He-Ne laser group and control group. The healing time of the wounds treated with He-Ne laser was (6.396±1.597)d,while the healing time was (9. 813 ± 2. 473)d in control group(P0.01). Conclu-sions He-Ne laser treatment on surgical sites after periodontal flap operation could be preferable to promote wound healing in clinical therapy.

Abstract:Laser irradiation at 450 and 980 nm caused the most significant changes in the reflectance spectrum around 600 nm, associated with alterations in blood oxygen saturation. The maximum efficiency of reducing oxygen saturation was 0.20%/W for 980 nm and 0.72%/W for 450 nm, likely due to differences in blood absorption at these wavelengths. Objectives This study aimed to determine and explain changes in the reflectance spectrum of human blood in vitro when exposed to laser radiation at wavelengths of 450 or 980 nm. Methods Reflectance spectra of venous blood samples were measured before and after exposure to a single pulse of 450 or 980 nm laser radiation. A numerical optical model based on the Monte Carlo method was applied. Results Laser irradiation at 450 and 980 nm caused the most significant changes in the reflectance spectrum around 600 nm, associated with alterations in blood oxygen saturation. The maximum efficiency of reducing oxygen saturation was 0.20%/W for 980 nm and 0.72%/W for 450 nm, likely due to differences in blood absorption at these wavelengths. Conclusions The greatest change in intensity reflectance spectra and oxygen saturation of human venous blood occurs when exposed to laser radiation at 450 nm, not at 980 nm.

Abstract:The skin-tissue will be damaged when irradiated by continuous-wave laser of certain power.The model of 2-D unstable temperature field during the interaction between laser and skin-tissue was established,and the transient temperature distribution of tissue was calculated.Taking skin-tissue irradiated by He-Ne laser as an example,the skin temperature distribution was calculated and analyzed.The calculation showed that the temperature distribution in the radial direction was similar to light intensity distribution of the incident laser;thermal effect of skin-tissue irradiated by laser depend on laser parameters to a great extent,and power and beam size are more important.

Abstract:An experimental investigation on the interaction between ultra-short intense laser pulses and microcapillary has been carried out. The X spectrum from glass microcapillary is obtained successfully. Experimental results show that the X-ray radiation enhanced intensively with increasing the capillary length. In the same condition, the X-ray radiation yields of capillary target are more than one order higher than that of plane one. The average electron temperature of capillary plasma is higher when the laser pulse energy is increased.

Abstract:The effects of He-Ne laser irradiation on erythrocyte hemolysis were studied. Erythrocytes are prone to be easily damaged with hemolysis under laser irradiation. It was found that the power density (PD) of laser irradiation, but not the total irradiation power, is the crucial parameter for the hemolysis. Under irradiation with a PD of 5.41 mW/μm2, erythrocytes were photohemolyzed within a few seconds, while at a PD of 0.52 mW/μm2 the average tolerance duration (TD; from the start of irradiation to hemolysis) of erythrocytes was 110 s. The TDs of erythrocytes were also individual erythrocyte–dependent, which may be due to their different ages. The average TDs of erythrocyte samples from different donors were different, reflecting individual variations.

Abstract:To recognize different vegetation species exactly, especially the species of the same family, laser-induced fluorescence characteristics of vegetation, which is excited by 556 nm laser rather than the traditional 355 nm excitation light source, is proposed to be utilized in this article. The experimental results demonstrated that fluorescence characteristics of vegetation induced by a 556 nm laser are more obvious than that induced by a 355 nm laser. These fluorescence spectra, combined with multivariate analysis, are utilized to identify different vegetation species. The 100% of recognition rate was then acquired. Therefore, this study shows that different plant types could be accurately identified when a 556 nm laser serves as excitation light source.

Abstract:Self-absorption effect seriously affects the accuracy of the quantitative analysis in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), confining the further development of the technology. In this study, three laser wavelengths at ultraviolet (355 nm), visible light (532 nm), and infrared (1064 nm) were selected to study the influence of laser wavelength on self-absorption effect in LIBS. The effect of the laser wavelength on the spectral stability was also investigated. The results showed that when the wavelength was 1064 nm compared with the wavelength of 355 nm and 532 nm, the full widths at half maximum (FWHMs) of aluminum (Al) I 396.2 nm were reduced by 39 % and 23 %, the FWHM of potassium (K) I 766.5 nm were reduced by 58 % and 22 %. In addition, the laser wavelength was also closely related to the stability of the spectral intensity. In comparison with the laser wavelengths of 532 nm and 1064 nm, the best spectral repeatability occurred when the laser wavelength was 355 nm. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of the K I 766.5 nm was only 2.5 %. The results indicate that laser wavelength affects the self-absorption effect and spectral stability of LIBS, which means selecting an appropriate laser wavelength can reduce self-absorption and improve stability.

Abstract:Enterobacter aerogenes W-23 bacteria exhibiting hydrogen production (HP) ability were exposed to He–Ne laser irradiation (632.8nm) to improve the HP ability. Upon the optimum irradiation dosage (18mW for 22.2min), a stable positive mutant strain E. aerogenes HB-5M was obtained. The maximum specific rate of HP of the mutant strain was 0.042h-1, which was about twice that of the wild strain. It was suggested that the higher HP ability of the mutant strain might be presumably attributed to the enhancement of hydrogenase activity. In addition, the kinetic parameters of cell growth, substrate consumption and HP of the wild strain and its mutant strain were regressed to simulate the fermentation process of E. aerogenes. The simulated results agreed well with the experimental data.
