Abstract:With the recent discovery of a heavy top quark $(m_t \approx 175 - 200$ GeV), the top quark opens an window to electroweak symmetry breaking. We propose the study of four-top, $t\bar t t\bar t$, production at hadronic supercolliders as a probe to electroweak symmetry breaking.

Abstract:Four top quark production is a rare standard model process that has been observed for the first time in proton-proton collisions at \sqrts at the CERN LHC by both the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. Both observations were made in the same-sign dilepton and multilepton final states of the process and are presented in this contribution. In addition, another measurement of four top production by the CMS Collaboration using the all hadronic, one lepton and opposite-sign dilepton final states is presented. This is the first result to take a direct look at the all hadronic final state.

Abstract:We explore the possibility that the right-handed top quark is composite. We examine the consequences that compositeness would have on t (t) over bar production at the Tevatron, and derive a weak constraint on the scale of compositeness of order a few hundred GeV from the t (t) over bar inclusive cross section. More detailed studies of differential properties of t (t) over bar production could potentially improve this limit. We find that a composite top can result in an enhancement of the t (t) over bart (t) over bar production rate at the LHC (of as much as 10(3) compared to the Standatd Model four top rate). We explore observables which allow us to extract the four top rate from the backgrounds, and show that the LHC can either discover or constrain top compositeness for wide ranges of parameter space.

Abstract:The production cross--section and distributions of the top quark are sensitive to new physics, e.g., the $t\overline{t}$ system can be a probe of new resonances or gauge bosons that are strongly coupled to the top quark, in analogy to Drell--Yan production. The existence of such new physics is expected in dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking schemes, and associated with the large mass of the top quark. The total top production cross--section can be more than doubled, and distributions significantly distorted with a chosen scale of new physics of $\sim 1 $ TeV in the vector color singlet or octet $s$--channel. New resonance physics is most readily discernible in the high--$p_T$ distributions of the single top quark and of the $W$ boson.

Abstract:In a simplified model including a singlet vectorlike top quark T with charge |Q|=2/3 , we investigate the single production of T decaying into tZ at the 14 TeV LHC, 27 TeV high energy LHC (HE-LHC), and 100 TeV hadron-hadron Future Circular Hadron Collider (FCC-hh). In the four flavor scheme, we make detailed detector simulations and the background analysis. We find that the excluding and discovering capability is enhanced obviously with the increase of the collision energy. The model includes only two free parameters, the coupling constant g* , and top quark partner mass mT . For the highest integrated luminosity designed, the excluding capability can be given as follows: (1) the LHC can exclude the correlated regions g*∈[0.085,0.50] with mT∈[1000 GeV,1840 GeV] for L=3000 fb−1 ; (2) the HE-LHC can exclude the correlated regions g*∈[0.035,0.50] with mT∈[1000 GeV,2610 GeV] for L=15 ab−1 ; (3) the FCC-hh can exclude the correlated regions g*∈[0.005,0.50] with mT∈[1000 GeV,4270 GeV] for L=30 ab−1 . Abstract:Scenarios seeking to address the issue of electroweak symmetry breaking often have heavy colored gauge bosons coupling preferentially to the top quark. Considering the bulk Randall-Sundrum as a typical example, we consider the prospects of the first Kaluza-Klein mode ($G^{(1)}$) of the gluon being produced at the LHC in association with a $t \bar{t}$ pair. The enhanced coupling not only dictates that the dominant decay mode would be to a $t \bar{t}$ pair, but also to a very large $G^{(1)}$ width, necessitating the use of a renormalised $G^{(1)}$ propagator. This, alongwith the presence of large backgrounds (specially $t \bar{t} j j$), renders a conventional cut-based analysis ineffective, yielding only marginal significances of only around 2$\sigma$. The use of Machine Learning (ML) techniques alleviates this problem to a great extent. In particular, the use of Artificial Neural Networks helps us identify the most discriminating observables, thereby allowing a significance in excess of 4$\sigma$ for $G^{(1)}$ masses of $\sim$ 4 TeV.

Observation of four-top-quark production in the multilepton final state with the ATLAS detector

Abstract:This paper presents the observation of four-top-quark ($t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$) production in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The analysis is performed using an integrated luminosity of 140 fb$^{-1}$ at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected using the ATLAS detector. Events containing two leptons with the same electric charge or at least three leptons (electrons or muons) are selected. Event kinematics are used to separate signal from background through a multivariate discriminant, and dedicated control regions are used to constrain the dominant backgrounds. The observed (expected) significance of the measured $t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$ signal with respect to the standard model (SM) background-only hypothesis is 6.1 (4.3) standard deviations. The $t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$ production cross section is measured to be $22.5^{+6.6}_{-5.5}$ fb, consistent with the SM prediction of $12.0 \pm 2.4$ fb within 1.8 standard deviations. Data are also used to set limits on the three-top-quark production cross section, being an irreducible background not measured previously, and to constrain the top-Higgs Yukawa coupling and effective field theory operator coefficients that affect $t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$ production.

Abstract:Partial top quark compositeness is a crucial aspect of theories with strong electroweak symmetry breaking. Together with the heavy top partners that lift the top quark mass to its observed value, these theories predict correlated modifications of the top quark's electroweak couplings. Associated measurements therefore provide direct constraints on the ultraviolet structure of the underlying hypercolour dynamics. In this paper we employ a minimal version of top compositeness to discuss how measurements related to the top's electroweak gauge interactions can inform the potential composite nature of the TeV scale. In doing so, we identify the dominant factors that limit the BSM sensitivity. Extrapolating to a future 100 TeV hadron collider, we demonstrate that top quark measurements performed at highest precision can provide complementary information to resonance search by performing a representative resonant top partner search that specifically targets the correlated resonant electroweak top partner signatures.

Evidence for four-top quark production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Abstract:The production of four top quarks ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}t\bar{t}}$) is studied with LHC proton-proton collision data samples collected by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, and corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 138 fb$^{-1}$. Events that have no leptons (all-hadronic), one lepton, or two opposite-sign leptons (where lepton refers only to prompt electrons or prompt muons) are considered. This is the first $\mathrm{t\bar{t}t\bar{t}}$ measurement that includes the all-hadronic final state. The observed significance of the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}t\bar{t}}$ signal in these final states of 3.9 standard deviations (1.5 expected) provides evidence for $\mathrm{t\bar{t}t\bar{t}}$ production, with a measured cross section of 36 $^{+12}_{-11}$ fb. Combined with earlier CMS results in other final states, the signal significance is 4.0 standard deviations (3.2 expected). The combination returns an observed cross section of 17 $\pm$ 4 (stat) $\pm$ 3 (syst) fb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction.

Abstract:The observation of the production of four top quarks in proton-proton collisions is reported, based on a data sample collected by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016-2018 at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Events with two same-sign, three, or four charged leptons (electrons and muons) and additional jets are analyzed. Compared to previous results in these channels, updated identification techniques for charged leptons and jets originating from the hadronization of b quarks, as well as a revised multivariate analysis strategy to distinguish the signal process from the main backgrounds, lead to an improved expected signal significance of 4.9 standard deviations above the background-only hypothesis. Four top quark production is observed with a significance of 5.6 standard deviations, and its cross section is measured to be 17.7 $^{+3.7}_{-3.5}$ (stat) $^{+2.3}_{-1.9}$ (syst) fb, in agreement with the available standard model predictions.

Abstract:The new vector-like quarks are predicted by several new physics beyond the Standard Model at the TeV scale. In this paper, we study single production of vector-like quark T with electric charge <math>|Q|=2/3</math> in the framework of a simplified model. We investigate the discovery potential of heavy vector-like T-quark decaying into a top quark and a Z boson in trilepton final states, at the future 100 TeV pp colliders including the realistic detector effects. The 95% confidence level (CL) excluded regions and the 5σ discovery reach in the parameter plane between the mass of T-quark and the coupling parameter <math>g⁎</math>, are obtained at a 100 TeV pp collider with the integrated luminosity of 30 ab−1. The projected sensitivity in terms of the production cross section times branching fraction are also predicted for 5% systematic uncertainty.

Abstract:Searches for new physics in the top quark sector are of great theoretical interest, yet some powerful avenues for discovery remain unexplored. We characterize the expected statistical power of the LHC dataset to constrain the single production of heavy top partners $T$ decaying to a top quark and a photon or a top quark and a gluon. We describe an effective interaction which could generate such production, though the limits apply to a range of theoretical models. We find sensitivity to cross sections in the $10^{2}-10^{5}$ fb range, for $T$ masses between 300 and 1000 GeV, depending on decay mode.

Studies of $\rm t\bar{t}$+X at CMS

Abstract:This talk is dedicated to the most recent measurements of the processes that feature the production of a top quark pair either with an electroweak standard model boson, or another pair of top, bottom or light quarks. For the measurement of the production cross-section of top quark pair in association with a photon, 19.7 $\rm fb^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected by CMS detector at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV is used, while for four top production, $\rm t\bar{t}$ + bb, $\rm t\bar{t}$ + jj, $\rm t\bar{t}$W and $\rm t\bar{t}$Z the data collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV amounting to 35.9 $\rm fb^{-1}$, is used. The measurement of $\rm t\bar{t}\gamma$ is performed in the fiducial phase space corresponding to the semileptonic decay chain of the top quark pair, and the cross section is measured relative to the inclusive top quark pair production cross section. The fiducial cross section for this process is found to be 127 $\pm$ 27 (stat + syst) fb. The most recent search for the four top quark production, that explores the same-sign dilepton final state, set the upper observed (expected) limit to 4.6 ($2.9^{+1.4}_{-0.9}$) times predicted standard model cross section. The measured cross section of the top pair production with two b quarks is found to be $\sigma$($\rm t\bar{t}$ + bb) = 3.9 $\pm$ 0.6 (stat) $\pm$ 1.3 (syst) pb in the full phase space. The measurement of the $\rm t\bar{t}$W and $\rm t\bar{t}$Z processes combines three final states with two same-sign, three and four leptons. The $\rm t\bar{t}$W and $\rm t\bar{t}$Z production cross sections are measured to be $\sigma$($\rm t\bar{t}$Z) = $\rm 1.00^{+0.09}_{-0.08} (stat.)^{+0.12}_{-0.10} (sys.)$ pb and $\sigma$($\rm t\bar{t}$W) = $\rm 0.80^{+0.12}_{-0.11} (stat.)^{+0.13}_{-0.12} (sys.)$ pb with an expected (observed) significance of 4.6 (5.5) and 9.5 (9.9) standard deviations from the background-only hypothesis.

Abstract:We demonstrate that four top-quark production is a powerful tool to constrain the top Yukawacoupling. The constraint is robust in the sense that it does not rely on the Higgs boson decay. Taking into account the projection of the ttH production by the ATLAS Collaboration, we obtained a bound on the Higgs boson width, GH <= 2.57G(H)(SM), at the 14 TcV Large Hadron Collider with an integrated luminosity of 300 fb(-1).

Abstract:In the supersymmetry (SUSY) models, because of the mass difference between the left- and right-top squarks, the supersymmetric QCD interactions can generate parity violating effects in the production of tt̄ pairs. We show that SUSY QCD radiative corrections to the parity violating asymmetry in the production rates of the left- and right-handed top quarks via the qq̄→tt̄ process can reach about 3% at the Fermilab Tevatron with s=2 TeV. This could be observable with an integrated luminosity larger than 2fb−1. We also show that in these models the SUSY QCD radiative corrections to the tt̄ production rate are small unless gluinos are very light, of the order of 1 GeV.
Light new physics in the top quark sample from the Large Hadron Collider

Abstract:Contrary to the general trend of looking for new physics at energies beyond the current reach of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), this article proposes a strategy to look for light new physics via a meticulous study of well known and well-measured kinematic distributions. In this article, we propose performing such a study in the top-quark sample since the LHC, being a top-quark factory, helps in precise measurement of several observables related to the properties of the top-quark. One such observable is the invariant mass $m_{b\ell}$ of the b-jet and the charged lepton obtained from fully leptonic decay of pair-produced $t \bar{t}$ events. Such a strategy can be employed to extract hints for any Beyond Standard Model (BSM) scenario that allow for an exotic particle with mass close to the mass of top-quark ($m_t$) and can yield the same final state as fully leptonic decay of pair-produced top quarks. To provide a concrete study, we analyze a supersymmetric scenario with light right-handed stop quark with mass $\approx m_t$. The particle spectrum is such that the mass differences between the particles involved in the signal are small enough to lie in a potential blindspot and may be not yet firmly excluded by current LHC searches. Such spectra can yield a deviation from the Standard Model prediction in the lower region of the $m_{b\ell}$ distribution. This feature can be observed in any BSM framework that harbours light new physics that have so far escaped the LHC searches and hence can be used to extract light new physics signal irrespective of the underlying theory.

Abstract:The top quark plays a central role in particle physics, as many experiments at the Large Hadron Collider scrutinize its properties within the Standard Model. Although most of the measurements of the top quarks today concentrate on production modes initiated by quarks or gluons, this review will highlight the lesser-explored modes initiated by pomerons or photons. It aims to provide an in-depth look into both the phenomenological studies and the existing experimental measurements, emphasizing the necessity of exploring the diffractive and photon-induced production of top quarks to enhance the accuracy of top-quark measurements.

Abstract:A search for the pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark, the top squark ($\tilde{\mathrm{t}}_1$), is presented. The search targets the four-body decay of the $\tilde{\mathrm{t}}_1$, which is preferred when the mass difference between the top squark and the lightest supersymmetric particle is smaller than the mass of the W boson. This decay mode consists of a bottom quark, two other fermions, and the lightest neutralino ($\tilde{\chi}^0_1$), which is assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. Events are selected using the presence of a high-momentum jet, an electron or muon with low transverse momentum, and a significant missing transverse momentum. The signal is selected based on a multivariate approach that is optimized for the difference between $m(\tilde{\mathrm{t}}_1)$ and $m(\tilde{\chi}^0_1)$. The contribution from leading background processes is estimated from data. No significant excess is observed above the expectation from standard model processes. The results of this search exclude top squarks at 95% confidence level for masses up to 480 and 700 GeV for $m(\tilde{\mathrm{t}}_1) - m(\tilde{\chi}^0_1$) = 10 and 80 GeV, respectively.
