Abstract:The present study,through a questionnaire survey,investigates the development of learner autonomy in Chinese non-English major students in College English teaching.Three areas are explored,i.e.,English learning motivation,English learning strategies and the role of teachers in developing students' learner autonomy.The study shows that,to help develop students' learner autonomy,efforts must be made in stimulating their learning motivation,developing and optimizing their learning strategies and changing the role of teachers in College English teaching.

Abstract:With the development of society and science, English is playing an extremely important role. Such as the Grammar Translation Method leads students to learn English passively and their learning efficiency to become lower. Abstract:English self-efficacy and English autonomous learning ability are two important influential factors on college English learning in China. This study aims to explore the English self-efficacy and autonomous learning ability of 386 undergraduate students in an application-oriented university in China and to reveal the relationship between them. It was found that students experienced a medium level of English self-efficacy but they did not sense they had the ability to complete tasks in English learning, that they reported a medium level of English autonomous learning ability but their abilities of using effective learning strategies and monitoring and applying the acquired knowledge have much space to be improved, and that there was a substantial association between the surveyed students’ English self-efficacy and their English autonomous learning ability and students’ English autonomous learning ability increases with improvement of their English self-efficacy. This article is intended to provide some insights on developing Chinese college students’ English self-efficacy and autonomous learning ability so as to promote their English learning.

An Empirical Study on the Effect of Metacognitive Strategy Training on Chinese College Students’ English Autonomous Learning Ability

Abstract:This study investigates the current situation and the effects of metacognitive strategy training on college students’ autonomous learning of English in China. It adopts a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative and qualitative research methods to collect and analyze data from 201 participants. The results show that the English autonomous learning ability and metacognitive strategy application ability of college students in Tai’an area are at a medium level, and there is a significant strong correlation between the overall metacognitive strategy application ability and autonomous learning ability. Moreover, the study finds that metacognitive strategy training can effectively improve students’ autonomous learning ability and English proficiency, which offers some practical implications and suggestions for English teaching and learning.

Abstract:This paper reports an action research in college English classes by the use of peer teaching to promote learner autonomy. Questionnaire, classroom observation, group interviews and written journals were used to explore students’ readiness for autonomy, the effectiveness of peer teaching in promoting autonomy as well as the challenges of peer teaching. The initial cycle of the action research suggests peer teaching is an effective strategy for autonomy in that student teachers have taken more responsibilities for their learning and the whole class have more engagement in the class. However, there are also challenges involved, which offer valuable insight into the planning and action of coming cycles.

Abstract:Starting to introduce the background of learner autonomy,this paper firstly makes a brief review of the development of learner autonomy and the current situation of research on it in China,based on which the problem is raised that the research on learner autonomy of English major undergraduates is inadequate and the relevant questionnaire lacks testing at the statistical level.Then the paper reports the whole process of designing and modifying the Questionnaire on Autonomous English Learning Abilities of English Major Undergraduates.The statistics indicate that this questionnaire is of highly reliable and valid and suitable to test the autonomous English learning abilities of English major undergraduates.

Abstract:Under the OBE (Outcome-Based Education) concept, cultivating students’ autonomous learning ability is an important task in College English courses, requiring the joint efforts of teachers and students. Only by creating a positive learning environment, guiding students to set learning goals and plans, inspiring students’ interest in learning and self-motivation, and establishing effective feedback mechanisms, can students’ autonomous learning ability be effectively cultivated. Abstract:Abstract In recent years, influenced by the deepening reform of colleges teaching English in China, teaching English for college students has gradually been favoured and promoted. At present, many universities still use traditional English teaching methods. The traditional English teaching method only allows college students to learn basic grammar and vocabulary, without the ability of independent learning. Given these problems, this paper first proposes a framework for cultivating college students’ autonomous learning ability in English teaching based on output-based education (OBE) theory. Then, the OBE theory is introduced in detail. At the same time, the framework is applied in a university. After a semester of study, the results are combined with teachers’ and college students’ questionnaire surveys. Finally, after the questionnaire results and analysis, the framework proposed in this paper is better than other traditional English teaching methods. The experiment also shows that it not only improves the adaptability of college students’ English teaching but also improves their independent learning ability while learning English.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the Internet, online learning has become one of the directions for universities to achieve educational reform. The ability of college students to learn independently is the key to the effectiveness of online education. Starting from the current situation of college students' autonomous learning ability, this article summarizes four ways to improve their online learning autonomy: enriching the construction of online learning resources, enhancing the interactive experience of online learning students, strengthening the diversified development guided by online teachers, and constructing a multidimensional online learning evaluation mechanism. Finally, the importance of improving college students' autonomous learning ability can be summarized in four aspects.

Abstract:This article reports findings from a small-scale qualitative study conducted in partnership with a group of secondary school English Language teachers in China. The study explored the teachers' perspectives of the role of teacher autonomy in the teaching of English as a foreign language. Using semi-structured interviews, nine teachers from three selected secondary schools were able to articulate their perceptions of teacher autonomy as a professional attribute that plays a significant role in the enhancement of English language teaching. The study established that self-engagement in continuous professional development activities, setting own goals and the willingness to manage systemic constraints contribute immensely to the development of English teaching in schools. The study reiterates the link between teacher autonomy and learner autonomy including the need for school management to shift control to teachers in promoting the autonomous practice. This article discusses the pedagogical implications of teacher autonomy within the language learning setting and provides some suggestions for further study in the field of teacher autonomy in language learning in schools.
