Abstract:In this study, effect of clover(Astragalus sinicus L.) ,ryegrass(Lolium multiflroum Lam.) ,potato(Solanum tuberosum L.) and oilseed(Brassica campestris L.) planted in southern China's double-rice region as winter cover crops on soil microbial biomass C and N was evaluated by the chloroform-fumigation-extraction method. Results showed that soil microbial biomass C of clover, ryegrass and potato treatments were 248.8 mg·kg-1,256.7 mg·kg-1 and 238.9 mg·kg-1,respectively,which was significantly higher than that of a fallow field(218.3 mg kg-1)(P<0.05) . Compared with fallow, planting winter cover crops increased soil microbial biomass C by 9.43%~17.59%. Oilseed increased soil microbial biomass C by 0.63%,but not significantly different. Soil microbial biomass N was also analyzed:the values from clover, ryegrass, potato, oilseed fields was 100.3 mg·kg-1,153.8 mg·kg-1,99.9 mg·kg-1 and 86.2 mg·kg-1,respectively,which were significantly greater than that of fallow as 73.5 mg·kg-1(P<0.05) .The treatments of planting cover crops got significantly higher organic matter contents(P<0.05) . Thus,it was concluded that introducing winter cover crops into a double-rice cropping system could increase soil organic matter content and nutrient availability, stimulate the activity of soil microorganisms and improve soil fertility.
