Abstract:Abstract Surface interactions are responsible for many properties of condensed matter, ranging from crystal faceting to the kinetics of phase transitions. Usually, these interactions are polar along the normal to the interface and apolar within the interface. Here we demonstrate that polar in-plane surface interactions produce stable domain structures in the bulk of a ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal. Monodomains form in micron-thick cells, while thicker cells feature quasiperiodic stripes of an alternating uniform electric polarization, separated by domain walls, within which the polarization rotates by 180°. The surface polarity makes these walls paired with a total rotation by 360°. Analysis of the domain structures allows one to determine the polar contribution to the surface anchoring potential. The 360° pairs of domain walls resemble domain walls in cosmology models with biased vacuums and ferromagnets in an external magnetic field. The polarity-biased ferroelectric structures are highly susceptible to weak electric fields and could lead to applications in advanced electro-optics, sorting of polar inclusions, sensing, memory, and grating devices.

Abstract:Stable polarization distributions of freestanding ferroelectric nanodots with different surface charges are investigated numerically using a phase field model. The out-of-plane components of polarizations are found to be proportional to the density of surface charge. When the density of surface charge exceeds a critical value, the in-plane components of polarizations disappear. It makes ferroelectric nanodots experience an unusual transition from a vortex state to a single-domain state. Simulation results also show that regular multidomain structures can be obtained by means of specified surface charges, which suggests a way to tailor the physical properties for specific applications.
Chiral π Domain Walls Composed of Twin Half-Integer Surface Disclinations in Ferroelectric Nematic Liquid Crystals

Abstract:Ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals are polar fluids characterized by microscopic orientational ordering and macroscopic spontaneous polarizations. Within these fluids, walls that separate domains of different polarizations are ubiquitous. We demonstrate that the {\pi} walls in films of polar fluids consist of twin half-integer surface disclinations spaced horizontally, enclosing a subdomain where the polarization exhibits left- or right-handed {\pi} twists across the film. The degenerate geometric configurations of these twin disclinations give rise to kinks and antikinks, effectively partitioning subdomains of opposite chirality like Ising chains. The hierarchical topological structures dictate that field-driven polar switching entails a two-step annihilation process of the disclinations. These findings serve as a cornerstone for comprehending other walls in ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials, thereby laying the base for domain engineering crucial for advancing their nonlinear and optoelectronic applications.

Here we demonstrate that polar in-plane surface interactions of a ferroelectric nematic NF produce polar monodomains in micron-thin planar cells and stripes of an alternating electric polarization, separated by [Formula: see text] domain walls, in thicker slabs. The surface polarity binds together pairs of these walls, yielding a total polarization rotation by [Formula: see text]. The polar contribution to the total surface anchoring strength is on the order of 10%. The domain walls involve splay, bend, and twist of the polarization. The structure suggests that the splay elastic constant is larger than the bend modulus. The [Formula: see text] pairs resemble domain walls in cosmology models with biased vacuums and ferromagnets in an external magnetic field.
Synthetic active liquid crystals powered by acoustic waves

Abstract:Active nematics are materials composed of mobile, elongated particles that can transform energy from the environment into a mechanical motion. Current experimental realizations of the active nematics are of biological origin and include cell layers, suspensions of elongated bacteria in liquid crystal, and combinations of bio-filaments with molecular motors. Here, we report the realization of a fully synthetic active nematic system comprised of a lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal energized by ultrasonic waves. This artificial active liquid crystal is free from biological degradation and variability, exhibits stable material properties, and enables precise and rapid activity control over a significantly extended range. We demonstrate that the energy of the acoustic field is converted into microscopic extensile stresses disrupting long-range nematic order and giving rise to an undulation instability, development of active turbulence, and proliferation of topological defects. We reveal the emergence of unconventional free-standing persistent vortices in the nematic director field at high activity levels. The results provide a foundation for the design of externally energized active nematic fluids with stable material properties and tunable topological defects dynamics crucial for the realization of reconfigurable microfluidic systems.

Abstract:We predict theoretically the existence of a class of colloidal structures in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) cells, which are induced by surface patterns on the plates of the cell (like cells with UV-irradiated polyimide surfaces using micron size masks). These bulk structures arise from non-zero boundary conditions for the director distortions at the confining surfaces. In particular, we demonstrate that quadrupole spherical particles (like spheres with boojums or Saturn-ring director configurations) form a square lattice inside a planar NLC cell, which has checkerboard patterns on both its plates.

Abstract:Of our interest are frustration-driven pattern generating mechanisms in systems which in bulk equilibrium display spatially homogeneous long-range orientational order in absence of perturbations. As testbed material, we select thermotropic nematic liquid crystals. In bulk, they exhibit weakly discontinuous order–disorder phase transformation on varying temperature where the ordered nematic phase features spatially uniform axial order along an arbitrary symmetry breaking direction. However, due to continuous symmetry breaking (CSB) the established order is extremely susceptible to various perturbations which are in real systems in general always present. We theoretically illustrate how diverse complex patterns could be excited. Particularly intriguing configurations could appear if topological defects are present that could be generated via CSB. Our analysis is based on a relatively simple Lebwohl–Lasher-type model in which we could get analytical insight into phenomena of our interest. Using it we illustrate history dependent early stage isotropic-nematic phase evolution and final patterns in presence of "impurities" (e.g., nanoparticles). We show how characteristic effective interaction characteristics predict qualitatively different emerging patterns. Our analysis is based on CSB which is ubiquitous in nature. Consequently, demonstrated mechanisms are expected to manifest also in other condensed matter systems whose ordered phase is formed via CSB. We illustrate how kinetics and impurities could impact key structural properties of the systems of our interest.

Abstract:Ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals are a class of recently discovered fluid materials formed by highly polar molecules that spontaneously align along a common direction, giving rise to a macroscopic polarization P. Since the polarization vector is locally collinear to the optical axis n, the study of the spatial patterns of n enables deducing the structure of P. We have carried on such topological study on ferroelectric nematic droplets confined between two solid ferroelectric substrates both when the droplet is in equilibrium and during a jet-emission phase that takes place when the solid surfaces become sufficiently charged. We find that in equilibrium the droplet splits in striped domains in which P has alternating directions. When these domains extend close to the droplets' perimeter, P adopts a π-twisted structure to minimize accumulation of polarization charges. As the substrate surface charge is increased above threshold, fluid jets are emitted with a quasi-periodic pattern, a behaviour suggesting that their location is governed by an electrofluidic instability on the droplets' rim, in turn indicating the absence of specific trigger points. Soon after their emission, the jet periodicity is lost; some jets retract while other markedly grow. In this second regime, jets that grow are those that more easily connect to polar domains with P along the jet axis. Occasionally, ejection of isolated spikes also occurs, revealing locations where polarization charges have accumulated because of topological patterns extending on length scales smaller than the typical domain size.

Twisted domains in ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals

Abstract:Ferroelectric nematics present properties promising for applications, which strongly depend on the confinement conditions and the presence of defects. In this work, we have observed and analysed textures in the cells with homogeneous geometry for a ferroelectric nematogen. The studied compound reveals the ferroelectric nematic phase, NF, directly on cooling from the isotropic phase. The NF phase is stable and persists down to the room temperatures. Textures in the homogeneous cell with antiparallel alignment prefer to be arranged in twisted domains with borderlines oriented preferentially in the perpendicular direction with respect to the surface alignment (rubbing direction). We have described these domains and developed a model of 2/pi disclinations, which are separating the areas with an opposite twist sense. We discussed the character of disclination charge and explained why these disclination lines prefer to be oriented perpendicularly to the rubbing direction.

Abstract:A homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal with positive dielectric and diamagnetic anisotropies is subjected to a destabilizing ac electric field (E) in the bend geometry in the presence of a stabilizing magnetic field (B). When the applied voltage (V) is gradually increased at a given frequency, the distortion that results above a threshold (Vth) is spatially periodic with the wavevector depending on the electric frequency f. Sudden application of a voltage step, Vs, higher than Vth causes a temporal evolution of the director field, which finally attains the homogeneously distorted (HD) state; the nature of temporal evolution depends on Vs. If Vs is slightly higher than Vth, the transient deformation is periodic and the wavevector of periodicity depends on f. When Vs is high enough, the transition to HD occurs via a turbulent state.

Abstract:Smectic liquid crystals exhibit a remarkable ability to self-organize into a variety of textures, patterns, and arrays extending over large surface areas with microscale periodicity. These structures provide a useful platform for the bottom-up fabrication of microdevices and functional materials, such as microlens arrays and nanoparticle templates. Periodic structures appear in response to a conflict of director alignment created within the smectic film by external fields such as hybrid (planar-homeotropic) anchoring conditions at the film interfaces or an electric field applied normal to the surface anchoring direction. In this article, we review the formation, structure, and applications of one-dimensional (1d) patterns obtained in response to a director bend, typically induced by unidirectional hybrid anchoring conditions in thin films or under applied electric fields. Compared to lattices of focal conics, 1d patterns harbor an unusual array of topological defects, including disclination and dislocation lines, grain boundaries, and curvature walls, running along periodically spaced and bend-free cylindrical stacks of smectic layers. These defects, most of which have been described by Maurice Kleman, appear to drive the structural evolution of 1d patterns as a function of the film thickness. Under unidirectional hybrid anchoring, the defects are oriented perpendicular to the planar anchoring direction and provide highly anisotropic templates for building ordered networks of close-packed nanoparticles. Moreover, the array formation at the transition from the nematic to the smectic phase is intimately connected to the smectic phase frustration by bend distortions, producing an 'intermediate' smectic phase with partial penetration of the bend distortion through undercooled nematic domains.

Abstract:The critical field of the Freedericksz transition and switching dynamics are investigated for polymer stabilized nematic liquid crystals as a function of polymer concentration. A simple phenomenological model is proposed to describe the observed critical field and dynamic response time behaviors as a function of concentration. In this model the polymer fibrils form director domains, which are bounded by virtual surfaces with a finite anchoring energy. The Freedericksz transition occurs independently within each of these domains.

Abstract:Using electro- and magneto-optical techniques, we investigated orientational transitions in the ensembles of domains in a nematic liquid crystal on the polycarbonate film surface under the conditions of competing surface forces that favor radial and uniform planar alignment of nematic molecules. Having analyzed field dependences of the intensity of light passed through a sample, we established the threshold character of the orientational effects, plotted the calculated intensity versus magnetic coherence length, and compared the latter with the equilibrium length that characterizes the balance of forces on the polymer surface.

Abstract:We study a horizontal streaming excited by means of a low frequency and intensity acoustic wave in 2D freely suspended film of thermotropic smectic liquid crystal. Acoustic pressure induces fast periodic transverse oscillations of the film, which produce in-plane stationary couples of vortices slowly rotating in opposite directions owing to hydrodynamic nonlinearity. The parameters of vortices are measured using a new method, based on tracking disk-shaped island defects. The horizontal motion occurs only when the amplitude of acoustic pressure exceeds threshold value, which can be explained by Bingham-like behavior of the smectic film. The measurements above threshold are in a good agreement with existing theoretical predictions. We have demonstrated experimentally that in-plane flow is well controlled by changing the acoustic pressure, excitation frequency and geometry of the film. The observations open a way to use the phenomenon in various applications.

Abstract:The director fields adopted by nematic liquid crystals (LCs) that are confined by the surface to form long, thin droplets are investigated using polarising optical microscopy. Samples are produced by de-wetting of the LC on a surface patterned with alternating high-surface energy and low-surface energy stripes of 10-30 mu m width. The droplets obtained are expected to adopt a profile which is that of a longitudinal section of a cylinder and, as this suggests, the director fields observed are variants in the case where the LC is constrained in a cylindrical capillary or fibre. Hence, when there is normal anchoring at the air interface, the textures observed are related to the well-known escaped radial texture (for the nematic LC mixture E7) or plane polar texture (for the LC mixture MLC6609). More surprising is the observation that the nematic LC mixture MLC7023, which is anchored in a planar or tilted manner at the air interface, also gives what appears to be an escaped radial director field. As an exploration of the possibility of using these systems in creating sensors, the effects of adding a chiral dopant and of adding water to the substrates are also investigated.

Abstract:We study photo-activated nonlinear deformation of periodic polydomain glassy nematic coatings on soft elastic substrates. The director fields are piecewise constant with rank-1 connection at the domain boundaries and form regular arrays of disclinations of different charges at the junctions. Based on numerical simulations, we show that conical depression and elevation appear at the positive and negative disclinations respectively. The phenomenon is attributed to bend of the coating controlled by interfacial shear force, and the mechanism can be utilized to create various novel surface topographies which have not been reported previously. Although our exploration is concerned with the theoretical aspect, the results may inspire future experimentation and provide insights for designing photo-switchable surfaces.
Texture and shape of two-dimensional domains of nematic liquid crystal

Abstract:We present a generalized approach to compute the shape and internal structure of two-dimensional nematic domains. By using conformal mappings, we are able to compute the director field for a given domain shape that we choose from a rich class, which includes drops with large and small aspect ratios, and sharp domain tips as well as smooth ones. Results are assembled in a phase diagram that for given domain size, surface tension, anchoring strength, and elastic constant shows the transitions from a homogeneous to a bipolar director field, from circular to elongated droplets, and from sharp to smooth domain tips. We find a previously unaccounted regime, where the drop is nearly circular, the director field bipolar and the tip rounded. We also find that bicircular director fields, with foci that lie outside the domain, provide a remarkably accurate description of the optimal director field for a large range of values of the various shape parameters.

Dancing vortices in a driven nematic liquid crystal cell: Theory and experiment

Abstract:The interaction of light beams with helical defects in optical materials generates optical vortices. Understanding and manipulating the dynamics of helical defects allows for the creation of versatile sources of optical vortex beams. Using a magnetic ring on a nematic liquid crystal cell, we trapped helical defects identified as matter vortices. We observe oscillatory rotating and beating matter vortices by applying a low-frequency voltage. Experimentally, we determine the region of parameters where these vortices are observed. The amplitude of oscillatory rotating vortices decays with the inverse of the voltage frequency. We propose an adequate amplitude equation, which allows us to describe the vortex dynamics; theoretical findings have a qualitative agreement with the experimental observations.

Abstract:Significance The devices of the portable computing revolution are being made possible by nematic liquid crystal display (LCD) technology. The optical changes viewed in a dynamic LCD image are based on reorienting molecules by coupling electronically generated electric fields to molecular dielectric anisotropy. This takes place in appropriate fluid electro-optic structures stabilized by nonpolar orientational coupling of molecules to surfaces. The recent observation of ferroelectric nematics having spontaneous macroscopic electric polarization density has introduced a much stronger polar coupling of electric field to molecular reorientation in nematics. This development opens opportunities for advanced electro-optics, but these will require polar control of molecular orientation by surfaces. The generation of polar-structured surfaces and their coupling to nematic polarity is demonstrated in this paper.
