Abstract:Low phosphate (Pi) availability and high aluminum (Al) toxicity constitute two major plant mineral nutritional stressors that limit plant productivity on acidic soils. Advances toward the identification of genes and signaling networks that are involved in both stresses in model plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana and rice (Oryza sativa), and in other plants as well have revealed that some factors such as organic acids (OAs), cell wall properties, phytohormones, and iron (Fe) homeostasis are interconnected with each other. Moreover, OAs are involved in recruiting of many plant-growth-promoting bacteria that are able to secrete both OAs and phosphatases to increase Pi availability and decrease Al toxicity. In this review paper, we summarize these mutual mechanisms by which plants deal with both Al toxicity and P starvation, with emphasis on OA secretion regulation, plant-growth-promoting bacteria, transcription factors, transporters, hormones, and cell wall-related kinases in the context of root development and root system architecture remodeling that plays a determinant role in improving P use efficiency and Al resistance on acidic soils.

Abstract:The growth and development of plants require 14 essential mineral nutrient elements, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, iron, etc. Nevertheless, the bioavailability of these elements varies greatly in the different types of soils. In order to adapt to nutrient-deficient environment, plants must sense the changes of external and internal mineral nutrient concentrations, and generate physiological and morphological responses via a series of signal transduction events, to facilitate the nutrient uptake and utilization. Ethylene is an essential gaseous plant hormone, and plays pivotal roles in many aspects of the plant life cycle. In recent years,accumulating studies have shown that ethylene also plays an important part in regulating plant responses to various nutrient deficiency stresses. Here, we comprehensively summarized the molecular mechanisms of ethylene regulating different nutritional stress responses directly or synergistically with other plant hormones/chemical signaling molecules, and gave an outlook for the future research.

Abstract:The low mobility of phosphorus in soil cause low concentration of its assimilable form phosphate (Pi), which is often a limiting factor for crop growth in agriculture. Developing cultivars with improved Pi up-take efifciency is essential for the yield and sustainability of agriculture. In this review, we presented the mech-anisms on phosphate signaling and homeostasis. Based on this understanding, we further introduced several successful examples in engineering improvement of phosphorus uptake efifciency in rice, which supplied very important cues for other crop improvement.

Abstract:Potassium is essential for plant growth and development and stress adaptation. The maintenance of potassium homeostasis involves a series of potassium channels and transporters, which promote the movement of potassium ions (K+) across cell membranes and exhibit complex expression patterns and regulatory mechanisms. Rice is a major food crop in China. The low utilization rate of potassium fertilizer limits the yield and quality of rice. Elucidating the molecular mechanisms of potassium absorption, transport, and utilization is critical in improving potassium utilization efficiency in rice. Although some K+ transporter genes have been identified from rice, research on the regulatory network is still in its infancy. Therefore, this review summarizes the relevant information on K+ channels and transporters in rice, covering the absorption of K+ in the roots, transport to the shoots, the regulation pathways, the relationship between K+ and the salt tolerance of rice, and the synergistic regulation of potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus signals. The related research on rice potassium nutrition has been comprehensively reviewed, the existing research foundation and the bottleneck problems to be solved in this field have been clarified, and the follow-up key research directions have been pointed out to provide a theoretical framework for the cultivation of potassium-efficient rice.

Abstract:K(superscript +) plays an important role in life of plants. K(superscript +) transporters are generally composed of high-affinity and low-affinity two part. On molecular level, high-affinity uptake are mainly carried out by K(superscript +) transporters belonging to KUP/HAK/KT and HKT families. K(superscript +) channel proteins belonging to Shaker and KCO families mainly function in low-affinity uptake. AKT1 and HAK5 along with their homologous genes play a balance-holding role in K(superscript +) uptake and transport of higher plants. The regulation of KUP/HAK/KT families mainly occurs on transcription level and the regulation of K(superscript +) channel proteins is mainly a post-translation regulation. Protein kinases regulate potassium channel activity through phosphorylated K(superscript +) channel proteins to change K(superscript +) uptake in plants. The paper summarizes the latest research advances about K(superscript +) uptake and transport as well as their regulation and envisages the research prospect.

Abstract:As one of the most important mineral nutrient elements, potassium (K(+)) participates in many plant physiological processes and determines the yield and quality of crop production. In this review, we summarize K(+) signaling processes and K(+) transport regulation in higher plants, especially in plant responses to K(+)-deficiency stress. Plants perceive external K(+) fluctuations and generate the initial K(+) signal in root cells. This signal is transduced into the cytoplasm and encoded as Ca(2+) and reactive oxygen species signaling. K(+)-deficiency-induced signals are subsequently decoded by cytoplasmic sensors, which regulate the downstream transcriptional and posttranslational responses. Eventually, plants produce a series of adaptive events in both physiological and morphological alterations that help them survive K(+) deficiency.

Abstract:Potassium is an essential mineral element in cytolist for plant growth and development. Plants absorb potassium through potassium channels or transporters. There are 4 potassium transporters families, among which KUP/HAK/KT families have the largest family members and received most thorough studies. Its members are kinds of transmembrane protein, which exist on plant plasma or tonoplast and have high affinity with K+. KUP/HAK/KT transporter not only play roles in plant absorbing and transporting K+, but also take part in adjusting plant growth and development. This paper expounded the research progress on classification, tissue localization, physiological function and expression regulation of the KUP/HAK/KT family, so as to provide theoretical references for studying the mechanism of plant potassium absorption.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N), potassium (K), and phosphorus (P) are essential macronutrients for plant growth and development, and their availability affects crop yield. Compared with N, the relatively low availability of K and P in soils limits crop production and thus threatens food security and agricultural sustainability. Improvement of plant nutrient utilization efficiency (NUE) provides a potential route to overcome the effects of K and P deficiencies. Investigation of the molecular mechanisms underlying how plants sense, absorb, transport, and use K and P is an important prerequisite to improve crop NUE. In this review, we summarize current understanding of K and P transport and signaling in plants, mainly taking Arabidopsis thaliana and rice (Oryza sativa) as examples. Abstract:Potassium plays a key role in the activity and development of plants.Potassium transportation in plants can be divided into two parts,high affinity and low affinity.At the molecular level,genes of KUP/HAK/KT and HKT families are essential for high affinity absorbtion,while K~+ channel of Shaker and KCO families are responsible for low affinity activity.KAT1 and AKT1 are the first K~+ channel genes cloned in plant,while HKT1 is the first K~+ carrier gene cloned in wheat.K~+ is also essential for the development of cotton(Gossypium hirsutum).The potassium transporter GhKT1 in cotton is critical for the process of cotton fiber elongation.In general,K~+ channels function in millimol K~+ concentration.However,AtAKT1,a member of Shaker family,can take its role in a wide range of external K~+ concentrations,from micro-mole to milli-mole.Several independent experiments related to AtAKT1 knockout supported that AtAKT1 palyed a key role in Arabidopsis K~+ nutrition.The cloning and functional analysis of AtAKT1 homologe genes,such as,SKT1,LKT1,MKT1,TaAKT1 and OsAKT1,indicated that AKT1 was essential for potassium uptaking and transportation in plant.In recent studies,the investigation of the changes of transcriptional level in response to the external K~+ availability was largely used as a method to identify the functions of both K~+ channels and transporters.AtAKT1 could be activated by K~+ shortage,however,no transcriptional levels have been detected either using Northern Blot Analysis or Micro-array,providing that the regulations of AtAKT1 occur at post-transcriptional level.AtKC1,a member of Shaker family,could not function as a channel protein alone,but could physically interact with AtAKT1.In response to K~+ deficency,AtKC1 could be temporally activated.Therefore,it was believed that the regulation of AtAKT1 was largely through the modulation of AtKC1.In Arabidopsis,genes from KUP/HAK/KT family did not likely answer low potassium stress at transcriptional level except AtHAK5,which was strongly induced by K~+ deficiency.During this process,NH_4~+ might play some roles in the signaling of plant K~+ status.Members from HKT family facilitated Na~+/Na~+ or K~+/Na~+ symport.Therefore,these transporters might take some roles in Na~+ uptake and recirculation.The comlicated molecular mechanisms of K~+ uptake and transportation enabled plant to survive in the changing environment.

Abstract:Phosphate is one of the indispensable elements for plant growth and development. The uptake of phosphate from soils and translocation between organs and subcellular compartments require a series of phos-phate transporters with phosphate transport activity. In recent years, with the rapid development of molecular biology and functional genomics technology, researchers have made great progress in clarifying the function of phosphate transporters and its molecular regulation mechanism. In this paper, focused on Arabidopsis and rice, we reviewed the recent progress on the discovery of phosphate transporters, their functions and molecular regu-lation mechanisms. It would provide reference for improving phosphorus absorption and utilization efficiency in crop breeding.

Abstract:Potassium (K), one of the mineral elements essential for plant growth and development, is important for plant photosynthesis regulation. Here, we focus on the two pivotal factors, i.e., leaf area and net photosyn-thetic rate, that play vital roles in regulating whole plant photosynthesis. In this article, we ifrstly reviewed the physiological basis in K regulation of leaf area components and photosynthetic limitations (stomatal conduc-tance, mesophyll conductance and biochemical limitations). Then, the relationship between photosynthetic lim-itations and leaf K concentration was analyzed. Knowledge gaps are also identiifed.

Abstract:Nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium are essential nutrients for plant growth and development. However, their contents in soils are limited so that crop production needs to invest a lot for fertilizer supply. To explore the genetic potentialities of crops (or plants) for their nutrient utilization efficiency has been an important research task for many years. In fact, a number of evidences have revealed that plants, during their evolution, have developed many morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular adaptation mechanisms for acquiring nitrate, phosphate and potassium under stress conditions. Recent discoveries of many transporters and channels for nitrate, phosphate and potassium uptake have opened up opportunities to study the molecular regulatory mechanisms for acquisition of these nutrients. This review aims to briefly discuss the genes and gene families for these transporters and channels. In addition, the functions and regulation of some important transporters and channels are particularly emphasized.

Abstract:Potassium is an essential macronutrient that has been partly overshadowed in root science by nitrogen and phosphorus. The current boom in potassium-related studies coincides with an emerging awareness of its importance in plant growth, metabolic functions, stress tolerance, and efficient agriculture. In this review, we summarized recent progress in understanding the role of K+ in root growth, development of root system architecture, cellular functions, and specific plant responses to K+ shortage. K+ transport is crucial for its physiological role. A wide range of K+ transport proteins has developed during evolution and acquired specific functions in plants. There is evidence linking K+ transport with cell expansion, membrane trafficking, auxin homeostasis, cell signaling, and phloem transport. This places K+ among important general regulatory factors of root growth. K+ is a rather mobile element in soil, so the absence of systemic and localized root growth response has been accepted. However, recent research confirms both systemic and localized growth response in Arabidopsis thaliana and highlights K+ uptake as a crucial mechanism for plant stress response. K+-related regulatory mechanisms, K+ transporters, K+ acquisition efficiency, and phenotyping for selection of K+ efficient plants/cultivars are highlighted in this review.

Abstract:Modern agriculture relies on mineral fertilization. Unlike other major macronutrients, potassium (K+) is not incorporated into organic matter but remains as soluble ion in the cell sap contributing up to 10% of the dry organic matter. Consequently, K+ constitutes a chief osmoticum to drive cellular expansion and organ movements, such as stomata aperture. Moreover, K+ transport is critical for the control of cytoplasmic and luminal pH in endosomes, regulation of membrane potential, and enzyme activity. Not surprisingly, plants have evolved a large ensemble of K+ transporters with defined functions in nutrient uptake by roots, storage in vacuoles, and ion translocation between tissues and organs. This review describes critical transport proteins governing K+ nutrition, their regulation, and coordinated activity, and summarizes our current understanding of signaling pathways activated by K+ starvation.

Abstract:Essential nutrient elements for plants, including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and zinc (Zn), are involved in regulation of many physiological and biochemical processes in plants, which are critical factors directly determining yield and quality of crops. However, excessive subcellular accumulation of these essential nutrient elements will be toxic for plant cells or the whole plant. Thus, uptake and transport processes of these nutrients must be tightly regulated at the cellular level. Focused on Arabidopsis thaliana and Oryza sativa, this review briefly summarized the types, physical and chemical properties of nutrient element transporters, and elaborated their biological functions and action mechanisms in higher plants, including N transporter families (NPF, NRT2, CLC, SLAC/SLAH, and AMT), P transporter families (PHT1, PHT2, PHT3, PHT4, and PHT5), K transporter families (KT/HAK/KUP, HKT, CHX, and KEA), and Zn transporter families (ZIP, CDF, and P1B-type ATPase). Endocytosis from the plasma membrane (PM) is an important route for uptake of extracellular materials and regulation of PM-resident receptors or transporters, so we introduced potential roles of transporter endocytosis in uptake and transport of nutrient elements in plant cells. In the end, we made prospects of future studies on functional roles and regulation mechanisms of transporters, providing new ideas and strategies for efficient utilization of nutrients and genetic improvement of quality in crops.

Abstract:The uptake of ammonium, nitrate, phosphorus, and potassium ions by roots is mediated by specific ion transporter or channel proteins, and protein phosphorylation regulation events occurring on these proteins and their regulators determine their ultimate activity. Elucidating the mechanism by which protein phosphorylation modification regulates nutrient uptake will advance plant breeding for high nutrientuse efficiency. In this review, it is concluded that the root nutrient absorption system is composed of several, but not all, members of a specific ion transporter or channel family. Under nutrient-starvation conditions, protein phosphorylation-based regulation of these proteins and associated transcription factors increases ion transporter- or channel-mediated nutrient uptake capacity via direct function activity enhancement, allowing more protein trafficking to the plasma membrane, by strengthening the interaction of transporters and channels with partner proteins, by increasing their protein stability, and by transcriptional activation. Under excessive nutrient conditions, protein phosphorylation-based regulation suppresses nutrient uptake by reversing these processes. Strengthening phosphorylation regulation items that increase nutrient absorption and weakening phosphorylation modification items that are not conducive to nutrient absorption show potential as strategies for increasing nutrient use efficiency. & COPY; 2023 Crop Science Society of China and Institute of Crop Science, CAAS. Abstract:Agricultural production continues to be constrained by a number of biotic and abiotic factors that can reduce crop yield quantity and quality. Potassium (K) is an essential nutrient that affects most of the biochemical and physiological processes that influence plant growth and metabolism. It also contributes to the survival of plants exposed to various biotic and abiotic stresses. The following review focuses on the emerging role of K in defending against a number of biotic and abiotic stresses, including diseases, pests, drought, salinity, cold and frost and waterlogging. The availability of K and its effects on plant growth, anatomy, morphology and plant metabolism are discussed. The physiological and molecular mechanisms of K function in plant stress resistance are reviewed. This article also evaluates the potential for improving plant stress resistance by modifying K fertilizer inputs and highlights the future needs for research about the role of K in agriculture.

Abstract:Potassium (K) is one of the essential major plant nutrients. Its importance in agriculture has increased with intensive agriculture as well as deficiency occurring in crop plants. Global population is increasing at a quantum rate, which pushes the targeted yield to higher levels for mitigating the food demand of hungry mouths. Production of more food material from limited land is a challenge for the researcher and it aggravates nutrient deficiency, due to more uptake of plant nutrients, especially K, by high-yielding crop varieties. Among plant nutrients, deficiency of K limits the crop growth and reduces the crop yield. The source of K is native or via various replenishment paths, i.e. crop residue, microbial biomass and a range of waste materials. Researchers mentioning the wide gap between the addition of K and removal during crop production are highlighting the challenge to maintain a sustainable crop yield. The nutrient balance in the soil system is also affected by the quantity of nutrient that is taken up, raising nutrient storage in the soil–plant–microbe system, and how much is recycled by crop residues. The use of potassium-solubilizing microorganisms (KSMs) can increase the K level in the soil solution and ultimately increase plant growth and development. The main mechanisms of KSMs are acidolysis, chelation, exchange reactions, complexolysis and organic acid production in the soil. K fertilizers cost much more than other fertilizers, so use of KSMs in agricultural crop production can be a sustainable option for enhancing in situ K availability from the fixed sink of agricultural soils.
