Abstract:Two variations of the dominating set problem are presented, both of which have corresponding application background. In this paper, we prove the decision problems of the two variations are NPC. Furthermore, the approximation algorithms for their corresponding optimization problems as well as their approximation ratios are also given.

Abstract:Connected Dominating Set is widely used as virtual backbone in wireless networks to improve network performance and optimize routing protocols. Based on special characteristics of ad-hoc and sensor networks, we usually use unit disk graph to represent the corresponding geometrical structures, where each node has a unit transmission range and two nodes are said to be adjacent if the distance between them is less than 1. Since every Maximal Independent Set (MIS) is a dominating set and it is easy to construct, we can firstly find an MIS and then connect it into a Connected Dominating Set (CDS). Therefore, the ratio to compare the size of an MIS with a minimum CDS becomes a theoretical upper bound for approximation algorithms to compute CDS. In our paper, with the help of Voronoi diagram and Euler's formula, we improved this upper bound, so that improved the approximations based on this relation.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a variant of dominating set problem, i.e., the total dominating set problem. Given an undirected graph G=(V,E), a subset of vertices T⊆V is called a total dominating set if every vertex in V is adjacent to at least one vertex in T. Based on LP relaxation techniques, this paper gives a distributed approximation algorithm for the total dominating set problem in general graphs. The presented algorithm obtains a fractional total dominating set that is, at most, k(1+Δ1k)Δ1k times the size of the optimal solution to this problem, where k is a positive integer and Δ is the maximum degree of G. The running time of this algorithm is constant communication rounds under the assumption of a synchronous communication model.
New Approximations for Minimum-Weighted Dominating Sets and Minimum-Weighted Connected Dominating Sets on Unit Disk Graphs

Abstract:Given a node-weighted graph, the minimum-weighted dominating set (MWDS) problem is to find a minimum-weighted vertex subset such that, for any vertex, it is contained in this subset or it has a neighbor contained in this set. And the minimum-weighted connected dominating set (MWCDS) problem is to find a MWDS such that the graph induced by this subset is connected. In this paper, we study these two problems on a unit disk graph. A (4 +ε)-approximation algorithm for an MWDS based on a dynamic programming algorithm for a Min-Weight Chromatic Disk Cover is presented. Meanwhile, we also propose a (1 +ε)-approximation algorithm for the connecting part by showing a polynomial-time approximation scheme for a Node-Weighted Steiner Tree problem when the given terminal set is c-local and thus obtain a (5 +ε)-approximation algorithm for an MWCDS.
Construction K-Dominating Set with Multiple Relaying Technique in Wireless Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract:The (k, r)-dominating set problem, (k, r)-DS, is defined as the problem of selecting a minimum cardinality vertex set D (dominating nodes, also referred as cluster-heads) of a graph G=(V, E), such that every vertex u not in D is in r hops from at least k (multiple domination parameter) vertices in D. In mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), computing dominating set should be distributed, because the topology may change frequently. In this paper, we present a distributed clustering algorithm based on MPR technique, named MPR-KD, to addressing redundancy of dominating nodes in 1-hop for MANETs. 1-CDS is still supported in MPR-KD and extensive simulations are conducted to compare this algorithm with another distributed algorithm DKR. Simulation results show that the new algorithm outperforms DKR in terms of number of dominating nodes, both in dense and sparse networks.
Disjoint Dominating and 2-Dominating Sets in Graphs: Hardness and Approximation results

Abstract:A set $D \subseteq V$ of a graph $G=(V, E)$ is a dominating set of $G$ if each vertex $v\in V\setminus D$ is adjacent to at least one vertex in $D,$ whereas a set $D_2\subseteq V$ is a $2$-dominating (double dominating) set of $G$ if each vertex $v\in V \setminus D_2$ is adjacent to at least two vertices in $D_2.$ A graph $G$ is a $DD_2$-graph if there exists a pair ($D, D_2$) of dominating set and $2$-dominating set of $G$ which are disjoint. In this paper, we solve some open problems posed by M.Miotk, J.~Topp and P.{Ż}yli{ń}ski (Disjoint dominating and 2-dominating sets in graphs, Discrete Optimization, 35:100553, 2020) by giving approximation algorithms for the problem of determining a minimal spanning $DD_2$-graph of minimum size (Min-$DD_2$) with an approximation ratio of $3$; a minimal spanning $DD_2$-graph of maximum size (Max-$DD_2$) with an approximation ratio of $3$; and for the problem of adding minimum number of edges to a graph $G$ to make it a $DD_2$-graph (Min-to-$DD_2$) with an $O(\log n)$ approximation ratio. Furthermore, we prove that Min-$DD_2$ and Max-$DD_2$ are APX-complete for graphs with maximum degree $4$. We also show that Min-$DD_2$ and Max-$DD_2$ are approximable within a factor of $1.8$ and $1.5$ respectively, for any $3$-regular graph. Finally, we show the inapproximability result of Max-Min-to-$DD_2$ for bipartite graphs, that this problem can not be approximated within $n^{\frac{1}{6}-\varepsilon}$ for any $\varepsilon >0,$ unless P=NP.

Efficient Construction of Dominating Set in Wireless Networks

Abstract:Considering a communication topology of a wireless network modeled by a graph where an edge exists between two nodes if they are within each other's communication range. A subset U of nodes is a dominating set if each node is either in U or adjacent to some node in U. Assume each node has a disparate communication range and is associated with a positive weight, we present a randomized algorithm to find a min-weight dominating set. Considering any orientation of the graph where an arc uv exists if the node v lies in u's communication range. A subset U of nodes is a strongly dominating set if every node except U has both in-neighbor(s) and out-neighbor(s) in U. We present a polynomial-time algorithm to find a strongly dominating set of size at most (2+ϵ) times of the optimum. We also investigate another related problem called K-Coverage. Given are a set D of disks with positive weight and a set P of nodes. Assume all input nodes lie below a horizontal line l and all input disks lie above this line l in the plane. The objective is to find a min-weight subset D'⊆ D of disks such that each node is covered at least K disks in D'. We propose a novel two-approximation algorithm for this problem.
Fine-Grained Complexity of Multiple Domination and Dominating Patterns in Sparse Graphs

Abstract:The study of domination in graphs has led to a variety of domination problems studied in the literature. Most of these follow the following general framework: Given a graph $G$ and an integer $k$, decide if there is a set $S$ of $k$ vertices such that (1) some inner property $\phi(S)$ (e.g., connectedness) is satisfied, and (2) each vertex $v$ satisfies some domination property $\rho(S, v)$ (e.g., there is an $s\in S$ that is adjacent to $v$). Since many real-world graphs are sparse, we seek to determine the optimal running time of such problems in both the number $n$ of vertices and the number $m$ of edges in $G$. While the classic dominating set problem admits a rather limited improvement in sparse graphs (Fischer, Künnemann, Redzic SODA'24), we show that natural variants studied in the literature admit much larger speed-ups, with a diverse set of possible running times. Specifically, we obtain conditionally optimal algorithms for: 1) $r$-Multiple $k$-Dominating Set (each vertex must be adjacent to at least $r$ vertices in $S$): If $r\le k-2$, we obtain a running time of $(m/n)^{r} n^{k-r+o(1)}$ that is conditionally optimal assuming the 3-uniform hyperclique hypothesis. In sparse graphs, this fully interpolates between $n^{k-1\pm o(1)}$ and $n^{2\pm o(1)}$, depending on $r$. Curiously, when $r=k-1$, we obtain a randomized algorithm beating $(m/n)^{k-1} n^{1+o(1)}$ and we show that this algorithm is close to optimal under the $k$-clique hypothesis. 2) $H$-Dominating Set ($S$ must induce a pattern $H$). We conditionally settle the complexity of three such problems: (a) Dominating Clique ($H$ is a $k$-clique), (b) Maximal Independent Set of size $k$ ($H$ is an independent set on $k$ vertices), (c) Dominating Induced Matching ($H$ is a perfect matching on $k$ vertices).

Abstract:The dominating set problem (DSP) is one of the most famous problems in combinatorial optimization. It is defined as follows. For a given graph G=(V,E) , a dominating set of G is a subset S⊆V such that every vertex in V∖S is adjacent to at least one vertex in S . Furthermore, the DSP is the problem of finding a minimum-size dominating set and the corresponding minimum size, the domination number of G . In this, work we investigate a variant of the DSP, the super dominating set problem (SDSP), which has attracted much attention during the last years. A dominating set S is called a super dominating set of G , if for every vertex u∈S ̄=V∖S , there exists a v∈S such that N(v)∩S ̄=N(v)∖S={u} . Analogously, the SDSP is to find a minimum-size super dominating set, and the corresponding minimum size, the super domination number of G . The decision variants of both the DSP and the SDSP have been shown to be NP -hard. In this paper, we present tight bounds for the super domination number of the neighbourhood corona product, r -clique sum, and the Hajós sum of two graphs. Additionally, we present infinite families of graphs attaining our bounds. Finally, we give the exact number of minimum size super dominating sets for some graph classes. In particular, the number of super dominating sets for cycles has quite surprising properties as it varies between values of the set {4,n,2n,5n2−10n8} based on nmod4 .

Abstract:Nine variations of the concept of domination in a simple graph are identified as fundamental domination concepts, and a unified approach is introduced for studying them. For each variation, the minimum cardinality of a subset of dominating elements is the corresponding fundamental domination number. It is observed that, for each nontrivial connected graph, at most five of these nine numbers can be different, and inequalities between these five numbers are given. Finally, these fundamental dominations are interpreted in terms of the total graph of the given graph, a concept introduced by the second author in 1965. It is argued that the very first domination concept, defined by O. Ore in 1962 and under a different name by C. Berge in 1958, deserves to be called the most fundamental of graph dominations.

Reducing Dominating Sets in Graphs

Abstract:A dominating set of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a subset of vertices $S\subseteq V$ such that every vertex $v\in V\setminus S$ has at least one neighbor in set $S$. The corresponding optimization problem is known to be NP-hard. The best known polynomial time approximation algorithm for the problem separates the solution process in two stages applying first a fast greedy algorithm to obtain an initial dominating set, and then it uses an iterative procedure to reduce (purify) this dominating set. The purification stage turned out to be practically efficient. Here we further strengthen the purification stage presenting four new purification algorithms. All four purification procedures outperform the earlier purification procedure. The algorithms were tested for over 1300 benchmark problem instances. Compared to the known upper bounds, the obtained solutions were about 7 times better. Remarkably, for the 500 benchmark instances for which the optimum is known, the optimal solutions were obtained for 46.33\% of the tested instances, whereas the average error for the remaining instances was about 1.01.

Abstract:The domination problem and three of its variants (total domination, 2-domination, and secure domination) are considered. These problems have various real-world applications, including error correction codes, ad hoc routing for wireless networks, and social network analysis, among others. However, each of them is NP-hard to solve to provable optimality, making fast heuristics for these problems desirable. There are a wealth of highly developed heuristics and approximation algorithms for the domination problem; however, such heuristics are much less common for variants of the domination problem. We redress this gap in the literature by proposing a novel implementation of the cross-entropy method that can be applied to any sensible variant of domination. We present results from experiments that demonstrate that this approach can produce good results in an efficient manner even for larger graphs and that it works roughly as well for any of the domination variants considered.

Abstract:Domination game [SIAM J.\ Discrete Math.\ 24 (2010) 979--991] and total domination game [Graphs Combin.\ 31 (2015) 1453--1462] are by now well established games played on graphs by two players, named Dominator and Staller. In this paper, Z-domination game, L-domination game, and LL-domination game are introduced as natural companions of the standard domination games. Versions of the Continuation Principle are proved for the new games. It is proved that in each of these games the outcome of the game, which is a corresponding graph invariant, differs by at most one depending whether Dominator or Staller starts the game. The hierarchy of the five domination games is established. The invariants are also bounded with respect to the (total) domination number and to the order of a graph. Values of the three new invariants are determined for paths up to a small constant independent from the length of a path. Several open problems and a conjecture are listed. The latter asserts that the L-domination game number is not greater than $6/7$ of the order of a graph.

Abstract:This paper introduces the concept of proper 2-dominating sets in graphs, providing a comprehensive characterisation of graphs that possess such sets. We give the necessary and sufficient conditions for a graph to have a proper 2-dominating set. Graphs with proper dominating sets can have a symmetric structure. Moreover, we estimate the bounds of the proper 2-domination number in the graphs with respect to the 2-domination and 3-domination numbers. We show that the cardinality of γ2 ̄-set is greater by one at most than the cardinality of γ2-set.

Abstract:The problem of minimizing the maximum lateness on a single machine with family setups is considered.To solve the problem, dominance property is studied and then introduced into the tabu search（TS） algorithm.With the dominance property, most unpromising neighbors can be excluded from the neighborhood, which makes the search process always focus on the most promising areas of the solution space.The proposed algorithms are tested both on the randomly generated problems and on the real-life problems.Computational results show that the proposed TS algorithm outperforms the best existing algorithm and can solve the real-life problems in about 1.3 on average.
Generating Dominating Sets Using Locally-Defined Centrality Measures

Abstract:The dominating set problem has many practical applications but is well-known to be NP-hard. Therefore, there is a need for efficient approximation algorithms, especially in applications such as ad hoc wireless networks. Most distributed algorithms proposed in the literature assume that each node has knowledge of the network structure. We propose a distributed approximation algorithm that uses two rounds of communication, and where each node has only local information, both in terms of network structure and dominating set assignment. First, each node calculates a local centrality measure to determine whether it is part of the dominating set $D$. The second round guarantees $D$ is a dominating set by adding any non-dominated nodes. We compare several centrality measures and show that the Shapley value, introduced in game theory, is theoretically motivated and performs well in practice on several synthetic and real-world networks.

Abstract:Interval-valued data exist in many practical situations, due to various factors such as random error, incompletion or inaccuracy. In rough set theory, interval-valued decision systems can be viewed as generalized models of single-valued decision systems. In this paper, from the viewpoint of interval variable, we propose a new dominance relation based on probability distribution. Consequently, dominance-based rough set model for interval-valued ordered decision systems is constructed with the proposed dominance relation. Moreover, the proposed model examines attribute reduction in interval-valued ordered decision systems.

Abstract:The dominating set reconfiguration problem is defined as determining, for a given dominating set problem and two among its feasible solutions, whether one is reachable from the other via a sequence of feasible solutions subject to a certain adjacency relation. This problem is PSPACE-complete in general. The concept of the dominating set is known to be quite useful for analyzing wireless networks, social networks, and sensor networks. We develop an approach to solve the dominating set reconfiguration problem based on Answer Set Programming (ASP). Our declarative approach relies on a high-level ASP encoding, and both the grounding and solving tasks are delegated to an ASP-based combinatorial reconfiguration solver. To evaluate the effectiveness of our approach, we conduct experiments on a newly created benchmark set.

Abstract:Steiner connected dominating set (SCDS) is a generalization of the famous connected dominating set problem, where only a specified set of required vertices has to be dominated by a connected dominating set, and known to be NP-hard. This paper firstly modifies the SCDS algorithm of Guha and Khuller and achieves a worst case approximation ratio of (2+1/(m−1))H(min (D, k))+O(1), which outperforms the previous best result (c+1)H(min (D, k))+O(1) in the case of mge 1+1/(c−1), where c is the best approximation ratio for Steiner tree, D is the maximum degree of the graph, k is the cardinality of the set of required vertices, m is an optional integer satisfying 0≤ m ≤ min (D, k) and H is the harmonic function. This paper also proposes another approximation algorithm which is based on a greedy approach. The second algorithm can establish a worst case approximation ratio of 2ln (min (D, k))+O(1), which can also be improved to 2ln k if the optimal solution is greater than $\frac{c\dot{e^{2c+1}}}{2(c+1)}$.
On the complexity of Dominating Set for graphs with fixed diameter

Abstract:A set $S\subseteq V$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a dominating set if each vertex has a neighbor in $S$ or belongs to $S$. Dominating Set is the problem of deciding, given a graph $G$ and an integer $k\geq 1$, if $G$ has a dominating set of size at most $k$. It is well known that this problem is $\mathsf{NP}$-complete even for claw-free graphs. We give a complexity dichotomy for Dominating Set for the class of claw-free graphs with diameter $d$. We show that the problem is $\mathsf{NP}$-complete for every fixed $d\ge 3$ and polynomial time solvable for $d\le 2$. To prove the case $d=2$, we show that Minimum Maximal Matching can be solved in polynomial time for $2K_2$-free graphs.
