Abstract:Livestock farms are potential sources of bioaerosols and air pollutants which are closely related to human health. In winter 2009, a field measurement was conducted at a pig farm in Pearl River Delta (PRD) to preliminarily evaluate the concentrations of cultivable airborne bacteria and other air pollutants, including carbonyls, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matters, carbonaceous aerosol and heavy metals. Regardless of sampling methods (six-stage viable sampler or AGI-30 sampler), the diurnal variation of cultivable airborne bacteria was almost the same: maximum concentration in the morning, minimum value at noon and an increasing trend in the afternoon. For the samples collected by six-stage viable sampler, the concentrations in the morning, at noon and in the afternoon were 4.3 x 10(7) cfu/m(3), 1.4 x 10(7) cfu/m(3), and 3.5 x 10(7) cfu/m(3), respectively, while bacteria levels were 1.4 x 10(7) cfu/m(3), 0.5 x 10(7) cfu/m(3), and 0.73 x 10(7) cfu/m(3), respectively, for the samples collected by the AGI-30 sampler. The elevated level in the morning was due to the fact that most windows in the pig house were closed at night for the purpose of keeping pig house warm and safe. Around noon, the worker usually kept the exhaust fan in the pig house on for about 10 min, which diluted the concentration of cultivable airborne bacteria. It was found that the cultivable bacteria levels at upwind and downwind sites of the pig farm were 3.2 +/- 2.7 x 10(6) cfu/m(3) and 2.5 +/- 1.4 x 10(6) cfu/m(3) at the upwind and downwind sites, which were lower than the levels observed in the pig house (p < 0.05). The higher upwind levels and lower downwind concentrations may be attributed to the fact that the downwind site was close to a disinfection tank and a warehouse for disinfectant storage, and the upwind site was close to the pig house and the pig feed mill. Apart from bioaerosols, a few VOCs were detected in the pig farm, including chloromethane, vinyl chloride, 1,3-butadiene, bromomethane, benzene, m, p-xylene and toluene, which could be related to the usage of paint during the electric welding work. Moreover, carbonyls and heavy metals were all under detection limit in the pig house. The low formaldehyde level may be attributed to its reaction with ammonia in the pig house. Furthermore, the average concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in PM2.5 were 8.85 and 1.54 mu g/m(3), respectively. Good correlation between OC and EC indicated that they were from the same source in the pig house. Moderate correlation between cultivable airborne bacteria and PM2.5 implied that both airborne cultivable bacteria and find particles were mainly emitted from the pig house. At last, investigation found that temperature and relative humidity had little impact on the concentrations of cultivable bacteria during the sampling period.
