Abstract:Classification for Tropical Cyclone(TC)tracks is an important way to acquire TC′s characteristics and to conduct impact assessment. This paper is based on Joint Typhoon Warning Center(JTWC)best-track dataset between 1965—2009. A method is established for objective classification of tropical cyclone tracks over northwestern Pacific by K-means Clustering that takes into account such characteristic parameters as the position, intensity, path length, and direction of tropical cyclones. Seven clusters from classification are analyzed for comparison in terms of TC's generated position, lifespan, energy, active season, landfall, etc. These physical quantities are quite different among the clusters. From the trends in the last two decades, the frequency of western turning cluster(accounting for 21.3% of the total) increased, and its lifespan increased slightly, which differs from other clusters. The trend of annual total PDI(Power Dissipation Index)in each of the clusters is decided mostly by the change of intensity and frequency. The trends of total PDI in most clusters are consistent with that of intensity. In the cluster moving northwestern then turning and the cluster moving west-northwest in the open sea, the trends of total PDI are decided by frequency.
