Abstract:1.1.Oxygen consumption and body temperatures of 32 juvenile root voles (Microtus oeconomus) of different ages (in days) were measured at ambient temperatures (Ta) of 10, 20 and 30°C in order to study the postnatal development of thermoregulation.2.2.There were some difficulties in using Ricklefs' index of thermoregulatory ability (1968) for our results and a new index of homeothermy ability (I = 1 − b) where b is the slope of regression calculated from relation of Tb against Ta was presented. A detailed comparison of these two indexes has been made and some comments on this have been given.3.3.The results showed that the postnatal development of thermoregulation in root voles might be divided into three periods; (1) essentially poikilothermic period; (2) rapid shifting period from poikilothermy to homeothermy, and (3) essentially homeothermic period. The characteristics of each period in homeothermic ability, chemical thermoregulation, weight increase and opening of eyes has been discussed.
