Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an important component of solutions in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems through its influence on acidity, nutrient availability, and toxicity. DOM could enhance the apparent solubility of organic pollutants and alter adsorption-desorption equilibrium of organic pollutants on soil. The enhancement of organic pollutants desorption in the presence of DOM could facilitate the mobility of organic pollutants in soil. On the other hand, the sorption of DOM by solid sorbents in soil could also enhance the retention of DOM-associated organic pollutants in soil. Furthermore, as a photosensitizer, DOM could promote the photogradation of organic pollutants in soil. And under certain condition, DOM also affected the hydrolysis of organic pollutants in soil solution. The effects of DOM on environmental behaviors of organic pollutants in soils were related to the physico-chemical characteristics of organic pollutants, DOM, and soil.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter(DOM) is a group of compounds that have complex chemical structures and multiple interactions with their surrounding materials. More than one trillion tons of DOM are stocked in the world’s aquatic ecosystems. DOM is a very important part of aquatic ecosystem productivity and plays a crucial role in global carbon cycling. DOM has rich environmental behaviors and effects such as influencing the bioavailability of contaminants, serving as an important inducer of reactive oxygen species(ROS), and protecting aquatic organisms from the harm of dangerous ultraviolet radiation. There have been many systematic studies on the composition, structure, and sources of DOM because such studies are much easier to conduct than studies on the environmental behaviors and effects of DOM. Due to many factors, the research systems of DOM’s environmental behaviors and effects are still being developed and have become a hotspot of environmental science. This review paper focuses on some critical progress, problems, and trends of DOM’s environmental behaviors and effects in aquatic ecosystems, including mutual exchange mechanisms between DOM and particulate organic matter(POM) with influencing factors, photochemical behaviors of DOM especially inducing ROS, binding interactions between DOM and anthropogenic organic contaminants(AOC), interactions between DOM and microorganisms, effects of DOM on pollutants’ bioavailability, ecotoxicity, and ecological risks. Hopefully, this paper will contribute to a more systematic understanding of the DOM environmental behaviors and effects and to promoting further relevant studies.
Characterizing Dissolved Organic Matter Across a Riparian Soil–Water Interface: Preliminary Insights from a Molecular Level Perspective

Abstract:Riparian soils are an important source of dissolved organic matter (DOM) to their connected rivers. The transport of DOM from riparian soils to rivers exerts a significant impact on both terrestrial and aquatic organic matter cycles. However, few studies focused on the underlying changes in DOM composition and potential biogeochemical processes involved. By combining optical techniques and Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), here we show the variation in molecular composition between DOM in the riparian soil (S-DOM), submerged soil (SS-DOM), and river water (R-DOM) along a typical tributary of the Yangtze River. Variations in relative inputs of humic- and aromatic-like sourced DOM (R-DOM > S-DOM > SS-DOM) and protein-like sourced DOM (SS-DOM > S-DOM > R-DOM) were observed at both optical and molecular levels, indicating significant alterations in DOM composition during its transport. In particular, we have identified two preliminary mechanisms of DOM transport from soils to rivers at the molecular level by FT-ICR MS: (i) lower molecular weight (MW) (344 +/- 9 Da in average) and moderate aromatic (modified aromaticity index; AI(mod): 0.28 +/- 0.01 in average) DOM compounds are released to the river without modifications; (ii) moderate MW (370 +/- 1 Da in average) and less aromatic (AI(mod) : 0.25 +/- 0.01 in average) DOM compounds are produced (likely due to transformation or degradation of higher MW and aromatic DOM) and released to the river. Further incubation experiments suggested that DOM compounds associated with the first mechanism were more refractory (both bio- and photoresistant) than those of the second one. Therefore, we speculate that the first mechanism likely relates to the DOM transportation to the downstream, but the second mechanism mainly contributes to the in situ CO2 emissions in rivers. Our results (i) highlight the variation in DOM composition across the soil-river interface; (ii) confirm the preferential mobilization of specific DOM compounds from soils to rivers; and (iii) provide an avenue for further investigation of the mechanisms responsible for the observed changes. In particular, further studies are encouraged to investigate the spatial and temporal dynamics of DOM transport along the terrestrial-aquatic-continuum with different sources or composition of organic matter and under different hydrological scenarios.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an important and active component in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, while soil DOM plays an important role in the pedogenesis, mineral weathering, and translocation of pollutants in soils. It has become a hotspot in environment science, soil science and ecology. Soil DOM has important effects on the chemical and biological behaviors of heavy metals in soil-plant system, but its mechanism is not identified. The study on soil DOM in China was still in its initial stages, and most studies only reported that the activity of heavy metals in soils was affected by the DOM produced from organic fertilizer. This review is to summarize the recent literatures regarding the formation of soil DOM and its affecting factors, and the effect of soil DOM on the chemical and biological behaviors of heavy metals in soils. The main affecting mechanisms of soil DOM on behaviors of soil heavy metals were summarized as complexing with heavy metals, competing with metals for adsorption sites, and affecting soil pH value.
Anthropogenic Influences on Dissolved Organic Matter in Three Coastal Bays, North China

Abstract:Coastal bays bear anthropogenic influence strongly, and thus dissolved organic matter (DOM) in coastal bays, which is an important component of global carbon cycling, could be heavily affected by anthropogenic inputs. Utilizing absorbance, fluorescence spectroscopy, and stable carbon isotope (delta C-13), this study analyzed the characteristics and distribution of DOM in three coastal bays (Jiaozhou Bay, Sishili Bay, and Taozi Bay), located in North China. The results showed that there was always a high concentration of DOM near the river mouth in all three bays and the DOM concentration decreased along the salinity gradient in Jiaozhou Bay, indicating the riverine inputs are the main factor that causes the variation of DOM in these coastal bays. The effects of inflowing rivers on DOM in coastal bays differed with their watershed characteristics (i.e., agricultural/urban). In addition, humic-like DOM components were found to be positively correlated with the apparent oxygen utilization, suggesting microbial activities could contribute to the DOM in this region. There was generally a higher averaged concentration of fluorescent DOM in surface water than that in bottom water in Jiaozhou Bay. In contrast, higher humic-like DOM was found in bottom water than that in surface water in Sishili Bay and Taozi Bay, which could be attributed to aquaculture activities and biological production. Moreover, photodegradation/photobleaching, dumping, and sewage discharge had their effects on DOM in coastal bays. This study demonstrates that DOM in coastal bays is regulated by multiple sources (rivers, aquaculture, dumping, and sewage) and processes (biological production and photodegradation), and anthropogenic activities have their influences on optical and isotopic characteristics of DOM in coastal bays.
Molecular Composition of Exogenous Dissolved Organic Matter Regulates Dissimilatory Iron Reduction and Carbon Emissions in Paddy Soil

Abstract:Soil carbon (C) cycling under anoxic conditions is mechanistically linked to dissimilatory iron (Fe) reduction, which could be regulated by exogenous dissolved organic matter (DOM). However, the impact of complex exogenous DOM on soil microbial activity and C-Fe coupling in paddy soils remains underexplored. With a 100-day microcosm experiment, we determined that the molecular composition of DOM derived from organic fertilizers and biochar on paddy soil affects soil microbial community, Fe reduction, and C emissions. Our results indicated that biochar-DOM significantly promoted Fe reduction and accelerated CH4 and CO2 emissions, and organic manure-DOM increased soil CO2 emissions, which was closely related to the molecular composition of exogenous DOM. DOM molecules with high aromaticity (AImod) and high DBE, including lignins-vascular plant-derived polyphenols, lignins-polycyclic aromatics (PA), and condensed aromatics-PA, promoted soil Fe reduction and CH4 emissions by enriching soil Fe-reducing bacteria (FeRB), reducing methanotrophs, and facilitating r-strategists at the early stage of incubation. Conversely, DOMs with low AImod, low DBE and high H/C, such as lignins-highly unsaturated and phenolic compounds and proteins-aliphatic compounds, enhanced CO2 emissions by facilitating recalcitrant C degradation and CH4 oxidation at the late stage of incubation. In conclusion, our study highlights the importance of the molecular composition of DOMs derived from organic amendments in regulating soil Fe reduction and C emissions. The findings offer novel insights into the effective utilization of agricultural resources and the mitigation of soil C emissions.

Abstract:As an important group of widespread organic substances in aquatic ecosystems, dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an essential role in carbon recycling and transformation processes. The photochemical behavior of DOM is one of the main ways it participates in these processes, and it attracts extensive attention. However, due to a variety of sources and water conditions, including both freshwater and seawater environments, the photochemical properties of DOM exhibit great differences. Nowadays, a large number of studies have focused on the generation process of reactive species (RS) from sunlit DOM, while little effort has been made so far to provide a comprehensive summary of the photochemical behavior of DOM, especially in fresh and saline aquatic ecosystems. In this review, we analyzed the research hotspot on DOM photochemistry over the last 30 years, summarizing the generation of photoreactive species in natural water environments containing DOM (both freshwater and seawater), and listing the main factors affecting the rate, yield, and species of RS photo-production. Compared with freshwater, seawater has unique characteristics such as high pH value, high ionic strength, and halide ions, which affect the photogeneration of RS, the photoconversion process, as well as the reaction pathways of various environmental substances. In general, DOM-induced surface water photochemistry has important impacts on the environmental transformation and toxic effects of aquatic pollutants, and can even contribute significantly to the Earth’s carbon cycle, which would have potential implications for both human and ecological health.

Abstract:The plant-soil subsystem is one of the most important terrestrial ecosystems relating to the human health. The movement of organic pollutants in this subsystem is dominated by various micro-ecological processes on root-soil interface. These micro-ecological processes are mostly driven by physio-chemical and biological changes induced by root-soil interactions, such as root exudation of organic anions and protons. In order to safeguard the sustainable production of safety food and to maintain the environmental quality, it is essential to understand the mechanisms of these micro-ecological processes. This paper presents a personal overview on the recent achievements in this research field with the aim of provoking further in depth research in the near future.
Effects of Dissolved Organic Matter on the Bioavailability of Heavy Metals During Microbial Dissimilatory Iron Reduction: A Review

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM), a type of mixture containing complex structures and interactions, has important effects on environmental processes such as the complexation and interface reactions of soil heavy metals. Furthermore, microbial dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR), a key process of soil biogeochemical cycle, is closely related to the migration and transformation of heavy metals and causes the release of DOM by carbon-ferrihydrite associations. This chapter considers the structural properties and characterization techniques of DOM and its interaction with microbial dissimilated iron. The effect of DOM on microbial DIR is specifically manifested as driving force properties, coprecipitation, complexation, and electronic shuttle properties. The study, in addition, further explored the influence of pH, microorganisms, salinity, and light conditions, mechanism of DOM and microbial DIR on the toxicity and bioavailability of different heavy metals. The action mechanism of these factors on heavy metals can be summarized as adsorption coprecipitation, methylation, and redox. Based on the findings of the review, future research is expected to focus on: (1) The combination of DOM functional group structure analysis with high-resolution mass spectrometry technology and electrochemical methods to determine the electron supply in the mechanism of DOM action on DIR; (2) Impact of DOM on differences in structure and functions of plant rhizosphere in heavy metal contaminated soil; and (3) Bioavailability of DOM-dissociative iron-reducing bacteria-heavy metal ternary binding on rhizosphere heavy metals under dynamic changes of water level from the perspective of the differences in DOM properties, such as polarity, molecular weight, and functional group.

Abstract:Exogenous dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in the migration and transformation of heavy metals in soil. This study investigated the effect of composting-DOM with different maturity on changes of Pb bioactivity in soil, and evaluated the soil environmental factors driving these changes. The results showed that the activating ability of DOM to Pb in chernozem and dark brown soil increased by 4.11%−22.42% and 13.22%−30.15%, respectively. And the order followed: fresh manure (FDOM) > immature compost (IDOM) > mature compost (MDOM). The pH and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were the main factors driving the changes in diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid extraction (DTPA) -Pb in chernozem and dark brown soil, respectively. In chernozem, the input of MDOM can reduce the proportion of easily mobile fractions of Pb. While, DOM promotes the transformation of Pb from organic bound and residual fractions to exchangeable and carbonate bound fractions under other conditions. Moreover, the input of DOM can also drive the transformation of Pb species by regulating soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic matter (SOM), DOC, and enzyme activity.

Abstract:Long-term waste accumulation (LTWA) in soil not only alters its physical and chemical properties but also affects heavy metals and microorganisms in polluted soil through the dissolved organic matter (DOM) it produces. However, research on the impact of DOM from LTWA on heavy metals and microorganisms in polluted soil is limited, which has resulted in an incomplete understanding of the mechanisms involved in LTWA soils remediation. This study focuses on the DOM generated by waste accumulation and analyses the physicochemical properties, microbial community structure, and vertical distribution of heavy metals in four types of LTWA soils at different depths (0-100 cm). A causal analysis is conducted using structural equation modelling. The results indicate that due to the retention effect of the soil and microorganisms, heavy metal pollution is concentrated on the soil surface layer (>30 cm). With increasing depth, there is a decrease in heavy metal concentration and an increase in microbial diversity and abundance. DOM plays a significant role in regulating the concentration of soil heavy metals and the diversity and abundance of microorganisms. The DOM from different soils gradually transforms into substances dominated by tyrosine, tryptophan, and fulvic acid, which sustain the normal life activities and gene expression of microorganisms. Bacteria such as Pseudarthrobacter, Desulfurivibrio, Thiobacillus, and Sulfurimonas, which are involved in energy transformation, along with genes such as water channel protein and YDIF, which enhance heavy metal metabolism, ensure that microbial communities can maintain basic life processes in polluted environments and gradually select for dominant species that are adapted to heavy metal pollution. These novel discoveries illuminate the potential for modulating the composition of DOM to amplify microbial activity, while concurrently offering insights into the migration patterns of various long-term exogenous pollutants. This foundational knowledge provides a foundation for the development of efficacious remediation strategies.
Different impacts of natural and anthropogenic factors on dissolved organic matter chemistry in coastal rivers: Implications for water management

Abstract:The chemical composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) exerts significant influence on aquatic energy dynamics, pollutant transportation, and carbon storage, thereby playing pivotal roles in the local water quality and regional-global biogeochemical cycling. However, the effects of natural climate change and local human activities on watershed characteristics and in-river processes have led to uncertainties regarding their contributions to DOM chemistry in coastal rivers, creating challenges for effective water management and the study of organic matter cycling. In this investigation, we employed a combination of stable isotopic analysis, optical techniques, and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) to elucidate the sources, optical properties, and molecular composition of DOM in three South China coastal rivers. Our results suggest that terrestrial DOM entering the three rivers through natural or anthropogenic pathways is gradually diluted by in situ primary production as it moves downstream, ultimately being influenced by seawater intrusion near the estuary. Additionally, terrestrial processes influenced by temperature likely govern DOC concentration, while seawater intrusion promotes the natural production of S-containing organic compounds. In contrast, human-altered landcover significantly impacts DOM molecular composition. Increased water areas lead to the enrichment of lignins with high disinfection byproduct formation potential, and agricultural residue burning appears to be the dominant source of pyrogenic DOM in these coastal rivers. Our distinct results suggest that the development of specific water management plans that consider the combined effects of temperature, seawater intrusion, landcover changes, and agricultural practices will be essential to ensure sustainable water resource.

Relationship between dissolved organic matter and phytoplankton community dynamics in a human-impacted subtropical river

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is closely related to phytoplankton blooms, one of the most concerning environmental problems globally. DOM originates from phytoplankton production and metabolic activity and, in turn, can influence phytoplankton biomass and community structure. Therefore, clarifying the relationship between phytoplankton community dynamics and DOM has implications for bloom prevention and control as well as for aquatic ecosystem management. To understand this relationship further, we investigated phytoplankton communities at 110 sites in the dry and rainy seasons within the Dongjiang River basin, China, which is known for high rates of urbanization, industrialization, and agricultural intensification. The interaction between DOM (two humic-like DOM [C1 and C2] and two protein-like DOM [C3 and C4]) and phytoplankton community dynamics was investigated. Phytoplankton biomass and taxonomic composition were significantly related to C2, C3, and C4. The effect of C3 and C4 on phytoplankton taxonomic composition was prominent. C2 originating from agricultural wastewater increased phytoplankton biomass and changed phytoplankton taxonomic composition, whereas C1, originating from terrestrial soils and plants, did not stimulate phytoplankton biomass in rivers. There were clear change points, where phytoplankton abundance rapidly increased or decreased with changes in the concentrations of DOM components. Results suggested that DOM controls phytoplankton community dynamics and their relationship changes with variations in DOM chemical composition. DOM generated by anthropogenic activities may act as a potential warning of phytoplankton blooms.

Effects of Dissolved Organic Matter from Wastewater on Sorption of Tetrabromobisphenol A to Soils

Abstract:Sorption of tetrabromobisphenol A(TBBPA)on soil influences the fate and transport of TBBPA in environment, and the sorption process on soil may be complicated in the presence of dissolved organic matter(DOM). Using batch equilibrium experiments, the effects of DOM isolated from the influent and effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant on the sorption of TBBPA to three soils were investigated. The results showed that the distribution coefficients of TBBPA in the three soils ranged from 20.0 to 465.7 L·kg-1, and that the pH and organic matter content of the soils played an important role in the sorption of TBBPA. The effects of DOM on the sorption were strongly related to the concentration of the DOM and the properties of the soils. While the presence of DOM did not inhibit the sorption of TBBPA to the fluvo-aquic soil(sandy loam)and the meadow brown soil(loamy clay), it significantly suppressed the sorption of TBBPA to the grey lime soil(silt loam). The impacts of the DOM on the sorption of TBBPA were mainly controlled by the cumulative sorption effect and the solution pH. The results of this work would help to understand the sorption and transport behaviors of TBBPA in soils irrigated with wastewater.
Molecular-level Insight into the Role of Soil-Derived Dissolved Organic Matter Composition in Regulating Photochemical Reactivity

Abstract:Soil-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) links soil and water carbon pools and is an important source of photochemically produced reactive intermediates (PPRIs) in aquatic environments. Despite its importance, the variations in photochemical reactivity of soil-derived DOM molecules in producing PPRIs across broad geographical regions, and the factors driving these variations, remain unclear. Herein, we resolved the apparent quantum yields (Φ(PPRIs)) of hydroxyl radicals (•OH), singlet oxygen (1O2), and excited triplet-state DOM (3DOM*) for irradiated DOM from 22 representative soil reference materials in China, and linked them to soil pH, mineral weathering degree, and DOM characteristics. Generally, the average Φ(PPRIs) values of the soil-derived DOM followed the order of Φ(3DOM*) (1.67× 10−2) > Φ(1O2) (1.47× 10−2) > Φ(•OH) (7.31× 10−5). The DOM from less weathered soils showed higher Φ(•OH) and Φ(3DOM*) and comparable Φ(1O2) than that from more weathered soils. The differences were mainly regulated by the abundance of humic-, lignin-, tannin-, and aromatic-like compounds, as indicated by the correlation and random forest model analyses. Partial least squares and multiple linear regression analyses identified DOM molecular weight, nominal oxidation state of carbon, and soil chemical index of alteration as effective predictors of •OH yields. Soil chemical index of alteration emerged as a prioritized predictor of 3DOM* yields, while the electron-donating capacity and humic-like compound content of the soil-derived DOM were effective predictors of 1O2 yields. This study advances our understanding of how mineral weathering processes regulate the photochemical reactivity of soil-derived DOM in the aquatic environment across wide geographical regions.

Abstract:Microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter (MP-DOM) exerts great effects on organic carbon pool and its environmental behaviors in natural waters due to increasing amounts of uncontrolled plastic disposal. However, systematic understanding of chemical composition and environmental impacts of MP-DOM in aquatic systems was limited. In this work, the chemical and molecular structures of MP-DOM derived from diverse characterization methods were examined and synthesized to provide a basis for understanding their environmental processes. Additionally, those factors affecting the quantity and quality of released MP-DOM (e.g., plastic types, water environments, and external weathering conditions) were reviewed. Furthermore, environmental behaviors of MP-DOM including its biological degradation, adsorption on mineral surfaces, and interaction with pollutants, as well as their environmental impacts were comprehensively summarized. Finally, we outlooked the future research directions on MP-DOM studies, aiming to contribute to a deeper understanding of the environmental mechanisms and control of plastic pollution through the analysis of MP-DOM. This review provides information for further understanding the impact of microplastics on natural water, which might have consequences on the fluxes of carbon and biogeochemical behaviors of metal and organic contaminants.
