Integration in Systemic Functional Linguistics Studies

Abstract:In linguistic studies, the isolating stream (e.g., formal linguistics) and the integrating stream (e.g., functional linguistics) differ in their ways of looking at how language works. Choosing the integrating approach or the isolating approach depends on the nature of the linguistic theory, the scope of the linguistic inquiry, its aim(s) of theorizing and its object of studies. This paper attempts to discuss the integrating nature of systemic functional linguistics studies by investigating the relationship between grammar and semantics on the one hand and that between system and text on the other.
