Abstract:The English and Chinese versions of China’s Standards of English Language Ability (CSE) were released in 2018. The appearance of CSE helps to solve the problems of different standards of English exams in China, the separation of teaching and assessment objectives, and the incoherence of teaching objectives at various stages. Before, during, and after the development of the CSE, many scholars have discussed the construction of the scale from theory to practice and contributed to the realization of the same standardization for English testing in China. This paper aims to review the relevant studies in order to provide insights and suggestions for the future research and application of the CSE from three aspects: 1) introducing the two major theoretical frameworks for validating language scales in China; 2) reviewing the studies on the validity of the CSE in general; and 3) reviewing the empirical studies on the validity of the sub-scales in the CSE, including listening, speaking, reading, writing, interpreting, translation, pragmatic competence. However, there is a lack of studies on the aspect of organizational competence.

A Novel Application System of Assessing the Pronunciation Differences Between Chinese Children and Adults

Abstract:Background: Health problems about children have been attracting much attention of parents and even the whole society all the time, among which, child-language development is a hot research topic. The experts and scholars have studied and found that the guardians taking appropriate intervention in children at the early stage can promote children's language and cognitive ability development effectively, and carry out analysis of quantity. The intervention of Artificial Intelligence Technology has effect on the autistic spectrum disorders of children obviously. Objective and methods: This paper presents a speech signal analysis system for children, with preprocessing of the speaker speech signal, subsequent calculation of the number in the speech of guardians and children, and some other characteristic parameters or indicators (e.g cognizable syllable number, the continuity of the language). Results: With these quantitative analysis tool and parameters, we can evaluate and analyze the quality of children's language and cognitive ability objectively and quantitatively to provide the basis for decision-making criteria for parents. Thereby, they can adopt appropriate measures for children to promote the development of children's language and cognitive status. Conclusion: In this paper, according to the existing study of children's language development, we put forward several indicators in the process of automatic measurement for language development which influence the formation of children's language. From the experimental results we can see that after the pretreatment (including signal enhancement, speech activity detection), both divergence algorithm calculation results and the later words count are quite satisfactory compared with the actual situation.

Abstract:Speech audiometry plays an important role in the assessment of hearing abilities, as it may more accurately reflect auditory function in the daily communication environment of listeners than other auditory assessment measures. Speech perception tests have been developed for over a century in Western countries, and they are commonly used procedures in North America and Europe, as well as Australia. The course of history and scientific progress has influenced speech audiometry in both its clinical and research aspects. Test materials developed from syllables and words to phases and sentences, and test protocols have evolved from using only simple speech stimuli in quiet to hearing-in-noise tests. In the early years, the purpose of speech audiometry was primarily to evaluate telecommunication systems. Today, speech tests are more often applied to assess speech perception abilities for individuals with hearing impairment. In addition to aiding diagnosis of the location of peripheral auditory pathology and measuring (central) auditory processing abilities, with the development of auditory amplification devices speech tests are also utilized to assess the outcomes of hearing aid and cochlear implant rehabilitation. Compared to the well documented speech test materials of Western countries, development in this field in China has been relatively delayed. A lack of material standardization, few test versions for the numerous Chinese dialect groups or for non-Chinese language minority populations, and insufficient test materials for children, have obstructed the development of speech audiometry in China. This review highlights key research milestones in the development of Chinese speech audiometry material, including work conducted in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, and suggests priorities for future research in this field in China.

Abstract:This article reviews a selected sample of 70 empirical studies in journal articles and doctoral dissertations on language assessment in China between 2011 and 2018. Following a brief introduction to the history and current state of language assessment in China, the article presents a critical review of language assessment research on six themes that have aroused the greatest interest from researchers in the country, including (1) test reliability and validity; (2) factors affecting test performance; (3) rating and rating scales; (4) technology and language testing; (5) test washback; and (6) classroom-based assessment. In addition to situating the commentary on the studies within the social, cultural and historical contexts of China, this article outlines the scholarly contributions of these studies to the wider international field of language learning, teaching and assessment. It concludes with recommendations on areas in need of further development over the coming decades.

Bridging Local Needs and National Standards: Use of Standards-Based Individualized Feedback of an In-House EFL Listening Test in China

Abstract:Local language tests are an arena where national language standards can be operationalized to create a hub for integrating assessment results and language support. Few studies, however, have examined the operationalization of national standards in local language assessment contexts. In this study, we proposed a model to present the integration of national standards in local contexts to guide assessment, teaching, and learning. Using this model, we conducted a 5-month longitudinal study involving 689 college students to examine (1) the consistency between their internal and external assessment feedback (i.e., standards-based self-assessment ratings and standards-based individualized English as a Foreign Language [EFL] listening test feedback) and (2) the effectiveness of standards-based teaching intervention in enhancing their perceived and actual language development. The results showed that the test feedback generally aligned well with students’ self-assessment and perceptions at the overall listening skill and subskill levels, yet student perceptions outlined needs for feedback refinements. In addition, the use of the standards-based individualized feedback, in conjunction with language support courses and practice materials, facilitated students’ perceived and actual listening achievement. This study makes an important contribution to local language testing by demonstrating the potential of a local instrument to provide a bridge between local instructional goals and national standards.

In 1999,Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st century was published as the complements of the general standards,which specified nine concrete standards. The two documents,in which much suggestion and guidance were made to the instruction of foreign language studies. The standards can also contribute to enrich and construct our school foreign language educational development.

Abstract:Current trends in public education create a demand for speaking and listening assessment procedures. Properly conceived and managed assessment programs may exert desirable effects on communication education. Currently available assessment instruments were surveyed with respect to content domains, response and scoring procedures, administrative feasibility, target populations, and potential sources of test bias. This review of test instruments supports the identification of several priorities for further research and development. Needs are discussed with respect to delineating the content domain, establishing criterion measures of communication quality, enhancing the reliability of instruments, identifying the sources of test bias, innovating measurement techniques, and appraising the utility of communication assessment.
The application of the Griffiths development scales (Chinese edition) among 2-4 year-old children with autism spectrum disorder

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the development of children 2-4 years old with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) using the Chinese version of the Griffiths Development Scales (GDS-C).Methods:Eighty-eight children with ASD, 80 children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and 82 healthy children aged 2-4 were evaluated using the GDS-C. They were compared and their development in sports, personal and social relationships, language, hand-eye coordination and other performance were analyzed. The personal-social and language results of the ASD and DLD children were compared.Results:No significant differences were found between the ASD and DLD children in their language development. The development quotient of the ASD children was significantly lower, on average, than those of the DLD and healthy children in all fields except language. However, the ASD children′s development was not balanced. Their average developmental quotients in the language and the personal-social fields were significantly lower than in the sports, performance and hand-eye coordination fields. In the field of language, the entry loss rates of the two structural modes of receptive language and non-verbal expression of the ASD children were significantly higher than the DLD children′s averages. In the personal-social field the entry loss rates of communication and housework skills and of self-care skill were significantly higher than the DLD children′s averages. The command structure model of the ASD children was also superior, on average.Conclusions:The GDS-C can effectively assess the development of ASD children aged 2-4, especially in terms of language and personal and social skills. It can provide clinical evidence useful for early diagnosis and intervention for children with ASD.

Abstract:Abstract This special issue delves into the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education (hereinafter referred to as “Grading Standards”), the first comprehensive framework for assessing the Chinese language proficiency of international learners. It presents five empirical studies that examine the applicability and challenges of adopting these standards in North America. The first paper offers a comparative analysis of global language standards, while the subsequent papers explore various aspects of the Grading Standards’ localization in the North American context, including character teaching, vocabulary, grammar instruction, and oral proficiency. The findings and recommendations provide valuable insights for course design, curriculum development, and textbook compilation in Chinese language programs across North American universities.

Abstract:Speech sound disorder (SSD) in children refers to persistent errors in producing certain speech sounds after the expected age of acquisition. This demonstration system performs automated assessment of SSD for Cantonese-speaking pre-school children. The system comprises a mobile application software, a back-end automatic speech recognition (ASR) system for child speech, and a clinically informed assessment scheme. It can be used to detect and identify suspected SSD symptoms at an early stage.
Tone evaluation of Ling sound test in Mandarin tone version

Abstract:Background: The Ling sound test cannot provide the test of Chinese tone for preschool children with hearing aid and cochlear implants. Objective: The paper tries to design a new tone test method composed of the Ling sound test and four Chinese tones to evaluate the hearing level of Chinese hearing-impaired children. Methods: The tone identification rates of 20 cochlear implant children were statistically analyzed to verify the validity of the Ling sound test in the Chinese tone version. In addition, this paper analyzed the pronunciation characteristics of the Ling sound test in the Chongqing-accented Mandarin version of 20 subjects. Results: The identification rate of Ling six sounds was more than 97.0%, the identification rate of tone was more than 81.0%, and the identification rate of vowels was 83.1%, which was higher than that of consonants 79.0%. The Ling sound test n the Chongqing-accented Mandarin version has a narrower frequency range. Conclusion: The results verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the Ling sound test in the Chinese tone version in the assessment of frequency range and tone identification for cochlear implant users.

Abstract:Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems have advanced significantly with models like Whisper, Conformer, and self-supervised frameworks such as Wav2vec 2.0 and HuBERT. However, developing robust ASR models for young children's speech remains challenging due to differences in pronunciation, tone, and pace compared to adult speech. In this paper, we introduce a new Mandarin speech dataset focused on children aged 3 to 5, addressing the scarcity of resources in this area. The dataset comprises 41.25 hours of speech with carefully crafted manual transcriptions, collected from 397 speakers across various provinces in China, with balanced gender representation. We provide a comprehensive analysis of speaker demographics, speech duration distribution and geographic coverage. Additionally, we evaluate ASR performance on models trained from scratch, such as Conformer, as well as fine-tuned pre-trained models like HuBERT and Whisper, where fine-tuning demonstrates significant performance improvements. Furthermore, we assess speaker verification (SV) on our dataset, showing that, despite the challenges posed by the unique vocal characteristics of young children, the dataset effectively supports both ASR and SV tasks. This dataset is a valuable contribution to Mandarin child speech research and holds potential for applications in educational technology and child-computer interaction. It will be open-source and freely available for all academic purposes.

Features of culturally and linguistically relevant speech‐language assessments for Indigenous children: A scoping review

Abstract:Introduction Indigenous children may be at higher risk of being misdiagnosed with speech‐language difficulties due to Eurocentric practices in health care and education. The use of conventional speech pathology assessment practices contributes to inappropriate disorder identification, further stigmatising a vulnerable population. Few resources are available for speech pathologists, which examine the cultural and linguistic relevance of assessments for this population. Objective To provide important features for speech pathologists to account for when building assessment plans for Indigenous children. Design This comprehensive scoping literature review was completed using the Arksey and O'Malley 6‐step methodological framework, including the optional consultation exercise, and reported using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta‐Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA‐ScR) guidelines. To be included, studies needed to have been published since 2000, discuss speech‐language assessments and involve a significant proportion of Indigenous participants under 7 years old. Findings Three features were extracted from 32 studies that discussed First Nations, Métis, Inuit, Native American, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities: using a battery of resources including alternative approaches, ensuring authenticity and cultural relevance, and considering a child's linguistic characteristics. Conclusion While there remains a need to adapt according to a specific child's reality, this study provides a guideline for all allied health clinicians when they are building their culturally and linguistically relevant assessment plans.

Validation of the Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire, Mandarin Chinese Version (CH-ASSQ) in Beijing, China.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:This study screened children in Beijing, China, in order to establish the validity of a Mandarin Chinese translation of the ASSQ.METHODS:We recruited children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), childhood-onset schizophrenia (COS) (DSM-IV diagnoses made independently by two senior psychiatrists) and unaffected children attending a public school in Beijing. Their parents were asked to complete the CH-ASSQ.RESULTS:Data from the parents of 94 children with ASD (mean age: 81 ± 47 months), 45 with ADHD (106 ± 27 months), 26 with COS (166 ± 36 months), and 120 unaffected control (72 ± 16 months) were collected. The total scores of ASSQ in children with ASD, ADHD, COS, and unaffected controls were 25.3 ± 9.2, 10.4 ± 7.1, 12.2 ± 10.6, and 5.2 ± 6.6 respectively. Total ASSQ scores of children with ASD were significantly higher than in any other group (all p < .0001). ROC analysis of ASD versus unaffected control subjects showed the area under curve was 0.957, with a cutoff of 12 having the maximum sensitivity (0.957) and specificity (0.825).CONCLUSIONS:Our pilot data suggest that CH-ASSQ successfully differentiates clinically diagnosed ASD patients from unaffected controls, as well as from patients with ADHD and COS. The instrument might therefore be useful for screening for ASD in urban Mandarin Chinese-speaking populations.

Abstract:This study aims to validate the simplified Chinese version of the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ) in children aged 2–12 years from both general and clinical populations. We recruited 819 Chinese children in this study, including 505 typically developing (TD) children, 202 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 112 children with non‐ASD neurodevelopmental disorders. All the children's parents completed the simplified Chinese version of the SCQ and all children with ASD were additionally assessed for intelligence and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale to confirm their diagnosis. We have developed a 40‐item, 4‐factor structure of SCQ with two domains (social communication and social interaction; and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior), which showed adequate goodness of fit (comparative fit index [CFI] = 0.96, Tucker‐Lewis index [TLI] = 0.95, standardized root mean squared residual [SRMR] = 0.07, root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = 0.05), with good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.92). We have provided different cut‐offs to distinguish ASD cases from TD children (11 for children under 4 years [sensitivity: 0.96, specificity: 0.95], 12 for children 4 years and above [sensitivity: 0.93, specificity: 0.98]) or children with other neurodevelopmental disorders (14 [sensitivity: 0.85, specificity: 0.88]). Through this large sample validation, we confirmed that the simplified Chinese version of the SCQ could be used for children aged 2–12 years with relatively good psychometric properties.Lay SummaryWe aimed to develop the simplified Chinese version of the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ) for Chinese children aged 2–12 years as a screening tool to identified potential risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Abstract:<p>The increasing attention on Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) pronunciation instruction gives us an opportunity to look into the current directions of teaching CFL and the specific instructional pronunciation strategies employed by CFL teachers. This paper offers a review of empirical evidence on the use and impact of instructional pronunciation strategies in the CFL field from 1980 to 2019. Our findings reveal that: (1) controlled segmental-based strategies—such as comparative strategies, listening, and repeating strategies—are used widely and effectively to improve pronunciation of Chinese initials and finals; (2) suprasegmental-based strategies, especially computer-assisted strategies, largely improve CFL students' tone accuracy; and (3) the validity of assessments in quantitative studies needs to be further developed by including comparative groups, making tests before and after instructions, and involving discourse assessment contents.</p>

Abstract:Objective To discuss the application of Chinese version of Speech intelligibility rating(SIR)in evaluating the speech intelligibility of Chinese children with hearing disorder,and analyze its scorer reliability.Methods 50children with cochlear implants or hearing aids were interviewed using SRI Chinese version.Each child was rated by aparent and a speech and language therapist.The reliability of scores was analyzed with Spearman correlation coefficient,Kendall's coefficient of concordance and Kappa coefficient.Results The complete agreement was foud in 34cases(68%),with a disagreement of one category in 14cases(28%),and a disagreement of 2categories was found in 2cases(4%).Spearman correlation coefficient was 0.885,Kendall's coefficient of concordance was 0.801,Kappa coefficient was 0.593,the result was statistically significant(P<0.001).Conclusion SRI Chinese version has good reliability and is helpful in evaluating Chinese speech producing ability of children with hearing disorder in everyday life.

Abstract:Background Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disease that poses challenges in both early intervention and long-term development for children with DD. However, there is a lack of a standardized and comprehensive tool for the diagnosis of DD in Mainland China. Aim To develop a standardized tool (i.e., Developmental Dyslexia Scale for Standard Mandarin [DDSSM]) for the diagnosis of DD in Mainland China and evaluate its reliability and validity. Methods and procedures DDSSM consists of 10 subtests. The initial draft was created after Delphi expert consultation, and the final version was revised to improve discriminability with a pilot study involving 450 children from grades 1–3. The reliability and validity were then confirmed with 53 children from grades 1–2. Outcomes and results The Delphi expert consultation demonstrated that the expert panel had good authority, and that all agreed on the subtest setup. The DDSSM exhibited great internal consistency. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the model aligns with the theoretical structure ( P > 0.05, χ 2 /df < 2.00, root-mean-square error of approximation (RMSEA) 0.90, TLI > 0.90). The Dyslexia Checklist for Chinese Children and children's academic performance agreed well with the DDSSM. Conclusions and implications The DDSAM is reliable and valid for assessing and diagnosing DD in Standard Mandarin-speaking primary school children from grades 1–2. What this paper adds? Although a number of scales and tools have been proposed for assessing developmental dyslexia (DD) in Chinese, there is still a lack of diagnostic tools for Mandarin Chinese in Mainland China. In this study, we developed one of the most comprehensive diagnostic tools for DD in Mandarin Chinese for lower graders. We included visual-spatial attention (VA) and compounding awareness (CA), two tests that have been recently suggested as reliable measures for identifying DD in the Chinese language. This assessment tool has been verified for robust reliability and validity. This study also provided confirmation of the core deficits of DD in Chinese, which were orthographic awareness (OA). In addition, VA, rapid automatized naming (RAN) and morphological awareness (MA) were found to be the most important cognitive abilities for word reading in Chinese lower graders in this study.

Abstract:Speech is a powerful, natural mode of communication that facilitates effective interactions in human societies. However, when fluency or flow of speech is affected or interrupted, it leads to speech impairment. There are several types of speech impairment depending on the speech pattern and range from mild to severe. Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is the most common speech disorder in children, with 1 out of 12 children diagnosed globally. Significant advancements in speech assessment tools have been reported to assist speech-language pathologists diagnosis speech impairment. In recent years, speech assessment tools have also gained popularity among pediatricians and teachers who work with preschoolers. Automatic speech tools can be more accurate for detecting speech sound disorders (SSD) than human-based speech assessment methods. This systematic literature review covers 88 studies, including more than 500 children, infants, toddlers, and a few adolescents, (both male and female) (age = 0–17) representing speech impairment from more than 10 countries. It discusses the state-of-the-art speech assessment methods, including tools, techniques, and protocols for speech-impaired children. Additionally, this review summarizes notable outcomes in detecting speech impairments using said assessment methods and discusses various limitations such as universality, reliability, and validity. Finally, we consider the challenges and future directions for speech impairment assessment tool research.
