Abstract:Historical research on the modernization of urban commerce has to pay attention to the mental world and curriculum of small and medium businessmen whose financial resources and business per spectives were limited. In so doing, the scale of their activities, crucial for any city, are linked to their pro fessional management and their familial way of life. How could they use such links to expand their urban professional network? If this expansion was grounded on new professional information and knowledge, what were the social conditions which made this transfer of knowledge simply possible? What was the financial basis of their investments in new technology? Given the difficulty to get detailed data regarding the con crete management within a small firm, the present study on Beijing Chengwenhou associates the manager's life story with the urban archives related to his firm.Obviously, this case study reveals that the business orientation of the Beijing Chengwenhou manager was two-fold:he tried to satisfy the needs of his family and protect the interests of his firm.In the process,he always kept in mind the sense of his familial and moral duties and his responsibility towards his firm. The members of Chengwenhou family were living in Beijing,a city where Chinese and foreign firms coexisted and local trade activities and vigorous exchanges could be developed.Practicing business traditions but always in search of modernization and business opportunities, the family could survive the war and various social and familial crises by developing the Chengwenhou firm.In the general context of the safeguarding of the intangible culture heritage, the Chen gwenhou case shows how important it is to discover and reconstruct different case studies.
