Abstract:This volume contains the proceedings of the 2007 Symposium on Point-Based Graphics (PBG07), held September 2-3 in Prague, Czech Republic, and being co-located with Eurographics and the International Workshop on Volume Graphics (VG07). As observed within the last years, both the availability and complexity of high-resolution geometric models continue to increase rapidly, thereby provoking further research in the field of point-based graphics. As the fourth symposium of its series, PBG07 tries to demonstrate the benefits of point primitives for modeling, simulation, rendering, and other computer graphics and geometry processing applications.Responding to our call for papers, we received 26 complete submissions from all around the world. Each paper was reviewed by four members of our international program committee, and based on their recommendations the papers chairs made the final selection of 14 high-quality papers included in these proceedings. Like in 2006, the best papers of PBG07 will be selected at the conference, and will be additionally published in a special issue of Computers & Graphics.

Abstract:In order to real-time rendering complex scenes, many algorithms need a multi-resolution representation data structure which can support good rendering performance. In this paper we introduce a novel stream-based (and out-of-core) point preprocessing algorithm which generating multi- resolution hierarchy based on bounding spheres by processing points in an orderly sequential way and sweeping double-plane along a spatial dimension. The major advantages of this novel concept are: (I) our algorithm can be used to in support of other stream operators, (2) generating a multi-resolution model representation, (3) low main-memory usage. A Novel Pointcloud-Based Isosurface Extraction

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel approach of hardware-accelerated pointcloud-based isosurface extraction on tetrahedral cells. In contrast to previous methods; our method takes advantage of programmable capability on the modern graphics hardware to render the isosurface silhouette and reduces the video memory consumption per tetrahedron. We achieve this by using a GPU-based geometry-generating method called fat-point technique. We classify tetrahedra into three isosurface cases and compute corresponding parameters in vertex processors, and then generate implicit isosurface silhouette in fragment processors. Utilizing the high performance OpenGL vertex buffer objects, our algorithm can achieve a rendering rate of three million tetrahedra per second.
A New Approach of Point-Based Rendering

Abstract:Abstract: A new approach of point-based rendering is presented for objects with complex shape. By this approach, an object is represented by a set of discrete sample points, each point stands for a sampled surface area whose boundary is assumed to be a circle when viewed along its normal. An algorithm is proposed to build a point-based model with level of details. Efficiency of the rendering process is ensured by performing adaptive sampling of the model without calculating the sample points on the fly. To get rid of the aliasing effects due to point sampling, we have developed a delta-z-buffer and a flag buffer to smooth the boundary of two adjacent sampled areas and to fill the holes that may appear inside the image of an object. Experimental results show that our new approach is capable of rendering complex objects consisting of only 50,000 points with acceptable image quality and high rendering efficiency.

Abstract:As an alternative surface representation, point-based geometry neither has to store nor to maintain globally consistent topological information. It can both process shape flexibly and render appearance efficiently of extremely complex 3D model, therefore it has experienced a major renaissance in recent years. A comprehensive survey of point-based computer graphics was proposed. After introducing the general framework of point-based technical, various up-to-date shape representations, geometric algorithms and rendering methods were reviewed evaluated, which used points as a universal graphics primitive. At last, some challenges together with the future directions of point-based computer graphics were indicated, and an extensive bibliography was also provided.

Abstract:Point set surface is attracting more and more attentions in computer graphics and CAD industry, and gradually becoming one of the main 3D model representations. This paper presents a new method for multi-resolution representations of point set surface that is transformed into a set of hierarchical geometry images. The original 3D model can be reconstructed from multi-resolution images step by step. These multi-resolution representations can be applied to progressive network transmission of Point set surfaces.

Abstract:Combining the basic form of non-uniform α-B interpolation spline with its shape control mechanics,a new approach was produced to solving the problem of representing 2D sketches.Based on non-uniform α-B interpolation spline representation,algorithms of 2D sketch representation,generation,modification and scale were studied and brought up.This representation method is a unified solution,and the interpolation points can easily be computed,so very suitable for designers to coo￣perate under distributing network environments.The sketch scale is of the same advantage as vector map,and designers can(perform) shape control on the scaled sketch.
Fast High-Quality Rendering of Point-Sampled Geometry

Abstract:In order to achieve fast and high-quality rendering for point-sampled geometry (PSG), this paper proposes a single-pass point rendering algorithm. Based on moving least squares surface, the differential properties of each sample point on PSG are first evaluated. In terms of covariance analysis, the elliptical splat of sample point is then determined on its tangent plane. Finally, the splats are rendered from far to near by using elliptical weighted average filtering. According to the differential properties, moreover, the suggestive contours of PSG are attained so that non-photorealistic rendering of PSG is realized. Some experimental results demonstrate that the algorithm is fast, and can achieve high-quality rendering of PSG.
Multiresolution Free Form Object Modeling with Point Sampled Geometry.

Abstract:In this paper an efficient framework for the creation of 3D digital content with point sampled geometry is proposed. A new hierarchy of shape representations with three levels is adopted in this framework. Based on this new hierarchical shape representation, the proposed framework offers concise integration of various volumetric- and surface-based modeling techniques, such as Boolean operation, offset, blending, free-form deformation, parameterization and texture mapping, and thus simplifies the complete modeling process. Previously to achieve the same goal, several separated algorithms had to be used independently with inconsistent volumetric and surface representations of the free-form object. Both graphics and industrial applications are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed framework.
PointWorks: Abstraction and Rendering of Sparsely Scanned Outdoor Environments.

Abstract:This paper describes a system, dubbed PointWorks, for rendering three-dimensionally digitized outdoor environments in non-photorealistic rendering styles. The challenge in rendering scanned outdoor environments is accommodating their inaccuracy, incompleteness, and large size to deliver a smooth animation without suggesting the underlying data deficiency. The key method discussed in this paper is employing artistic drawing techniques to illustrate features of varying importance and accuracy. We employ a point-based representation of the scanned environment and operate directly on point-based models for abstraction and rendering. We develop a framework for producing mainly two artistic styles: painterly and profile lines. Strategies have also been employed to leverage modern graphics hardware for achieving interactive rendering of large scenes.

High Quality Real-Time Rendering of Large Scale Point Model

Abstract:This paper proposes a real time and high quality rendering algorithm for large scale point models. First it introduces a distance dependent adaptive rendering scheme which reduces the computation without loss of quality. As a preprocess, large scale point model is subdivided into multiple patches and a hierarchical structure is built for each patch and converted into a linear binary tree. During rendering, the model is processed patch by patch. Fast view frustum and back face culling, based on respective bounding box and normal cone, are first performed to determine invisible patches. Visible patches are then rendered by choosing appropriate rendering mode and view dependent level of detail. For determined level of detail, corresponding point geometry is accessed from the linear binary tree. Adaptive distance dependent rendering is accomplished to select point geometry, yielding better performance without loss of quality. In addition, This paper proposes a fast compression and decompression technique and achieve 8 times compression ratio to store all geometry information in local video memory. By exploiting the power of programmable graphics hardware, the proposed algorithm achieves real time high quality rendering in consumer PCs.

Abstract:We propose a novel morphing algorithm for objects represented by point-sampled geometry. The fundamental problem of point-sampled geometry morphing is how to set the correspondence between points of the two objects which are usually of different size. The two objects are first parameterized by projecting the sample points onto a common parametric domain. As both objects are densely sampled, we present a novel accelerated parameterization algorithm employing the technique of LOD. The common parameter domain is then split recursively into clusters. The correspondence between sample points of the two objects is established by performing a local mapping in each cluster. As for complex geometries, the establishment of correspondence is facilitated by decomposing the geometry into patches using geodesic decomposition curves.To preserve the features during morphing, a process of features assignment is incorporated. By re-sampling the in-between object dynamically and adaptively, the cracks that would occasionally occur during morphing are successfully eliminated. Experiment results show that our algorithms are fast, stable and easy to implement. High-quality morphing is produced. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Computational simulations frequently generate solutions defined over very large tetrahedral volume meshes containing many millions of elements. Furthermore, such solutions may often be expressed using non-linear basis functions.Certain solution techniques, such as discontinuous Galerkin methods, may even produce non-conforming meshes.Such data is difficult to visualize interactively, as it is far too large to fit in memory and many common data reduction techniques, such as mesh simplification, cannot be applied to non-conforming meshes.We introduce a point-based visualization system for interactive rendering of large, potentially non-conforming, tetrahedral meshes. We propose methods for adaptively sampling points from non-linear solution data and for decimating points at run time to fit GPU memory limits. Because these are streaming processes, memory consumption is independent of the input size. We also present an order-independent point rendering method that can efficiently render volumes on the order of 20 million tetrahedra at interactive rates.

Abstract: Non-photorealistic computer graphics has created an intriguing new field espousing expression, abstraction and stylization in preference to traditional computer graphics concerns about photorealism. It has two complimentary goals: the communication of information using images and rendering images in interesting and novel visual styles which are free from the traditional computer graphics constraint of producing images which are life-like. Many artistic and visual styles have been realized in non-photorealistic computer graphics, including interactive and automated systems for drawing and painting [Sayeed & Howard, 2006]. There is an international symposium NPAR (non-photorealistic animation and rendering) dedicated to non-photorealistic computer graphics, sponsored by the ACM SIGGRAPH and in co-operation with Eurographics. In 2009 it is the second time for NPAR to be collocated with SIGGRAPH, and this allows us to raise attention to this important field, and to open it to new people from academia, arts and industry.
Rendering of Virtual Environments Based on Polygonal & Point-Based Models

Abstract:Real-time rendering for large-scale, complex dynamic virtual scenes is a challenging problem in computer graphics. In this paper, we propose a hybrid rendering algorithm of dynamic virtual environments that seamlessly fuses the point-based scheme and polygon-based scheme. In our algorithm, the scene is organized into a BSP-tree. Objects in the leaf-nodes of the BSP tree are further subdivided into a quad-tree hierarchy, which contains both the sample points and polygon rendering information at each level. The accelerated rendering algorithm integrates the hierarchical occlusion map technique, image caching technique and BSP technique to fast render complex dynamic scenes. During navigation, our system adaptively determines the rendering mode and the level of details of objects, and achieves smooth transition between the two rendering modes by effectively controlling the rendering precision. The dynamic objects can be processed in the system uniformly. Our experimental results have demonstrated the satisfactory performance of the proposed hybrid-rendering scheme for the dynamic virtual environments.
P-quadtrees: a Point and Polygon Hybrid Multi-Resolution Rendering Approach

Abstract:Point and polygon representations have their respective merits in rendering objects. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid multi-resolution approach, P-Quadtrees, to efficiently render highly detailed objects. P-Quadtrees are constructed from geometry images. Both point and polygon are tightly integrated into a uniform structure. While traversing the P-Quadtrees in rendering, the part of surface that face the viewer can be rendered by coarser quad mesh to reduce the numbers of rendering primitives. The shading details can be enhanced by hardware accelerated normal mapping. The view dependent LOD selects the finer hierarchy on silhouette, which is rendered by points. The rendering of large-scale model is greatly accelerated while the visual effect both at the surfaces and the silhouette is guaranteed.
