Abstract:Noble-metal nanocrystals are essential to applications in a variety of areas, including catalysis, electronics, and photonics. Despite the large number of reports, there still exists a gap between academic studies and industrial applications due to the lack of ability to produce the nanocrystals in large quantities while still maintaining the good uniformity and precise controls. Because the nucleation and growth of colloidal nanocrystals are highly sensitive to experimental conditions, it is impractical to scale up their production by simply increasing the reaction volume. Here we report a new and practical approach based on milliliter-sized droplet reactors to the scalable production of nanocrystals. The droplets of 0.25 mL in volume were produced as a continuous flow in a fluidic device assembled from commercially available components. As a proof of concept, we have synthesized Pd, Au, and Pd-M (M = Au, Pt, and Ag) nanocrystals with controlled sizes, shapes, compositions, and structures on a scale of 1-10 g per hour (e.g., 3.6 g per hour for Pd cubes of 10 nm in edge length).

Abstract:New strategies for materials fabrication are of fundamental importance in the advancement of science and technology 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 . Organometallic 13 , 14 and other organic solution phase 15 , 16 , 17 synthetic routes have enabled the synthesis of functional inorganic quantum dots or nanocrystals. These nanomaterials form the building blocks for new bottom-up approaches to materials assembly for a range of uses; such materials also receive attention because of their intrinsic size-dependent properties and resulting applications 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 . Here we report a unified approach to the synthesis of a large variety of nanocrystals with different chemistries and properties and with low dispersity; these include noble metal, magnetic/dielectric, semiconducting, rare-earth fluorescent, biomedical, organic optoelectronic semiconducting and conducting polymer nanoparticles. This strategy is based on a general phase transfer and separation mechanism occurring at the interfaces of the liquid, solid and solution phases present during the synthesis. We believe our methodology provides a simple and convenient route to a variety of building blocks for assembling materials with novel structure and function in nanotechnology 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 .

Abstract:A new methodology based on core alloying and shell gradient-doping are developed for the synthesis of nanohybrids, realized by coupled competitive reactions, or sequenced reducing-nucleation and co-precipitation reaction of mixed metal salts in a microfluidic and batch-cooling process. The latent time of nucleation and the growth of nanohybrids can be well controlled due to the formation of controllable intermediates in the coupled competitive reactions. Thus, spatiotemporal-resolved synthesis can be realized by the hybrid process, which enables us to investigate nanohybrid formation at each stage through their solution color changes and TEM images. By adjusting the bi-channel solvents and kinetic parameters of each stage, the primary components of alloyed cores and the second components of transition metal doping ZnO or Al 2 O 3 as surface coatings can be successively formed. The core alloying and shell gradient-doping strategy can efficiently eliminate the crystal lattice mismatch in different components. Consequently, varieties of gradient core-shell nanohybrids can be synthesized using CoM, FeM, AuM, AgM (M = Zn or Al) alloys as cores and transition metal gradient-doping ZnO or Al 2 O 3 as shells, endowing these nanohybrids with unique magnetic and optical properties (e.g., high temperature ferromagnetic property and enhanced blue emission).

Abstract:At the forefront of nanochemistry, there exists a research endeavor centered around intermetallic nanocrystals, which are unique in terms of long-range atomic ordering, well-defined stoichiometry, and controlled crystal structure. In contrast to alloy nanocrystals with no elemental ordering, it is challenging to synthesize intermetallic nanocrystals with a tight control over their size and shape. Here, recent progress in the synthesis of intermetallic nanocrystals with controllable sizes and well-defined shapes is highlighted. A simple analysis and some insights key to the selection of experimental conditions for generating intermetallic nanocrystals are presented, followed by examples to highlight the viable use of intermetallic nanocrystals as electrocatalysts or catalysts for various reactions, with a focus on the enhanced performance relative to their alloy counterparts that lack elemental ordering. Within the conclusion, perspectives on future developments in the context of synthetic control, structure-property relationships, and applications are discussed.

Abstract:A variety of metallic nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution have been synthesized in a facile one-phase method in which amine-borane complexes are applied as reducing agents. It is particularly striking that large colloidal crystals with sizes up to tens of micrometers can directly form from the reaction mixtures without any further treatment. By using the synthetic route described, large-scale syntheses of both mono- and alloyed metallic nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution can be easily achieved.

Abstract:Single-phase approaches are introduced for the synthesis of nearly monodisperse Au and other noble metal nanocrystals. The new approaches possess all the advantages of the popular Brust method. With weak ligands or surfactants for the metal ions, the control of the size and size distribution of the nanocrystals in synthesis in the size range between 1 and 15 nm was achieved via maintaining balanced nucleation and growth by tuning the activities of the metal precursors and reducing reagents. Because only weak ligands are employed in the new synthetic schemes, surface modification and functionalization of the resulting nanocrystals can be readily carried out.

Abstract:Effective yet versatile synthetic strategies for size‐tunable metal nanoclusters (NCs) are scarce. This has hampered the development of this unique class of nanomaterials. Here, a general protocol is reported for the synthesis of high‐quality metal NCs protected by a variety of organic ligands (e.g., selenolate, thiolate, and phosphine) based on a miscible‐solvent‐assisted phase transfer between water and organic solution. This method is demonstrated to be facile, rapid (≤3 h), scalable (gram‐scale), and versatile. The size of the selenolated and thiolated Au NCs can be tuned from Au10 to Au61 by simply varying the miscible solvent in proportions and types. The advantages of this method, such as quick phase separation and no need for purification treatment, enable real‐time monitoring of metal NC growth within the NaBH4 reduction system. The results show that the size of Au NCs gradually increases with increasing valence electron count by a stepwise 2x e‐ hopping mechanism (x = 0–5), i.e., 0 e‐ → 2 e‐ → 4 e‐ → 8 e‐ → 18 e‐ → 22 e‐ → 32 e‐.

Abstract:A one-step synthesis method is described to prepare high-quality ultrafine inorganic semiconductor nanocrystals via a two-phase interface hydrolysis reaction under hydrothermal conditions. With the synthesis of ZrO2 quantum dots as an example, we show that the prepared nanocrystals have good monodispersity and high crystallinity, as well as other related superior properties, e.g., strong photoluminescence and excellent photocatalytic activities. Also the crystal size can be conveniently adjusted in the range below 10 nm through controlling the reaction temperature. Besides that, this method also shows other distinct advantages compared with other methods reported previously. First, the preparation process is simple and cheap and does not contain any complicated posttreatment procedure. Second, products (without coating) can be collected from the organic phase which effectively avoids grain aggregation induced by the capillary concentration in the water environment. Third, the production yield is very high (almost 100%) and the organic and water phases after reaction can be easily recycled for next reaction. Therefore, it provides a promising strategy for the large-scale industrial production of different kinds of high-quality inorganic nanocrystals.

Abstract:A simple and effective approach to the aqueous phase synthesis of crystalline silver nanorods and nanowires is demonstrated, using which their diameters and spect ratios can be effectively controlled. The synthesis involves a template-less and non-seed process to high-quality nanoparticles, which is low-cost and proceeds at moderate temperatures. The nanorods and nanowires were synthesized by the reduction of silver nitrate with tri-sodium citrate in the presence of sodium dodecylsulfonate. The concentration of tri-sodium citrate plays a critical role while sodium dodecylsulfonate, as a capping agent, only plays an assistant role in controlling the diameters and aspect rations of the products. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) investigations show that the silver nanocrystals are generated with a twinned crystalline structure. We also put forward a primary experimental model to shed light on their growth mechanisms.

Abstract:Abstract Practical, efficient synthesis of metal oxide nanocrystals with good crystallinity and high specific surface area by a modified polymer-network gel method is demonstrated, taking ZnO nanocrystals as an example. A novel stepwise heat treatment yields significant improvement in crystal quality. Such nanophase materials can effectively degrade common organic dyes under solar radiation and can perform very well in photo-assisted detection of NO 2 gas. Other typical metal oxide nanocrystals with good crystallinity and high specific surface area were also synthesized successfully under similar conditions. This work provides a general strategy for the synthesis of metal oxide nanocrystals, balancing the crystallinity and specific surface area.

Abstract:Noble metal nanoparticles with hollow interiors and customizable shell compositions have immense potential for a wide variety of applications. Herein, we present a facile, general, and cost-effective strategy for the synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles with hollow structures, which is based on the inside-out diffusion of Ag in solid-state core-shell nanoparticles. This approach starts with the preparation of core-shell nanoparticles with Ag residing in the core region, which are then loaded on a solid substrate and aged in air to allow the inside-out diffusion of Ag from the core region, leading to the formation of monometallic or alloy noble metal nanoparticles with a hollow interior. The synthesis was carried out at room temperature and could be achieved on different solid substrates. In particular, the inside-out diffusion of Ag calls for specific concern with respect to the evaluation of the catalytic performance of the Ag-based core-shell nanoparticles since it may potentially interfere with the physical and chemical properties of the core-shell particles.

Abstract:Metal species have a relatively high mobility inside mesoporous silica; thus, it is difficult to introduce the metal precursors into silica mesopores and suppress the migration of metal species during a reduction process. Therefore, until now, the controlled growth of metal nanocrystals in a confined space, i.e., mesoporous channels, has been very challenging. Here, by using a soft-enveloping reaction at the interfaces of the solid, liquid, and solution phases, we successfully control the growth of metallic nanocrystals inside a mesoporous silica template. Diverse monodispersed nanostructures with well-defined sizes and shapes, including Ag nanowires, 3D mesoporous Au, AuAg alloys, Pt networks, and Au nanoparticle superlattices are successfully obtained. The 3D mesoporous AuAg networks exhibit enhanced catalytic activities in an electrochemical methanol oxidation reaction. The current soft-enveloping synthetic strategy offers a robust approach to synthesize diverse mesoporous metal nanostructures that can be utilized in catalysis, optics, and biomedicine applications.

Abstract:Core–shell and hollow nanostructures have been receiving significant interest due to their potential in wide scientific and technological fields. Given such large scope, however, they still lag far behind in terms of the ambition toward controllably, or even programmatically, synthesizing libraries of core–shell structures on a large scale. Here, a general route for the programmable preparation of complex core–shell nanostructures by using liquid metal (LM) droplets as reformable templates is presented, and the triggering of a localized galvanic replacement reaction in one ultrasonication system is demonstrated. Benefiting from the activity and mobility of the metal components in LM templates, high‐level compositional diversity control and quantitative regulation of both the core and the shell layers of the heterogeneous products are achieved, which cannot be realized with a solid‐template synthetic route.

Abstract:Phase transfer techniques possess remarkable advantages for the synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials. In contrast to the abundant reports on the preparation of noble metal nanoparticles using phase transfer, the number of semiconductor nanocrystals syntheses based on phase transfer techniques is still limited. Herein, we report a systematic study of the phase transfer-based synthesis of HgS nanocrystals, including the tuning of their morphology/shape by either solvent choice or temperature. This strategy involves the transfer of Hg(II) ions from aqueous solution to toluene, oleic acid or oleylamine and subsequent sulfidation at room or elevated temperature. Furthermore, we have extended this phase-transfer based strategy to the fabrication of HgS-Au nanocomposites. The studies in this work might provide a facile route for producing HgS nanocrystals with desirable properties and offer an effective strategy to investigate the influence of the morphology of HgS on the physical/chemical properties of various HgS-based materials.
A Selenium-Mediated Layer-by-layer Synthetic Strategy for Multilayered Multicomponent Nanocrystals

Abstract:Ordered heterostructured nanocrystals with large compositional and morphological diversity are important for many applications. However, design of multicomponent nanostructures at the atomic level is difficult due to the elusive nucleation and growth processes in a solution-phase environment. Here we report a modular synthetic protocol that produces ordered multilayered nanostructures with small particle size by layer-by-layer growth. We introduce a selenium capping agent to hinder self-assembly, aggregation and phase segregation of nanostructures, while also sequencing the priority of metal atoms that migrate in the substrate lattice according to different metal-selenium bonding strengths, leading to a layer-by-layer growth for ordered nanostructures. The multilayered multicomponent nanocrystals are demonstrated in an alkaline polymer electrolyte fuel cell by using PtRuZn-SKE (SKE, selenium-mediated Kirkendall effect) as the anodic hydrogen oxidation reaction catalyst, which can deliver a high peak power density of 1.52 W cm-2 in H2-O2 and 1.12 W cm-2 in H2-air (CO2-free) while operating at 600 mA cm-2 for 100 h. This generalizable strategy provides a predictable synthetic pathway to complex nanocrystals. A modular synthetic procedure is reported in which a selenium capping agent hinders phase segregation and aggregation while sequencing the priority of metals that migrate into the substrate lattice, leading to a layer-by-layer growth of ordered nanostructures.
