The numerical solutions of the initial value problem of the generalized Hirota-Satsuma coupled KdV equation are provided. Abstract:A new modification of the Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM) is presented for highly nonlinear ODEs on a semi-infinite domain. The main advantage of the modified HAM is that the number of terms in the series solution can be greatly reduced; meanwhile the accuracy of the solution can be well retained. In this way, much less CPU is needed. Two typical examples are used to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed approach.

Abstract:The Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV) is a mathematical model of waves on shallow water surfaces and it possesses both the periodic solutions (travelling wave solutions) and the solitary wave solutions. It is one of the most frequently encountered equations in the field of fluid mechanics due to its significant nature in physical context, stratified internal waves, ion-acoustic wave and plasma physics. The delay system has potential applications in waves as well and several works have been done for particular cases [1]. While the analytically periodic solutions with high precision can hardly obtained and such work has not been reported before. In this paper, we shall develop a newly analytical approach based on the homotopy analysis method (HAM) to such wave problems with delay system. With this method, it is expected to capture the analytical approximations with high accuracy and a general approach for such problems can be established systematically.

Abstract:In this paper, the non-linear approximate technique called Homotopy Analysis Method proposed by Liao is further improved by introducing a non-zero parameter into the traditional way of constructing a homotopy. The 2D viscous laminar flow over an infinite flat-plain governed by the non-linear differential equation f′''(η) + f(η)f″(η)2 = 0 with boundary conditions f(0) = f′(0) = 0, f′(+ ∞) = 1 is used as an example to describe its basic ideas. As a result, a family of approximations is obtained for the above-mentioned problem, which is much more general than the power series given by Blasius [Z. Math. Phys. 36, 1(1908)] and can converge even in the whole region η ϵ [0, + ∞). Moreover, the Blasius' solution is only a special case of ours. We also obtain the second-derivative of f(η) at η = 0, i.e. f″(0) = 0.33206, which is exactly the same as the numerical result given by Howarth [Proc. Roy. Soc. London A164, 547 (1938)].

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new homotopy-wavelet approach to solve linear and nonlinear problems with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. The essence of this technique is to apply the homotopy analysis method (HAM) to transform the governing equations into a set of linear equations and employ the generalized Coiflet-type orthogonal wavelet to express and solve the resulting linear equations. The proposed technique is expected to keep the superiority of the HAM for handling nonlinearities, but with better computational efficiency. The nonhomogeneous boundary conditions including the mixed Dirichlet-Neumann and Robin conditions are reconstructed by introducing the Coiflets on the boundaries, which overcomes the deficiency of the close wavelet method that is difficult to handle the nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. Illustrative examples show very high efficiency of our proposed technique. Furthermore, the classic problem of the incompressible flow in a 2-D lid-driven cavity are investigated. By reconstructing the incompatible boundary conditions with the Coiflets, the singularities of velocity field on rigid points are successfully eliminated so that the vortex on the lid that is difficult to be obtained by previous approaches can be captured clearly. Comparison with previous results is made, excellent agreement is found. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, two types of fractional nonlinear equations in Caputo sense, time fractional Newell-Whitehead equation (FNWE) and time fractional generalized Hirota-Satsuma coupled KdV system (HS-cKdVS), are investigated by means of q-homotopy analysis method (q-HAM). The approximate solutions of proposed equations are constructed in the form of convergent series and are compared with the corresponding exact solutions. Due to the presence of the auxiliary parameter h in this method, just few terms of the series solution are required in order to obtain better approximation. For the sake of the visualization, the numerical results obtained in this paper are graphically displayed with the help of Maple.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide an effective technique to treat nonlinear differential equations with linear boundary conditions that are reduced from a nonlinear problem describing the steady-state boundary-layer flow of a micropolar fluid near the forward stagnation point of a two-dimensional plane surface. The analytical approximations with high accuracy are obtained using the homotopy analysis method, which agree well with the numerical results. Abstract:A powerful, easy-to-use analytic tool for nonlinear problems in general, namely the homotopy analysis method, is further improved and systematically described through a typical nonlinear problem, i.e. the algebraically decaying viscous boundary layer flow due to a moving sheet. Two rules, the rule of solution expression and the rule of coefficient ergodicity, are proposed, which play important roles in the frame of the homotopy analysis method and simplify its applications in science and engineering. An explicit analytic solution is given for the first time, with recursive formulas for coefficients. This analytic solution agrees well with numerical results and can be regarded as a definition of the solution of the considered nonlinear problem. (C) 2002 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Using the boundary layer flows over a permeable plate as an example, we show that the homotopy analysis method (HAM) can be applied to give series solutions of all branches of multiple solutions, even if these multiple solutions are very close and thus rather difficult to distinct even by numerical techniques. A new branch of solutions is found, which has never been reported. This indicates that the homotopy analysis method is a powerful tool for strongly nonlinear problems, especially for those having multiple solutions.

Abstract:Based on the homotopy analysis method (HAM), an analytic approach is proposed for highly nonlinear periodic oscillating equations with absolute value terms. The nonsmoothness of absolute value terms is handled by means of Fourier expansion, and the convergence is accelerated by using the iteration method. Two typical examples which can not be solved by the method of averaging of perturbation technique are employed to illustrate the validity and flexibility of this approach. Rather, accurate approximations are obtained using the HAM-based approach. The proposed approach has general meanings and thus can be used to solve many highly nonlinear periodic oscillating systems with this type of nonsmoothness of absolute value term.

Abstract:The Coiflet wavelet-homotopy Galerkin method is extended to solve un-steady nonlinear wave equations for the first time. The Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, the Burgers equation and the Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers (KdVB) equation are examined as illustrative examples. Validity and accuracy of the proposed method are assessed in terms of relative variance and the maximum error norm. Our results are found in good agreement with exact solutions and numerical solutions reported in previous studies. Furthermore, it is found that the solution accuracy is closely related to the resolution level and the convergence-control parameter. It is also found that our proposed method is superior to the traditional homotopy analysis method when deal-ing with unsteady nonlinear problems. It is expected that this approach can be further used to solve complicated unsteady problems in the fields of science and engineering.

Abstract:This paper reports the explicit analytical solutions for Kolmogorov’s equations. Kolmogorov’s equations are commonly used to describe the structure of local isotropic turbulence, but their exact analytical solutions have not yet been found. In this paper, the closed-form solutions for two kinds of Kolmogorov’s equations are obtained. The derivations of the approximate solutions are based on the homotopy analysis method, which is a new tool for obtaining the approximate analytical solutions of both strong and weak nonlinear differential equations. To examine the validity of the approximate solutions, numerical comparisons between results from the homotopy analysis method and the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method are carried out. It is shown that the results are in good agreement.

Abstract:A powerful, easy-to-use analytic technique for nonlinear problems, namely the Homotopy analysis method, is applied to solve the Vakhnenko equation, a nonlinear equation with loop soliton solutions governing the propagation of high-frequency waves in a relaxing medium. By means of the transformation of independent variables, an analysis one-loop soliton solution expressed by a series of exponential functions is obtained, which agrees well with the exact solution. This indicates the validity and great potential of the Homotopy analysis method in solving complicated solitary wave problems.

Abstract:In this paper, a one-step optimal approach is proposed to improve the computational efficiency of the homotopy analysis method (HAM) for nonlinear problems. A generalized homotopy equation is first expressed by means of a unknown embedding function in Taylor series, whose coefficient is then determined one by one by minimizing the square residual error of the governing equation. Since at each order of approximation, only one algebraic equation with one unknown variable is solved, the computational efficiency is significantly improved, especially for high-order approximations. Some examples are used to illustrate the validity of this one-step optimal approach, which indicate that convergent series solution can be obtained by the optimal homotopy analysis method with much less CPU time. Using this one-step optimal approach, the homotopy analysis method might be applied to solve rather complicated differential equations with strong nonlinearity.

Abstract:The homotopy analysis method (HAM) is applied to a nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) emerging from a closure model of the von Karman-Howarth equation which models the decay of isotropic turbulence. In the infinite Reynolds number limit, the von Karman-Howarth equation admits a symmetry reduction leading to the aforementioned one-parameter ODE. Though the latter equation is not fully integrable, it can be integrated once for two particular parameter values and, for one of these values, the relevant boundary conditions can also be satisfied. The key result of this paper is that for the generic case, HAM is employed such that solutions for arbitrary parameter values are derived. We obtain explicit analytical solutions by recursive formulas with constant coefficients, using some transformations of variables in order to express the solutions in polynomial form. We also prove that the Loitsyansky invariant is a conservation law for the asymptotic form of the original equation.

Abstract:We describe, very briefly, the basic ideas and current developments of the homotopy analysis method, an analytic approach to get convergent series solutions of strongly nonlinear problems, which recently attracts interests of more and more researchers. Definitions of some new concepts such as the homotopy-derivative, the convergence-control parameter and so on, are given to redescribe the method more rigorously. Some lemmas and theorems about the homotopy-derivative and the deformation equation are proved. Besides, a few open questions are discussed, and a hypothesis is put forward for future studies.

Abstract:We propose a numerical method for finding solitary wave solutions of generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations by solving the nonlinear eigenvalue problem on an unbounded domain. The artificial boundary conditions are obtained to make the domain finite. We specially discuss the soliton solutions of the K(m,n) equation and KdV–K(m,n) equation. Furthermore for the mixed models of linear and nonlinear dispersion, the collision behaviors of soliton–soliton and soliton–antisoliton are observed.
