Abstract:This paper proposes a thermal management strategy for proton exchange membrane fuel cell based on nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC). To handle the highly coupled and nonlinear nature of the thermal management system, we adopt NARMAX model and introduce BP neural network to fit the nonlinear prediction model. Then in rolling optimization stage, an optimization problem consisting of two inputs and single output is established, for which an improved particle swarm optimization method is employed in combination with a mutation mechanism and an improved parameter update mechanism. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed NMPC-based thermal management strategy.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) s are faced with dynamical load scenario in practical applications, and the resulting temperature variation will decrease the performance and consequently shorten the fuel cell lifetime. To address this problem, a control strategy for regulating the stack temperature is proposed in this paper. Firstly, a thermal management-oriented dynamic model of a water-cooled PEMFC system is built to facilitate the control design. Secondly, considering that the stack temperature should be maintained in a certain range regardless of the dynamical changing current demand, a Barrier Lyapunov function is employed to construct a feedback error of the stack temperature. Thirdly, a set of adaptation laws is designed to estimate the unknown parameters related to the gas flow rates in the flow fields. Particularly, a dynamic inversion tracking methodology is applied to design the non-affine input. A Lyapunov method based analysis demonstrates the stability and convergence of the closed-loop properties. Simulation results are provided to show that the proposed control strategy can satisfy all the control objectives and enhance the control performance compared to the proportional-integral controlled case.

Abstract:Temperature and humidity are two important interconnected factors in the performance of PEMFCs (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells). The fuel and oxidant humidity and stack temperature in a fuel cell were analyzed in this study. There are many factors that affect the temperature and humidity of the stack. We adopt the fuzzy control method of multi-input and multi-output to control the temperature and humidity of the stack. A model including a driver, vehicle, transmission motor, air feeding, electrical network, stack, hydrogen supply and cooling system was established to study the fuel cell performance. A fuzzy controller is proven to be better in improving the output power of fuel cells. The three control objectives are the fan speed control for regulating temperature, the solenoid valve on/off control of the bubble humidifier for humidity variation and the speed of the pump for regulating temperature difference. In addition, the results from the PID controller stack model and the fuzzy controller stack model are compared in this research. The fuel cell bench test has been built to validate the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy control. The maximum temperature of the stack can be reduced by 5 °C with the fuzzy control in this paper, so the fuel cell output voltage (power) increases by an average of approximately 5.8%.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are considered as one of the most promising power sources for transportation in the near future. Proper and robust thermal management is a key issue in fuel cell applications. This paper mainly studies the sensor fault detection and isolation (FDI) and fault tolerant control (FTC) for the thermal management of PEMFC systems. The thermal model of fuel cell is established and analyzed by structure analysis, and the residual generator of sensor faults are designed by Dulmage-Mendelsohn decomposition to rearrange the biadjacency matrix of the thermal model. A sliding-mode-based active FTC (AFTC) strategy is proposed for the thermal management of fuel cell systems. The effectivenesses of the proposed FDI method and AFTC strategy are verified on a fuel cell test bench. The experimental results show that the temperature of the PEMFC stack can be maintained at the reference value with high accuracy even when sensor fails.

Abstract:As one of the most promising sustainable energy technologies available today, proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) engines are becoming more and more popular in various applications, especially in transportation vehicles. However, the complexity and the severity of the vehicle operating conditions present challenges to control the tem-perature distribution in single cells and stack, which is an important factor influencing the performance and durability of PEMFC engines. It has been found that regulating the input and output coolant water temperature can improve the temperature distribution. There-fore, the control objective in this paper is regulating the input and output temperature of coolant water at the same time. Firstly, a coupled model of the thermal management system is established based on the physical structure of PEMFC engines. Then, in order to realize the simultaneous control of the inlet and outlet cooling water temperature of the PEMFC stack, a decoupling controller is proposed and its closed-loop stability is proved. Finally, based on the actual PEMFC engine platform, the effectiveness, accuracy and reli-ability of the proposed decoupling controller are tested. The experimental results show that with the proposed decoupling controller, the inlet and outlet temperatures of the PEMFC stack cooling water can be accurately controlled on-line. Abstract:Temperature is a key factor affecting the efficiency and safety of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. It is especially important to keep the fuel cell stack temperature stable under the operating conditions where the load current changes frequently. Firstly, a nonlinear model of the stack and cooling system is developed for a 50kW commercial fuel cell system. Then, a series of local models are established at different operating points to accurately describe the nonlinear characteristics of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system. Finally, a multi-model predictive control method based on an adaptive switching strategy is proposed. The simulation results show that the temperature overshoot can be controlled within 1K in the operating range of 50-200A. Compared with the PID and model predictive control(MPC) methods, the multi-model predictive control(MMPC) method has better robustness.

Abstract:Control aims to avoid oxygen starvation and maximize the net power output by maintaining the optimal oxygen excess ratio (OER), which varies between 1.8 and 2.5. Because of the nonlinearity of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) air supply system and the different conditions, ensuring an optimal OER is still a challenge. In this study, a model-free adaptive controller is presented for the PEMFC air supply system based on feedback linearization and interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems (IT2 FLSs). Theoretical analysis and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme. For the theoretical analysis, first, the PEMFC air supply system is transformed into a canonical form with the feedback linearization technique. Then, zero-dynamics stability is discussed in detail to determine the stability of the internal dynamics. Finally, an adaptive interval type-2 fuzzy logic system controller (AIT2FLSC) is designed on the basis of the Lyapunov stability theory, which does not require complete <i>a priori</i> knowledge of the system dynamics. For the experimental results, the root mean square error (RMSE), variance, and standard deviation (SD) of the tracking error are used as tracking performance metrics to evaluate the control accuracy of the proposed AIT2FLSC, which are 0.0968, 0.0093, and 0.0962, respectively. Compared with the traditional proportion integration differentiation controller (RMSE 0.1119, variance 0.0122, and SD 0.1105), this proposed algorithm obtains better adaptability and the RMSE of the tracking error improves 13.48%. Compared with the adaptive type-1 fuzzy logic system controller (AT1FLSC) (RMSE 0.1076, variance 0.0113, and SD 0.1063), this AT2FLSC has a stronger ability to deal with uncertainty and the RMSE of the tracking error improves 10% when the stack temperature is fixed (353.15 K). Furthermore, when the stack temperature is time-varying, the RMSE, variance, and SD of the tracking error under the AIT2FLSC are 0.0966, 0.0092, and 0.0960, respectively, which is less than AT1FLSC (0.1085, 0.0115, and 0.1073) and the RMSE of the tracking error improves 10.99%.

Abstract:The temperature distribution is crucial to the safety and lifespan of fuel cell stacks.A dynamic model was developed to analyze the thermal management subsystem of a proton exchange membrane(PEM) fuel cell system.The prediction-based smart PID control algorithm considers the large inertia and large phase delay of the coolant temperature control with a simplified model for the thermal system to predict the stack temperature variations and to minimize the overshoot by ahead-oftime control.Simulations and tests show that the control algorithm performs well with temperature variations less than ±0.5℃.

Abstract:To improve fuel utilization of HT-PEMFC (high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell), which normally operates under dead-end mode, with properly periodical purging to flush out the accumulated water vapour in the anode flow-field is necessary, otherwise the performance of HT-PEMFC would drop gradually. In this paper, a semi-empirical dynamic voltage model of HT-PEMFC is developed for controller design purpose via fitting the experimental data and validated with experimental results. Then, a fuzzy controller is designed to schedule the purging based on the obtained model. According to the result, the developed model well reflects transient characteristics of HT-PEMFC voltage and the fuzzy controller offers good performance for purging scheduling under uncertain load demands.

Abstract:In this part of the paper, linear and nonlinear multivariable controllers are designed for the air stream and hydrogen flow with recirculation in a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell system. The focus of the model is to obtain the desired transient performance of air stoichiometric ratio, cathode inlet pressure, and pressure difference between the anode and the cathode. Based on linearization of the nonlinear dynamic model in the first part of this paper, the coupling between control inputs and performance is analyzed first. The phase relationship between the stack voltage and water transport in frequency domain is meaningful to the future humidity estimation and active purge operation. Then, linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) algorithm based on observer feedback is used for set-point tracking, and a model-predictive controller (MPC) with an on-line neural network identifier is also designed to improve robustness. Compared with decentralized PI controllers, the multivariable controllers improve the transient response and shows better disturbance rejection capability.

Abstract:The proton exchange membrane fuel cell has become the most widely used fuel cell in fuel cell vehicles. An effective and accurate control approach for its air supply system is crucial to ensure the performance and safety of the fuel cell system. In order to ensure safe and efficient operation of the air supply, this paper provides a novel modeling and control method based on Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy theory and predictive control. A local controlled autoregressive integrated moving average model for the air flow control is put forward, then the control-oriented T-S model is designed based on multi-model scheduling. The controller architecture is based on a fuzzy generalized predictive controller. The proposed controller can control the oxygen excess ratio in the ideal range and effectively suppress the fluctuation caused by the load change. In addition, an optimal control strategy is proposed aiming at avoiding the oxygen starvation and maximizing the system net power. According to the control results, the proposed method is proved to be able to accurately control the air supply at desire values. It enhances system output performance by fast response to better support the vehicle load variation, and improving the net power and system energy efficiency.

Abstract:The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is the most widely used fuel cell, but it also has some limitations. One of the research pain points is controlling the oxygen content in PEMFCs. A moderate excess of oxygen boosts electrochemical reaction efficiency, while an appropriate oxygen content ensures system stability. In this paper, a fourth-order nonlinear mathematical model of a PEMFC stack air supply system is established to solve the problem of optimal oxygen excess ratio (OER) control under dynamic load conditions. Based on the model, a nonsingular terminal sliding mode controller (NTSMC) based on a sliding mode observer (SMO) is proposed. The NTSM exhibits superior robustness and performance compared to other sliding mode structures. Meanwhile, the SMO accurately predicts system states, facilitating precise control actions. Additionally, the dual sliding mode surfaces enhance system stability against parameter uncertainties and external disturbances. Our results demonstrate that the proposed controller outperforms traditional ones in terms of robustness and performance, which significantly enhances PEMFC system efficiency and stability.

Abstract:A 300W open cathode proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is used as the dependable power source and lots of experiments are carried out to investigate the temperature characteristic of open cathode PEMFC. The effect of operating temperature on the output performance is analyzed through experiments data. An optimum operation temperature trajectory is obtained by a polynomial fitting method. Furthermore, an incremental PID control method is applied to design a PEMFC control system according to the characteristic of optimal operation temperature. The results verify that the optimum operation temperature trajectory with various loads can be tracked by proposed control system and the optimal output performance of PEMFC can be achieved.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel adaptive model predictive control (AMPC) algorithm is proposed for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) to improve its output power tracking performance in DC microgrids. The proposed AMPC algorithm is capable of producing superior PEMFC control performance over the conventional MPC and PI controllers. Compared with PI control, AMPC is able to handle physical constraints, which ensures the safe operation of PEMFC under different conditions. Furthermore, it overcomes the common problem of system model dependence that is shared by nearly all the model-based control methods. The convergence of parameter estimation in the proposed AMPC is rigorously proved. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm under various operating conditions and system parameter variations are verified by simulation results.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to design a thermal management system to address the temperature regulation and fluctuation of an open-cathode proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. A model predictive control (MPC) approach is newly proposed to command of blowers in the fuel cell. First, a thermal management-oriented model of the fuel cell is set up, and linearized by using Taylor formula. Then, the closed-loop feedback MPC according to the linearized state-space model is developed. An experimental test rig via LabVIEW-based thermal control system prototype is configured. Finally, different load current tests were applied to verify the effectiveness, and the performance of the MPC controller was compared with a traditional PI controller. The results of this study demonstrate that the proposed MPC can effectively manipulate the stack temperature to track the reference trajectory under the constant current as well as dynamic load schedules. In particular, in a combined driving cycle equivalent test condition, the fuel cell temperature reached to the target after a settling time of 146.6 s, and temperature fluctuations were less than ±0.5 °C with the MAE value of 0.223 and the RMSE value of 0.346.

Abstract:A nonlinear fuel cell system dynamic model that is suitable for control study is presented. The transient phenomena captured in the model include the flow characteristics and inertia dynamics of the compressor, the manifold filling dynamics, and consequently, the reactant partial pressures. Characterization of the fuel cell polarization curves based on time varying current, partial oxygen and hydrogen pressures, temperature, membrane hydration allows analysis and simulation of the transient fuel cell power generation. An observer based feedback and feedforward controller that manages the tradeoff between reduction of parasitic losses and fast fuel cell net power response during rapid current (load) demands is designed.

Abstract:Effective control strategies of air supply system are the key to guaranteeing reliability and efficiency of the operation of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system. The novelty of this article is to design a fuzzy proportion-integral-derivative (PID) controller for the PEMFC air supply system combining the feedforward decoupled method. Aiming at strong coupling of parameters in the air supply system, we have proposed a feedforward decoupled controller to achieve independent control of air flow and pressure, so that the entire system can get better control effect. Aiming at time-varying, hysteresis, and randomness of interference in the air supply system, we have designed a fuzzy-PID controller based on the decoupled controller to achieve better dynamic response and stability, so that the possibility of air starvation can be reduced and the stack durability can be improved. The step load test reveals that the time to reach steady state, the overshoot, and the steady-state error are much smaller under the decoupled fuzzy-PID control compared that under the decoupled PID control. The New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) test further verifies that the system with the decoupled fuzzy-PID controller can quickly follow the variable load demand without system response oscillation and steady-state error.

Abstract:This paper addresses the issues of nonlinearity and coupling between anode pressure and cathode pressure in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) gas supply systems. A fuzzy adaptive PI decoupling control strategy with an improved advanced genetic algorithm (AGA) is proposed. This AGA s utilized to optimize the PI parameters offline, and the fuzzy adaptive algorithm s used to adjust the PI parameters dynamically online to achieve the approximate decoupling control of the PEMFC gas supply system. According to the proposed dynamic model, the PEMFC gas supply system with the fuzzy–AGA–PI decoupling control method was simulated for comparison. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed control system can reduce the pressure difference more efficiently with the classical control method under different load changes.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) constitute nonlinear systems that are challenging to model accurately. Therefore, a controller with robustness and adaptability is imperative for temperature control within the PEMFC stack. This paper introduces a data-driven controller utilizing deep reinforcement learning for stack temperature control. Given the PEMFC system's characteristics, such as nonlinearity, uncertainty, and environmental conditions, we propose a novel deep reinforcement learning algorithm—the deep deterministic policy gradient with priority experience playback and importance sampling method (PEI-DDPG). Algorithm design incorporates technologies such as priority experience playback, importance sampling, and optimized sample data storage structure, enhancing the controller's performance. Simulation results demonstrate the proposed algorithm's superior effectiveness in temperature control for PEMFC, leveraging the PEI-DDPG algorithm's high adaptability and robustness. The proposed algorithm's effectiveness is additionally validated on the RT-LAB experimental platform. The proposed PEI-DDPG algorithm reduces the average adjustment time by 8.3%, 17.13%, and 24.56% and overshoots by 2.12 times, 4.16 times, and 4.32 times compared to the TD3, GA-PID, and PID algorithms, respectively.

Abstract:A nonlinear model of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) based on an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is proposed to study different operational conditions effect on the dynamic response of Ballard 1.2kW Nexa power module. A hybrid learning algorithm combining back propagation (BP) and least squares estimate (LSE) is adopted to identify the parameters of input and output membership functions for the improvement of training efficiency in the ANFIS. The comparisons with the experimental data demonstrate that the obtained ANFIS model can efficiently approximate the dynamic output response of Nexa power module and is capable of predicting dynamic performance in terms of stack output voltage with a high accuracy.
