Abstract:Objective:To investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics of early gastric cancer in the aged. Methods:Clinical data of 122 early gastric cancer in the aged diagnosed by endoscopy from January 1995 to October 2005 were retrospectively analyzed. Results:There were 95 males and 27 females with mean age of 73.77±8.26 years. Tumor was located in antrum, corpus, angulus, cardia, fundus in 50, 24, 22, 20 and 6 cases, respectively. The size of 12 tumors was less than 5 mm and of 34 tumors was 5-10 mm. The predominant macroscopic type under endoscopy was Ⅱc (64 cases) and Ⅱa+Ⅱc (25 cases). Pathalogical feature: papillary adenocarcinoma of 5 cases, tubular adenocarcinoma of 67 cases, poorly-differentiated adenocarcinoma of 26 cases, signet-ring cell carcinoma of 7 cases, mucinous adenocarcinoma of 12 cases and undifferentiated carcinoma of 5 cases. Conclusions:These results indicated that the majority of early gastric cancer in the elderly had atypical symptoms, located in antrum and corpus, was type Ⅱc macroscopically and was differentiated-type adenocarcinoma. These findings have important implications for the screening and diagnosis of early gastric cancer in the elderly.
