Abstract:Morphosynthesis strategies inspired by biomineralization processes gives access to a wide range of fascinating and useful crystalline mesostructures 1 , 2 , 3 . Biomimetic synthesis of inorganic materials with complex shapes can now be used to control the nucleation, tensorial growth, and alignment of inorganic crystals in a way previously not practicable 3 . Double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs) 4 consisting of a hydrophilic block strongly interacting with inorganic minerals, and a non-interacting hydrophilic block, were recently introduced for the control of mineralization reactions. DHBCs are 'improved versions' of the previously used polyelectrolytes or amphiphiles and are extraordinarily effective in crystallization control 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 . Here, we report on the formation of helices of achiral BaCO 3 nanocrystals in the presence of a racemic DHBC suggesting that a helical alignment can be induced by racemic polymers through selective adsorption on the (110) face of nanocrystals. This mechanism is the key for a better understanding of the self-assembly of chiral organic–inorganic superstructures that don't follow a direct template route.
Morphology and Crystallinity Control of Novel Spider Silk-like Block Copolymer

Abstract:A new family of A-B di-block copolymers based on the amino acid sequences of Nephila clavipes major ampulate dragline spider silk, which have a strong potential for applications in tissue regeneration and drug delivery, was synthesized and characterized. The morphology was assessed by SEM: HBA3 formed fibrillar structure and 2 μm diameter hollow micelles, while HBA4 and HBA6 formed hollow micelles in water solution. The secondary structures of water-cast spider silk-like block copolymer films were assessed by FTIR. The crystallinity was determined by Fourier self-deconvolution of the amide I spectra and confirmed by wide angle X-ray diffraction. Results indicate that the self-assembled morphology and the crystallinity can be varied by changing the length of A-block, and a minimum of 3 A-blocks are required to form β sheet crystalline regions in water-cast spider silk block copolymers. A theoretical model was used to predict the specific reversing heat capacity, Cp(T), which is crucial to the design of smart biomaterials. Excellent agreement was found between the theoretical value and the Cp(T) determined by temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry. This method can serve as a standard by which to assess the thermal properties for other biologically inspired block copolymers, and then be further applied to control the biological interactions for use in drug delivery and smart biomaterials applications.

Abstract:The orientation and spatial distribution of nanocrystals in the organic matrix are two distinctive structural characteristics associated with natural bone. Synthetic soft materials have been used to successfully control the orientation of mineral crystals. The spatial distribution of minerals in a synthetic scaffold, however, has yet to be reproduced in a biomimetic manner. Herein, we report using block copolymer-decorated polymer nanofibers to achieve biomineralized fibrils with precise control of both mineral crystal orientation and spatial distribution. Exquisite nanoscale structural control in biomimetic hybrid materials has been demonstrated.

Abstract:Inspired by mineralization in biological organisms, fabrication of higher ordered inorganic crystals induced by polymer chains has received much attention. In our present work, we made use of a widely used industrial material, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), to mediate the nucleation and growth of barium carbonate (BaCO3). We calculated the interactions between CM C chains and crystalline needle-like units of BaCO3 by molecular dynamic simulation, concluding that the (111) face of crystalline units is the most favorable face for CMC chains to attach onto. Based on the simulation results and the time-resolved experiments, we suggested the dumbbell-like BaCO3 aggregates formed via polymer induced stacking of needle-like units. More importantly, we realized control over the morphology of aggregates from dumbbell-like to spherical particles by simply adjusting the polymer concentration. By clarifying the aggregation mechanism mediated by polymer chains, we demonstrate here not only a simple method to fabricate BaCO3 particles with controllable morphologies but also a reference work which may serve the exploration of the mechanism in biomineralization.

Abstract:The authors report the first preparation of high-density ultrafine green-emitting wool-like BaCO3 nanowires, having an average diameter of 18.5 nm, and an average crystallite size of 13.4 nm, by an electrospinning method with a subsequent two-step calcination approach. A possible vapor–solid interaction mechanism was proposed for the finest nanowires growth, where the reactive carbon dioxide vapors were generated during the static atmosphere ambient calcination and assisted oxidization nucleation at enhanced temperatures. Our work provides new insights into electrospun fiber diameter refinement via controlled calcination, and this simple post-electrospinning controlled strategy can be generally applied to other metal carbonate ultrafine NWs families.

Abstract:A novel copolymer, β-cyclodextrin-b-poly(l-glutamic acid) (β-CD-b-PLGA), was synthesized by ring-opening polymerization and subsequent hydrolysis reaction. The β-CD-b-PLGA copolymer possesses an oligosaccharide β-CD segment and a polypeptide PLGA segment, with chemical structure resembling natural glycoprotein. The copolymers were applied in regulating the crystallization of calcium carbonate. The effects of the concentration of copolymers and calcium ions were systemically investigated. Various morphologies, including rhombohedra, rod, pseudo-dodecahedra and rosette-like structures, were obtained by adjusting the polymer and Ca2+ concentrations of the initial solution. Investigation of the pseudo-dodecahedra growth mechanism indicates that the copolymers mediate amorphous calcium carbonate formation initially, and then regulate the meso-scale self-assembly of CaCO3 subunits. The morphology variation is influenced by the binding of β-CD-b-PLGA chains on specific crystal faces combined with the steric repulsive force of β-CD-b-PLGA chains.

Abstract:Biomimetic mineralization can lead to advanced crystalline composites with common chemicals under ambient conditions. An exceptional example is biomimetic nacre with its superior fracture toughness. The synthesis of the prismatic layer with stiffness and wear resistance nonetheless remains an elusive goal. Herein, we apply a biomimetic mineralization method to grow prismatic-type CaCO3 thin films, mimicking their biogenic counterparts found in mollusk shells with a three-step pathway: coating a polymer substrate, deposition of a granular transition layer, and mineralization of a prismatic overlayer. The synthetic prismatic overlayers exhibit structural similarity and comparable hardness and Young's modulus to their biogenic counterparts. Furthermore, employment of a biomacromolecular soluble additive, silk fibroin, in fabrication of the prismatic thin films leads to micro-/nano-textures with enhanced toughness and emerging under-water superoleophobicity. This study highlights the crucial role of the granular transition layer in promoting competition growth of the prismatic layer.

Abstract:Different morphosynthesis strategies for various metal carbonate minerals such as CaCO3, BaCO3, CdCO3, MnCO3, and PbCO3 using double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs) as crystal modifiers are presented. The influence of the DHBCs with different functionalities such as carboxyl, partially phosphonated, and phosphorylated groups on the crystallization and structure formation was investigated. Well-defined crystals with size range from mesoscale to microscale can be easily obtained. More complex higher-order superstructures such as hollow spheres and big spherules with controlled surface structures can also be assembled conveniently. The results show that polymer-controlled mineralization is a versatile tool toward crystal morphogenesis. A time-dependent self-assembly and growth of "sphere-to-rod-to-dumbbell-to-sphere" structures was observed in the case of BaCO3 under the control of DHBCs, adding to the already reported examples of CaCO3 and fluoroapatite. In addition, we found that the influence of the DHBCs while increasing the ionic strength was lost in case of CaCO3, implying that the strong selective interaction between the functional groups of DHBCs and crystals has electrostatic contributions.

Abstract:Nanocrystal superstructures of barium carbonate (BaCO3) which exhibit unusual morphologies are obtained by the carbon dioxide vapor diffusion technique in the presence of poly(ethylene oxide)-block-eicosa aspartate (PEO-b-Asp(20)). The highly effective bioconjugate acts as a crystal growth modifier over a broad range of concentrations. Instead of commonly observed branched needles, the morphology can be systematically varied along different twinned growth patterns towards well-defined branched dumbbells. Detailed analysis of the crystal substructures with high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) discloses a potential growth mechanism of the superstructures and reveals the role of the polymeric bioconjugate therein.

Abstract:Barium carbonate (BaCO3) crystals with unique hierarchical superstructures have been fabricated through a facile and controlled solution self-assembly mode in the presence of a tri-block copolymer PEO70–PPO20–PEO70 (P123). The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) results revealed that the obtained BaCO3 product was indexed to pure orthorhombic phase. Notably, BaCO3 samples with well-defined hierarchical morphologies, including spherical, rod, hexangular prism, and porous spherical aggregates can be prepared by simply adjusting the polymer P123 concentrations and the ratios of [Ba2+]/[P123]. Specifically, layered screw cap, double-taper, and shuttle-shaped superstructures were formed through choosing N,N-bimethylformamide (DMF), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and/or toluene mixed with de-ionised water (DIW) as the reaction media in the current system, respectively. It is clearly demonstrated that varying liquid crystal-phase aggregating structures of the polymer P123 and using different solvents can indeed exert a significant influence over the selective nucleation, crystal facets preferable adsorption, and consequent over-growth for the BaCO3 primary particles. Moreover, a possible formation process for the hierarchical superstructures of BaCO3 crystals is proposed.

Abstract:We have synthesized an amphiphilic dumbbell-shaped molecule consisting of dodeca-p-phenylene and aliphatic polyether dendrons as flexible end groups. The molecular dumbbell in aqueous solution self-assembles into well-defined left-handed helical cylinders with a diameter (8 nm) of a molecular length scale and a pitch length of 5.6 nm, as confirmed by TEM. These elementary helical fibrils are further assembled to give left-handed superhelical fibers with lengths up to several micrometers. Such a well-defined helical arrangement of conjugated rod building blocks may provide a new strategy for the design of one-dimensional nanostructured materials with biomimetic, electronic, and photonic functions.

Abstract:In this Article, we combine the characters of hyperbranched polymers and the concept of double-hydrophilic block copolymer (DHBC) to design a 3D crystal growth modifier, HPG-COOH. The novel modifier can efficiently control the crystallization of CaCO3 from amorphous nanoparticles to vaterite hollow spheres by a nonclassical crystallization process. The obtained vaterite hollow spheres have a special puffy dandelion-like appearance; that is, the shell of the hollow spheres is constructed by platelet-like vaterite mesocrystals, perpendicular to the globe surface. The cross-section of the wall of a vaterite hollow sphere is similar to that of nacres in microstructure, in which platelet-like calcium carbonate mesocrystals pile up with one another. These results reveal the topology effect of the crystal growth modifier on biomineralization and the essential role of the nonclassical crystallization for constructing hierarchical microstructures.

Abstract:Bio-inspired mineralization is an effective way for fabricating complex inorganic materials, which inspires us to develop new methods to synthesize materials with fascinating properties. In this article, we report that the charged tellurium nanowires (TeNWs) can be used as biomacromolecule analogues to direct the formation of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) nanosheets (ACCNs) in a mixed solvent. The effects of surface charges and the concentration of the TeNWs on the formation of ACCNs have been investigated. Particularly, the produced ACCNs can be functionalized by Fe3O4 nanoparticles to produce magnetic ACC/Fe3O4 hybrid nanosheets that can be used to construct ACC/Fe3O4 composite films through a self-evaporation process. Moreover, sodium alginate-ACC nanocomposite films with remarkable toughness and good transmittance can also be fabricated by using such ACCNs as nanoscale building blocks. This mineralization approach in a mixed solvent using charged TeNWs as biomacromolecule analogues provides a new way for the synthesis of ACCNs, which can be used as nanoscale building blocks for the fabrication of biomimetic composite films.

Abstract:Mineralization behaviour of CaCO3 in the presence of polypeptide vesicles self-assembled from poly(L-glutamic acid)-block-poly(propylene oxide)-block-poly(L-glutamic acid) (PLGA-b-PPO-b-PLGA) triblock copolymers was studied. Under the mediation of PLGA-b-PPO-b-PLGA vesicles, CaCO3 fibre clusters were obtained. The structure of fibres could be regulated by the mineralization temperature, copolymer composition, copolymer concentration, and Ca2+ concentration. The investigation of the fibre growth process suggested a solution–precursor–solid mechanism via transient amorphous precursors. Since the polypeptide vesicles could serve as both the modifier and template for the formation of amorphous precursors, the properties of amorphous precursors were affected by the vesicular structure. The variation in the fibre structure was ascribed to the different aggregation and transformation behaviours of amorphous particles. These findings can provide useful information for the design of novel inorganic materials with fibrous structures and enrich our existing knowledge of the crystallization process from the amorphous phase.
