Abstract:Copper(II)-catalyzed synthesis of sulfones from sulfinate salts and aryl halides was investigated by means of a combination of experiment and DFT calculation. Experimental results demonstrated the wide applicability of the title approach. The reaction mechanisms are revealed by in-situ IR and theoretical study. It reveals remarkable ligand effect the bidentate amine plays in the reaction, that is, it initially activats the C-I bond of iodobenzene so as to enhance the whole catalytic process. Abstract:Three different types of functionalized-CS were prepared and anchored with copper salts for use as the catalyst for the Ullmann C-X coupling reaction. The Schiff-basic chitosan supported copper complex (PCCS@CuI) exhibits the highest catalytic activity. The structure of the catalyst was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, TG, XRD, SEM, EDS and XPS. This catalyst exhibited high applicability for the C-N and C-S coupling reactions, in which good to excellent yields were obtained. Its easy separation, good reusability and stability were notable.

Abstract:A protocol for the copper-catalyzed C–S bond formation between aryl, alkyl, or heteroaryl thiols and aryl or heteroaryl halides is reported. The reaction is catalyzed by Cu2O which shows the highest catalytic activity with ethyl 2-oxocyclohexanecarboxylate ligand in DMSO at 80°C. The corresponding coupling products are obtained with good to excellent yields under relatively mild reaction conditions with good chemoselectivity and functional group tolerance.

Abstract:A three distinct copper cluster complexes (A-C) containing Cu-O ligated Schiff-base ligands were synthesized and bonding was investigated by single crystal X-ray crystallographic studies. These complexes effectively catalyze the C-S cross coupling reaction of less reactive aliphatic thiols to synthesize thioether derivatives. This coupling reaction also tolerates well and compatible with aryl thiols. The peculiar C(sp2)-SC(sp3) bond formation could distinctly took place with high efficiency in low catalyst loading of copper cluster complex catalysts. The present report describes an alternative protocol to construct an active copper cluster complex from readily accessible cheap and efficient ligands. These complexes are air stable, practical, ease to handle and execute C-S coupling reactions with good yields.

Abstract:The Cu(I)-catalyzed olefination of N-sulfonylhydrazones with sulfones via metal carbene intermediates is reported. This reaction uses readily available startingmaterials and is operationally simple, thus representing a practical method for the construction of carbon-carbon double bonds. Mechanistically, Cu(I) carbene formation and subsequent carbene migratory insertion are proposed as the key steps.

Abstract:Diaryl sulfides play an important role in the synthesis of natural products, pharmaceutically and biologically molecules. The metal catalysts are powerful tools for C–S bonds formation. Despite the utility of palladium-catalyzed carbon–sulfur bond formation, copper complexes are fascinating catalysts for this transformation because copper is less toxic and inexpensive than palladium. In recent times, a large number of protocols using various copper catalysts to perform cross-coupling reactions leading to the synthesis of diaryl sulfides have been described. In this review, we summarized recent developments in the area of synthesis of diaryl sulfides based on using copper catalysts. Both the considerable advantages and drawbacks of these protocols are discussed.

Abstract:Although α-chiral C( sp 3 )–S bonds are of enormous importance in organic synthesis and related areas, the transition-metal-catalysed enantioselective C( sp 3 )–S bond construction still represents an underdeveloped domain probably due to the difficult heterolytic metal–sulfur bond cleavage and notorious catalyst-poisoning capability of sulfur nucleophiles. Here we demonstrate the use of chiral tridentate anionic ligands in combination with Cu(I) catalysts to enable a biomimetic enantioconvergent radical C( sp 3 )–S cross-coupling reaction of both racemic secondary and tertiary alkyl halides with highly transformable sulfur nucleophiles. This protocol not only exhibits a broad substrate scope with high enantioselectivity but also provides universal access to a range of useful α-chiral alkyl organosulfur compounds with different sulfur oxidation states, thus providing a complementary approach to known asymmetric C( sp 3 )–S bond formation methods. Mechanistic results support a biomimetic radical homolytic substitution pathway for the critical C( sp 3 )–S bond formation step.

Abstract:An odourless and efficient protocol for the synthesis of benzyl phenyl sulfides was reported. Starting from environmentally friendly phenyldithiocarbamates and commercially available benzyl halides as starting materials, the target compounds (benzyl phenyl sulfides) could be obtained smoothly and easily by using copper salt as catalyst and Cs2CO3 as base. This method features ligand/additive free, the use of readily available starting materials, inexpensive catalysts, and good substrate suitability, illustrating its potential synthetic value for the convenient preparation of some biologically active molecules.

Abstract:A copper-mediated CS/NS bondforming reaction via CH activation that uses elemental sulfur has been developed. The addition of TBAI was found to be crucial for the success of this transformation. The method is scalable, shows excellent functional group tolerance, and is compatible with heterocycle substrates, providing efficient and practical access to benzoisothiazolones. The direct diversification of the benzoisothiazolone products into a variety of sulfur-containing compounds is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Transition-metal-catalyzed decarboxylative and CH functionalization strategy for the construction of Csp2-Csp2, Csp2-Csp, and Csp2-Csp3 bonds has been extensively studied. However, research surveys of this synthetic strategy for the Csp3-Csp3 bond forming reactions are surprisingly scarce. Herein, we present an efficient approach for the rapid formation of Csp3–Csp3 bond through copper-catalyzed decarboxylative Csp3 –H functionalization. The present method should provide a useful access to C3-substituted indole scaffolds with possible biological activities. Mechanistic experiments and DFT calculations supported a dual-Cu(II)-catalytic cycle involving rate-determining decarboxylation in an outer-sphere radical pathway and spin-crossover-promoted CC bond formation. This strategy offers a promising synthesis method for the construction of Csp3–Csp3 bond in the field of synthetic and pharmaceutical chemistry and extends the number of still limited copper-catalyzed decarboxylative Csp3–Csp3 bond forming reaction.

Abstract:Various sulfenylated heteroarenes were synthesized by a copper‐mediated C−H thiolation, which was assisted by a 2‐(pyridin‐2‐yl)isopropylamine (PIP‐amine) directing group. The reaction features a broad substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, ligand‐ and metal‐oxidant‐free conditions, exceptional compatibility with aliphatic disulfides, and excellent yields, providing a highly efficient approach to the biologically important sulfenylated heteroarenes.

Abstract:The functionalization of etheric C–O bonds via C–O bond cleavage is an attractive strategy for the construction of C–C and C–X bonds in organic synthesis. However, these reactions mainly involve the C(sp3)–O bond cleavage, and a catalyst-controlled highly enantioselective version is extremely challenging. Here, we report a copper-catalyzed asymmetric cascade cyclization via C(sp2)–O bond cleavage, allowing the divergent and atom-economic synthesis of a range of chromeno[3,4-c]pyrroles bearing a triaryl oxa-quaternary carbon stereocenter in high yields and enantioselectivities. Importantly, this protocol not only represents the first [1,2]-Stevens-type rearrangement via C(sp2)–O bond cleavage, but also constitutes the first example of [1,2]-aryl migration reactions via vinyl cations.

Abstract:Reported herein is an exceptional chemoselective ring-opening/C(sp(3))@C(sp(3)) bond formation in the copper(I)-catalyzed reaction of cyclopropanols with diazo esters. The conventional O H insertion product is essentially suppressed by judicious choice of reaction conditions. DFT calculations provide insights into the reaction mechanism and the rationale for this unusual chemoselectivity.

Abstract:Copper-catalyzed arylcarbocyclization reaction of alkynes was realized with diaryliodonium salts through C-C bond formation on an inert C(sp3)-H bond. This method provides an efficient cyclization of alkyl alkynes to generate carbocycles with good step-economy. Abstract:Both copper(II)-mediated oxidative C-H bond activation and oxidative addition of copper(I) into a C-I bond produced an identical and structurally well-defined aryl-Cu(III) intermediate. The cross-coupling reaction of an aryl-Cu(III) intermediate with both terminal alkynes at an elevated temperature and alkynyllithium reagents under mild conditions led effectively to the formation of a C(aryl)-C(alkynyl) bond. An alternative mechanism has been proposed for the Castro-Stephens reaction.

Abstract:The construction of C-S bond is considered as an important protocol in organic transformations. An innovative strategy for CuI-catalyzed sulfenylation of 1-aryl-3-alkyl-1H-pyrazol-5(4H)-ones have been developed using elemental sulfur as the sulfur source. This procedure provides a useful and direct approach for the assembly of a wide range of structurally diverse 4-sulfenyl pyrazolones with moderate to excellent yields from simple and readily available starting materials. This method might be potentially applicable to large scale production, and it enriches current sulfenylation methods.
