Abstract:Fertilization is a multi-step process that culminates in the fusion of the sperm and egg membranes and formation of a zygote.A number of molecules with putative roles in sperm-oocyte fusion have been identified with genomic and proteomic techniques and their roles in the sperm-egg interaction have been studied.However,the mechanisms by which acrosome-reacted spermatozoa bind to receptor molecules on the oocyte plasma membrane and the subsequent fusion with the oolemma remain unknown.This article presented a detailed review of sperm-egg recognition and sperm-egg membrane interactions,which is of practical significance for deeper insights into the mechanisms of sperm-egg fusion.
