Translation Strategies for Subjective Modality in Literary Discourse

Abstract:This dissertation is intended to define the factors of subjective modality in literary discourse based on the framework of cognitive context in accordance with the principles of relevance and testability,and to discuss the characteristics of subjective modality in literary discourse,which include originality,connotation,flexibility and multi-cognitive agents of expressing subjective modality. The study argues that in literary translation the difficulties lie in the ways to cater to the correlation between the unique subjective emotion,attitudes,volition in expressing the original literary discourse and its aesthetic function. Some possible translation strategies are proposed accordingly,including equivalent corresponding transfer,implicit-explicit transfer,functional substitution and moderate alienation transfer.
