Abstract:The backward wave property of left-handed material is designed by CST soft.The simulated result shows that dielectric waveguide made of the Ω left-handed material has good backward wave property.The simulation result is consistence with the experiment result.

Abstract:The paper presents a single-sided double-S left-handed metamaterial structure in the X-band. The left-handed property of the new metamaterial has been verified by numerical simulation and experiment. Experimental results show the existence of the negative refraction within the same frequency band as indicated by the simulation. The proposed structure makes it easy to fabricate and feasible to make controllable metamaterial by incorporating itself with controllable elements.

Abstract:By using a phased electromagnetic dipole array to model a moving charged particle, we experimentally verified a reversed Cherenkov radiation in the left-handed media in the frequency range from 8.1 to 9.5 GHz. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of new types of particle detectors and radiation generators.

Abstract:In the present letter, a design for active left-handed material collaborated with microwave varactors is proposed and experimentally realized. Both the results of simulation and experiment verify the tunable left-handed properties of the structure in microwave band. A controllable beam steering is then observed experimentally by a prism fabricated by such metamaterial. The simplicity of the active design and its tunable negative refraction indices make it useful for various applications.

Abstract:An X-band microwave waveguide coupler partially filled with a left-handed material is realized and measured. The electromagnetic wave propagates in the primary branch of the coupler which is filled with the left-handed material and is backward edge coupled into the secondary waveguide, filled with a right-handed material. Near the interface between the left-handed and the right-handed materials, the Poynting vectors have opposite directions, which yields a backward coupling. Such coupler is designed, fabricated, and the backward coupling effect is indeed measured.

Abstract:An improved planar structure of left-handed (LH) metamaterial is presented, and then designed and analyzed in microwave regime. In the anticipated LH frequency regime, the LH property is validated from the phenomena of backward wave propagation and negative refraction. To characterize the electromagnetic property of the planar metamaterial, we introduce the wedge method by constructing a wedge-shaped bulk LH metamaterial by stacking the planar LH metamaterials. The effective refractive index estimated by the wedge method is in excellent agreement with that retrieved by the inversion method from the transmission and reflection spectra.

Abstract:Based on the basic principle that left-handed material can be a combination of periodically arranged split-ring resonators and thin metallic rods which having negative effective permeability and negative effective permittivity respectively, a new split-ring resonator with symmetric structure was proposed. Compared to the original characteristics, the new structure has two symmetric rings with more uniformly distributed current and better electromagnetic properties. A new left-handed metamaterial was then fabricated with such split-ring resonators array and thin metallic rods arrays, and a detailed description of the design and simulation procedure was given simultaneously. Simulation of the power transmission and the negative Snell refraction properties show that the metamaterial exhibits obvious left-handed behavior in a specific frequency range.

Abstract:In this paper, a kind of left-handed material (LHM) composed of a mushroom-like structure is described. The proposed mushroom-like structure unit not only has a seamless band combined with a right-handed and left-handed pass-band, which gives an ultra wide pass-band, but it also gives a balanced structure with a negative-zero-positive index of refraction. In this study, the CST Microwave Studio software is used to simulate the transmission and reflection parameters (S parameters) of this LHM, from which the effective permittivity epsilon and permeability mu are extracted to further prove the double negative property of the new LHM. The simulation results demonstrate the existence of the right-handed and left-handed pass-bands at different frequency ranges. It shows that the right-handed pass-band appears from 13 GHz to 15.5 GHz, and the left-handed pass-band is from 15.5 GHz to 17 GHz. Furthermore, the possibility of the left-handed pass-band is demonstrated by the simultaneous appearance of negative epsilon and negative mu. On the other hand, by conducting a scattering simulation on a prism-like periodic structure in the microwave band, the refractive angle is successfully observed which is contrary to that of the normal material, thereby the existence of the negative index of refraction is confirmed.

Abstract:Waveguides using a slab of left-handed metamaterial (LHM) adjacent to a slab of right-handed material (RHM) have shown backward coupling properties over the frequency range in the LHM passband where both permittivity and permeability are negative. In this letter the authors further show that when both slabs are LHMs with different passbands, the resultant backward coupling frequency band is a union of both passbands. The curious fact that the stop band of a metamaterial where permittivity is negative and permeability is positive can support propagating wave is shown theoretically. Backward couplers are demonstrated experimentally to have wideband and dual-band properties by judiciously choosing LHM-LHM and LHM-RHM slabs. This proposed method offers flexibility in producing wideband/multiband coupling and can be used to design and fabricate microwave devices.

Abstract:In this letter, a very simple metallic subwavelength cell is designed for constructing left-handed metamaterial. The conductive current mode inside the metallic resonator of this cell imitates one reported displacement current mode inside a dielectric subwavelength resonator. We show by simulation and experiments that an artificial metamaterial composed of cells with such kind of current mode can behave simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability. The metallic cell with double negative property obtained in this letter is suitable for the applications in the high frequency band, such as in millimeter or even terahertz bands.

Abstract:The left-handed materials composed of metal long-wire and short-wire pairs are designed and fabricated.By using simulation and parameter retrieval procedure,the effective electromagnetic parameters are obtained and left-handed regime is found.In the experiment,the transmission spectrums and the phase delay of the composite with different number of layers are measured;the results both confirm the left-handed property of the composite.Furthermore,the dispersion relations of the structures are analyzed to verify the left-handed property of the composite in another way.The results of all the four methods above agree with each other.

Abstract:In this paper,we propose a novel approach to realize left-handed metamaterials with pure dielectrics.Since conductive currents and displacement currents play the same roles in Maxwell’s Equations to the electric or magnetic polarization in the constitutive relations,we propose the construction of left-handed electromagnetic properties for BST ceramics using high dielectric resonators with a replacement of conductive current by displacement current.Computer simulation and experimental observation verify the validation of this theory.

Abstract:A new leaky wave antenna is presented in this paper, which is based on a stub-loaded rectangular waveguide partially filled with left-handed (LH) or right-handed (RH) dielectric slabs. The leakage properties of the new antenna are carefully examined by an approach of combining the multimode network theory with the mode-matching method. A systematic comparison is given for the leaky characteristics between the antenna filled with left hand material (LHM) and with right handed material (RHM). It has been found that the former is of larger leakage constant than that of the latter one. Extensive numerical results for the radiation characteristics of the antennas are given with physical explanations to establish useful guidelines for the antenna design.

Abstract:A controllable left-handed metamaterial based on a varactor-loaded S-shaped resonator structure is presented to realize an active radome. By controlling the phase properties of the radome, the antenna exhibits continuous scanning capability in a range of ±40°, which is confirmed by theoretical analysis.

Abstract:A novel composed right/left-handed (CRLH) rectangular waveguide (RWG) is presented. It is periodically loaded with open-ended corrugations, which allow energy radiating from them. Compared with previously referred left-handed (LH) waveguides, this proposed structure is more effective for leaky-wave antennas (LWAs) design. To determine the dispersion property, an equivalent circuit is given. Based on the CRLH RWG, a LWA is achieved and analyzed by full wave simulation, which supports the backward-to-forward beam scanning by frequency above 7.45 GHz. The obtained propagation and radiation results are in good agreement with theoretical suggestions. (c) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Based upon the bionics principle, we present the design of a metal-dielectric-metal sandwiched leaf-shaped metamaterial, and the numerical simulation and experiment have confirmed an obvious left-handed transmission peak by this structure. The retrieved effective permittivity, permeability, and refractive index are all negative around the frequency of the resonant peak, and the planar lens focusing experiment has further confirmed its left-handed features. The results in this paper can be used to explain the resonance mechanism of the left-handed metamaterials fabricated by means of the nano-self-assembly approach, and thus may greatly promote the development of optical metamaterials.

Abstract:We present in this paper a solid-state sample of microwave metamaterial produced by a standard hot-press technique for the manufacture of printed circuit boards. We performed three experiments to demonstrate that this sample is a left-handed material with negative refractive index. The three experiments are power transmission, prism refraction, and beam shifting. We used differently shaped samples for the experiments and observed clear left-handed behaviors in a 1-GHz-wide passband with an insertion loss of less than 0.5 dB per unit cell, which is no greater than the insertion loss of many microwave devices. The sample has very stable characteristics and all results are consistent with one another.

Abstract:The leakage characteristics of a new grating leaky wave antenna based on left-handed material are carefully analyzed using a method which combines the rigors mode matching procedure with multimode network method. The variations of the leakage constant with structure parameters are given in this paper, to show the special properties of this kind of antenna. The numerical results indicated that the new leaky wave antenna is of much larger leakage constant than that for the conventional one. The reason for this phenomenon is discussed

Abstract:Left-handed metamaterials always gain the electromagnetic properties from the structure rather than inherit them directly from the materials they are composed of. In this article, a metamaterial was made using split-ring resonators and slabs of ferroelectric materials, where negative permittivity was realized by intrinsic properties of ferroelectric materials. Using a waveguide-based retrieval method, the permittivity and permeability of the metamaterials were experimentally retrieved, showing successfully the left-handed behaviors of the metamaterial over certain frequency band.

Abstract:Through connecting magnetic resonators and coplanar short metallic wires together, a two dimensional left-handed metamaterial based on single sided metallic structure was proposed. Theoretical analysis and simulated results indicated that this construction exhibited negative effective permittivity and permeability simultaneously in a certain frequency range. Its relative negative refraction pass-band reached 36%. Meanwhile, this construction guaranteed relatively stable tolerance of errors. The resonant frequency and the width of the pass band are insensitive to the change in the width of the short metallic wires, which facilitates its fabrication and is of meaning for designing left-handed metamaterial in infrared or terahertz range.

Abstract:A planar left-handed metamaterial(LHM) composed of electric resonator pairs is presented in this paper. Theoretical analysis, an equivalent circuit model and simulated results of a wedge sample show that this material exhibits a negative refraction pass-band around 9.6GHz under normal-incidence and is insensitive to a change in incidence angle. Furthermore, as the angle between the arm of the electric resonators and the strip connecting the arms increases, the frequency range of the pass-band shifts downwards. Consequently, this LHM guarantees a relatively stable torlerence of errors when it is practically fabricated. Moreover, it is a candidate for designing multi-band LHM through combining the resonator pairs with different angles.
