Abstract:Oil monitoring constitutes an important and essential component of condition monitoring technologies and has distinguished advantages in revealing wear, lubrication and friction conditions of tribo-pairs. Newly developed on-line/in-line oil monitoring technologies extend the merits into real-time applications and demonstrate significant benefits in maintenance and management of equipment. This paper comprehensively reviews the progress of on-line/in-line oil monitoring techniques including sensor technologies, their scopes and industrial applications. Based on the existing developments and applications of the sensors for oil quality and wear debris measurements, the trends for future sensor developments are discussed with focuses on accurate, integrated and intelligent features along with exploring a fundamental issue, that is, acquiring the knowledge on degradation mechanisms which has not received sufficient attention until now. Current status of applications of on-line oil monitoring is also reviewed. Although limited reports have been found on this topic, increasing awareness and encouraging progress in on-line monitoring techniques are recognized in applications such as aircraft, shipping, railway, mining, etc. Key fundamental issues for further extending the on-line oil monitoring techniques in industries are proposed and they include long-term reliability of sensors in harsh conditions, and agreement with fault or maintenance determination.

Abstract:This article is an overview of new trends in oil condition monitoring and the impact of Industry 4.0 on the monitoring of lubricants in real time. New solutions are being introduced into this industry with new advantages in the development of artificial intelligence, as well as machine learning and sensor technologies that are applicable for data-based services. This is called predictive maintenance, which changes the traditional routine maintenance and provides a deep understanding of the operation of equipment. Constant monitoring of the condition of lubricants during operation is necessary to maintain the quality of the equipment in real time since non-operational monitoring can reduce operating costs by eliminating equipment downtime during daily diagnostics. Abstract:Water quality is one of the most critical indicators of environmental pollution and it affects all of us. Water contamination can be accidental or intentional and the consequences are drastic unless the appropriate measures are adopted on the spot. This review provides a critical assessment of the applicability of various technologies for real-time water quality monitoring, focusing on those that have been reportedly tested in real-life scenarios. Specifically, the performance of sensors based on molecularly imprinted polymers is evaluated in detail, also giving insights into their principle of operation, stability in real on-site applications and mass production options. Such characteristics as sensing range and limit of detection are given for the most promising systems, that were verified outside of laboratory conditions. Then, novel trends of using microwave spectroscopy and chemical materials integration for achieving a higher sensitivity to and selectivity of pollutants in water are described.

Abstract:Potential faults can be timely detected through online monitoring to the dissolved gases in the transformer oil so as to improve the safety of the electric power system. Firstly, the online monitoring technology of dissolved gases in the transformer oil is discussed in detail. Then, a low cost monitoring method to the characteristics gas dissolved in the transformer oil by using the semiconductor sensor array is put forward in this paper. In order to solve the cross sensitivity problem of a single gas sensor to the gaseous mixture, a signal-purifying method of gas sensor array based on neural network is introduced and used to settle the cross sensitivity problems among the characteristic gases when different sensors are used to monitor the gases concentration in the system. On this basis, a wireless monitoring system to the dissolved gases in the transformer oil is developed. The development system can realize to on-tine monitor the characteristic gases dissolved in the transformer oil such as hydrogen, methane, ethane, ethene, acetylene, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. And, the transformer condition information can also be transmitted in a wireless, long-distance, rapid and low-cost way for the system.

Abstract:The oil and gas industry continues to face challenges. We have witnessed volatility in commodity prices (oil supply outstripping demand, leading to overall market slowdown), the COVID-19 pandemic affecting production and supply chains around the world, labor shortages, facilities-security issues, and the need to prepare for the energy transition, just to name a few. Operators, now more than ever, need to make the most of their assets, not only maintaining production but also understanding what is happening around the clock to be able to prevent potential threats or situations that may escalate and affect operations. New sensors and innovative uses of existing technology are allowing access to a variety of data that can be incorporated into integrated work flows and modeling tools for better understanding of the production system. There are initial signs of operations moving toward the use of real-time models supporting decision making, enabling fast response to external changes, and improved forecasting, resulting in overall improved asset performance. New technology and innovation in production monitoring is focusing more and more on data integration and the use of integrated work flows. Significant attention is being paid to leveraging digital technology (e.g., remote operations, advanced data analysis tools) and improving the accuracy of measured data for better surveillance planning aiming at efficiency gains. Some examples of advances in the past year include the following: - Successful integration of data from permanent reservoir monitoring systems into reservoir models, allowing a better understanding of reservoir changes in waterflooding applications, showing the value of 4D data - Demonstration of the value of using fiber optics (e.g., for distributed acoustic and distributed temperature sensing) for a variety of use cases including well-flow profiling, calibration of fracture propagation models, and understanding well interference - New sensors to monitor pressure and temperature beyond well-integrity barriers in zones with reduced clearance, just ready for field testing - Use of traditional acquired data (e.g., pressure) to infer inter- and intrazone well interference, affordable integration of tracers with sleeve technology for completion and reservoir diagnostic in horizontal wells - Digital methods such as machine learning and artificial intelligence for data interpretation and forecasting and even to serve as surrogate measurements to provide multiphase flow data (i.e., virtual flowmeters). Abstract:Petroleum is still an important source of energy and chemical raw materials in today's industrial society. Oil, water and sludge are included in the process of crude oil exploitation, and the dynamic monitoring of the interface between oil and water and oil and gas provides the basis for oil-water separation and production. In this paper, several common multi-interface detection methods for crude oil are introduced, and their advantages are analyzed and summarized. Aiming at the analysis of capacitive detection method, this paper introduces the structure and detection principle of several main capacitive sensors, and analyzes their advantages and development trend.

Abstract:Lubricating oil as the blood of machine carries profound information of the life-span performances. Naturally, oil degrades with serving time and cause severe wear. Therefore, it is very important to detect the age of lubricating oil, which can reveal lubrication conditions and wear conditions as well. To characterize oil performances quantitatively, the physical and chemical properties are monitored with an on-line oil property sensor focusing on viscosity and permittivity. Moreover, an online wear debris sensor is adopted to detect the wear along with oil deterioration. With these on-line sensors, an aging process of oil and the consequence of wear can be informatively understood. Experimentally, an oil aging test is carried out in a four-ball test rig with on-line sensors of oil properties and wear particles. Results show that the aging process of lubricating oil, which is comprehensive and uninvestigated, can be monitored with online sensors, and the accuracy for the detection is verified with off-line analysis.

Abstract:Oil debris monitoring has played an irreplaceable role in ascertaining the health condition of rotating machinery (e.g. engine, gearbox). Although many sensing methods for detecting wear-generated particles of rotating elements have been presented, a comprehensive review paper on these technologies is still missing. To this end, this paper provides a detailed survey of the advances in oil debris monitoring for the online health monitoring of rotating machinery. According to the detection mechanism, these sensing technologies are classified under varying categories (magnetic: magnetic chip detectors and inductive sensors, electrical: resistive-capacitive sensors and electrostatic sensors, optical: photoelectric sensors and imaging sensors, acoustic). The systematic analysis and commentary on each sensing method are conducted, and real applications also be reviewed. These sensing technologies are not confined to research-related activities, of which some have already been patented and commercialized. Finally, future works are presented to meet the challenges faced by online monitoring of rotating machinery.

Abstract:An intelligent monitoring lubricant is essential for the development of smart machines because unexpected and fatal failures of critical dynamic components in the machines happen every day, threatening the life and health of humans. Inspired by the triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) work on water, we present a feasible way to prepare a self-powered triboelectric sensor for real-time monitoring of lubricating oils via the contact electrification process of oil–solid contact (O–S TENG). Typical intruding contaminants in pure base oils can be successfully monitored. The O–S TENG has very good sensitivity, which even can respectively detect at least 1 mg mL–1 debris and 0.01 wt % water contaminants. Furthermore, the real-time monitoring of formulated engine lubricating oil in a real engine oil tank is achieved. Our results show that electron transfer is possible from an oil to solid surface during contact electrification. The electrical output characteristic depends on the screen effect from such as wear debris, deposited carbons, and age-induced organic molecules in oils. Previous work only qualitatively identified that the output ability of liquid can be improved by leaving less liquid adsorbed on the TENG surface, but the adsorption mass and adsorption speed of liquid and its consequences for the output performance were not studied. We quantitatively study the internal relationship between output ability and adsorbing behavior of lubricating oils by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) for liquid–solid contact interfaces. This study provides a real-time, online, self-powered strategy for intelligent diagnosis of lubricating oils.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Maintaining engine oil quality is critical for industrial machinery and transformers to ensure efficient operation and reduce the risk of failure. This paper presents a novel application of an X-band microwave sensor, using a third-order electroformed iris waveguide filter, for real-time, non-invasive engine oil quality monitoring. By detecting shifts in the dielectric properties of engine oil, the sensor accurately tracks oil degradation as it ages. Unlike traditional methods that require oil extraction and laboratory analysis, this sensor enables continuous, in-situ monitoring, providing immediate feedback without disrupting system operations. Any change in oil quality causes a frequency shift, as variations in its dielectric properties affect the waveguide's resonance. This shift can be measured in real time, enabling accurate monitoring of oil degradation. Additional measurements were conducted using the coaxial probe technique to analyze the changes in the oil's electrical behavior during various heating periods. Experimental results demonstrate the sensor's sensitivity, with measurable frequency shifts of up to 10 MHz observed in the most aged oil samples. These shifts clearly correlate with the oil's aging process, confirming the sensor's potential for practical use in predictive maintenance. This system, utilizing an electroformed waveguide, offers a cost-effective and efficient solution for enhancing machinery longevity and optimizing maintenance schedules in industrial applications.

Abstract:Oil production testing is a critical tool to understand reservoir properties and well producibility. The development of oil production testing technology in China has mainly gone through three phases: conventional oil production testing phase, oil production testing phase, and integrated oil production testing phase. Currently, domestic and overseas oilfields are still adopting the traditional oil production testing method, which contains plenty of repetitive processes that cost longer operating time, higher operating cost, formation damage caused by excessive high-density fluid, and many other shortcomings. Also, the difficulties of oil production testing in the deep and ultra-deep well under HPHT conditions are significant. Analyzing the development trend of oil production testing, there are two main topics identified: oil production testing for separated layer via one trip string and Pad-free oil production testing method. The oil production testing for separated layer via one trip string was developed for testing formations where lamination and thin layers are presented and causing interference among the testing layers. The Pad-free oil production testing methodology was developed for testing wells that fail to obtain reservoir fluid properties due to the formation damage caused by a high fluid density pad. This paper is aiming to summarize and analyze the most advanced oil production testing technology worldwide and innovations had been made to the oil production testing field, hopefully inspired researchers to develop possible future uses and further improvements in efficiency. Facing the challenges of low gas prices, only continuous innovation in technology and the upgradation of tools and equipment can achieve the goal of improving quality and increasing efficiency.

Abstract:Molecular water in lubricants causes unavoidable damage in mechanical tribo-systems. To illustrate the characteristics of water in oil, three typical hybrid states, including dissolved, free, and emulsified states, were discussed focusing on the physical structures, hazards, and electric properties. Aiming at the on-line monitoring of molecular water in engine oil, a conductivity-based sensor was proposed. Two enamel wires, with partial naked surfaces, were winded around an insulated pole in parallel to serve as a probe. A higher cell constant was obtained with a high sensitivity. A multi-channel sensor with four probes was designed for on-line monitoring. The performance of the sensor was examined experimentally. As main result, the sensor has explicit effects on detecting free and emulsified water. The sensor also has a good linearity and repeatability when water content increasing from 0% to 3%, and has a high reliability under the disturbances of air and metal debris.

Abstract:A novel infrared oil content analyzer based on series of newly-developed techniques, such as fixed grating, array detectors, auto-sampling system and so on, was presented. The analyzer has high precision, accuracy and speed, and the auto-sampling makes it possible to avoid the toxic extraction reagent. Furthermore, the analyzer was intellectualized, and the interface of the analyzer's software is friendly to analyst.

Abstract:Lubricant failure or irrational lubrication is the root cause of industrial equipment failure. By monitoring the distribution of the suspended particles in lubricants, it is possible to discover hidden lubrication problems. After taking the lubricating oil samples of industrial equipment, the oil monitoring technology is used to analyze the particle size distribution and the type and content of the abrasive particles by electrical, magnetic, and optical monitoring techniques. It is necessary to separate the suspended particles in oils with impurities by some method to eliminate potential safety hazards and ensure the reuse efficiency of the lubricant. In this paper, the principles, advantages, and disadvantages of several important oil monitoring methods are described, and new developments in various methods are analyzed. Several typical methods for separation of the suspended particles in purified oils were introduced. The advantages and disadvantages of each process were summarized. The development direction of lubricant monitoring technology was pointed out, and guidance was provided for the separation and online monitoring of the suspended particles in lubricants. Finally, compared with similar review papers, this paper specifically figured out that ultrasonic separation method has the advantages of real time, high efficiency, and no pollution and has important application value for micron-scale particle separation of large precision machines.

Abstract:Since inline monitoring method has the advantages of no sampling, being real-time, no human intervention, and low error, this paper innovatively proposes to study the inline monitoring of wear particles in an oil pipeline, from the perspective of the different motion characteristics of the particles. In this paper, an inline optical sensor was designed and developed by studying the velocity characteristics of different particles through theoretical calculations, numerical simulations, and experimental analysis. First, an equation for particle motion was statistically established, based on the forces acting on wear particles in an oil-filled vertical tube. Then a finite element model of particle motion in a full-flow oil pipeline was created, to simulate particle motion with various diameters, densities, locations, and shapes. Finally, the results of the theoretical study were effectively applied to design an inline optical monitoring sensor, and the experimental validation results demonstrated that the inline sensor has excellent suitability for monitoring wear particles. This study has significance for the safe operation of large rotating machinery.

Abstract:A high-precision wear particle monitoring instrument based on numerical simulation, machine vision, multitarget tracking algorithm, and microfluidic technology is designed and developed in this article. The instrument not only performs the traditional particle number and size detection but also proposes a particle density detection model based on motion velocity. First, an online visual microfluidic chip for oil particle motion was specially designed. Then, a mathematical model relationship between particle velocity and particle diameter, particle density, oil viscosity, and oil density was established by force analysis and solving the equation, which was used to explain the working principle of the instrument. Meanwhile, a multitarget tracking algorithm incorporating the characteristics of wear particles based on YOLOv5-Deepsort was custom-developed to detect the number, size, and motion characteristics of particles under the optical field of view of the image sensor. Second, the oil flow field distribution and the four factors affecting the particle motion characteristics in the self-developed chamber, particle size, particle material, particle radial position, and oil velocity, were analyzed by using the finite-element analysis in COMSOL. Finally, pin-on-disk wear experimental validation results demonstrated this approach has excellent suitability to monitor the number, size, and density of wear particles with diameters above and densities above 2000 kg/ simultaneously. This portable oil particle monitoring instrument provides technical support for condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, and intelligent maintenance of rotating mechanical equipment.
