Abstract:In traditional Chinese medicine, the observation of tongue is regarded important. Especially tongue coating reflects the nature and location of the pathogenic factors as well as the condition of stomach. The conventional way to examine the tongue for diagnose is to look at the tongue directly by the doctor. But it lacks a unique standard and a shareable recording. In recent years, digital camera has become powerful to obtain images. But the original pictures are difficult to compare and analysis. As a result, the extraction of tongue coating from digital photos is essential to an automatic tongue diagnostic system. Most segmentation method can't be effective to extract tongue image, especially tongue coatings, from the original photograph. In this work, we propose a novel tongue coating segmentation method in multi-spaces. It can extract both thin coatings and thick coatings of different colors. The method is based on Otsu model, which is applied to the image after a pre-processing. This model is used on RGB space when extracting thin coating, while for thick coating it is used on HSV space. To validate the segmentation method, several hundreds of tongue images were collected and processed with it. According to the judgments by clinical experts, more than ninety percents of the results were well extracted. The method may provide a useful tool for setting up an automatic analysis system for tongue diagnose and establishing a database for the information of the patients.
