Abstract:Elucidating plant nitrogen nutrient status is of important to prove up grain protein formation mechanism and regulate grain quality in wheat.Field experiment was conducted using two wheat(Triticum aestivum L.)cultivars differing in protein content,Yumai 34 and Ningmai 9,to investigate the vertical distribution characteristics of canopy nitrogen content affected by different nitrogen application and its relationship with grain protein content.Four nitrogen ratios of basal to topdressing were designed as 1∶9,3∶7,5∶5 and 7∶3 based on nitrogen rate of 225 kg·ha with no nitrogen as control. The results showed that canopy nitrogen decreased with canopy layer lowering, but nitrogen fertilization increased canopy nitrogen content than N0.Nitrogen application methods had different effects on vertical gradients of plant nitrogen for two wheat cultivars.Higher dressing nitrogen ratio increased nitrogen vertical gradients in middle and upper leaf layers and reduced those in lower leaf layer and sheath layers for Ningmai 9.However,for Yumai 34,higher dressing nitrogen ratio increased nitrogen vertical gradients among whole canopy.Correlation analysis indicated that higher nitrogen vertical gradients in lower layer at anthesis and lower layer leaf and middle and lower layer sheath at filling stage had advantages on grain protein accumulation of Ningmai 9.But higher vertical gradients of nitrogen in middle and lower layer at anthesis and every layer at filling stage had advantages on improving protein content. The results indicate that the ratios of basal to topdressing of 7∶3 and 3∶7 are suitable for Ninmai 9 and Yumai 34,respectively,to regulate canopy nitrogen vertical distribution and optimize formation of grain protein.
